Higgs boson decays to four fermions through an abelian hidden sector

We consider a generic abelian hidden sector that couples to the Standard Model only through gauge-invariant renormalizable operators. This allows the exotic Higgs boson to mix with the Standard Model Higgs boson, and the exotic abelian gauge boson to mix with the Standard Model hypercharge gauge boson. One immediate consequence of spontaneous breaking of the hidden sector gauge group is the possible decay of the lightest Higgs boson into four fermions through intermediate exotic gauge bosons. We study the implications of this decay for Higgs boson phenomenology at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Our emphasis is on the four lepton final state.

LHC Signals for Warped Electroweak Neutral Gauge Bosons

We study signals at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations of the electroweak gauge bosons in the framework with the Standard Model (SM) gauge and fermion fields propagating in a warped extra dimension. Such a framework addresses both the Planck-weak and flavor hierarchy problems of the SM. Unlike the often studied Z' cases, in this framework, there are three neutral gauge bosons due to the underlying SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1)_X gauge group in the bulk. Furthermore, couplings of these KK states to light quarks and leptons are suppressed, whereas those to top and bottom quarks are enhanced compared to the SM gauge couplings. Therefore, the production of light quark and lepton states is suppressed relative to other beyond the SM constructions, and the fermionic decays of these states are dominated by the top and bottom quarks, which are, though, overwhelmed by KK gluons dominantly decaying into them. However, as we emphasize in this paper, decays of these states to longitudinal W, Z and Higgs are also enhanced similarly to the case of top and bottom quarks. We show that the W, Z and Higgs final states can give significant sensitivity at the LHC to 2 (3) TeV KK scale with an integrated luminosity of 100 invfb (1 invab). Since current theoretical framework(s) favor KK masses greater than about 3 TeV, luminosity upgrade of LHC is likely to be crucial in observing these states.

Stop Decay into Right-handed Sneutrino LSP at Hadron Colliders

Right-handed neutrinos offer us the possibility of accommodating neutrino masses. In a supersymmetric model, this implies the existence of right-handed sneutrinos. Right-handed sneutrinos are expected to be as light as other supersymmetric particles if the neutrinos are Dirac fermions, or if the lepton-number breaking scale is at (or below) the supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking scale, assumed to be around the electroweak scale. Depending on the mechanism of SUSY breaking, the lightest right-handed sneutrino may be the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). We consider the unique hadron collider signatures of a weak scale right-handed sneutrino LSP, assuming R-parity conservation. For concreteness, we concentrate on stop pair-production and decay at the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider, and briefly comment on the production and decay of other supersymmetric particles.

Right-handed Sneutrinos as Nonthermal Dark Matter

When the minimal supersymmetric standard model is augmented by three right-handed neutrino superfields, one generically predicts that the neutrinos acquire Majorana masses. We postulate that all supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking masses as well as the Majorana masses of the right-handed neutrinos are around the electroweak scale and, motivated by the smallness of neutrino masses, assume that the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) is an almost-pure right-handed sneutrino. We discuss the conditions under which this LSP is a successful dark matter candidate. In general, such an LSP has to be nonthermal in order not to overclose the universe, and we find the conditions under which this is indeed the case by comparing the Hubble expansion rate with the rates of the relevant thermalizing processes, including self-annihilation and co-annihilation with other SUSY and standard model particles.

Low-Energy Neutrino Majorana Phases and Charged-Lepton Electric Dipole Moments

If the neutrinos are Majorana fermions, there are at least three new, potentially observable CP-odd phases that parameterize CP-invariance violating phenomena. We currently have no information regarding any of them and know that two out of the three, the so-called Majorana phases, are very hard to access experimentally. Here, we discuss the effect of Majorana phases on charged-lepton electric dipole moments (EDM), and explicitly show that neutrino Majorana phases induce EDMs even in the absence of other sources of CP-invariance violation. We also argue that while the Majorana neutrino contribution to EDMs is tiny, there is one generic ultraviolet completion to the standard model plus massive Majorana neutrinos -- the standard model plus a triplet Higgs boson -- that leads to significantly enhanced contributions which are still proportional to the low-energy neutrino Majorana phases. If this particular scenario is realized in nature, it seems possible, at least in principle, to measure the Majorana phases by precisely measuring charged-lepton EDMs.

B-meson signatures of a Supersymmetric U(2) flavor model

We discuss B-meson signatures of a Supersymmetric U(2) flavor model, with relatively light (electroweak scale masses) third generation right-handed scalars. We impose current B and K meson experimental constraints on such a theory, and obtain expectations for B->X_s gamma, B->X_s glue, B->X_s l+ l-, B->phi K_s, B_s-B_sbar mixing, and the dilepton asymmetry in B_s. We show that such a theory is compatible with all current data, and furthermore, could reconcile the apparent deviations from Standard Model predictions that have been found in some experiments.

Collider Signature of Bulk Neutrinos in Large Extra Dimensions

We consider the collider signature of right-handed neutrinos propagating in $δ$ (large) extra dimensions, and interacting with Standard Model fields only through a Yukawa coupling to the left-handed neutrino and the Higgs boson. These theories are attractive as they can explain the smallness of the neutrino mass, as has already been shown. We show that if $δ$ is bigger than two, it can result in an enhancement in the production rate of the Higgs boson, decaying either invisibly or to a $b$ anti-$b$ quark pair, associated with an isolated high $p_T$ charged lepton and missing transverse energy at future hadron colliders, such as the LHC. The enhancement is due to the large number of Kaluza-Klein neutrinos produced in the final state. The observation of the signal event would provide an opportunity to distinguish between the normal and inverted neutrino mass hierarchies, and to determine the absolute scale of neutrino masses by measuring the asymmetry of the observed event numbers in the electron and muon channels.

Effects of Fermion Localization in Higgsless Theories and Electroweak Constraints

Extra-dimensional Higgsless models with electroweak symmetry breaking through boundary conditions generically have difficulties with electroweak precision constraints, when the fermions are localized to the ``branes'' in the fifth dimension. In this paper we show that these constraints can be relaxed by allowing the light fermions to have a finite extent into the bulk of the fifth dimension. The $T$ and $U$ electroweak parameters can be naturally suppressed by a custodial symmetry, while the $S$ parameter can be made to vanish through a cancellation, if the leakage into the bulk of the light gauge fields and the light left-handed fermion fields are of the same size. This cancellation is possible while allowing realistic values for the first two generations of fermion masses, although special treatment is probably required for the top quark. We present this idea here in the context of a specific continuum theory-space model; however, it can be applied to any five-dimensional Higgsless model, either with a flat or a warped background.

Higgsless Electroweak Symmetry Breaking from Theory Space

We investigate unitarity of $W^+W^-$ scattering in the context of theory space models of the form $U(1)\times {[SU(2)]}^N\times SU(2)_{N+1}$, which are broken down to $U(1)_{EM}$ by non-linear $Σ$ fields, without the presence of a physical Higgs Boson. By allowing the couplings of the U(1) and the final $SU(2)_{N+1}$ to vary, we can fit the $W$ and $Z$ masses, and we find that the coefficient of the term in the amplitude that grows as $E^2/m_W^2$ at high energies is suppressed by a factor of $(N+1)^{-2}$. In the $N+1\to\infty$ limit the model becomes a 5-dimensional SU(2) gauge theory defined on an interval, where boundary terms at the two ends of the interval break the SU(2) down to $U(1)_{EM}$. These boundary terms also modify the Kaluza-Klein (KK) mass spectrum, so that the lightest KK states can be identified as the $W$ and $Z$ bosons. The $T$ parameter, which measures custodial symmetry breaking, is naturally small in these models. Depending on how matter fields are included, the strongest experimental constraints come from precision electroweak limits on the $S$ parameter.

Constraints on Large Extra Dimensions with Bulk Neutrinos

We consider right-handed neutrinos propagating in $δ$ (large) extra dimensions, whose only coupling to Standard Model fields is the Yukawa coupling to the left-handed neutrino and the Higgs boson. These theories are attractive as they can explain the smallness of the neutrino mass, as has already been shown. We show that if $δ$ is bigger than two, there are strong constraints on the radius of the extra dimensions, resulting from the experimental limit on the probability of an active state to mix into the large number of sterile Kaluza-Klein states of the bulk neutrino. We also calculate the bounds on the radius resulting from requiring that perturbative unitarity be valid in the theory, in an imagined Higgs-Higgs scattering channel.

B-physics Signature of a Supersymmetric U(2) Flavor Model

We discuss the B-physics signature of a supersymmetric U(2) flavor model in which the third generation scalars are relatively light (electroweak scale masses). We impose current experimental constraints on such a framework and obtain expectations for various B-physics processes. Here we present CP violation in (b->s gamma) and (b->phi K), and, Bs-Bsbar mixing. We show that if realized in nature, such a framework can be discovered in current and upcoming experiments.

Proton Decay due to bulk SU(5) gauge bosons in the Randall-Sundrum Scenario

We calculate the proton decay rate due to five dimensional SU(5) gauge bosons in the Randall-Sundrum scenario with two branes (Planck brane and TeV brane). We consider matter in the usual 10 and \bar 5 SU(5) representations localized on a brane, and consider the case when SU(5) is broken by a Higgs mechanism on the matter brane. We calculate the proton decay rate mediated by X bosons, due to terms in the Lagrangian with X and its derivative along the extra dimension. We confirm that the experimental limit on the proton decay rate allows SU(5) matter to be on the Planck brane, but excludes it from being on the TeV brane in this scenario.

Extra dimensions vs. supersymmetric interpretation of missing energy events at a linear collider

The photon plus missing energy signature is a primary handle on two important classes of theories. Theories with large extra dimensions predict the production of photons in association with Kaluza-Klein excitations of the graviton. In supersymmetric theories with superlight gravitinos, photons can be produced in association with gravitino pairs. The signatures for these two theories are compared, and it is found that they can be distinguished by studying the photon energy distributions and scaling of the cross section with center-of-mass energy. Both these methods fail, however, if there are six extra dimensions. In that case, additional phenomena predicted by the theories would be required to narrow down the underlying causes of the photon plus missing energy signal. We also study the ability of these measurements to determine the number of extra dimensions.

Superlight gravitinos in electron-photon collisions

Motivated by recent studies of supersymmetry in higher-dimensional spaces, we discuss the experimental signatures of a superlight gravitino, mass < 0.001 eV. We concentrate on the process (e- gamma -> selectronR gravitino) as a probe of supersymmetry, where a single heavy superpartner and a superlight gravitino are produced. The fact that there is only one heavy superpartner in the final state in this process would require a lower center-of-mass energy for on-shell production compared to conventional pair production. For instance, for a 500 GeV machine, we find that a positive signal will be found if the supersymmetry breaking scale is less than about 2 TeV. If no positive signal is found, this process puts a bound on the supersymmetry breaking scale.
