The Euler Number of Bloch States Manifold and the Quantum Phases in Gapped Fermionic Systems

We propose a topological Euler number to characterize nontrivial topological phases of gapped fermionic systems, which originates from the Gauss-Bonnet theorem on the Riemannian structure of Bloch states established by the real part of the quantum geometric tensor in momentum space. Meanwhile, the imaginary part of the geometric tensor corresponds to the Berry curvature which leads to the Chern number characterization. We discuss the topological numbers induced by the geometric tensor analytically in a general two-band model. As an example, we show that the zero-temperature phase diagram of a transverse field XY spin chain can be distinguished by the Euler characteristic number of the Bloch states manifold in a (1+1)-dimensional Bloch momentum space.

Topological Mott insulators of ultracold atomic mixtures induced by interactions in one-dimensional optical superlattices

We present exactly solvable examples that topological Mott insulators can emerge from topologically trivial states due to strong interactions between atoms for atomic mixtures trapped in one-dimensional optical superlattice systems. The topological Mott insulating state is characterized by nonzero Chern number and appears in the strongly interacting limit as long as the total band filling factor is an integer, which is not sensitive to the filling of each component. The topological nature of the Mott phase can be revealed by observing the density profile of the trapped system. Our results can be also generalized to the multi-component atomic systems.

Fractional topological states of dipolar fermions in one-dimensional optical superlattices

We study the properties of dipolar fermions trapped in one-dimensional bichromatic optical lattices and show the existence of fractional topological states in the presence of strong dipole-dipole interactions. We find some interesting connections between fractional topological states in one-dimensional superlattices and the fractional quantum Hall states: (i) the one-dimensional fractional topological states for systems at filling factor ν=1/p have p-fold degeneracy, (ii) the quasihole excitations fulfill the same counting rule as that of fractional quantum Hall states, and (iii) the total Chern number of p-fold degenerate states is a nonzero integer. The existence of crystalline order in our system is also consistent with the thin-torus limit of the fractional quantum Hall state on a torus. The possible experimental realization in cold atomic systems offers a new platform for the study of fractional topological phases in one-dimensional superlattice systems.

Topological superconductor to Anderson localization transition in one-dimensional incommensurate lattices

We study the competition of disorder and superconductivity for a one-dimensional p-wave superconductor in incommensurate potentials. With the increase in the strength of the incommensurate potential, the system undergoes a transition from a topological superconducting phase to a topologically trivial localized phase. The phase boundary is determined both numerically and analytically from various aspects and the topological superconducting phase is characterized by the presence of Majorana edge fermions in the system with open boundary conditions. We also calculate the topological $Z_2$ invariant of the bulk system and find it can be used to distinguish the different topological phases even for a disordered system.

Topologically protected mid-gap states induced by impurity in one-dimensional superlattices

Based on the discovery of the nontrivial topology of one-dimensional superlattices, we show that midgap states will emerge in such systems induced by a single on-site impurity. Besides the trivial bound state located at the impurity site, these midgap states are localized at the adjacent sides of the impurity, carrying the information of the topology and behaving like the effect of the open boundary conditions in the limit of a large attractive or repulsive impurity potential. Using this feature, the impurity can be used to detect the topology of the superlattice system and to realize the adiabatic pumping between the opposite sides of the impurity in cold-atom experiments or in photonic crystals.

Mapping trapped atomic gas with spin-orbit coupling to quantum Rabi-like model

We construct a connection of the ultracold atomic system in a harmonic trap with Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling to the quantum Rabi-like model. By mapping the trapped atomic system to a Rabi-like model, we can get the exact solution of the Rabi-like model following the methods to solve the quantum Rabi model. The existence of such a mapping implies that we can study the basic model in quantum optics by using trapped atomic gases with spin-orbit coupling.

Wigner crystal versus Fermionization for one-dimensional Hubbard models with and without long-range interactions

The ground state properties of Hubbard model with or without long-range interactions in the regime with strongly repulsive on-site interaction are investigated by means of the exact diagonalization method. We show that the appearance of $N$-crests in the density profile of a trapped N-fermion system is a natural result of "fermionization" between antiparallel-spin fermions in the strongly repulsive limit and can not be taken as the only signature of Wigner crystal phase, as the static structure factor does not show any signature of crystallization. On the contrary, both the density distribution and static structure factor of Hubbard model with strong long-range interactions display clear signature of Wigner crystal. Our results indicate the important role of long-range interaction in the formation of Wigner crystal.

Majorana fermions in density modulated p-wave superconducting wires

We study the p-wave superconducting wire with a periodically modulated chemical potential and show that the Majorana edge states are robust against the periodic modulation. We find that the critical amplitude of modulated potential, at which the Majorana edge fermions and topological phase disappear, strongly depends on the phase shifts. For some specific values of the phase shift, the critical amplitude tends to infinity. The existence of Majorana edge fermions in the open chain can be characterized by a topological $Z_2$ invariant of the bulk system, which can be applied to determine the phase boundary between the topologically trivial and nontrivial superconducting phases. We also demonstrate the existence of the zero-energy peak in the spectral function of the topological superconducting phase, which is only sensitive to the open boundary condition but robust against the disorder.

Fermi super-Tonks-Girardeau state for attractive Fermi gases in an optical lattice

We demonstrate that a kind of highly excited state of strongly attractive Hubbard model, named of Fermi super-Tonks-Girardeau state, can be realized in the spin-1/2 Fermi optical lattice system by a sudden switch of interaction from the strongly repulsive regime to the strongly attractive regime. In contrast to the ground state of the attractive Hubbard model, such a state is the lowest scattering state with no pairing between attractive fermions. With the aid of Bethe-ansatz method, we calculate energies of both the Fermi Tonks-Girardeau gas and the Fermi super-Tonks-Girardeau state of spin-1/2 ultracold fermions and show that both energies approach to the same limit as the strength of the interaction goes to infinity. By exactly solving the quench dynamics of the Hubbard model, we demonstrate that the Fermi super-Tonks-Girardeau state can be transferred from the initial repulsive ground state very efficiently. This allows the experimental study of properties of Fermi super-Tonks-Girardeau gas in optical lattices.

Geometric phase and quantum phase transition in an inhomogeneous periodic XY spin-1/2 model

The notion of geometric phase has been recently introduced to analyze the quantum phase transitions of many-body systems from the geometrical perspective. In this work, we study the geometric phase of the ground state for an inhomogeneous period-two anisotropic XY model in a transverse field. This model encompasses a group of familiar spin models as its special cases and shows a richer critical behavior. The exact solution is obtained by mapping on a fermionic system through the Jordan-Wigner transformation and constructing the relevant canonical transformation to realize the diagonalization of the Hamiltonian coupled in the $k$-space. The results show that there may exist more than one quantum phase transition point at some parameter regions and these transition points correspond to the divergence or extremum properties of the Berry curvature.

Dynamical properties of hard-core anyons in one-dimensional optical lattices

We investigate the dynamical properties of anyons confined in one-dimensional optical lattice combined with a weak harmonic trap using the exact numerical method based on a generalized Jordan-Wigner transformation. The density profiles, momentum distribution, occupation distribution and occupations of the lowest natural orbital are obtained for different statistical parameters. The density profiles of anyons display the same behaviors irrespective of statistical parameter in the full evolving period. While the behaviors dependent on statistical property are shown in the momentum distributions and occupations of natural orbitals.

Edge states and topological phases in one-dimensional optical superlattices

We show that one-dimensional quasi-periodic optical lattice systems can exhibit edge states and topological phases which are generally believed to appear in two-dimensional systems. When the Fermi energy lies in gaps, the Fermi system on the optical superlattice is a topological insulator characterized by a nonzero topological invariant. The topological nature can be revealed by observing the density profile of a trapped fermion system, which displays plateaus with their positions uniquely determined by the ration of wavelengths of the bichromatic optical lattice. The butterfly-like spectrum of the superlattice system can be also determined from the finite-temperature density profiles of the trapped fermion system. This finding opens an alternative avenue to study the topological phases and Hofstadter-like spectrum in one-dimensional optical lattices.

Wigner crystal induced by dipole-dipole interaction in one-dimensional optical lattices

We demonstrate that the static structure factor, momentum distribution and density distribution provide clear signatures of the emergence of Wigner crystal for the fermionic dipolar gas with strongly repulsive dipole-dipole interactions trapped in one-dimensional optical lattices. Our numerical evidences are based on the exact diagonalization of the microscopic effective lattice Hamiltonian of few particles interacting with long-range interactions. As a comparison, we also study the system with only nearest-neighbor interactions, which displays quite different behaviors from the dipolar system in the regime of strong repulsion.

Quantum Information Approach to Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Tilted Double-Well System

We study the ground state properties of bosons in a tilted double-well system. We use fidelity susceptibility to identify the possible ground state transitions under different tilt values. For a very small tilt (for example $10^{-10}$), two transitions are found. For a moderate tilt (for example $10^{-3}$), only one transition is found. For a large tilt (for example $10^{-1}$), no transition is found. We explain this by analyzing the spectrum of the ground state. The quantum discord and total correlation of the ground state under different tilts are also calculated to indicate those transitions. In the transition region, both quantities have peaks decaying exponentially with particle number $N$. This means for a finite-size system the transition region cannot be explained by the mean-field theory, but in the large-$N$ limit it can be.

Quantum criticality of a one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture

The one-dimensional interacting Bose-Fermi mixtures, exhibiting quantum phase transitions at zero temperature, are particularly valuable for the study of quantum critical phenomena. In the present paper, we analytically study quantum phase diagram, equation of state and quantum criticality of the Bose-Fermi mixture using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations. We show that thermodynamical properties display universal scaling behaviour at quantum criticality. Furthermore, quantum criticality of the Bose-Fermi mixture in an harmonic trap is also studied within the local density approximation. We thus demonstrate that the phase diagram and critical properties of the bulk system provide insights into understanding universal features of many-body critical phenomena.

Absence of Wigner molecules in one-dimensional few-fermion systems with short-range interactions

We study by means of exact-diagonalization techniques the ground state of a few-fermion system with strong short-range repulsive interactions trapped by a harmonic potential in one spatial dimension. Even when the ground-state density profile displays at strong coupling very well pronounced Friedel oscillations with a `4k_F periodicity', the pair correlation function does not show any signature of Wigner-molecule-type correlations. For the sake of comparison, we present also numerical results for few-electron systems with Coulomb interactions, demonstrating that their ground state at strong coupling is, on the contrary, a Wigner molecule.

Quantum dynamics of hard-core bosons in tilted bichromatic optical lattices

We study the dynamics of strongly repulsive Bose gas in tilted or driven bichromatic optical lattices. Using the Bose-Fermi mapping and exact numerical method, we calculate the reduced single-particle density matrices, and study the dynamics of density profile, momentum distribution and condensate fraction. We show the oscillating and breathing mode of dynamics, and depletion of condensate for short time dynamics. For long time dynamics, we clearly show the reconstruction of system at integer multiples of Bloch-Zener time. We also show how to achieve clear Bloch oscillation and Landau-Zener tunnelling for many-particle systems.

Critical properties of Sudden Quench Dynamics in the anisotropic XY Model

We study the zero temperature quantum dynamical critical behavior of the anisotropic XY chain under a sudden quench in a transverse field. We demonstrate theoretically that both quench magnetic susceptibility and two-particle quench correlation can be used to describe the dynamical quantum phase transition (QPT) properties. Either the quench magnetic susceptibility or the derivative of correlation functions as a function of initial magnetic field $a$ exhibits a divergence at the critical points when final magnetic field $b$ is fixed. A special case that final magnetic field $b$ is just at the critical point is discussed separately. Some of the critical exponents of the dynamical QPT are obtained and the long-range correlation of the quench system is analyzed. We also compare our result with that of the static QPT.
