Spectroscopy and spin dynamics for strongly interacting few spinor bosons in one-dimensional traps

We consider a one-dimensional trapped gas of strongly interacting few spin-1 atoms which can be described by an effective spin chain Hamiltonian. Away from the SU(3) integrable point, where the energy spectrum is highly degenerate, the rules of ordering and crossing of the energy levels and the symmetry of the eigenstates in the regime of large but finite repulsion have been elucidated. We study the spin-mixing dynamics which is shown to be very sensitive to the ratio between the two channel interactions g0/g2 and the effective spin chain transfers the quantum states more perfectly than the Heisenberg bilinear-biquadratic spin chain.

Dynamical signature of localization-delocalization transition in one-dimensional incommensurate lattice

We investigate the quench dynamics of a one-dimensional incommensurate lattice described by the Aubry-André model by a sudden change of the strength of incommensurate potential $Δ$ and unveil that the dynamical signature of localization-delocalization transition can be characterized by the occurrence of zero points in the Loschmit echo. For the quench process with quenching taking place between two limits of $Δ=0$ and $Δ=\infty$, we give analytical expressions of the Loschmidt echo, which indicate the existence of a series of zero points in the Loschmidt echo. For a general quench process, we calculate the Loschmidt echo numerically and analyze its statistical behavior. Our results show that if both the initial and post-quench Hamiltonian are in extended phase or localized phase, Loschmidt echo will always be greater than a positive number; however if they locate in different phases, Loschmidt echo can reach nearby zero at some time intervals.

Fate of Weyl semimetals in the presence of incommensurate potentials

We investigate the effect of the incommensurate potential on Weyl semimetal, which is proposed to be realized in ultracold atomic systems trapped in three-dimensional optical lattices. For the system without the Fermi arc, we find that the Weyl points are robust against the incommensurate potential and the system enters into a metallic phase only when the incommensurate potential strength exceeds a critical value. We unveil the trastition by analysing the properties of wave functions and the density of states as a function of the incommensurate potential strength. We also study the system with Fermi arcs and find the Fermi arcs are sensitive against the incommensurate potential and can be destoryed by a weak incommensurate potential.

Transport through a non-Hermitian Aharonov-Bohm ring with physical gain and loss

We investigate a non-Hermitian Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring system with a quantum dot (QD) embedded in each of its two arms. The energy levels of the QDs are complex in order to take into account the physical gain or loss of the ring system during its interacting processes with the environment. When there is magnetic flux threading through the ring, by allocating the flux phase factor into the tunneling amplitudes between the QDs and the leads in different ways, the Hamiltonian of the system can be written into different formalisms. We calculate the transmission through the ring by using these different non-Hermitian Hamiltonians and prove that it is not dependent on the way we treat the phase factor, as in the Hermitian case. In addition, with appropriate parameters, the asymmetric Fano profile will show up in the conductance spectrum just by tuning the physical gain and loss of the system. The Fano effect originates from the interferences of electrons traversing different channels which are broadened or narrowed down due to the interaction between the QDs and the environment. The proof we provide and the transport properties revealed in this paper demonstrate the influences of the environment on an otherwise isolated system and pave the way for the further studies on non-Hermitian AB ring systems.

Chiral topological insulating phases from three-dimensional nodal loop semimetals

We identify a topological Z index for three dimensional chiral insulators with P*T symmetry where two Hamiltonian terms define a nodal loop. Such systems may belong in the AIII or DIII symmetry class. The Z invariant is a winding number assigned to the nodal loop and has a correspondence to the geometric relation between the nodal loop and the zeroes of the gap terms. Dirac cone edge states under open boundary conditions are in correspondence with the winding numbers assigned to the nodal loops. We verify our method with the low-energy effective Hamiltonian of a three-dimensional material of topological insulators in the Bi$_2$Te$_3$ family.

Quantum walks in commensurate off-diagonal Aubry-André-Harper model

Due to the topological nature of Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model, exotic edge states have been found existing in one-dimensional periodic and quasiperiodic lattices. In this article, we investigate continuous-time quantum walks of identical particles initially located on either edge of commensurate AAH lattices in detail. It is shown that the quantum walker is delocalized among the whole lattice until the strength of periodic modulation is strong enough. The inverse participation ratios (IPRs) for all of the eigenstates are calculated. It is found that the localization properties of the quantum walker is mainly determined by the IPRs of the topologically protected edge states. More interestingly, the edge states are shown to have an exotic `\emph{repulsion}' effect on quantum walkers initiated from the lattice sites inside the bulk. Furthermore, we examine the role of nearest-neighbour interaction on the quantum walks of two identical fermions. Clear enhancement of the `\emph{repulsion}' effect by strong interaction has been shown.

Generalized Aubry-André-Harper model with p-wave superconducting pairing

We investigate a generalized Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model with p-wave superconducting pairing. Both the hopping amplitudes between the nearest neighboring lattice sites and the on-site potentials in this system are modulated by a cosine function with a periodicity of $1/α$. In the incommensurate case [$α=(\sqrt{5}-1)/2$], due to the modulations on the hopping amplitudes, the critical region of this quasiperiodic system is significantly reduced and the system becomes more easily to be turned from extended states to localized states. In the commensurate case ($α= 1/2$), we find that this model shows three different phases when we tune the system parameters: Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH)-like trivial, SSH-like topological, and Kitaev-like topological phases. The phase diagrams and the topological quantum numbers for these phases are presented in this work. This generalized AAH model combined with superconducting pairing provides us with a useful testfield for studying the phase transitions from extended states to Anderson localized states and the transitions between different topological phases.

Exotic Multi-fold Vortex Lattices of Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices

We investigate the ground state of two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in square optical lattices and demonstrate the existence of rich phases with different lattice structures, which is closely related to the degenerate structure of single particle energy spectrum induced by the competition of spin-orbit coupling and optical lattices. We find that the ground state is in the phase with either parity-time-reversal or parity symmetry by direct numerical simulation. We show the phase diagram of ground state in the whole regime of spin-orbit coupling strength, and particularly find that the system supports multi-fold vortex lattices, in which ground state holds half-quantum vortex lattices, vortex-antivortex pair lattices and fundamental vortex lattices, simultaneously, when single particle energy minimums touch the boundary of the first Brillouin zone.

Transport through a quantum dot coupled to two Majorana bound states

We investigate electron transport inside a ring system composed of a quantum dot (QD) coupled to two Majorana bound states confined at the ends of a one-dimensional topological superconductor nanowire. By tuning the magnetic flux threading through the ring, the model system we consider can be switched into states with or without zero-energy modes when the nanowire is in its topological phase. We find that the Fano profile in the conductance spectrum due to the interference between bound and continuum states exhibits markedly different features for these two different situations, which consequently can be used to detect the Majorana zero-energy mode. Most interestingly, as a periodic function of magnetic flux, the conductance shows $2π$ periodicity when the two Majorana bound states are nonoverlapping (as in an infinitely long nanowire) but displays $4π$ periodicity when the overlapping becomes nonzero (as in a finite length nanowire). We map the model system into a QD--Kitaev ring in the Majorana fermion representation and affirm these different characteristics by checking the energy spectrum.

Almost mobility edges and existence of critical regions in one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattices

We study a one-dimensional quasiperiodic system described by the Aubry-André model in the small wave vector limit and demonstrate the existence of almost mobility edges and critical regions in the system. It is well known that the eigenstates of the Aubry-André model are either extended or localized depending on the strength of incommensurate potential $V$ being less or bigger than a critical value $V_c$, and thus no mobility edge exists. However, it was shown in a recent work that this conclusion does not hold true when the wave vector $α$ of the incommensurate potential is small, and for the system with $V V_c$, for which all eigenstates are localized states, but can be divided into extended, critical and localized states in their dual space by utilizing the self-duality property of the Aubry-André model.

Quantum walks accompanied by spin flipping in one-dimensional optical lattices

We investigate continuous-time quantum walks of two fermionic atoms loaded in one-dimensional optical lattices with on-site interaction and subjected to a Zeeman field. The quantum walks are accompanied by spin-flipping processes. We calculate the time-dependent density distributions of the two fermions with opposite spins which are initially positioned on the center site by means of exact numerical method. Besides the usual fast linear expansion behavior, we find an interesting spin-flipping induced localization in the time-evolution of density distributions. We show that the fast linear expansion behavior could be restored by simply ramping on the Zeeman field or further increasing the spin-flipping strength. The intrinsic origin of this exotic phenomenon is attributed to the emergence of a flat band in the single particle spectrum of the system. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of on-site interaction on the dynamics of the quantum walkers. The two-particle correlations are calculated and signal of localization is also shown therein. A simple potential experimental application of this interesting phenomenon is proposed.

Spectral statistics, finite-size scaling and multifractal analysis of quasiperiodic chain with p-wave pairing

We study the spectral and wavefunction properties of a one-dimensional incommensurate system with p-wave pairing and unveil that the system demonstrates a series of particular properties in its ciritical region. By studying the spectral statistics, we show that the bandwidth distribution and level spacing distribution in the critical region follow inverse power laws, which however break down in the extended and localized regions. By performing a finite-size scaling analysis, we can obtain some critical exponents of the system and find these exponents fulfilling a hyperscaling law in the whole critical region. We also carry out a multifractal analysis on system's wavefuntions by using a box-counting method and unveil the wavefuntions displaying different behaviors in the critical, extended and localized regions.

Topologically nontrivial states in one-dimensional nonlinear bichromatic superlattices

We study topological properties of one-dimensional nonlinear bichromatic superlattices and unveil the effect of nonlinearity on topological states. We find the existence of nontrivial edge solitions, which distribute on the boundaries of the lattice with their chemical potential located in the linear gap regime and are sensitive to the phase parameter of the superlattice potential. We further demonstrate that the topological property of the nonlinear Bloch bands can be characterized by topological Chern numbers defined in the extended two-dimensional parameter space. In addition, we discuss that the composition relations between the nolinear Bloch waves and gap solitions for the nonlinear superlattices. The stabilities of edge solitons are also studied.

Bosonic edge states in gapped honeycomb lattices

By quantum Monte Carlo simulations of bosons in gapped honeycomb lattices, we show the existence of bosonic edge states. For single layer honeycomb lattice, bosonic edge states can be controlled to appear, cross the gap and merge into bulk states by an on-site potential applied on the outmost sites of the boundary. On bilayer honeycomb lattice, bosonic edge state traversing the gap at half filling is demonstrated. The topological origin of the bosonic edge states is discussed with pseudo Berry curvature. The results will simulate experimental studies of these exotic bosonic edge states with ultracold bosons trapped in honeycomb optical lattices.

Strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixtures in one dimension

We study one-dimensional strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixtures by both the exact Bethe-ansatz method and variational perturbation theory within the degenerate ground state subspace of the system in the infinitely repulsive limit. Based on the exact solution of the one-dimensional Bose-Fermi gas with equal boson-boson and boson-fermion interaction strengths, we demonstrate that the ground state energy is degenerate for different Bose-Fermi configurations and the degeneracy is lifted when the interaction deviates the infinitely interacting limit. We then show that the ground properties in the strongly interacting regime can be well characterized by using the variational perturbation method within the degenerate ground state subspace, which can be applied to deal with more general cases with anisotropic interactions and in external traps. Our results indicate that the total ground-state density profile in the strongly repulsive regime behaves like the polarized noninteracting fermions, whereas the density distributions of bosons and fermions display different properties for different Bose-Fermi configurations and are sensitive to the anisotropy of interactions.

Topological invariants for phase transition points of one-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological systems

We study topological properties of phase transition points of two topologically non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ classes (D and DIII) in one dimension by assigning a Berry phase defined on closed circles around the gap closing points in the parameter space of momentum and a transition driving parameter. While the topological property of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ system is generally characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant, we identify that it has a correspondence to the quantized Berry phase protected by the particle-hole symmetry, and then give a proper definition of Berry phase to the phase transition point. By applying our scheme to some specific models of class D and DIII, we demonstrate that the topological phase transition can be well characterized by the Berry phase of the transition point, which reflects the change of Berry phases of topologically different phases across the phase transition point.

Quantum Hall Effects in a Non-Abelian Honeycomb Lattice

We study the tunable quantum Hall effects in a non-Abelian honeycomb optical lattice which is a many-Dirac-points system. We find that the quantum Hall effects present different features as change as relative strengths of several perturbations. Namely, a gauge-field-dressed next-nearest-neighbor hopping can induce the quantum spin Hall effect and a Zeeman field can induce a so-called quantum anomalous valley Hall effect which includes two copies of quantum Hall states with opposite Chern numbers and counter-propagating edge states. Our study extends the borders of the field of quantum Hall effects in honeycomb optical lattice when the internal valley degrees of freedom enlarge.

Strongly interacting one-dimensional quantum gas mixtures with weak p-wave interactions

We study one-dimensional strongly interacting quantum gas mixtures, including both the Bose-Fermi and spin-1/2 Fermi-Fermi mixtures, with weak p-wave interactions between intra-component fermions, and demonstrate that the weak p-wave interaction can not be omitted in the strongly interacting regime where the strength of p-wave interactions is comparable with the inverse of the strength of strongly repulsive s-wave interactions. While the total density distribution is not sensitive to the weak p-wave interaction, we find that the p-wave interaction plays an important role in determining the species-dependent (or spin-dependent) density distributions and produces significant physical effects on the low-energy spin dynamics. We also derive effective spin-exchange models for strongly interacting quantum gas mixtures with weak p-wave interactions, which indicate that a quantum phase transition from anti-ferromagnetic state to ferromagnetic state can be induced by tuning the relative strengths of intra-component and inter-component interactions.
