Convolutional Codes from Cyclic Codes with Guaranteed Free and Local Minimum Distances

This paper presents an algebraic method to construct convolutional codes with guaranteed \emph{free and local minimum distances} without limit based on cyclic codes of odd lengths. The constructions are simple but effective, and no computer search is needed. For any two positive integers $r$ and $t$ with $1 \leq r < t$, a rate-$r/t$ convolutional code $\mathcal{C}_{\text{convol}}$ can be constructed by using a chain of $r$ cyclic codes $\mathcal{C}_0, \mathcal{C}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{C}_{r-1}$ of the same length $n$ which satisfy the inclusion condition, $\mathcal{C}_0 \supset \mathcal{C}_1 \supset \ldots \supset \mathcal{C}_{r-1}$. Such a convolutional code $\mathcal{C}_{\text{convol}}$ is composed of a \emph{semi-infinite chain of identical local codes} confined in a diagonal band of width $n$. Each local code $\mathcal{C}_{\text{local}}$ of $\mathcal{C}_{\text{convol}}$ is formed from the $r$ cyclic codes in the code chain and is a specially localized subcode of the \emph{mother code} $\mathcal{C}_0$ in the code chain. The minimum distance $d_{\text{local}}$ of each local code of $\mathcal{C}_{\text{convol}}$ is lower bounded by the minimum distance $d_0$ of the mother code $\mathcal{C}_0$ in the code chain. The local structure of $\mathcal{C}_{\text{convol}}$ allows it to be decoded based on a designed parity-check matrix of the mother code $\mathcal{C}_0$ using a sliding window decoding scheme.

No Silver Bullet: Boosting GaussDB Performance on the 30TB TPC-H Workload

GaussDB is Huawei's premier database system, designed for large-scale deployments and the most demanding workloads. It is a distributed shared-nothing system, capable of handling all types of workloads. This paper outlines a series of modifications to GaussDB aimed at improving its performance on large-scale and complex analytical workloads. After these changes, its performance on the TPC-H workload exceeded the best published result by 40% at 30 TB. The key enhancements to achieve this elite performance include adopting a pipeline execution model, a faster and more scalable inter-node data shuffle, exploiting a unified bus and unified remote memory access. We also expanded the support of cost-based Bloom filter placement and implemented several Bloom filter streaming strategies, enabling their use across nodes.

A Global Coding Scheme for OFDM over Finite Fields

This paper proposes a highly efficient global coded-multiplexing scheme, conceptualized as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing over a finite field (FF-OFDM), for reliable multiuser communications. By utilizing a prime length cyclic code and its Hadamard equivalents as algebraic subcarriers, independent data streams are globally multiplexed via a Galois Fourier Transform (GFT) without rate loss. We show that this finite-field synthesis intrinsically generates a global Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check (QC-LDPC) code over $\mathrm{GF}(2^s)$, whose parity-check matrix is governed by the structural rigor of partial geometries. At the receiver, supported by a binary decomposition theorem, the received nonbinary global codeword is jointly decoded using parallel binary iterative soft-decision algorithms prior to demultiplexing. This joint decoding enables seamless reliability information sharing across all user streams, achieving near-bound error performance, rapid convergence without error floors, and strictly linear amortized decoding complexity.

Quantum Kinetic Theory for Quantum Chromodynamics

We develop a quantum kinetic theory for QCD, which incorporates all leading order collision terms. At lowest order in gradient expansion, it reproduces the spin-averaged Boltzmann equation with both elastic and inelastic collisions. At next order in gradient expansion, the solution to the quantum kinetic equations give spin polarization of on-shell quarks and gluons in quark-gluon plasma when the gradients are of hydrodynamic ones. A power counting in the coupling shows the spin polarization behaves differently in vortical and non-vortical gradients: the former is free of collisional contribution to leading order, while the latter contains a collisional contribution at parametrically the same order as the free theory counterpart. We also find the inelastic collision in a spin basis provides a possible mechanism for conversion between spin and orbital angular momentum.

Distorted quarkonia and spin alignment

It is well-known that atoms can change their shape when subject to external electromagnetic fields. Analogous phenomenon is expected for particles, which are much smaller in size with the corresponding shape change much harder to observe. We point out that shape change of particles can be accessed by measurements of their spin alignment. Motivated by recent measurements of spin alignment in relativistic heavy ion collisions, we consider quarkonia in electromagnetic fields as an example. We show that the quarkonia spin alignment receives both spin contribution from spin states mixing and orbital contribution from shape change. By a proper choice of quantization axis, it is possible to switch off the spin contribution, leaving only the orbital contribution. This makes spin alignment measurement a valuable probe of quarkonium structure.

Kinetic theories: from curved space to flat space

We generalize the equivalence between off-equilibrium state and gravitational perturbation of equilibrium state from dynamics of macroscopic quantities to that of microscopic particles. We also generalize the equivalence to incorporate off-equilibrium state with vorticity by torsional perturbation to equilibrium state. The equivalence is achieved by mapping kinetic theories of spinless and spinning particles in torsional curved space to flat space through suitable choice of inertial frame that eliminates geodesic forces on particles. The equivalence has been shown for hydrodynamic and elastic regimes. In the latter case, we predict spin polarization induced by time-variation of shear strain in elastic materials. We also provide an order-of-magnitude estimate for the polarization in Dirac semi-metal.

Near Data Processing in Taurus Database

Huawei's cloud-native database system GaussDB for MySQL (also known as Taurus) stores data in a separate storage layer consisting of a pool of storage servers. Each server has considerable compute power making it possible to push data reduction operations (selection, projection, and aggregation) close to storage. This paper describes the design and implementation of near data processing (NDP) in Taurus. NDP has several benefits: it reduces the amount of data shipped over the network; frees up CPU capacity in the compute layer; and reduces query run time, thereby enabling higher system throughput. Experiments with the TPCH benchmark (100 GB) showed that 18 out of 22 queries benefited from NDP; data shipped was reduced by 63 percent; and CPU time by 50 percent. On Q15 the impact was even higher: data shipped was reduced by 98 percent; CPU time by 91 percent; and run time by 80 percent.

Spin polarization of holographic baryon in strongly coupled fluid

The spin polarization for baryon in a hydrodynamic medium has been extensively studied in the weakly coupled regime using quantum kinetic theory. As a first study of this problem in the strongly coupled regime, we investigate holographically the spectral function of a probe baryon in the fluid-gravity background. This is done by carefully performing gradient expansion of the Dirac equation in the fluid-gravity background. Different contributions in the expansion are understood in terms of density matrices of the probe baryon and the medium. The resulting spectral functions indicate that the holographic baryonic is polarized as responses to fluid acceleration, shear stress and vorticity. The structures of the responses are similar to those found in weakly coupled studies.

Spin alignment of quarkonia in vortical quark-gluon plasma

The spin alignment of $J/\psi$ with respect to event plane in relativistic heavy ion collisions exhibits a significant signal. We propose a possible mechanism for spin alignment through spin dependent dissociation of quarkonia in a vortical quark-gluon plasma. The spin dependent dissociation is realized through inelastic scattering between constituents of quarkonium and those of quark-gluon plasma polarized by the vorticity. The spin dependent dissociation rate is found to depend on the directions of vorticity, quantization axis, and quark momentum. We implement our results in a dissociation dominated evolution model for quarkonia in the Bjorken flow, finding the spin $0$ state is slightly suppressed compared to the average of the other two, which is consistent with the sign found in experiments. We also find absence of logarithmic enhancement in binding energy in the vortical correction to dissociation rate, which is understood from the requirement that a spin dependent dissociation can only come from quark coupling to a pair of chromomagnetic and chromoelectric field.

Polarized Dissociation and Spin Alignment of Moving Quarkonium in Quark-Gluon Plasma

Recent experiments have found spin alignment of $J/\psi$ with respect to event plane in heavy ion collisions, suggesting a medium effect that is spin dependent. We propose a possible mechanism with polarized dissociation from the motion of $J/\psi$ with respect to the medium. We calculate polarized dissociation rate for quarkonium spin triplet state from spin chromomagnetic coupling in the potential non-relativistic QCD framework. This is done for the leading order gluo-dissociation process and next to leading order inelastic Coulomb scattering process. The polarized dissociation rate is expressed as a function of relative velocity between quarkonium and QGP and the quantization axis. Applying the polarized dissociation rate to quarkonium evolution with dissociation effect only in a Bjorken flow, we find the spin $0$ state to dissociate less than the other spin states, leading to positive $\rho_{00}-1/3$. Regeneration contribution is expected to give a contribution with the opposite sign.

Taurus Database: How to be Fast, Available, and Frugal in the Cloud

Using cloud Database as a Service (DBaaS) offerings instead of on-premise deployments is increasingly common. Key advantages include improved availability and scalability at a lower cost than on-premise alternatives. In this paper, we describe the design of Taurus, a new multi-tenant cloud database system. Taurus separates the compute and storage layers in a similar manner to Amazon Aurora and Microsoft Socrates and provides similar benefits, such as read replica support, low network utilization, hardware sharing and scalability. However, the Taurus architecture has several unique advantages. Taurus offers novel replication and recovery algorithms providing better availability than existing approaches using the same or fewer replicas. Also, Taurus is highly optimized for performance, using no more than one network hop on critical paths and exclusively using append-only storage, delivering faster writes, reduced device wear, and constant-time snapshots. This paper describes Taurus and provides a detailed description and analysis of the storage node architecture, which has not been previously available from the published literature.

Spin polarization for massive fermion in a shear flow: complete results at $O(\partial)$

Motivated by the key role of shear induced polarization in understanding the local spin polarization puzzle of $\Lambda$ hyperons in heavy ion collisions, we perform a complete analysis of spin polarization of massive fermion in a quantum electrodynamic plasma with shear flow. Apart from the well-known spin-shear coupling in free theory, we include two more collision dependent contributions: one is a non-dynamical contribution fixed by shifted spin-averaged distribution in steady state; the other is a dynamical contribution following from spin evolution. Despite of the dependencies on collision, we find the dependencies on coupling drop out in the final results. These contributions can lead to significant enhancement of the spin-shear coupling in phenomenologically interesting regime.

Spin Polarized Quasi-particle in Off-equilibrium Medium

It is usually believed that physics in off-equilibrium state characterized by hydrodynamic gradient can be equivalently studied using equilibrium state with suitable metric perturbation. We scrutinize this assumption using chiral kinetic theory in curved space, focusing on spin response to hydrodynamic gradient. Two effects of metric perturbation have been identified: one is to change particle motion by scattering it off the metric fields, which does capture spin response to hydrodynamic gradient, but is limited by kinematic condition in the scattering picture. The other is the genuine effect of off-equilibrium state, which is realizable by mapping the equilibrium state in curved space to flat space through a suitable frame choice. It lifts the kinematic condition in the spin response to hydrodynamic gradient. We classify off-equilibrium effect on spin polarization into modifications of (i) spectral function; (ii) distribution function; (iii) KMS relation. While the last two have been studied using chiral kinetic theory, the first one is usually ignored in kinetic description. We perform a detailed analysis on the first one, finding the radiative correction to spectral function leads to a polarized quasi-particle. The degeneracy of spin responses to different hydrodynamic sources at tree-level is also lifted by radiative correction.

Transient spin modes from relaxational axial kinetic theory

We study the dynamics of spin mode by solving the axial kinetic equations under the relaxation time approximation in the presence of dissipative sources. We find transient spin modes in response to electric field with spacetime inhomogeneity, fluid acceleration and shear. To the lowest order in spatial momentum $k$, we find the responses to electric field and acceleration can be interpreted as retarded response to temporal variations of magnetic field and vorticity respectively. The response to shear occurs at $O(k^2)$ and can be reduced to retarded response to spatial variation of vorticity. Beyond lowest order, the responses to all three sources are non-local with branch cut in the dispersions. We argue that the non-locality is a consequence of the quasi-particle picture underlying the kinetic description. We also analyze spin transport equation taking into account spin response to temporal and spatial variations of vorticity. We find the corrections turn the original first order spin transport equation into a third order one (or a second order one in the homogeneous limit). The change in order of transport equation is a consequence of non-local nature of the responses, suggesting possible breakdown of gradient expansion in spin hydrodynamics for microscopic theories with quasi-particles.

Steady state, displacement current and spin polarization for massless fermion in a shear flow

We consider spin polarization of massless fermions in a shear flow, whose complete contributions contain magnetization current and side-jump current known from collisional chiral kinetic theory. We argue that the side-jump current adopts interpretation of displacement current. We explicitly determine the displacement current contribution in the steady state reached in shear flow for a QED plasma. We find the displacement contribution enhances the magnetization contribution at small and large momenta, but leads to a suppression effect at intermediate momenta. Major differences from previous studies on collisional effect are: (i) the fermions are in the same steady state as the medium rather than being probes; (ii) Compton scattering and pair annihilation are also included in addition to the Coulomb scattering considered before.

Finite Field Multiple Access for Sourced Massive Random Access with Finite Blocklength

For binary source transmission, this paper introduces the concept of element-pair (EP) and establishes that when the Cartesian product of $J$ distinct EPs satisfies the unique sum-pattern mapping (USPM) structural property, these $J$ EPs can form a uniquely-decodable EP (UD-EP) code. EPs are treated as virtual resources allocated to different users in finite fields, serving to distinguish users. This approach enables the reordering of multiplexing and channel encoding modules, effectively addressing the finite blocklength (FBL) challenge in multiuser reliable transmission. Next, we introduce an orthogonal EP code $\Psi_{\rm o, B}$ constructed over an extension field GF($2^m$). Using this EP code, we develop a time-division mode of finite-field multiple-access (FFMA) systems, consisting of sparse-form and diagonal-form structures. Based on the diagonal-form (DF) structure, we present a specific configuration, referred to as polarization-adjusted DF-FFMA, which can simultaneously obtain the power gain and coding gain from the entire blocklength. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed FFMA systems significantly improve error performance over a Gaussian multiple-access channel, compared to a slotted ALOHA system.
