High-flux dual-phase percolation membrane for oxygen separation

A series of composites based on (100-x)wt.%Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-δ-xwt.%Pr0.6Ca0.4FeO3-δ (x = 25, 40 and 50) doped with the cheap and abundant alkaline earth metal Ca2+ at the A-site has been successfully designed and fabricated. The crystal structure, oxygen permeability, phase and CO2 stability were evaluated. The composition of 60wt.%Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-δ-40wt.%Pr0.6Ca0.4FeO3-δ(60CPO-40PCFO) possesses the highest oxygen permeability among three studied composites. At 1000 oC, the oxygen permeation fluxes through the 0.3 mm-thickness 60CPO-40PCFO membranes after porous La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-δ each to 1.00 mL cm-2 min-1 and 0.62 mL cm-2 min-1 under air/He and air/CO2 gradients, respectively. In situ XRD results demonstrated that the 60CPO-40PCFO sample displayed a perfect structural stability in air as well as CO2-containing atmosphere. Thus, low-cost, Co-free and Sr-free 60CPO-40PCFO has high CO2 stability and is economical and environmental friendly since the expensive and volatile element Co was replaced by Fe and Sr was waived since it easily forms carbonates.

Effects of Al content on the oxygen permeability through dual-phase membrane 60Ce$_{0.9}$Pr$_{0.1}$O$_{2-δ}$-40Pr$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$Fe$_{1-x}$Al$_x$O$_{3-δ}$

Ceramic dual-phase oxygen transport membranes with the composition of 60wt.% Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-δ-40wt.%Pr0.6Sr0.4Fe1-xAlxO3-δ (x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0) (60CPO-40PSF1-xAxO) based on 60Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-δ-40Pr0.6Sr0.4FeO3-δ doped Al was successfully synthesized through a modified Pechini method. Crystal structure, surface microtopography and oxygen permeability are investigated systematically. The cell parameters of perovskite phase first increased and then decreased with the increase of Al content, which is related to the radius of the Al3+ and the formation of impurity phase. As x ranges from 0.1 to 0.8, the oxygen permeability of the materials first increases and then decreases, and the maximum value of oxygen permeation rate for 60CPO-40PSF1-xAxO membranes with 0.4mm thickness at 1000 °C is 1.12 mL min-1 cm-2 when x = 0.4. XRD measurements revealed high temperature stability and CO2-tolerant property of the dual-phase composites. The partial replacement of Fe$^{3+}$/Fe$^{4+}$ by Al$^{3+}$ causes the material not only to exhibit good stability, but also to increase the oxygen permeability of the membranes.

The Unusual Suppression of Superconducting Transition Temperature in Double-Doping 2H-NbSe$_2$

2H-NbSe2 is one of the most widely researched transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductors, which undergoes charge-density wave (CDW) transition at TCDW about 33 K and superconducting transition at Tc of 7.3 K. To explore the relation between its superconductivity and Fermi surface nesting, we combined S substitution with Cu intercalation in 2H-NbSe2 to make CuxNbSe2-ySy. Upon systematic substitution of S and intercalation of Cu ions into 2H-NbSe2, we found that when the Cu and S contents increases, the Tc decreases in CuxNbSe2-ySy. While at higher x and y values, Tc keeps a constant value near 2 K, which is not commonly observed for a layered TMD. For comparison, we found the simultaneous substitution of Nb by Cu and Se by S in CuxNb1-xSe2-ySy lowered the Tc substantially faster. We construct a superconducting phase diagrams for our double-doping compounds in contrast with the related single-ions doping systems.

Large-scale Inversion of Subsurface Flow Using Discrete Adjoint Method

Sensitivity analysis plays an important role in searching for constitutive parameters (e.g. permeability) subsurface flow simulations. The mathematics behind is to solve a dynamic constrained optimization problem. Traditional methods like finite difference and forward sensitivity analysis require computational cost that increases linearly with the number of parameters times number of cost functions. Discrete adjoint sensitivity analysis (SA) is gaining popularity due to its computational efficiency. This algorithm requires a forward run followed by a backward run who involves integrating adjoint equation backward in time. This was done by doing one forward solve and store the snapshot by checkpointing. Using the checkpoint data, the adjoint equation is numerically integrated. The computational cost of this algorithm only depends on the number of cost functions and does not depend on the number of parameters. The algorithm is highly powerful when the parameter space is large, and in our case of heterogeneous permeability the number of parameters is proportional to the number of grid cells. The aim of this project is to implement the discrete sensitivity analysis method in parallel to solve realistic subsurface problems. To achieve this goal, we propose to implement the algorithm in parallel using data structures such as TSAdjoint and TAO. This paper dealt with large-scale subsurface flow inversion problem with discrete adjoint method. This method can effectively reduce the computational cost in sensitivity analysis.

A Bayesian Finite Mixture Model with Variable Selection for Data with Mixed-type Variables

Finite mixture model is an important branch of clustering methods and can be applied on data sets with mixed types of variables. However, challenges exist in its applications. First, it typically relies on the EM algorithm which could be sensitive to the choice of initial values. Second, biomarkers subject to limits of detection (LOD) are common to encounter in clinical data, which brings censored variables into finite mixture model. Additionally, researchers are recently getting more interest in variable importance due to the increasing number of variables that become available for clustering. To address these challenges, we propose a Bayesian finite mixture model to simultaneously conduct variable selection, account for biomarker LOD and obtain clustering results. We took a Bayesian approach to obtain parameter estimates and the cluster membership to bypass the limitation of the EM algorithm. To account for LOD, we added one more step in Gibbs sampling to iteratively fill in biomarker values below or above LODs. In addition, we put a spike-and-slab type of prior on each variable to obtain variable importance. Simulations across various scenarios were conducted to examine the performance of this method. Real data application on electronic health records was also conducted.

Hybrid Density- and Partition-based Clustering Algorithm for Data with Mixed-type Variables

Clustering is an essential technique for discovering patterns in data. The steady increase in amount and complexity of data over the years led to improvements and development of new clustering algorithms. However, algorithms that can cluster data with mixed variable types (continuous and categorical) remain limited, despite the abundance of data with mixed types particularly in the medical field. Among existing methods for mixed data, some posit unverifiable distributional assumptions or that the contributions of different variable types are not well balanced. We propose a two-step hybrid density- and partition-based algorithm (HyDaP) that can detect clusters after variables selection. The first step involves both density-based and partition-based algorithms to identify the data structure formed by continuous variables and recognize the important variables for clustering; the second step involves partition-based algorithm together with a novel dissimilarity measure we designed for mixed data to obtain clustering results. Simulations across various scenarios and data structures were conducted to examine the performance of the HyDaP algorithm compared to commonly used methods. We also applied the HyDaP algorithm on electronic health records to identify sepsis phenotypes.

In Search of a Key Value Store with High Performance and High Availability

In recent year, the write-heavy applications is more and more prevalent. How to efficiently handle this sort of workload is one of intensive research direction in the field of database system. The overhead caused by write operation is mainly issued by two reasons: 1) the hardware level, i.e., the IO cost caused by logging. We can't remove this cost in short period 2) the dual-copy software architecture and serial replay. The born of log as database architecture is originated to overcome the software defect. But existing systems treating log as database either are built on top of special infrastructure such as infiniband or NVRam (Non-Volatile Random access memory) which is far from widely available or are constructed with the help of other system such as Dynamo which is lack of flexibility. In this paper we build only write-once key-value system called LogStore from scratch to support our instant messenger business. The key features of LogStore include: 1) a single thread per partition executing mode, which eliminates the concurrency overhead; 2) log as database to enable write-once feature and freshness on the standby. We achieve high availability by embedding replication protocol other than dependent on other infrastructure; 3) fine-grained and low overhead data buffer pool management to effectively minimize IO cost. According to our empirical evaluations LogStore has good performance in write operation, recovery and replication

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping Project: Sample Characterization

We present a detailed characterization of the 849 broad-line quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping (SDSS-RM) project. Our quasar sample covers a redshift range of 0.1<z<4.5 and is flux-limited to i_PSF<21.7 without any other cuts on quasar properties. The main sample characterization includes: 1) spectral measurements of the continuum and broad emission lines for individual objects from the coadded first-season spectroscopy in 2014; 2) identification of broad and narrow absorption lines in the spectra; 3) optical variability properties for continuum and broad lines from multi-epoch spectroscopy. We provide improved systemic redshift estimates for all quasars, and demonstrate the effects of signal-to-noise ratio on the spectral measurements. We compile measured properties for all 849 quasars along with supplemental multi-wavelength data for subsets of our sample from other surveys. The SDSS-RM sample probes a diverse range in quasar properties, and shows well detected continuum and broad-line variability for many objects from first-season monitoring data. The compiled properties serve as the benchmark for follow-up work based on SDSS-RM data. The spectral fitting tools are made public along with this work.

VRKitchen: an Interactive 3D Virtual Environment for Task-oriented Learning

One of the main challenges of advancing task-oriented learning such as visual task planning and reinforcement learning is the lack of realistic and standardized environments for training and testing AI agents. Previously, researchers often relied on ad-hoc lab environments. There have been recent advances in virtual systems built with 3D physics engines and photo-realistic rendering for indoor and outdoor environments, but the embodied agents in those systems can only conduct simple interactions with the world (e.g., walking around, moving objects, etc.). Most of the existing systems also do not allow human participation in their simulated environments. In this work, we design and implement a virtual reality (VR) system, VRKitchen, with integrated functions which i) enable embodied agents powered by modern AI methods (e.g., planning, reinforcement learning, etc.) to perform complex tasks involving a wide range of fine-grained object manipulations in a realistic environment, and ii) allow human teachers to perform demonstrations to train agents (i.e., learning from demonstration). We also provide standardized evaluation benchmarks and data collection tools to facilitate a broad use in research on task-oriented learning and beyond.

An intuitive 3D map of the Galactic warp's precession traced by classical Cepheids

The Milky Way's neutral hydrogen (HI) disk is warped and flared. However, a dearth of accurate HI-based distances has thus far prevented the development of an accurate Galactic disk model. Moreover, the extent to which our Galaxy's stellar and gas disk morphologies are mutually consistent is also unclear. Classical Cepheids, primary distance indicators with distance accuracies of 3-5%, offer a unique opportunity to develop an intuitive and accurate three-dimensional picture. Here, we establish a robust Galactic disk model based on 1339 classical Cepheids. We provide strong evidence that the warp's line of nodes is not oriented in the Galactic Center-Sun direction. Instead, it subtends a mean angle of 17.5 \pm 1 (formal) \pm 3 (systematic) and exhibits a leading spiral pattern. Our Galaxy thus follows Briggs' rule for spiral galaxies, which suggests that the origin of the warp is associated with torques forced by the massive inner disk. The stellar disk traced by Cepheids follows the gas disk in terms of their amplitudes; the stellar disk extends to at least 20 kpc. This morphology provides a crucial, updated map for studies of the kinematics and archaeology of the Galactic disk.

Chebyshev Center of the Intersection of Balls: Complexity, Relaxation and Approximation

We study the n-dimensional problem of finding the smallest ball enclosing the intersection of p given balls, the so-called Chebyshev center problem (CCB). It is a minimax optimization problem and the inner maximization is a uniform quadratic optimization problem (UQ). When p<=n, (UQ) is known to enjoy a strong duality and consequently (CCB) is solved via a standard convex quadratic programming (SQP). In this paper, we first prove that (CCB) is NP-hard and the special case when n = 2 is strongly polynomially solved. With the help of a newly introduced linear programming relaxation (LP), the (SQP) relaxation is reobtained more directly and the first approximation bound for the solution obtained by (SQP) is established for the hard case p>n. Finally, also based on (LP), we show that (CCB) is polynomially solved when either n or p-n(> 0) is fixed.

NEURON: Query Optimization Meets Natural Language Processing For Augmenting Database Education

Relational database management system (RDBMS) is a major undergraduate course taught in many universities worldwide as part of their computer science program. A core component of such course is the design and implementation of the query optimizer in a RDBMS. The goal of the query optimizer is to automatically identify the most efficient execution strategies for executing the declarative SQL queries submitted by users. The query optimization process produces a query execution plan (QEP) which represents an execution strategy for the query. Due to the complexity of the underlying query optimizer, comprehension of a QEP demands that a student is knowledgeable of implementation-specific issues related to the RDBMS. In practice, this is an unrealistic assumption to make as most students are learning database technology for the first time. Hence, it is often difficult for them to comprehend the query execution strategy undertaken by a DBMS by perusing the QEP, hindering their learning process. In this demonstration, we present a novel system called NEURON that facilitates natural language interaction with QEPs to enhance its understanding. NEURON accepts a SQL query (which may include joins, aggregation, nesting, among other things) as input, executes it, and generates a simplified natural language-based description (both in text and voice form) of the execution strategy deployed by the underlying RDBMS. Furthermore, it facilitates understanding of various features related to the QEP through a natural language-based question answering framework. We advocate that such tool, world's first of its kind, can greatly enhance students' learning of the query optimization topic.

The First Data Release of the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey

The Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS) is a new wide-field legacy imaging survey in the northern Galactic cap using the 2.3m Bok telescope. The survey will cover about 5400 deg$^2$ in the $g$ and $r$ bands, and the expected 5$σ$ depths (corrected for the Galactic extinction) in the two bands are 24.0 and 23.4 mag, respectively. BASS started observations in January 2015, and has completed about 41% of the whole area as of July 2016. The first data release contains both calibrated images and photometric catalogs obtained in 2015 and 2016. The depths of single-epoch images in the two bands are 23.4 and 22.9 mag, and the full depths of three epochs are about 24.1 and 23.5 mag, respectively.

Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) Catalog of Periodic Variable Stars

We have compiled the first all-sky mid-infrared variable-star catalog based on Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) five-year survey data. Requiring more than 100 detections for a given object, 50,282 carefully and robustly selected periodic variables are discovered, of which 34,769 (69%) are new. Most are located in the Galactic plane and near the equatorial poles. A method to classify variables based on their mid-infrared light curves is established using known variable types in the General Catalog of Variable Stars. Careful classification of the new variables results in a tally of 21,427 new EW-type eclipsing binaries, 5654 EA-type eclipsing binaries, 1312 Cepheids, and 1231 RR Lyraes. By comparison with known variables available in the literature, we estimate that the misclassification rate is 5% and 10% for short- and long-period variables, respectively. A detailed comparison of the types, periods, and amplitudes with variables in the Catalina catalog shows that the independently obtained classifications parameters are in excellent agreement. This enlarged sample of variable stars will not only be helpful to study Galactic structure and extinction properties, they can also be used to constrain stellar evolution theory and as potential candidates for the James Webb Space Telescope.

Red supergiant stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. II. Infrared properties and mid-infrared variability

The characteristics of IR properties and MIR variability of RSGs in the LMC are analyzed based on 12 bands of NIR to MIR co-added data from 2MASS, Spitzer and WISE, and $\sim$6.6 years of MIR time-series data collected by the ALLWISE and NEOWISE-R projects. 773 RSGs candidates were compiled from the literature and verified by using the CMD, SED and MIR variability. About 15\% of valid targets in the $IRAC1-IRAC2$/$IRAC2-IRAC3$ diagram may show PAH emission. We show that arbitrary dereddening Q parameters related to the IRAC4, S9W, WISE3, WISE4, and MIPS24 bands could be constructed based on a precise measurement of MIR interstellar extinction law. Several peculiar outliers in our sample are discussed, in which one outlier might be a RSG right before the explosion or an x-AGB star in the very late evolutionary stage based on the MIR spectrum and photometry. There are 744 identified RSGs in the final sample having both the WISE1- and WISE2-band time-series data. The results show that the MIR variability is increasing along with the increasing of brightness. There is a relatively tight correlation between the MIR variability, MLR, and the warm dust or continuum, where the MIR variability is evident for the targets with $K_S-WISE3>1.0~mag$ and $WISE4<6.5~mag$, while the rest of the targets show much smaller MIR variability. The MIR variability is also correlated with the MLR for which targets with larger variability also show larger MLR with an approximate upper limit of $-6.1~M_\odot/yr^{-1}$. Both the variability and the luminosity may be important for the MLR since the WISE4-band flux is increasing exponentially along with the degeneracy of luminosity and variability. The identified RSG sample has been compared with the theoretical evolutionary models and shown that the discrepancy between observation and evolutionary models can be mitigated by considering both variability and extinction.

An extremely low mid-infrared extinction law toward the Galactic Center and 4% distance precision to 55 classical Cepheids

Distances and extinction values are usually degenerate. To refine the distance to the general Galactic Center region, a carefully determined extinction law (taking into account the prevailing systematic errors) is urgently needed. We collected data for 55 classical Cepheids projected toward the Galactic Center region to derive the near- to mid-infrared extinction law using three different approaches. The relative extinction values obtained are AJ/AKs = 3.005, AH/AKs = 1.717, A[3.6]/AKs = 0.478, A[4.5]/AKs = 0.341, A[5.8]/AKs = 0.234, A[8.0]/AKs = 0.321, AW1/AKs = 0.506, and AW2/AKs = 0.340. We also calculated the corresponding systematic errors. Compared with previous work, we report an extremely low and steep mid-infrared extinction law. Using a seven-passband 'optimal distance' method, we improve the mean distance precision to our sample of 55 Cepheids to 4%. Based on four confirmed Galactic Center Cepheids, a solar Galactocentric distance of R_0 = 8.10\pm0.19\pm0.22 kpc is determined, featuring an uncertainty that is close to the limiting distance accuracy (2.8%) for Galactic Center Cepheids.

Optical-Mid-Infrared Period-Luminosity Relations for W UMa-type Contact Binaries Based on Gaia DR 1: 8% Distance Accuracy

W Ursa Majoris (W UMa)-type contact binary systems (CBs) are useful statistical distance indicators because of their large numbers. Here, we establish (orbital) period-luminosity relations (PLRs) in 12 optical-to-mid-infrared bands (GBV RIJHKsW1W2W3W4) based on 183 nearby W UMa-type CBs with accurate Tycho-Gaia parallaxes. The 1σ dispersion of the PLRs decreases from optical to near- and mid-infrared wavelengths. The minimum scatter, 0.16 mag, implies that W UMa-type CBs can be used to recover distances to 7% precision. Applying our newly determined PLRs to 19 open clusters containing W UMa-type CBs demonstrates that the PLR and open cluster CB distance scales are mutually consistent to within 1%. Adopting our PLRs as secondary distance indicators, we compiled a catalog of 55,603 CBs candidates, of which 80% have distance estimates based on a combination of optical, near-, and mid-infrared photometry. Using Fourier decomposition, 27,318 high-probability W UMa-type CBs were selected. The resulting 8% distance accuracy implies that our sam- ple encompasses the largest number of objects with accurate distances within a local volume with a radius of 3 kpc available to date. The distribution of W UMa-type CBs in the Galaxy suggests that in different environments, the CB luminosity function may be different: larger numbers of brighter (longer-period) W UMa-type CBs are found in younger environments.

Differentially Private Generative Adversarial Network

Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) and its variants have recently attracted intensive research interests due to their elegant theoretical foundation and excellent empirical performance as generative models. These tools provide a promising direction in the studies where data availability is limited. One common issue in GANs is that the density of the learned generative distribution could concentrate on the training data points, meaning that they can easily remember training samples due to the high model complexity of deep networks. This becomes a major concern when GANs are applied to private or sensitive data such as patient medical records, and the concentration of distribution may divulge critical patient information. To address this issue, in this paper we propose a differentially private GAN (DPGAN) model, in which we achieve differential privacy in GANs by adding carefully designed noise to gradients during the learning procedure. We provide rigorous proof for the privacy guarantee, as well as comprehensive empirical evidence to support our analysis, where we demonstrate that our method can generate high quality data points at a reasonable privacy level.
