Probing the longitudinal spin transfer via dihadron polarization correlations in unpolarized $e^+e^-$ and $pp$ collisions

The longitudinal spin transfer represents the probability density of producing longitudinally polarized hadrons from longitudinally polarized quarks or circularly polarized gluons. It thus was usually measured in polarized reactions or high-energy collisions where weak interaction dominates. In this work, we propose the dihadron polarization correlation as a novel probe of this quantity. Such an observable does not require the fragmenting partons to be polarized and therefore can be measured in the currently available experimental facilities, such as Belle, RHIC, Tevatron, and the LHC. We make quantitative predictions for these experiments. In light of the data already harvested, the experimental investigation of this observable provides more opportunity for the quantitative study of the longitudinal spin transfer. In particular, the measurements in pp collisions can significantly constrain the fragmentation function of a circularly polarized gluon.

Forward Inclusive Jet Productions in pA Collisions

Motivated by recent experimental LHC measurements on the forward inclusive jet productions and based on our previous calculations on forward hadron productions, we calculate single inclusive jet cross-section in $pA$ collisions at forward rapidity within the color glass condensate framework up to the next-to-leading-order. Moreover, with the application of jet algorithm and proper subtraction of the rapidity and collinear divergences, we further demonstrate that the resulting next-to-leading-order hard coefficients are finite. In addition, in order to deal with the large logarithms that can potentially spoil the convergence of the perturbative expansion and improve the reliability of the numerical predictions, we introduce the collinear jet function and the threshold jet function and resum these large logarithms hidden in the hard coefficients.

A parton shower generator based on the GLR equation

We develop a novel Monte Carlo parton branching algorithm based on the Gribov-Levin-Ryskin (GLR) equation. The formulations of both forward evolution and backward evolution for the GLR equation are presented. The results from the Monte Carlo implementation of the GLR equation are in full agreement with its numerical solutions. Our work thus paves the way for developing an event generator that embodies the saturation effect.

Pursuing the Precision Study for Color Glass Condensate in Forward Hadron Productions

With the tremendous accomplishments of RHIC and the LHC experiments and the advent of the future Electron-Ion Collider on the horizon, the quest for compelling evidence of the color glass condensate (CGC) has become one of the most aspiring goals in the high energy Quantum Chromodynamics research. Pursuing this question requires developing the precision test of the CGC formalism. By systematically implementing the threshold resummation, we significantly improve the stability of the next-to-leading-order calculation in CGC for forward rapidity hadron productions in $pp$ and $pA$ collisions, especially in the high $p_T$ region, and obtain reliable descriptions of all existing data measured at RHIC and the LHC across all $p_T$ regions. Consequently, this technique can pave the way for the precision studies of the CGC next-to-leading-order predictions by confronting them with a large amount of precise data.

Exploring the Collective Phenomenon at the Electron-Ion Collider

Based on rare fluctuations in strong interactions, we argue that there is a strong physical resemblance between the high multiplicity events in photo-nuclear collisions and those in $pA$ collisions, in which interesting long range collective phenomena are discovered. This indicates that the collectivity can also be studied in certain kinematic region of the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) where the incoming virtual photon has a sufficiently long lifetime. Using a model in the Color Glass Condensate formalism, we first show that the initial state interactions can explain the recent ATLAS azimuthal correlation results measured in the photo-nuclear collisions, and then we provide quantitative predictions for the long range correlations in $eA$ collisions in the EIC regime. With the unprecedented precision and the ability to change the size of the collisional system, the high luminosity EIC will open a new window to explore the physical mechanism responsible for the collective phenomenon.

The Collectivity of Heavy Mesons in Proton-Nucleus Collisions

Using a model based on the Color Glass Condensate framework and the dilute-dense factorization, we systematically study the azimuthal angular correlations between a heavy flavor meson and a light reference particle in proton-nucleus collisions. The obtained second harmonic coefficients (also known as the elliptic flows) for $J/ψ$ and $D^0$ agree with recent experimental data from the LHC. We also provide predictions for the elliptic flows of $Υ$ and $B$ meson, which can be measured in the near future at the LHC. This work can shed light on the physics origin of the collectivity phenomenon in the collisions of small systems.

Probing parton saturation with forward $Z^0$-boson production at small transverse momentum in p+p and p+A collisions

We calculate and compare the differential cross sections for forward $Z^0$-boson production at small transverse momentum, in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions, using both the collinear and dilute-dense factorization frameworks. In both cases, we implement a Sudakov resummation of the large logarithms generated by soft-gluon emissions, which is essential in order to describe the transverse momentum distribution of forward $Z^0$ bosons measured at the Tevatron and the LHC. We further compute the nuclear modification factor in the dilute-dense framework, hoping to single out signals of saturation effects at small values of $x$. Our predictions are compared with those obtained in the collinear factorization framework, using two different nuclear parton distribution functions.

Probing Jet Medium Interactions via $Z$($H$)+jet Momentum Imbalances

Different types of high energy hard probes are used to extract the jet transport properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma created in heavy-ion collisions, of which the heavy boson tagged jets are undoubtedly the most sophisticated due to its clean decay signature and production mechanism. In this study, we used the resummation improved pQCD approach with high order correction in the hard factor to calculate the momentum ratio $x_J$ distributions of $Z$ and Higgs($H$) tagged jets. We found that the formalism can provide a good description of the 5.02 TeV $pp$ data. Using the BDMPS energy loss formalism, along with the OSU 2+1D hydro to simulate the effect of the medium, we extracted the value of the jet transport coefficient to be around $\hat{q}_0=4\sim8~GeV^2/fm$ by comparing with the $Z$+jet $PbPb$ experimental data. The $H$+jet $x_J$ distribution were calculated in a similar manner in contrast and found to have a stronger Sudakov effect as compared with the $Z$+jet distribution. This study uses a clean color-neutral boson as trigger to study the jet quenching effect and serves as a complimentary method in the extraction of the QGP's transport coefficient in high energy nuclear collisions.

Medium-Induced Transverse Momentum Broadening via Forward Dijet Correlations

Dijet azimuthal angle correlation is arguably one of the most direct probes of the medium-induced broadening effects. The evidence for such broadening, however, is not yet clearly observed within the precision of current mid-rapidity measurements at RHIC and the LHC. We show that the dijet correlation in forward rapidity from the future LHC RUN3, aided by forward detector upgrades, can reveal this broadening thanks to the steeper jet spectra, suppressed vacuum radiations and lower underlying event background, with a sensitivity comparable to that of the future high-luminosity Au+Au run at RHIC. Dijet correlation measurements at the two facilities together can provide powerful constraints on the temperature dependence of medium transport properties.

On the elliptic flow of heavy quarkonia in $pA$ collisions

Using the dilute-dense factorization in the Color Glass Condensate framework, we investigate the azimuthal angular correlation between a heavy quarkonium and a charged light hadron in proton-nucleus collisions. We extract the second harmonic $v_2$, commonly known as the elliptic flow, with the light hadron as the reference. This particular azimuthal angular correlation between a heavy meson and a light hadron has first been measured at the LHC recently. The experimental results indicate that the elliptic flows for heavy-flavor mesons ($J/ψ$ and $D^0$) are almost as large as those for light hadrons. Our calculation demonstrates that this result can be naturally interpreted as an initial state effect due to the interaction between the incoming partons from the proton and the dense gluons inside the target nucleus. Since the heavy quarkonium $v_2$ exhibits a weak mass dependence according to our calculation, we predict that the heavy quarkonium $Υ$ should have a similar elliptic flow as compared to that of the $J/ψ$, which can be tested in future measurements.

Extracting jet transport coefficient via single hadron and dihadron productions in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

We study the suppressions of high transverse momentum single hadron and dihadron productions in high-energy heavy-ion collisions based on the framework of a next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD parton model combined with the higher-twist energy loss formalism. Our model can provide a consistant description for the nuclear modification factors of single hadron and dihadron productions in central and non-central nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and the LHC energies. We quantitatively extract the value of jet quenching parameter $\hat q$ via a global $χ^2$ analysis, and obtain ${\hat{q}}/{T^3} = 4.1 \sim 4.4$ at $T = 378$~MeV at RHIC and ${\hat{q}}/{T^3} = 2.6 \sim 3.3$ at $T = 486$~MeV at the LHC, which are consistent with the results from JET Collaboration. We also provide the predictions for the nuclear modification factors of dihadron productions in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV and in Xe+Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 5.44 TeV.

On the Dihadron Angular Correlations in Forward $pA$ collisions

Dihadron angular correlations in forward $pA$ collisions have been considered as one of the most sensitive observables to the gluon saturation effects. In general, both parton shower effects and saturation effects are responsible for the back-to-back dihadron angular de-correlations. With the recent progress in the saturation formalism, we can incorporate the parton shower effect by adding the corresponding Sudakov factor in the saturation framework. In this paper, we carry out the first detailed numerical study in this regard, and find a very good agreement with previous RHIC $pp$ and $dAu$ data. This study can help us to establish a baseline in $pp$ collisions which contains little saturation effects, and further make predictions for dihadron angular correlations in $pAu$ collisions, which will allow to search for the signal of parton saturation.

Study of Isolated-photon and Jet Momentum Imbalance in $pp$ and $PbPb$ collisions

In this paper, we study the production of isolated-photon plus a jet in $pp$ and $PbPb$ collisions, which can be used as an important probe to the jet transport property in quark gluon plasma created in heavy ion collisions. Normally, there are two types of observables associated with the production of isolated-photon plus a jet, namely, the azimuthal angular correlation and the transverse momentum imbalance. To understand both observables in the full kinematical region, we need to employ the perturbative QCD calculation, which takes into account the hard splitting of partons, together with the Sudakov resummation formalism, which resums soft gluon splittings. Furthermore, by introducing energy-loss into the system, we calculate the enhancement of the momentum imbalance distribution for $AA$ as compared to $pp$ collisions and make predictions for future unfolded experimental data. In addition, in order to extract the jet transport coefficient more precisely in our numerical calculation, we also distinguish quark jets from gluon jets, since they interact with quark gluon plasma with different strengths. This work provides a reliable theoretical tool for the calculation of the gamma-jet correlation, which can lead us to a more precise extraction of the jet transport coefficient in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Effect of medium recoil and $p_T$ broadening on single inclusive jet suppression in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Jet energy loss and single inclusive jet suppression in high-energy heavy-ion collisions are studied within a pQCD parton model that includes both elastic and radiative interactions between jet shower and medium partons as they propagate through the quark-gluon plasma. The collisional energy loss of jets with a given cone-size is found to be relatively small comparing with the radiative energy loss. However the effect of transverse momentum broadening due to elastic scattering is significant in the calculation of radiative energy loss within the higher-twist formalism. The nuclear modification factors for single inclusive jets with different cone-sizes are calculated and compared to experimental data as measured by ALICE and ATLAS experiments in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV. Results on jet suppression in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV are also presented.

Probing Transverse Momentum Broadening via Dihadron and Hadron-jet Angular Correlations in Relativistic Heavy-ion Collisions

Dijet, dihadron, hadron-jet angular correlations have been reckoned as important probes of the transverse momentum broadening effects in relativistic nuclear collisions. When a pair of high-energy jets created in hard collisions traverse the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions, they become de-correlated due to the vacuum soft gluon radiation associated with the Sudakov logarithms and the medium-induced transverse momentum broadening. For the first time, we employ the systematical resummation formalism and establish a baseline calculation to describe the dihadron and hadron-jet angular correlation data in $pp$ and peripheral $AA$ collisions where the medium effect is negligible. We demonstrate that the medium-induced broadening $\langle p_\perp^2\rangle$ and the so-called jet quenching parameter $\hat q$ can be extracted from the angular de-correlations observed in $AA$ collisions. A global $χ^2$ analysis of dihadron and hadron-jet angular correlation data renders the best fit $\langle p_\perp^2 \rangle \sim 13~\textrm{GeV}^2$ for a quark jet at RHIC top energy. Further experimental and theoretical efforts along the direction of this work shall significantly advance the quantitative understanding of transverse momentum broadening and help us acquire unprecedented knowledge of jet quenching parameter in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Dijet Asymmetry in the Resummation Improved Perturbative QCD Approach

We develop the first systematic theoretical approach to dijet asymmetries in hadron-hadron collisions based on the perturbative QCD (pQCD) expansion and the Sudakov resummation formalism. We find that the pQCD calculation at next-to-leading order is indispensable to describe the experimental data, while the Sudakov resummation formalism is vital near the end points where the pQCD expansion fails to converge due to the appearance of large Sudakov logarithms. Utilizing our resummation improved pQCD approach, we obtain good agreement with the most up-to-date fully corrected ATLAS data on dijet asymmetry in $pp$ collisions. Combining with the BDMPS jet energy loss formalism, we extract the value of jet transport coefficient $\hat{q}_0 \sim 2$-$6~\textrm{GeV}^2/\textrm{fm}$ for the quark-gluon-plasma created in $PbPb$ collisions at 2.76A TeV. This work paves the way for a more complete and deeper understanding of the properties of strongly-coupled QCD medium via the studies of dijet asymmetries in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Leading and higher twist contributions in semi-inclusive e+e- annihilation at high energies

By applying the collinear expansion to the semi-inclusive hadron production process $e^++e^-\to h+\bar q(jet)+X$ at high energies, we construct a theoretical framework where the leading and higher twist contributions at the leading perturbative QCD can be calculated systematically. With this framework, we calculate the contributions up to twist-3 for spin-0, spin-1/2 and spin-1 hadrons respectively. We present the results for the hadronic tensors, the differential cross sections, the azimuthal asymmetries, and the polarizations of the hadrons.
