The Lithium Abundances from the Large Sky Area Multi-object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope Medium-resolution Survey. I. The Method

Standard stellar evolution model predicts a severe depletion of lithium (Li) abundance during the first dredge-up process (FDU). Yet a small fraction of giant stars are still found to preserve a considerable amount of Li in their atmospheres after FDU. Those giants are usually identified as Li-rich by a widely used criterion, A(Li) $ > 1.5$\,{\it dex}. A large number of works dedicated to search for and investigate this minority of the giant family, and the amount of Li-rich giants has been largely expanded, especially in the era of big data. In this paper, we present a catalog of Li-rich giants found from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey with Li abundances derived from a template matching method developed for LAMOST low-resolution spectra. The catalog contains $10,535$ Li-rich giants with Li abundances from $\sim 1.5$\,{\it dex} to $\sim 4.9$\,{\it dex}. We also confirm that the ratio of Li-rich phenomenon among giant stars is about one percent, or for a more expression, $1.29\%$ from our statistically important sample. This is the largest Li-rich giant sample ever reported to date, which significantly exceeds amount of all the reported Li-rich giants combined. The catalog will help the community to better understand the Li-rich phenomenon in giant stars.

Fast Camera Image Denoising on Mobile GPUs with Deep Learning, Mobile AI 2021 Challenge: Report

Image denoising is one of the most critical problems in mobile photo processing. While many solutions have been proposed for this task, they are usually working with synthetic data and are too computationally expensive to run on mobile devices. To address this problem, we introduce the first Mobile AI challenge, where the target is to develop an end-to-end deep learning-based image denoising solution that can demonstrate high efficiency on smartphone GPUs. For this, the participants were provided with a novel large-scale dataset consisting of noisy-clean image pairs captured in the wild. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the Samsung Exynos 2100 chipset with a powerful Mali GPU capable of accelerating floating-point and quantized neural networks. The proposed solutions are fully compatible with any mobile GPU and are capable of processing 480p resolution images under 40-80 ms while achieving high fidelity results. A detailed description of all models developed in the challenge is provided in this paper.

Re-rank Coarse Classification with Local Region Enhanced Features for Fine-Grained Image Recognition

Fine-grained image recognition is very challenging due to the difficulty of capturing both semantic global features and discriminative local features. Meanwhile, these two features are not easy to be integrated, which are even conflicting when used simultaneously. In this paper, a retrieval-based coarse-to-fine framework is proposed, where we re-rank the TopN classification results by using the local region enhanced embedding features to improve the Top1 accuracy (based on the observation that the correct category usually resides in TopN results). To obtain the discriminative regions for distinguishing the fine-grained images, we introduce a weakly-supervised method to train a box generating branch with only image-level labels. In addition, to learn more effective semantic global features, we design a multi-level loss over an automatically constructed hierarchical category structure. Experimental results show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on three benchmarks: CUB-200-2011, Stanford Cars, and FGVC Aircraft. Also, visualizations and analysis are provided for better understanding.

EPIHC: Improving Enhancer-Promoter Interaction Prediction by using Hybrid features and Communicative learning

Enhancer-promoter interactions (EPIs) regulate the expression of specific genes in cells, and EPIs are important for understanding gene regulation, cell differentiation and disease mechanisms. EPI identification through the wet experiments is costly and time-consuming, and computational methods are in demand. In this paper, we propose a deep neural network-based method EPIHC based on sequence-derived features and genomic features for the EPI prediction. EPIHC extracts features from enhancer and promoter sequences respectively using convolutional neural networks (CNN), and then design a communicative learning module to captures the communicative information between enhancer and promoter sequences. EPIHC also take the genomic features of enhancers and promoters into account. At last, EPIHC combines sequence-derived features and genomic features to predict EPIs. The computational experiments show that EPIHC outperforms the existing state-of-the-art EPI prediction methods on the benchmark datasets and chromosome-split datasets, and the study reveal that the communicative learning module can bring explicit information about EPIs, which is ignore by CNN. Moreover, we consider two strategies to improve performances of EPIHC in the cross-cell line prediction, and experimental results show that EPIHC constructed on training cell lines exhibit improved performances for the other cell lines.

Soft Q Network

Deep Q Network (DQN) is a very successful algorithm, yet the inherent problem of reinforcement learning, i.e. the exploit-explore balance, remains. In this work, we introduce entropy regularization into DQN and propose SQN. We find that the backup equation of soft Q learning can enjoy the corrective feedback if we view the soft backup as policy improvement in the form of Q, instead of policy evaluation. We show that Soft Q Learning with Corrective Feedback (SQL-CF) underlies the on-plicy nature of SQL and the equivalence of SQL and Soft Policy Gradient (SPG). With these insights, we propose an on-policy version of deep Q learning algorithm, i.e. Q On-Policy (QOP). We experiment with QOP on a self-play environment called Google Research Football (GRF). The QOP algorithm exhibits great stability and efficiency in training GRF agents.

Reinforcement learning with world model

Nowadays, model-free reinforcement learning algorithms have achieved remarkable performance on many decision making and control tasks, but high sample complexity and low sample efficiency still hinder the wide use of model-free reinforcement learning algorithms. In this paper, we argue that if we intend to design an intelligent agent that learns fast and transfers well, the agent must be able to reflect key elements of intelligence, like intuition, Memory, PredictionandCuriosity. We propose an agent framework that integrates off-policy reinforcement learning with world model learning, so as to embody the important features of intelligence in our algorithm design. We adopt the state-of-art model-free reinforcement learning algorithm, Soft Actor-Critic, as the agent intuition, and world model learning through RNN to endow the agent with memory, curiosity, and the ability to predict. We show that these ideas can work collaboratively with each other and our agent (RMC) can give new state-of-art results while maintaining sample efficiency and training stability. Moreover, our agent framework can be easily extended from MDP to POMDP problems without performance loss.

Policy Optimization Reinforcement Learning with Entropy Regularization

Entropy regularization is an important idea in reinforcement learning, with great success in recent algorithms like Soft Q Network (SQN) and Soft Actor-Critic (SAC1). In this work, we extend this idea into the on-policy realm. We propose the soft policy gradient theorem (SPGT) for on-policy maximum entropy reinforcement learning. With SPGT, a series of new policy optimization algorithms are derived, such as SPG, SA2C, SA3C, SDDPG, STRPO, SPPO, SIMPALA and so on. We find that SDDPG is equivalent to SAC1. For policy gradient, the policy network is often represented as a Gaussian distribution with a global action variance, which damages the representation capacity. We introduce a local action variance for policy network and find it can work collaboratively with the idea of entropy regularization. Our method outperforms prior works on a range of benchmark tasks. Furthermore, our method can be easily extended to large scale experiment with great stability and parallelism.

Observation of topological electronic structure in quasi-1D superconductor TaSe3

Topological superconductors (TSCs), with the capability to host Majorana bound states that can lead to non-Abelian statistics and application in quantum computation, have been one of the most intensively studied topics in condensed matter physics recently. Up to date, only a few compounds have been proposed as candidates of intrinsic TSCs, such as doped topological insulator CuxBi2Se3 and iron-based superconductor FeTe0.55Se0.45. Here, by carrying out synchrotron and laser based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we systematically investigated the electronic structure of a quasi-1D superconductor TaSe3, and identified the nontrivial topological surface states. In addition, our scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) study revealed a clean cleaved surface with a persistent superconducting gap, proving it suitable for further investigation of potential Majorana modes. These results prove TaSe3 as a stoichiometric TSC candidate that is stable and exfoliable, therefore a great platform for the study of rich novel phenomena and application potentials.

Vacuum Driven Auxetic Switching Structure and Its Application on a Gripper and Quadruped

The properties and applications of auxetics have been widely explored in the past years. Through proper utilization of auxetic structures, designs with unprecedented mechanical and structural behaviors can be produced. Taking advantage of this, we present the development of novel and lowcost 3D structures inspired by a simple auxetic unit. The core part, which we call the body in this paper, is a 3D realization of 2D rotating squares. This body structure was formed by joining four similar structures through softer material at the vertices. A monolithic structure of this kind is accomplished through a custom-built multi-material 3D printer. The model works in a way that, when torque is applied along the face of the rotational squares, they tend to bend at the vertex of the softer material, and due to the connected-ness of the design, a proper opening and closing motion is achieved. To demonstrate the potential of this part as an important component for robots, two applications are presented: a soft gripper and a crawling robot. Vacuum-driven actuators move both the applications. The proposed gripper combines the benefits of two types of grippers whose fingers are placed parallel and equally spaced to each other, in a single design. This gripper is adaptable to the size of the object and can grasp objects with large and small cross-sections alike. A novel bending actuator, which is made of soft material and bends in curvature when vacuumed, provides the grasping nature of the gripper. Crawling robots, in addition to their versatile nature, provide a better interaction with humans. The designed crawling robot employs negative pressure-driven actuators to highlight linear and turning locomotion.

The TianQin project: current progress on science and technology

TianQin is a planned space-based gravitational wave (GW) observatory consisting of three earth orbiting satellites with an orbital radius of about $10^5~{\rm km}$. The satellites will form a equilateral triangle constellation the plane of which is nearly perpendicular to the ecliptic plane. TianQin aims to detect GWs between $10^{-4}~{\rm Hz}$ and $1~{\rm Hz}$ that can be generated by a wide variety of important astrophysical and cosmological sources, including the inspiral of Galactic ultra-compact binaries, the inspiral of stellar-mass black hole binaries, extreme mass ratio inspirals, the merger of massive black hole binaries, and possibly the energetic processes in the very early universe or exotic sources such as cosmic strings. In order to start science operations around 2035, a roadmap called the 0123 plan is being used to bring the key technologies of TianQin to maturity, supported by the construction of a series of research facilities on the ground. Two major projects of the 0123 plan are being carried out. In this process, the team has created a new generation $17~{\rm cm}$ single-body hollow corner-cube retro-reflector which has been launched with the QueQiao satellite on 21 May 2018; a new laser ranging station equipped with a $1.2~{\rm m}$ telescope has been constructed and the station has successfully ranged to all the five retro-reflectors on the Moon; and the TianQin-1 experimental satellite has been launched on 20 December 2019 and the first round result shows that the satellite has exceeded all of its mission requirements.

Electronic Origin for the Enhanced Thermoelectric Efficiency of Cu2Se

Thermoelectric materials (TMs) can uniquely convert waste heat into electricity, which provides a potential solution for the global energy crisis that is increasingly severe. Bulk Cu2Se, with ionic conductivity of Cu ions, exhibits a significant enhancement of its thermoelectric figure of merit zT by a factor of ~3 near its structural transition around 400 K. Here, we show a systematic study of the electronic structure of Cu2Se and its temperature evolution using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Upon heating across the structural transition, the electronic states near the corner of the Brillouin zone gradually disappear, while the bands near the centre of Brillouin zone shift abruptly towards high binding energies and develop an energy gap. Interestingly, the observed band reconstruction well reproduces the temperature evolution of the Seebeck coefficient of Cu2Se, providing an electronic origin for the drastic enhancement of the thermoelectric performance near 400 K. The current results not only bridge among structural phase transition, electronic structures, and thermoelectric properties in a condensed matter system, but also provide valuable insights into the search and design of new generation of thermoelectric materials.

Science with the TianQin observatory: Preliminary results on stellar-mass binary black holes

We study the prospect of using TianQin to detect stellar-mass binary black holes (SBBHs). We estimate the expected detection number as well as the precision of parameter estimation on SBBH inspirals, using five different population models. We note TianQin can possibly detect a few SBBH inspirals with signal to noise ratios greater than 12; lowering the threshold and combining multiple detectors can both boost the detection number. The source parameters can be recovered with good precision for most events above the detection threshold. For example, the precision of the merger time most likely occurs near 1s, making it possible to guide the detection of the ground-based detectors, the precision of the eccentricity $e_0$ most likely occurs near $10^{-4}$, making it possible to distinguish the formation channels, and the precision of the mass parameter is better than $10^{-6}$ in general and most likely occurs near $10^{-7}$. We note, in particular, that for a typical merger event, the error volume is likely to be small enough to contain only the host galaxy, which could greatly help in the study of gravitational wave cosmology and relevant studies through the multimessenger observation.

NTIRE 2020 Challenge on Image Demoireing: Methods and Results

This paper reviews the Challenge on Image Demoireing that was part of the New Trends in Image Restoration and Enhancement (NTIRE) workshop, held in conjunction with CVPR 2020. Demoireing is a difficult task of removing moire patterns from an image to reveal an underlying clean image. The challenge was divided into two tracks. Track 1 targeted the single image demoireing problem, which seeks to remove moire patterns from a single image. Track 2 focused on the burst demoireing problem, where a set of degraded moire images of the same scene were provided as input, with the goal of producing a single demoired image as output. The methods were ranked in terms of their fidelity, measured using the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) between the ground truth clean images and the restored images produced by the participants' methods. The tracks had 142 and 99 registered participants, respectively, with a total of 14 and 6 submissions in the final testing stage. The entries span the current state-of-the-art in image and burst image demoireing problems.

NTIRE 2020 Challenge on Real-World Image Super-Resolution: Methods and Results

This paper reviews the NTIRE 2020 challenge on real world super-resolution. It focuses on the participating methods and final results. The challenge addresses the real world setting, where paired true high and low-resolution images are unavailable. For training, only one set of source input images is therefore provided along with a set of unpaired high-quality target images. In Track 1: Image Processing artifacts, the aim is to super-resolve images with synthetically generated image processing artifacts. This allows for quantitative benchmarking of the approaches \wrt a ground-truth image. In Track 2: Smartphone Images, real low-quality smart phone images have to be super-resolved. In both tracks, the ultimate goal is to achieve the best perceptual quality, evaluated using a human study. This is the second challenge on the subject, following AIM 2019, targeting to advance the state-of-the-art in super-resolution. To measure the performance we use the benchmark protocol from AIM 2019. In total 22 teams competed in the final testing phase, demonstrating new and innovative solutions to the problem.

A Flexible Connector for Soft Modular Robots Based on Micropatterned Intersurface Jamming

Soft modular robots enable more flexibility and safer interaction with the changing environment than traditional robots. However, it has remained challenging to create deformable connectors that can be integrated into soft machines. In this work, we propose a flexible connector for soft modular robots based on micropatterned intersurface jamming. The connector is composed of micropatterned dry adhesives made by silicone rubber and a flexible main body with inflatable chambers for active engagement and disengagement. Through connection force tests, we evaluate the characteristics of the connector both in the linear direction and under rotational disruptions. The connector can stably support an average maximum load of 22 N (83 times the connector's body weight) linearly and 10.86 N under planar rotation. The proposed connector demonstrates the potential to create a robust connection between soft modular robots without raising the system's overall stiffness; thus guarantees high flexibility of the robotic system.

ItLnc-BXE: a Bagging-XGBoost-ensemble method with multiple features for identification of plant lncRNAs

Motivation: Since long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have involved in a wide range of functions in cellular and developmental processes, an increasing number of methods have been proposed for distinguishing lncRNAs from coding RNAs. However, most of the existing methods are designed for lncRNAs in animal systems, and only a few methods focus on the plant lncRNA identification. Different from lncRNAs in animal systems, plant lncRNAs have distinct characteristics. It is desirable to develop a computational method for accurate and robust identification of plant lncRNAs. Results: Herein, we present a plant lncRNA identification method ItLnc-BXE, which utilizes multiple features and the ensemble learning strategy. First, a diversity of lncRNA features is collected and filtered by feature selection to represent RNA transcripts. Then, several base learners are trained and further combined into a single meta-learner by ensemble learning, and thus an ItLnc-BXE model is constructed. ItLnc-BXE models are evaluated on datasets of six plant species, the results show that ItLnc-BXE outperforms other state-of-the-art plant lncRNA identification methods, achieving better and robust performances (AUC>95.91%). We also perform some experiments about cross-species lncRNA identification, and the results indicate that dicots-based and monocots-based models can be used to accurately identify lncRNAs in lower plant species, such as mosses and algae.
