Robust Power Allocation for UAV-aided ISAC Systems with Uncertain Location Sensing Errors

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) holds immense potential in integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems for the Internet of Things (IoT). In this paper, we propose a UAV-aided ISAC framework and investigate three robust power allocation schemes. First, we derive an explicit expression of the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) based on time-of-arrival (ToA) estimation, which serves as the performance metric for location sensing. Then, we analyze the impact of the location sensing error (LSE) on communications, revealing the inherent coupling relationship between communication and sensing. Moreover, we formulate three robust communication and sensing power allocation problems by respectively characterizing the LSE as an ellipsoidal distributed model, a Gaussian distributed model, and an arbitrary distributed model. Notably, the optimization problems seek to minimize the CRB, subject to data rate and total power constraints. However, these problems are non-convex and intractable. To address the challenges related to the three aforementioned LSE models, we respectively propose to use the ${\cal{S}}$-Procedure and alternating optimization (${\cal{S}}$-AO) method, Bernstein-type inequality and successive convex approximation (BI-SCA) method, and conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) and AO (CVaR-AO) method to solve these problems. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the robustness of our proposed UAV-aided ISAC system against the LSE by comparing with the non-robust design, and evaluate the trade-off between communication and sensing in the ISAC system.

Joint Beamforming Design for RIS-enabled Integrated Positioning and Communication in Millimeter Wave Systems

Integrated positioning and communication (IPAC) system and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) are both considered to be key technologies for future wireless networks. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a RIS-enabled IPAC scheme with the millimeter wave system. First, we derive the explicit expressions of the time-of-arrival (ToA)-based Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) and positioning error bound (PEB) for the RIS-aided system as the positioning metrics. Then, we formulate the IPAC system by jointly optimizing active beamforming in the base station (BS) and passive beamforming in the RIS to minimize the transmit power, while satisfying the communication data rate and PEB constraints. Finally, we propose an efficient two-stage algorithm to solve the optimization problem based on a series of methods such as the exhaustive search and semidefinite relaxation (SDR). Simulation results show that by changing various critical system parameters, the proposed RIS-enabled IPAC system can cater to both reliable data rates and high-precision positioning in different transmission environments.

Coded Computing for Half-Duplex Wireless Distributed Computing Systems via Interference Alignment

Distributed computing frameworks such as MapReduce and Spark are often used to process large-scale data computing jobs. In wireless scenarios, exchanging data among distributed nodes would seriously suffer from the communication bottleneck due to limited communication resources such as bandwidth and power. To address this problem, we propose a coded parallel computing (CPC) scheme for distributed computing systems where distributed nodes exchange information over a half-duplex wireless interference network. The CPC scheme achieves the multicast gain by utilizing coded computing to multicast coded symbols {intended to} multiple receiver nodes and the cooperative transmission gain by allowing multiple {transmitter} nodes to jointly deliver messages via interference alignment. To measure communication performance, we apply the widely used latency-oriented metric: \emph{normalized delivery time (NDT)}. It is shown that CPC can significantly reduce the NDT by jointly exploiting the parallel transmission and coded multicasting opportunities. Surprisingly, when $K$ tends to infinity and the computation load is fixed, CPC approaches zero NDT while all state-of-the-art schemes achieve positive values of NDT. Finally, we establish an information-theoretic lower bound for the NDT-computation load trade-off over \emph{half-duplex} network, and prove our scheme achieves the minimum NDT within a multiplicative gap of $3$, i.e., our scheme is order optimal.

Robust Power Allocation for Integrated Visible Light Positioning and Communication Networks

Integrated visible light positioning and communication (VLPC), capable of combining advantages of visible light communications (VLC) and visible light positioning (VLP), is a promising key technology for the future Internet of Things. In VLPC networks, positioning and communications are inherently coupled, which has not been sufficiently explored in the literature. We propose a robust power allocation scheme for integrated VLPC Networks by exploiting the intrinsic relationship between positioning and communications. Specifically, we derive explicit relationships between random positioning errors, following both a Gaussian distribution and an arbitrary distribution, and channel state information errors. Then, we minimize the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of positioning errors, subject to the rate outage constraint and the power constraints, which is a chance-constrained optimization problem and generally computationally intractable. To circumvent the nonconvex challenge, we conservatively transform the chance constraints to deterministic forms by using the Bernstein-type inequality and the conditional value-at-risk for the Gaussian and arbitrary distributed positioning errors, respectively, and then approximate them as convex semidefinite programs. Finally, simulation results verify the robustness and effectiveness of our proposed integrated VLPC design schemes.

Robust Information Bottleneck for Task-Oriented Communication with Digital Modulation

Task-oriented communications, mostly using learning-based joint source-channel coding (JSCC), aim to design a communication-efficient edge inference system by transmitting task-relevant information to the receiver. However, only transmitting task-relevant information without introducing any redundancy may cause robustness issues in learning due to the channel variations, and the JSCC which directly maps the source data into continuous channel input symbols poses compatibility issues on existing digital communication systems. In this paper, we address these two issues by first investigating the inherent tradeoff between the informativeness of the encoded representations and the robustness to information distortion in the received representations, and then propose a task-oriented communication scheme with digital modulation, named discrete task-oriented JSCC (DT-JSCC), where the transmitter encodes the features into a discrete representation and transmits it to the receiver with the digital modulation scheme. In the DT-JSCC scheme, we develop a robust encoding framework, named robust information bottleneck (RIB), to improve the communication robustness to the channel variations, and derive a tractable variational upper bound of the RIB objective function using the variational approximation to overcome the computational intractability of mutual information. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DT-JSCC achieves better inference performance than the baseline methods with low communication latency, and exhibits robustness to channel variations due to the applied RIB framework.

Mathematical Characterization of Signal Semantics and Rethinking of the Mathematical Theory of Information

Shannon information theory is established based on probability and bits, and the communication technology based on this theory realizes the information age. The original goal of Shannon's information theory is to describe and transmit information content. However, due to information is related to cognition, and cognition is considered to be subjective, Shannon information theory is to describe and transmit information-bearing signals. With the development of the information age to the intelligent age, the traditional signal-oriented processing needs to be upgraded to content-oriented processing. For example, chat generative pre-trained transformer (ChatGPT) has initially realized the content processing capability based on massive data. For many years, researchers have been searching for the answer to what the information content in the signal is, because only when the information content is mathematically and accurately described can information-based machines be truly intelligent. This paper starts from rethinking the essence of the basic concepts of the information, such as semantics, meaning, information and knowledge, presents the mathematical characterization of the information content, investigate the relationship between them, studies the transformation from Shannon's signal information theory to semantic information theory, and therefore proposes a content-oriented semantic communication framework. Furthermore, we propose semantic decomposition and composition scheme to achieve conversion between complex and simple semantics. Finally, we verify the proposed characterization of information-related concepts by implementing evolvable knowledge-based semantic recognition.

Mean-Semivariance Policy Optimization via Risk-Averse Reinforcement Learning

Keeping risk under control is often more crucial than maximizing expected rewards in real-world decision-making situations, such as finance, robotics, autonomous driving, etc. The most natural choice of risk measures is variance, which penalizes the upside volatility as much as the downside part. Instead, the (downside) semivariance, which captures the negative deviation of a random variable under its mean, is more suitable for risk-averse proposes. This paper aims at optimizing the mean-semivariance (MSV) criterion in reinforcement learning w.r.t. steady reward distribution. Since semivariance is time-inconsistent and does not satisfy the standard Bellman equation, the traditional dynamic programming methods are inapplicable to MSV problems directly. To tackle this challenge, we resort to Perturbation Analysis (PA) theory and establish the performance difference formula for MSV. We reveal that the MSV problem can be solved by iteratively solving a sequence of RL problems with a policy-dependent reward function. Further, we propose two on-policy algorithms based on the policy gradient theory and the trust region method. Finally, we conduct diverse experiments from simple bandit problems to continuous control tasks in MuJoCo, which demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed methods.

Features Disentangled Semantic Broadcast Communication Networks

Single-user semantic communications have attracted extensive research recently, but multi-user semantic broadcast communication (BC) is still in its infancy. In this paper, we propose a practical robust features-disentangled multi-user semantic BC framework, where the transmitter includes a feature selection module and each user has a feature completion module. Instead of broadcasting all extracted features, the semantic encoder extracts the disentangled semantic features, and then only the users' intended semantic features are selected for broadcasting, which can further improve the transmission efficiency. Within this framework, we further investigate two information-theoretic metrics, including the ultimate compression rate under both the distortion and perception constraints, and the achievable rate region of the semantic BC. Furthermore, to realize the proposed semantic BC framework, we design a lightweight robust semantic BC network by exploiting a supervised autoencoder (AE), which can controllably disentangle sematic features. Moreover, we design the first hardware proof-of-concept prototype of the semantic BC network, where the proposed semantic BC network can be implemented in real time. Simulations and experiments demonstrate that the proposed robust semantic BC network can significantly improve transmission efficiency.

Task-oriented Explainable Semantic Communications

Semantic communications utilize the transceiver computing resources to alleviate scarce transmission resources, such as bandwidth and energy. Although the conventional deep learning (DL) based designs may achieve certain transmission efficiency, the uninterpretability issue of extracted features is the major challenge in the development of semantic communications. In this paper, we propose an explainable and robust semantic communication framework by incorporating the well-established bit-level communication system, which not only extracts and disentangles features into independent and semantically interpretable features, but also only selects task-relevant features for transmission, instead of all extracted features. Based on this framework, we derive the optimal input for rate-distortion-perception theory, and derive both lower and upper bounds on the semantic channel capacity. Furthermore, based on the $β$-variational autoencoder ($β$-VAE), we propose a practical explainable semantic communication system design, which simultaneously achieves semantic features selection and is robust against semantic channel noise. We further design a real-time wireless mobile semantic communication proof-of-concept prototype. Our simulations and experiments demonstrate that our proposed explainable semantic communications system can significantly improve transmission efficiency, and also verify the effectiveness of our proposed robust semantic transmission scheme.

Global Algorithms for Mean-Variance Optimization in Markov Decision Processes

Dynamic optimization of mean and variance in Markov decision processes (MDPs) is a long-standing challenge caused by the failure of dynamic programming. In this paper, we propose a new approach to find the globally optimal policy for combined metrics of steady-state mean and variance in an infinite-horizon undiscounted MDP. By introducing the concepts of pseudo mean and pseudo variance, we convert the original problem to a bilevel MDP problem, where the inner one is a standard MDP optimizing pseudo mean-variance and the outer one is a single parameter selection problem optimizing pseudo mean. We use the sensitivity analysis of MDPs to derive the properties of this bilevel problem. By solving inner standard MDPs for pseudo mean-variance optimization, we can identify worse policy spaces dominated by optimal policies of the pseudo problems. We propose an optimization algorithm which can find the globally optimal policy by repeatedly removing worse policy spaces. The convergence and complexity of the algorithm are studied. Another policy dominance property is also proposed to further improve the algorithm efficiency. Numerical experiments demonstrate the performance and efficiency of our algorithms. To the best of our knowledge, our algorithm is the first that efficiently finds the globally optimal policy of mean-variance optimization in MDPs. These results are also valid for solely minimizing the variance metrics in MDPs.

Competent but Rigid: Identifying the Gap in Empowering AI to Participate Equally in Group Decision-Making

Existing research on human-AI collaborative decision-making focuses mainly on the interaction between AI and individual decision-makers. There is a limited understanding of how AI may perform in group decision-making. This paper presents a wizard-of-oz study in which two participants and an AI form a committee to rank three English essays. One novelty of our study is that we adopt a speculative design by endowing AI equal power to humans in group decision-making.We enable the AI to discuss and vote equally with other human members. We find that although the voice of AI is considered valuable, AI still plays a secondary role in the group because it cannot fully follow the dynamics of the discussion and make progressive contributions. Moreover, the divergent opinions of our participants regarding an "equal AI" shed light on the possible future of human-AI relations.

Who Should I Trust: AI or Myself? Leveraging Human and AI Correctness Likelihood to Promote Appropriate Trust in AI-Assisted Decision-Making

In AI-assisted decision-making, it is critical for human decision-makers to know when to trust AI and when to trust themselves. However, prior studies calibrated human trust only based on AI confidence indicating AI's correctness likelihood (CL) but ignored humans' CL, hindering optimal team decision-making. To mitigate this gap, we proposed to promote humans' appropriate trust based on the CL of both sides at a task-instance level. We first modeled humans' CL by approximating their decision-making models and computing their potential performance in similar instances. We demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of our model via two preliminary studies. Then, we proposed three CL exploitation strategies to calibrate users' trust explicitly/implicitly in the AI-assisted decision-making process. Results from a between-subjects experiment (N=293) showed that our CL exploitation strategies promoted more appropriate human trust in AI, compared with only using AI confidence. We further provided practical implications for more human-compatible AI-assisted decision-making.

Joint Beamforming and PD Orientation Design for Mobile Visible Light Communications

In this paper, we propose joint beamforming and photo-detector (PD) orientation (BO) optimization schemes for mobile visible light communication (VLC) with the orientation adjustable receiver (OAR). Since VLC is sensitive to line-of-sight propagation, we first establish the OAR model and the human body blockage model for mobile VLC user equipment (UE). To guarantee the quality of service (QoS) of mobile VLC, we jointly optimize BO with minimal UE the power consumption for both fixed and random UE orientation cases. For the fixed UE orientation case, since the {transmit} beamforming and the PD orientation are mutually coupled, the joint BO optimization problem is nonconvex and intractable. To address this challenge, we propose an alternating optimization algorithm to obtain the transmit beamforming and the PD orientation. For the random UE orientation case, we further propose a robust alternating BO optimization algorithm to ensure the worst-case QoS requirement of the mobile UE. Finally, the performance of joint BO optimization design schemes are evaluated for mobile VLC through numerical experiments.

Robust Beamforming Design for Rate Splitting Multiple Access-Aided MISO Visible Light Communications

In this paper, we focus on the optimal beamformer design for rate splitting multiple access (RSMA)-aided multipleinput single-output (MISO) visible light communication (VLC) networks. First, we derive the closed-form lower bounds of the achievable rate of each user, which are the first theoretical bound of achievable rate for RSMA-aided VLC networks. Second, we investigate the optimal beamformer design for RSMA-aided VLC networks to maximize the sum rate under the optical and electrical power constraints. In addition, we show that the proposed RSMA-aided networks can achieve superior performance compared with space-division multiple access (SDMA) and nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA).

Satellite-based continuous-variable quantum key distribution under the Earth's gravitational field

Long distance communication protocols cannot ignore the existence of the Earth's gravitational field and its effects on quantum states. In this work, we show a very general method to consider the effects of the Earth's gravitational field on continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocols. Our results show that the Earth's gravitational field erodes the ability of the two parties to perform QKD in all the protocols. However, our findings also exhibit some interesting features, i.e., the key rates initially increase for a specific range of height parameter $h\simeq r_A/2$ and then gradually decrease with the increasing of the orbits of satellite $h$. A possible explanation is also provided in our analysis, considering the fact that gravitational frequency shift and special relativistic effects play different roles in the key rates. In addition, our findings show that the change in key rate effected by gravitational frequency shift can be determined at a level of $<1.0\%$ within the satellite height at geostationary Earth orbits. Our work could provide some interesting possibilities to reduce the loss key rate through the control of the orbital height of satellites.

Self-supervised Learning for Heterogeneous Graph via Structure Information based on Metapath

graph neural networks (GNNs) are the dominant paradigm for modeling and handling graph structure data by learning universal node representation. The traditional way of training GNNs depends on a great many labeled data, which results in high requirements on cost and time. In some special scene, it is even unavailable and impracticable. Self-supervised representation learning, which can generate labels by graph structure data itself, is a potential approach to tackle this problem. And turning to research on self-supervised learning problem for heterogeneous graphs is more challenging than dealing with homogeneous graphs, also there are fewer studies about it. In this paper, we propose a SElfsupervised learning method for heterogeneous graph via Structure Information based on Metapath (SESIM). The proposed model can construct pretext tasks by predicting jump number between nodes in each metapath to improve the representation ability of primary task. In order to predict jump number, SESIM uses data itself to generate labels, avoiding time-consuming manual labeling. Moreover, predicting jump number in each metapath can effectively utilize graph structure information, which is the essential property between nodes. Therefore, SESIM deepens the understanding of models for graph structure. At last, we train primary task and pretext tasks jointly, and use meta-learning to balance the contribution of pretext tasks for primary task. Empirical results validate the performance of SESIM method and demonstrate that this method can improve the representation ability of traditional neural networks on link prediction task and node classification task.

Optimal Probabilistic Constellation Shaping for Covert Communications

In this paper, we investigate the optimal probabilistic constellation shaping design for covert communication systems from a practical view. Different from conventional covert communications with equiprobable constellations modulation, we propose nonequiprobable constellations modulation schemes to further enhance the covert rate. Specifically, we derive covert rate expressions for practical discrete constellation inputs for the first time. Then, we study the covert rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the constellation distribution and power allocation. In particular, an approximate gradient descent method is proposed for obtaining the optimal probabilistic constellation shaping. To strike a balance between the computational complexity and the transmission performance, we further develop a framework that maximizes a lower bound on the achievable rate where the optimal probabilistic constellation shaping problem can be solved efficiently using the Frank-Wolfe method. Extensive numerical results show that the optimized probabilistic constellation shaping strategies provide significant gains in the achievable covert rate over the state-of-the-art schemes.

Optimal Power Allocation for Integrated Visible Light Positioning and Communication System with a Single LED-Lamp

In this paper, we investigate an integrated visible light positioning and communication (VLPC) system with a single LED-lamp. First, by leveraging the fact that the VLC channel model is a function of the receiver's location, we propose a system model that estimates the channel state information (CSI) based on the positioning information without transmitting pilot sequences. Second, we derive the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) on the positioning error variance and a lower bound on the achievable rate with on-off keying modulation. Third, based on the derived performance metrics, we optimize the power allocation to minimize the CRLB, while satisfying the rate outage probability constraint. To tackle this non-convex optimization problem, we apply the worst-case distribution of the Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR) and the block coordinate descent (BCD) methods to obtain the feasible solutions. Finally, the effects of critical system parameters, such as outage probability, rate threshold, total power threshold, are revealed by numerical results.
