Secure Massive RIS aided Multicast with Uncertain CSI: Energy-Efficiency Maximization via Accelerated First-Order Algorithms

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has the potential to significantly enhance the network secure transmission performance by reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment. However, due to the passive nature of eavesdroppers and the cascaded channel brought by the RIS, the eavesdroppers' channel state information is imperfectly obtained at the base station. Under the channel uncertainty, the optimal phase-shift, power allocation, and transmission rate design for secure transmission is currently unknown due to the difficulty of handling the probabilistic constraint with coupled variables. To fill this gap, this paper formulates a problem of energy-efficient secure transmission design while incorporating the probabilistic constraint. By transforming the probabilistic constraint and decoupling the variables, the secure energy efficiency maximization problem can be solved via alternatively executing concave-convex procedure and semidefinite relaxation technique. To scale the solution to massive antennas and reflecting elements scenario, an accelerated first-order algorithm with low complexity is further proposed.Simulation results show that the proposed accelerated first-order algorithm achieves identical performance to the conventional method but saves at least two orders of magnitude in computation time. Moreover, the resultant RIS aided secure transmission significantly improves the energy efficiency compared to baseline schemes of random phase-shift, fixed phase-shift, and RIS ignoring CSI uncertainty.

Federated Meta Learning Enhanced Acoustic Radio Cooperative Framework for Ocean of Things Underwater Acoustic Communications

Sixth-generation wireless communication (6G) will be an integrated architecture of "space, air, ground and sea". One of the most difficult part of this architecture is the underwater information acquisition which need to transmitt information cross the interface between water and air.In this senario, ocean of things (OoT) will play an important role, because it can serve as a hub connecting Internet of things (IoT) and Internet of underwater things (IoUT). OoT device not only can collect data through underwater methods, but also can utilize radio frequence over the air. For underwater communications, underwater acoustic communications (UWA COMMs) is the most effective way for OoT devices to exchange information, but it is always tormented by doppler shift and synchronization errors. In this paper, in order to overcome UWA tough conditions, a deep neural networks based receiver for underwater acoustic chirp communication, called C-DNN, is proposed. Moreover, to improve the performance of DL-model and solve the problem of model generalization, we also proposed a novel federated meta learning (FML) enhanced acoustic radio cooperative (ARC) framework, dubbed ARC/FML, to do transfer. Particularly, tractable expressions are derived for the convergence rate of FML in a wireless setting, accounting for effects from both scheduling ratio, local epoch and the data amount on a single node. From our analysis and simulation results, it is shown that, the proposed C-DNN can provide a better BER performance and lower complexity than classical matched filter (MF) in underwater acoustic communications scenario. The ARC/FML framework has good convergence under a variety of channels than federated learning (FL). In summary, the proposed ARC/FML for OoT is a promising scheme for information exchange across water and air.

Voice activity detection in the wild: A data-driven approach using teacher-student training

Voice activity detection is an essential pre-processing component for speech-related tasks such as automatic speech recognition (ASR). Traditional supervised VAD systems obtain frame-level labels from an ASR pipeline by using, e.g., a Hidden Markov model. These ASR models are commonly trained on clean and fully transcribed data, limiting VAD systems to be trained on clean or synthetically noised datasets. Therefore, a major challenge for supervised VAD systems is their generalization towards noisy, real-world data. This work proposes a data-driven teacher-student approach for VAD, which utilizes vast and unconstrained audio data for training. Unlike previous approaches, only weak labels during teacher training are required, enabling the utilization of any real-world, potentially noisy dataset. Our approach firstly trains a teacher model on a source dataset (Audioset) using clip-level supervision. After training, the teacher provides frame-level guidance to a student model on an unlabeled, target dataset. A multitude of student models trained on mid- to large-sized datasets are investigated (Audioset, Voxceleb, NIST SRE). Our approach is then respectively evaluated on clean, artificially noised, and real-world data. We observe significant performance gains in artificially noised and real-world scenarios. Lastly, we compare our approach against other unsupervised and supervised VAD methods, demonstrating our method's superiority.

Quantum-enhanced SU(1,1) interferometry via a Fock state

In this paper, we derive a general expression of the quantum Fisher information of an SU(1,1) interferometer with an arbitrary state and a Fock state as inputs by the phase-averaging method. Our results show that the same quantum Fisher information can be obtained regardless of the specific form of the arbitrary state. Then, we analytically prove that the parity measurement can saturate the quantum Cramer-Rao bound when the estimated phase sits at the optimal working point. For practical reasons, we investigate the phase sensitivity when the arbitrary state is a coherent or thermal state. We further show that a Fock state can indeed enhance the phase sensitivity within a constraint on the total mean photon number inside the interferometer.

Wireless Sensing With Deep Spectrogram Network and Primitive Based Autoregressive Hybrid Channel Model

Human motion recognition (HMR) based on wireless sensing is a low-cost technique for scene understanding. Current HMR systems adopt support vector machines (SVMs) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to classify radar signals. However, whether a deeper learning model could improve the system performance is currently not known. On the other hand, training a machine learning model requires a large dataset, but data gathering from experiment is cost-expensive and time-consuming. Although wireless channel models can be adopted for dataset generation, current channel models are mostly designed for communication rather than sensing. To address the above problems, this paper proposes a deep spectrogram network (DSN) by leveraging the residual mapping technique to enhance the HMR performance. Furthermore, a primitive based autoregressive hybrid (PBAH) channel model is developed, which facilitates efficient training and testing dataset generation for HMR in a virtual environment. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed PBAH channel model matches the actual experimental data very well and the proposed DSN achieves significantly smaller recognition error than that of CNN.

SU(1,1) interferometry with parity measurement

We present a new operator method in the Heisenberg representation to obtain the signal of parity measurement within a lossless SU(1,1) interferometer. Based on this method, it is convenient to derive the parity signal directly in terms of input states, including general Gaussian or non-Gaussian state. As applications, we revisit the signal of parity measurement within an SU(1,1) interferometer when a coherent or thermal state and a squeezed vacuum state are considered as input states. In addition, we also obtain the parity signal of a Fock state when it passes through an SU(1,1) interferometer, which is also a new result. Therefore, the operator method proposed in this work may bring convenience to the study of quantum metrology, particularly the phase estimation based on an SU(1,1) interferometer.

Sequential Cross-Document Coreference Resolution

Relating entities and events in text is a key component of natural language understanding. Cross-document coreference resolution, in particular, is important for the growing interest in multi-document analysis tasks. In this work we propose a new model that extends the efficient sequential prediction paradigm for coreference resolution to cross-document settings and achieves competitive results for both entity and event coreference while provides strong evidence of the efficacy of both sequential models and higher-order inference in cross-document settings. Our model incrementally composes mentions into cluster representations and predicts links between a mention and the already constructed clusters, approximating a higher-order model. In addition, we conduct extensive ablation studies that provide new insights into the importance of various inputs and representation types in coreference.

Unit selection synthesis based data augmentation for fixed phrase speaker verification

Data augmentation is commonly used to help build a robust speaker verification system, especially in limited-resource case. However, conventional data augmentation methods usually focus on the diversity of acoustic environment, leaving the lexicon variation neglected. For text dependent speaker verification tasks, it's well-known that preparing training data with the target transcript is the most effectual approach to build a well-performing system, however collecting such data is time-consuming and expensive. In this work, we propose a unit selection synthesis based data augmentation method to leverage the abundant text-independent data resources. In this approach text-independent speeches of each speaker are firstly broke up to speech segments each contains one phone unit. Then segments that contain phonetics in the target transcript are selected to produce a speech with the target transcript by concatenating them in turn. Experiments are carried out on the AISHELL Speaker Verification Challenge 2019 database, the results and analysis shows that our proposed method can boost the system performance significantly.

On Secure Degrees of Freedom of the MIMO Interference Channel with Local Output Feedback

This paper studies the problem of sum-secure degrees of freedom (SDoF) of the (M,M,N,N) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel with local output feedback, so as to build an information-theoretic foundation and provide practical transmission schemes for 6G-enabled vehicles-to-vehicles (V2V). For this problem, we propose two novel transmission schemes, i.e., the interference decoding scheme and the interference alignment scheme, and thus establish a sum-SDoF lower bound. In particular, to optimize the phase duration, we analyze the security and decoding constraints and formulate a linear-fractional optimization problem. Furthermore, we show that the derived sum-SDoF lower bound is the sum-SDoF for M <= N/2, N=M, and 2N <= M antenna configurations, and reveal that for a fixed N, the optimal M to maximize the sum-SDoF is not less than 2N. Through simulations, we examine the secure sum-rate performance of proposed transmission schemes, and reveal that using local output feedback can lead to a higher secure sum-rate than that by using delayed channel state information at the transmitter.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted Edge Machine Learning

The ever-growing popularity and rapid improving of artificial intelligence (AI) have raised rethinking on the evolution of wireless networks. Mobile edge computing (MEC) provides a natural platform for AI applications since it provides rich computation resources to train AI models, as well as low-latency access to the data generated by mobile and Internet of Things devices. In this paper, we present an infrastructure to perform machine learning tasks at an MEC server with the assistance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). In contrast to conventional communication systems where the principal criteria are to maximize the throughput, we aim at optimizing the learning performance. Specifically, we minimize the maximum learning error of all users by jointly optimizing the beamforming vectors of the base station and the phase-shift matrix of the RIS. An alternating optimization-based framework is proposed to optimize the two terms iteratively, where closed-form expressions of the beamforming vectors are derived, and an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)-based algorithm is designed together with an error level searching framework to effectively solve the nonconvex optimization problem of the phase-shift matrix. Simulation results demonstrate significant gains of deploying an RIS and validate the advantages of our proposed algorithms over various benchmarks.

Space Shift Keying with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: Phase Configuration Designs and Performance Analysis

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted transmission and space shift keying (SSK) appear as promising candidates for future energy-efficient wireless systems. In this paper, two RIS-based SSK schemes are proposed to efficiently improve the error and throughput performance of conventional SSK systems, respectively. The first one, termed RIS-SSK with passive beamforming (RIS-SSK-PB), employs an RIS for beamforming and targets the maximization of the minimum squared Euclidean distance between any two decision points. The second one, termed RIS-SSK with Alamouti space-time block coding (RIS-SSK-ASTBC), employs an RIS for ASTBC and enables the RIS to transmit its own Alamouti-coded information while reflecting the incident SSK signals to the destination. A low-complexity beamformer and an efficient maximum-likelihood (ML) detector are designed for RIS-SSK-PB and RIS-SSK-ASTBC, respectively. Approximate expressions for the average bit error probabilities of the source and/or the RIS are derived in closed-form assuming ML detection. Extensive computer simulations are conducted to verify the performance analysis. Results show that RIS-SSK-PB significantly outperforms the existing RIS-free and RIS-based SSK schemes, and RIS-SSK-ASTBC enables highly reliable transmission with throughput improvement.

Multiscale Attention Guided Network for COVID-19 Diagnosis Using Chest X-ray Images

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is one of the most destructive pandemic after millennium, forcing the world to tackle a health crisis. Automated lung infections classification using chest X-ray (CXR) images could strengthen diagnostic capability when handling COVID-19. However, classifying COVID-19 from pneumonia cases using CXR image is a difficult task because of shared spatial characteristics, high feature variation and contrast diversity between cases. Moreover, massive data collection is impractical for a newly emerged disease, which limited the performance of data thirsty deep learning models. To address these challenges, Multiscale Attention Guided deep network with Soft Distance regularization (MAG-SD) is proposed to automatically classify COVID-19 from pneumonia CXR images. In MAG-SD, MA-Net is used to produce prediction vector and attention from multiscale feature maps. To improve the robustness of trained model and relieve the shortage of training data, attention guided augmentations along with a soft distance regularization are posed, which aims at generating meaningful augmentations and reduce noise. Our multiscale attention model achieves better classification performance on our pneumonia CXR image dataset. Plentiful experiments are proposed for MAG-SD which demonstrates its unique advantage in pneumonia classification over cutting-edge models. The code is available at https://github.com/JasonLeeGHub/MAG-SD.

The ever-growing popularity and rapid improving of artificial intelligence (AI) have raised rethinking on the evolution of wireless networks. Mobile edge computing (MEC) provides a natural platform for AI applications since it is with rich computation resources to train machine learning (ML) models, as well as low-latency access to the data generated by mobile and internet of things (IoT) devices. In this paper, we present an infrastructure to perform ML tasks at an MEC server with the assistance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). In contrast to conventional communication systems where the principal criterions are to maximize the throughput, we aim at maximizing the learning performance. Specifically, we minimize the maximum learning error of all participating users by jointly optimizing transmit power of mobile users, beamforming vectors of the base station (BS), and the phase-shift matrix of the RIS. An alternating optimization (AO)-based framework is proposed to optimize the three terms iteratively, where a successive convex approximation (SCA)-based algorithm is developed to solve the power allocation problem, closed-form expressions of the beamforming vectors are derived, and an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)-based algorithm is designed together with an error level searching (ELS) framework to effectively solve the challenging nonconvex optimization problem of the phase-shift matrix. Simulation results demonstrate significant gains of deploying an RIS and validate the advantages of our proposed algorithms over various benchmarks. Lastly, a unified communication-training-inference platform is developed based on the CARLA platform and the SECOND network, and a use case (3D object detection in autonomous driving) for the proposed scheme is demonstrated on the developed platform.

Learning Centric Wireless Resource Allocation for Edge Computing: Algorithm and Experiment

Edge intelligence is an emerging network architecture that integrates sensing, communication, computing components, and supports various machine learning applications, where a fundamental communication question is: how to allocate the limited wireless resources (such as time, energy) to the simultaneous model training of heterogeneous learning tasks? Existing methods ignore two important facts: 1) different models have heterogeneous demands on training data; 2) there is a mismatch between the simulated environment and the real-world environment. As a result, they could lead to low learning performance in practice. This paper proposes the learning centric wireless resource allocation (LCWRA) scheme that maximizes the worst learning performance of multiple tasks. Analysis shows that the optimal transmission time has an inverse power relationship with respect to the generalization error. Finally, both simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the performance of the proposed LCWRA scheme and its robustness in real implementation.

MT-Teql: Evaluating and Augmenting Consistency of Text-to-SQL Models with Metamorphic Testing

Text-to-SQL is a task to generate SQL queries from human utterances. However, due to the variation of natural language, two semantically equivalent utterances may appear differently in the lexical level. Likewise, user preferences (e.g., the choice of normal forms) can lead to dramatic changes in table structures when expressing conceptually identical schemas. Envisioning the general difficulty for text-to-SQL models to preserve prediction consistency against linguistic and schema variations, we propose MT-Teql, a Metamorphic Testing-based framework for systematically evaluating and augmenting the consistency of TExt-to-SQL models. Inspired by the principles of software metamorphic testing, MT-Teql delivers a model-agnostic framework which implements a comprehensive set of metamorphic relations (MRs) to conduct semantics-preserving transformations toward utterances and schemas. Model Inconsistency can be exposed when the original and transformed inputs induce different SQL queries. In addition, we leverage the transformed inputs to retrain models for further model robustness boost. Our experiments show that our framework exposes thousands of prediction errors from SOTA models and enriches existing datasets by order of magnitude, eliminating over 40% inconsistency errors without compromising standard accuracy.

Multi-Domain Multi-Task Rehearsal for Lifelong Learning

Rehearsal, seeking to remind the model by storing old knowledge in lifelong learning, is one of the most effective ways to mitigate catastrophic forgetting, i.e., biased forgetting of previous knowledge when moving to new tasks. However, the old tasks of the most previous rehearsal-based methods suffer from the unpredictable domain shift when training the new task. This is because these methods always ignore two significant factors. First, the Data Imbalance between the new task and old tasks that makes the domain of old tasks prone to shift. Second, the Task Isolation among all tasks will make the domain shift toward unpredictable directions; To address the unpredictable domain shift, in this paper, we propose Multi-Domain Multi-Task (MDMT) rehearsal to train the old tasks and new task parallelly and equally to break the isolation among tasks. Specifically, a two-level angular margin loss is proposed to encourage the intra-class/task compactness and inter-class/task discrepancy, which keeps the model from domain chaos. In addition, to further address domain shift of the old tasks, we propose an optional episodic distillation loss on the memory to anchor the knowledge for each old task. Experiments on benchmark datasets validate the proposed approach can effectively mitigate the unpredictable domain shift.

Phase sensitivity approaching quantum Cramer-Rao bound in a modified SU(1,1) interferometer

SU(1,1) interferometers, based on the usage of nonlinear elements, are superior to passive interferometers in phase sensitivity. However, the SU(1,1) interferometer cannot make full use of photons carrying phase information as the second nonlinear element annihilates some of the photons inside. Here, we focus on improving phase sensitivity and propose a new protocol based on a modified SU(1,1) interferometer, where the second nonlinear element is replaced by a beam splitter. We utilize two coherent states as inputs and implement balanced homodyne measurement at the output. Our analysis suggests that the protocol we propose can achieve sub-shot-noise-limited phase sensitivity and is robust against photon loss and background noise. Our work is important for practical quantum metrology using SU(1,1) interferometers.

Federated Matrix Factorization: Algorithm Design and Application to Data Clustering

Recent demands on data privacy have called for federated learning (FL) as a new distributed learning paradigm in massive and heterogeneous networks. Although many FL algorithms have been proposed, few of them have considered the matrix factorization (MF) model, which is known to have a vast number of signal processing and machine learning applications. Different from the existing FL algorithms that are designed for smooth problems with single block of variables, in federated MF (FedMF), one has to deal with challenging non-convex and non-smooth problems (due to constraints or regularization) with two blocks of variables. In this paper, we address the challenge by proposing two new FedMF algorithms, namely, FedMAvg and FedMGS, based on the model averaging and gradient sharing principles, respectively. Both FedMAvg and FedMGS adopt multiple steps of local updates per communication round to speed up convergence, and allow only a randomly sampled subset of clients to communicate with the server for reducing the communication cost. Convergence analyses for the two algorithms are respectively presented, which delineate the impacts of data distribution, local update number, and partial client communication on the algorithm performance. By focusing on a data clustering task, extensive experiment results are presented to examine the practical performance of both algorithms, as well as demonstrating their efficacy over the existing distributed clustering algorithms.
