Strong coupling between a single-photon and a two-photon Fock state

The realization of strong nonlinear coupling between single photons has been a long-standing goal in quantum optics and quantum information science, promising wide impact applications, such as all-optical deterministic quantum logic and single-photon frequency conversion. Here, we report an experimental observation of the strong coupling between a single-photon and a two-photon Fock state in an ultrastrongly-coupled circuit-QED system. This strong nonlinear interaction is realized by introducing a detuned flux qubit working as an effective coupler between two modes of a superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator. The ultrastrong light--matter interaction breaks the excitation number conservation, and an external flux bias breaks the parity conservation. The combined effect of the two enables the strong one--two-photon coupling. Quantum Rabi-like avoided crossing is resolved when tuning the two-photon resonance frequency of the first mode across the single-photon resonance frequency of the second mode. Within this new photonic regime, we observe the thresholdless second harmonic generation for a mean photon number below one. Our results represent a key step towards a new regime of quantum nonlinear optics, where individual photons can deterministically and coherently interact with each other in the absence of any stimulating fields.

Deterministic two-photon C-Z gate with the two-photon quantum Rabi model

We propose a scheme for realizing a deterministic two-photon C-Z gate based on variants of the two-photon quantum Rabi model (QRM), which is feasible within the framework of circuit QED. We begin by utilizing the two-photon interaction to implement the nonlinear sign (NS) gate, and subsequently, we construct the C-Z gate following the KLM scheme. We consider three different regimes: the strong coupling regime, the perturbative ultrastrong coupling regime, and the large detuning regime. Our results indicate that the C-Z gate operates fast with high fidelity, and is robust against decoherence. We also show the photonic state in the waveguide can be input into the circuit QED system through a variable coupler, and released after interaction with almost the same waveform except for a $π$-phase shift. Our scheme offers a suitable approach for achieving fast and deterministic two-photon quantum gates via light-matter interactions.

Phase driven unconventional superradiance phase transition in non-Hermitian cascaded quantum Rabi cavities

This study investigates phase-driven symmetry breaking leading to superradiance phase transitions in cascaded non-Hermitian quantum Rabi cavities. Non-Hermiticity is introduced via the phase coupling $φ$ between the atom and the optical field. In the thermodynamic limit of the quantum harmonic oscillator, we analytically derive the superradiance phase boundary, validated by observables. An unconventional quantum phase transition without a Hermitian analogue arises when $|φ|=\fracπ{4}$ or $|φ|=\frac{3π}{4}$, where the phase boundary is uniquely determined by the cavity coupling, at $\mathcal{J}=\frac{1}{2}$, independent of the atom-photon coupling strength $g$. For other $φ$, the phase boundary relies on both $\mathcal{J}$ and $g$, similar to the scenario observed in Hermitian systems. Furthermore, we identify phase-driven first- and second-order superradiance phase transitions, focusing on the quantum criticality of the second-order transition by determining the critical exponents and the universality class. The feasibility of experimental realization is also discussed, aiming to inspire further studies on non-Hermitian superradiance quantum phase transitions.

Probing the symmetry breaking of a light--matter system by an ancillary qubit

Hybrid quantum systems in the ultrastrong, and even more in the deep-strong, coupling regimes can exhibit exotic physical phenomena and promise new applications in quantum technologies. In these nonperturbative regimes, a qubit--resonator system has an entangled quantum vacuum with a nonzero average photon number in the resonator, where the photons are virtual and cannot be directly detected. The vacuum field, however, is able to induce the symmetry breaking of a dispersively coupled probe qubit. We experimentally observe the parity symmetry breaking of an ancillary Xmon artificial atom induced by the field of a lumped-element superconducting resonator deep-strongly coupled with a flux qubit. This result opens a way to experimentally explore the novel quantum-vacuum effects emerging in the deep-strong coupling regime.

Hybridized Frequency Combs in Multimode Cavity Electromechanical System

The cavity electromechanical devices with radiation-pressure-interaction induced Kerr-like nonlinearity are promising candidates to generate microwave frequency combs. We construct a silicon-nitride-membrane-based superconducting cavity electromechanical device and study two mechanical modes mediated synergistic frequency combs. Around the threshold of intracavity field instability, we firstly show independent frequency combs with tooth spacing equalling to each mechanical mode frequency. At the overlap boundaries of these two individual mechanical mode mediated instability thresholds, we observe hybridization of frequency combs based on the cavity field mediated indirect coupling between these two mechanical modes. The spectrum lines turn to be unequally spaced but can be recognized into combinations of the coexisting frequency combs. Beyond the boundary, the comb reverts to the single-mode case, and which mechanical mode frequency will the tooth spacing depend on the mode competition. Our work demonstrates mechanical mode competition enabled switchability of frequency comb tooth spacing and can be extended to other devices with multiple nonlinearities.

Photon-Dressed Bloch-Siegert Shift in an Ultrastrongly Coupled Circuit Quantum Electrodynamical System

A cavity quantum electrodynamical (QED) system beyond the strong-coupling regime is expected to exhibit intriguing quantum phenomena. Here we report a direct measurement of the photon-dressed qubit transition frequencies up to four photons by harnessing the same type of state transitions in an ultrastrongly coupled circuit-QED system realized by inductively coupling a superconducting flux qubit to a coplanar-waveguide resonator. This demonstrates a convincing observation of the photon-dressed Bloch-Siegert shift in the ultrastrongly coupled quantum system. Moreover, our results show that the photon-dressed Bloch-Siegert shift becomes more pronounced as the photon number increases, which is a characteristic of the quantum Rabi model.

Time-domain grating with a periodically driven qutrit

Physical systems in the time domain may exhibit analogous phenomena in real space, such as time crystals, time-domain Fresnel lenses, and modulational interference in a qubit. Here we report the experimental realization of time-domain grating using a superconducting qutrit in periodically modulated probe and control fields via two schemes: Simultaneous modulation and complementary modulation. Both experimental and numerical results exhibit modulated Autler-Townes (AT) and modulation-induced diffraction (MID) effects. Theoretical results also confirm that the peak positions of the interference fringes of AT and MID effects are determined by the usual two-level relative phases, while the observed diffraction fringes, appearing only in the complementary modulation, are however related to the three-level relative phase. Further analysis indicates that such a single-atom time-domain diffraction originates from the correlation effect between the two time-domain gratings. Moreover, we find that the widths of the diffraction fringes are independent of the control-field power. Our results shed light on the experimental exploration of quantum coherence for modulated multi-level systems and may find promising applications in fast all-microwave switches and quantum-gate operations in the strong-driving regime.

Magnon Kerr effect in a strongly coupled cavity-magnon system

We experimentally demonstrate magnon Kerr effect in a cavity-magnon system, where magnons in a small yttrium iron garnet (YIG) sphere are strongly but dispersively coupled to the photons in a three-dimensional cavity. When the YIG sphere is pumped to generate considerable magnons, the Kerr effect yields a perceptible shift of the cavity's central frequency and more appreciable shifts of the magnon modes. We derive an analytical relation between the magnon frequency shift and the drive power for the uniformly magnetized YIG sphere and find that it agrees very well with the experimental results of the Kittel mode. Our study paves the way to explore nonlinear effects in the cavity-magnon system.
