First-Order Transitions in Weak Ising Spin-Orbit-Coupled Superconductors

Ising spin-orbit coupling (ISOC) can strongly protect superconductivity against exchange-field-induced depairing, typically leading to critical fields far exceeding the Pauli limit and continuous (second-order) phase transitions. Here, using a free-energy approach, we demonstrate that first-order transitions can emerge in superconductors with weak ISOC under large exchange fields. In this regime, conventional theoretical approaches based on the gap equation fail to determine the thermodynamic critical field and instead yield only the supercooling field. Moreover, we identify two pronounced in-gap coherence peaks in the quasiparticle spectra, which represent the weak-ISOC manifestation of the previously reported mirage-gap states. Our results establish the importance of free-energy analysis in describing the first-order phase transitions in Ising superconductors and reveal distinct spectroscopic signatures of the weak-ISOC regime.

Temperature-Induced Superconductivity Enhancement under Large Exchange Field

Through a comprehensive free energy analysis, we demonstrate that finite temperature can simultaneously weaken superconductivity and mitigate spin polarization induced depairing, leading to potential non-monotonic temperature-dependent behaviors in superconductors subjected to large exchange fields. Remarkably, superconductivity can be counterintuitively enhanced by temperature when the Zeeman energy exceeds the superconducting order parameter, owing to the competition between thermal and magnetic effects. We propose that multiband effect offers one possible microscopic route for this temperature-induced enhancement and demonstrate it explicitly within a two-band superconducting model. A detailed parameter analysis identifies the conditions under which this phenomenon emerges, suggesting that temperature-enhanced superconductivity may be observable in materials such as MgB2 and FeSe through transport and tunneling measurements.

Multiple Charge density waves and lattice superstructures in thin-layer TmTe2 and TmTe3

We have grown thulium tellurides (TmTe2, TmTe3) thin layers (less than four layers) on graphene/SiC (0001) by molecular beam epitaxy. The charge density waves (CDWs) and lattice superstructures (LSs) are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. Clear CDW patterns in real space are observed on surface of metallic TmTe3. Two CDWs are with wave vectors 0.29c* and 0.31a* respectively. LSs with various periods are unveiled on the surface of TmTe2 and TmTe3. The electronic structures of these films are semiconducting. These results show that superstructures in rare earth tellurides can have two origins, CDWs or LSs.

Unusual giant magnetoresistance effect in heterojunction structure of ultra-thin single-crystal Pb film on silicon substrate

Superconductor films on semiconductor substrates draw much attention recently since the derived superconductor-based electronics have been shown promising for future data process and storage technologies. By growing atomically uniform single-crystal epitaxial Pb films of several nanometers thick on Si wafers to form a sharp superconductor-semiconductor heterojunction, we have obtained an unusual giant magnetoresistance effect when the Pb film is superconducting. In addition to the great fundamental interest of this effect, the simple structure and compatibility and scalability with current Si-based semiconductor technology offer a great opportunity for integrating superconducting circuits and detectors in a single chip.
