Channel Map-Based Channel Estimation for Near-Field UM-MIMO with Movable Planar Arrays

Accurate channel estimation is essential for coherent transmission in ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (UM-MIMO) systems, where near-field propagation and high-dimensional spatial channels impose substantial signal processing challenges. Movable antenna architectures increase the estimation complexity further due to geometry-dependent channel variations. Existing approaches struggle to balance accuracy and complexity, motivating the use of environment-dependent propagation structures for efficient estimation. To this end, this paper proposes a unified channel map-based channel estimation framework for UM-MIMO systems, which integrates movable planar array reconfiguration and near-field spherical-wave modeling to support geometry-aware line-of-sight (LoS) estimation and efficient non-LoS (NLoS) recovery. A channel map-based LoS estimator is proposed combining coarse user position information with a Fisher information-guided antenna placement strategy. Two efficient NLoS estimation methods are also presented, including a sketch-based reduced-subspace estimator for low-complexity processing and a channel map-based estimator that leverages scatterer location information for near-optimal performance. The framework further incorporates visibility-region modeling and a structural similarity-based pilot assignment strategy for multi-user scenarios. Simulation results show that the proposed channel map-based framework improves estimation accuracy, reduces computational overhead, and enhances scalability compared with state-of-the-art benchmarks without channel maps.

Sparse Activation for Sustainable Cell-Free Massive MIMO Networks: Less is More

Motivated by the vision of making sixth-generation (6G) networks sustainable, we study the sparse antenna/array activation problems in uplink cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF mMIMO) networks. We first develop an antenna-level optimal bilinear equalizer (OBE) weighting framework, in which each access point-user equipment (AP-UE) pair is assigned a matrix-valued long-term weight to shape the contribution of individual antenna elements, thereby generalizing the conventional large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) strategy from scalar coefficients to antenna-element-aware weighting. Building on this structure, we formulate sparse antenna activation as structured sparsity-inducing mean square error (MSE) minimization problems, and design four activation schemes at two granularities: antenna-level and array-level, each with UE-specific and network-wide (all-UEs) variants. The resulting convex problems are solved efficiently via the proximal method with closed-form group-wise updates, while the network-wide schemes are modeled through hierarchical sparsity and handled by a tree-structured proximal operator. Numerical results under correlated Rician channels and a detailed power consumption model demonstrate that the OBE weighting scheme consistently improves spectral efficiency over the LSFD, with gains increasing with the number of antennas. Meanwhile, the studied sparse activation schemes can achieve substantial energy efficiency improvement and power reduction with controllable spectral efficiency loss.

A Novel 6G Dynamic Channel Map Based on a Hybrid Channel Model

In the sixth generation (6G) wireless communication networks, the device density, antenna number, and the complexity of communication scenarios will significantly increase, which brings great challenges for system design and network optimization. By obtaining channel information in advance, channel map has become a promising solution to these challenges in 6G era. However, conventional channel maps cannot be updated in time as physical environment changes. To solve the problem, a novel dynamic channel map (DCM) is proposed in this work. For DCM construction, we further present a ray tracing (RT) and geometric stochastic hybrid channel model (RT-GSHCM), which pre-constructs the DCM offline by RT and updates it online by geometry-based stochastic channel model (GBSM). By this way, the DCM can provide time-varying channel information and channel properties while matintaining accuracy. Next, a channel measurement campaign is conducted, and the measurement results are compared with the RT-GSHCM, RT, and GBSM. The comparison results validate the accuracy of DCM. Meanwhile, the time cost on DCM update is compared with that of conventional channel maps, illustrating the time-efficiency of DCM. Finally, important statistical channel properties of RT-GSHCM are further derived, analyzed, and compared under different configurations of interaction objects in physical environment.

Joint Low-Rank and Sparse Bayesian Channel Estimation for Ultra-Massive MIMO Communications

This letter investigates channel estimation for ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications. We propose a joint low-rank and sparse Bayesian estimation (LRSBE) algorithm for spatial non-stationary ultra-massive channels by exploiting the low-rankness and sparsity in the beam domain. Specifically, the channel estimation integrates sparse Bayesian learning and soft-threshold gradient descent within the expectation-maximization framework. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art alternatives under different signal-to-noise ratio conditions in terms of estimation accuracy and overall complexity.

Exploiting Deep Reinforcement Learning for Edge Caching in Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems

Cell-free massive multiple-input-multiple-output is promising to meet the stringent quality-of-experience (QoE) requirements of railway wireless communications by coordinating many successional access points (APs) to serve the onboard users coherently. A key challenge is how to deliver the desired contents timely due to the radical changing propagation environment caused by the growing train speed. In this paper, we propose to proactively cache the likely-requesting contents at the upcoming APs which perform the coherent transmission to reduce end-to-end delay. A long-term QoE-maximization problem is formulated and two cache placement algorithms are proposed. One is based on heuristic convex optimization (HCO) and the other exploits deep reinforcement learning (DRL) with soft actor-critic (SAC). Compared to the conventional benchmark, numerical results show the advantage of our proposed algorithms on QoE and hit probability. With the advanced DRL model, SAC outperforms HCO on QoE by predicting the user requests accurately.

Energy-Efficient Cell-Free Massive MIMO Through Sparse Large-Scale Fading Processing

Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF mMIMO) systems serve the user equipments (UEs) by geographically distributed access points (APs) by means of joint transmission and reception. To limit the power consumption due to fronthaul signaling and processing, each UE should only be served by a subset of the APs, but it is hard to identify that subset. Previous works have tackled this combinatorial problem heuristically. In this paper, we propose a sparse distributed processing design for CF mMIMO, where the AP-UE association and long-term signal processing coefficients are jointly optimized. We formulate two sparsity-inducing mean-squared error (MSE) minimization problems and solve them by using efficient proximal approaches with block-coordinate descent. For the downlink, more specifically, we develop a virtually optimized large-scale fading precoding (V-LSFP) scheme using uplink-downlink duality. The numerical results show that the proposed sparse processing schemes work well in both uplink and downlink. In particular, they achieve almost the same spectral efficiency as if all APs would serve all UEs, while the energy efficiency is 2-4 times higher thanks to the reduced processing and signaling.

Improving Fairness for Cell-Free Massive MIMO Through Interference-Aware Massive Access

Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF mMIMO) provides good interference management by coordinating many more access points (APs) than user equipments (UEs). It becomes challenging to determine which APs should serve which UEs with which pilots when the number of UEs approximates the number of APs and far exceeds the number of pilots. Compared to the previous work, a better compromise between spectral efficiency (SE) and implementation simplicity is needed in such massive access scenarios. This paper proposes an interference-aware massive access (IAMA) scheme realizing joint AP-UE association and pilot assignment for CF mMIMO by exploiting the large-scale interference features. We propose an interference-aware reward as a novel performance metric and use it to develop two iterative algorithms to optimize the association and pilot assignment. The numerical results show a prominent advantage of our IAMA scheme over the benchmark schemes in terms of the user fairness and the average SE.

Sparse Large-Scale Fading Decoding in Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems

Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF mMIMO) systems are characterized by having many more access points (APs) than user equipments (UEs). A key challenge is to determine which APs should serve which UEs. Previous work has tackled this combinatorial problem heuristically. This paper proposes a sparse large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) design for CF mMIMO to jointly optimize the association and LSFD. We formulate a group sparsity problem and then solve it using a proximal algorithm with block-coordinate descent. Numerical results show that sparse LSFD achieves almost the same spectral efficiency as optimal LSFD, thus achieving a higher energy efficiency since the processing and signaling are reduced.

Treating Interference as Noise in Cell-Free Massive MIMO Networks

How to manage the interference introduced by the enormous wireless devices is a crucial issue to address in the prospective sixth-generation (6G) communications. The treating interference as noise (TIN) optimality conditions are commonly used for interference management and thus attract significant interest in existing wireless systems. Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF mMIMO) is a promising technology in 6G that exhibits high system throughput and excellent interference management by exploiting a large number of access points (APs) to serve the users collaboratively. In this paper, we take the first step on studying TIN in CF mMIMO systems from a stochastic geometry perspective by investigating the probability that the TIN conditions hold with spatially distributed network nodes. We propose a novel analytical framework for TIN in a CF mMIMO system with both Binomial Point Process (BPP) and Poisson Point Process (PPP) approximations. We derive the probability that the TIN conditions hold in close form using the PPP approximation. Numerical results validate our derived expressions and illustrate the impact of various system parameters on the probability that the TIN conditions hold.

Wireless Energy Transfer in RIS-Aided Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems: Opportunities and Challenges

In future sixth-generation (6G) mobile networks, the Internet-of-Everything (IoE) is expected to provide extremely massive connectivity for small battery-powered devices. Indeed, massive devices with limited energy storage capacity impose persistent energy demand hindering the lifetime of communication networks. As a remedy, wireless energy transfer (WET) is a key technology to address these critical energy supply issues. On the other hand, cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems offer an efficient network architecture to realize the roll-out of the IoE. In this article, we first propose the paradigm of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided CF massive MIMO systems for WET, including its potential application scenarios and system architecture. The four-stage transmission procedure is discussed and analyzed to illustrate the practicality of the architecture. Then we put forward and analyze the hardware design of RIS. Particularly, we discuss the three corresponding operating modes and the amalgamation of WET technology and RIS-aided CF massive MIMO. Representative simulation results are given to confirm the superior performance achieved by our proposed schemes. Also, we investigate the optimal location of deploying multiple RISs to achieve the best system performance. Finally, several important research directions of RIS-aided CF massive MIMO systems with WET are presented to inspire further potential investigation.

A Survey on User-Centric Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems

The mobile data traffic has been exponentially growing during the last decades, which has been enabled by the densification of the network infrastructure in terms of increased cell density (i.e., ultra-dense network (UDN)) and/or increased number of active antennas per access point (AP) (i.e., massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO)). However, neither UDN nor mMIMO will meet the increasing data rate demands of the sixth generation (6G) wireless communications due to the inter-cell interference and large quality-of-service variations, respectively. Cell-free (CF) mMIMO, which combines the best aspects of UDN and mMIMO, is viewed as a key solution to this issue. In such systems, each user equipment (UE) is served by a preferred set of surrounding APs cooperatively. In this paper, we provide a survey of the state-of-the-art literature on CF mMIMO. As a starting point, the significance and the basic properties of CF mMIMO are highlighted. We then present the canonical framework, where the essential details (i.e., transmission procedure and mathematical system model) are discussed. Next, we provide a deep look at the resource allocation and signal processing problems related to CF mMIMO and survey the up-to-date schemes and algorithms. After that, we discuss the practical issues when implementing CF mMIMO. Potential future directions are then pointed out. Finally, we conclude this paper with a summary of the key lessons learned in this field. This paper aims to provide a starting point for anyone who wants to conduct research on CF mMIMO for future wireless networks.

Structured Massive Access for Scalable Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems

How to meet the demand for increasing number of users, higher data rates, and stringent quality-of-service (QoS) in the beyond fifth-generation (B5G) networks? Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is considered as a promising solution, in which many wireless access points cooperate to jointly serve the users by exploiting coherent signal processing. However, there are still many unsolved practical issues in cell-free massive MIMO systems, whereof scalable massive access implementation is one of the most vital. In this paper, we propose a new framework for structured massive access in cell-free massive MIMO systems, which comprises one initial access algorithm, a partial large-scale fading decoding (P-LSFD) strategy, two pilot assignment schemes, and one fractional power control policy. New closed-form spectral efficiency (SE) expressions with maximum ratio (MR) combining are derived. The simulation results show that our proposed framework provides high SE when using local partial minimum mean-square error (LP-MMSE) and MR combining. Specifically, the proposed initial access algorithm and pilot assignment schemes outperform their corresponding benchmarks, P-LSFD achieves scalability with a negligible performance loss compared to the conventional optimal large-scale fading decoding (LSFD), and scalable fractional power control provides a controllable trade-off between user fairness and the average SE.

Physical Layer Security over Fluctuating Two-Ray Fading Channels

Ensuring the physical layer security (PHY-security) of millimeter wave (mmWave) communications is one of the key factors for the success of 5G. Recent field measurements show that conventional fading models cannot accurately model the random fluctuations of mmWave signals. To tackle this challenge, the fluctuating two-ray (FTR) fading model has been proposed. In this correspondence, we comprehensively analyze the PHY-security in mmWave communications over FTR fading channels. More specifically, we derive analytical expressions for significant PHY-security metrics, such as average secrecy capacity, secrecy outage probability, and the probability of strictly positive secrecy capacity, with simple functions. The effect of channel parameters on the PHY-security has been validated by numerical results.
