I3DE: An IDE for Inspecting Inconsistencies in PL/SQL Code

In this paper, we introduce I3DE (Inconsistency Inspecting IDE) - an IDE plugin to inspect inconsistencies in PL/SQL code. We first observed the potential issues, e.g., misuses or bugs, that are introduced by the inconsistent understanding of PL/SQL semantics by PL/SQL programmers and DBMS developers, and propose a metamorphic testing-based approach for inspecting such inconsistencies in PL/SQL code. We design and implement our approach in I3DE, a widely usable plugin for the IntelliJ Platform. We conducted a comparative user study involving 16 participants, and the findings indicate that I3DE is consistently effective and efficient in helping programmers identify and avoid inconsistencies across different programming difficulties

Game-Theoretic Unlearnable Example Generator

Unlearnable example attacks are data poisoning attacks aiming to degrade the clean test accuracy of deep learning by adding imperceptible perturbations to the training samples, which can be formulated as a bi-level optimization problem. However, directly solving this optimization problem is intractable for deep neural networks. In this paper, we investigate unlearnable example attacks from a game-theoretic perspective, by formulating the attack as a nonzero sum Stackelberg game. First, the existence of game equilibria is proved under the normal setting and the adversarial training setting. It is shown that the game equilibrium gives the most powerful poison attack in that the victim has the lowest test accuracy among all networks within the same hypothesis space, when certain loss functions are used. Second, we propose a novel attack method, called the Game Unlearnable Example (GUE), which has three main gradients. (1) The poisons are obtained by directly solving the equilibrium of the Stackelberg game with a first-order algorithm. (2) We employ an autoencoder-like generative network model as the poison attacker. (3) A novel payoff function is introduced to evaluate the performance of the poison. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that GUE can effectively poison the model in various scenarios. Furthermore, the GUE still works by using a relatively small percentage of the training data to train the generator, and the poison generator can generalize to unseen data well. Our implementation code can be found at https://github.com/hong-xian/gue.

Data-Dependent Stability Analysis of Adversarial Training

Stability analysis is an essential aspect of studying the generalization ability of deep learning, as it involves deriving generalization bounds for stochastic gradient descent-based training algorithms. Adversarial training is the most widely used defense against adversarial example attacks. However, previous generalization bounds for adversarial training have not included information regarding the data distribution. In this paper, we fill this gap by providing generalization bounds for stochastic gradient descent-based adversarial training that incorporate data distribution information. We utilize the concepts of on-average stability and high-order approximate Lipschitz conditions to examine how changes in data distribution and adversarial budget can affect robust generalization gaps. Our derived generalization bounds for both convex and non-convex losses are at least as good as the uniform stability-based counterparts which do not include data distribution information. Furthermore, our findings demonstrate how distribution shifts from data poisoning attacks can impact robust generalization.

The Dust Attenuation Scaling Relation of Star-Forming Galaxies in the EAGLE Simulations

Dust attenuation in star-forming galaxies (SFGs), as parameterized by the infrared excess (IRX $\equiv L_{\rm IR}/L_{\rm UV}$), is found to be tightly correlated with star formation rate (SFR), metallicity and galaxy size, following a universal IRX relation up to $z=3$. This scaling relation can provide a fundamental constraint for theoretical models to reconcile galaxy star formation, chemical enrichment, and structural evolution across cosmic time. We attempt to reproduce the universal IRX relation over $0.1\leq z\leq 2.5$ using the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulations and examine sensitive parameters in determining galaxy dust attenuation. Our findings show that while the predicted universal IRX relation from EAGLE approximately aligns with observations at $z\leq 0.5$, noticeable disparities arise at different stellar masses and higher redshifts. Specifically, we investigate how modifying various galaxy parameters can affect the predicted universal IRX relation in comparison to the observed data. We demonstrate that the simulated gas-phase metallicity is the critical quantity for the shape of the predicted universal IRX relation. We find that the influence of the infrared luminosity and infrared excess is less important while galaxy size has virtually no significant effect. Overall, the EAGLE simulations are not able to replicate some of the observed characteristics between IRX and galaxy parameters of SFGs, emphasizing the need for further investigation and testing for our current state-of-the-art theoretical models.

Bayesian Recursive Information Optical Imaging: A Ghost Imaging Scheme Based on Bayesian Filtering

Computational imaging~(CI) has been attracting a lot of interest in recent years for its superiority over traditional imaging in various applications. In CI systems, information is generally acquired in an encoded form and subsequently decoded via processing algorithms, which is quite in line with the information transmission mode of modern communication, and leads to emerging studies from the viewpoint of information optical imaging. Currently, one of the most important issues to be theoretically studied for CI is to quantitatively evaluate the fundamental ability of information acquisition, which is essential for both objective performance assessment and efficient design of imaging system. In this paper, by incorporating the Bayesian filtering paradigm, we propose a framework for CI that enables quantitative evaluation and design of the imaging system, and demonstate it based on ghost imaging. In specific, this framework can provide a quantitative evaluation on the acquired information through Fisher information and Cramér-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB), and the intrinsic performance of the imaging system can be accessed in real-time. With simulation and experiments, the framework is validated and compared with existing linear unbiased algorithms. In particular, the image retrieval can reach the CRLB. Furthermore, information-driven adaptive design for optimizing the information acquisition procedure is also achieved. By quantitative describing and efficient designing, the proposed framework is expected to promote the practical applications of CI techniques.

A ternary mixture model with dynamic boundary conditions

The influence of short-range interactions between a multi-phase, multi-component mixture and a solid wall in confined geometries is crucial in life sciences and engineering. In this work, we extend the Cahn-Hilliard model with dynamic boundary conditions from a binary to a ternary mixture, employing the Onsager principle that accounts for cross-coupling between forces and fluxes in both bulk and surface. Moreover, we have developed a linear, second-order, and unconditionally energy stable numerical scheme for solving the governing equations, utilizing the Invariant Energy Quadratization (IEQ) method. This efficient solver allows us to explore the impacts of wall-mixture interactions and dynamic boundary conditions on phenomena like spontaneous phase separation, coarsening processes, and the wettability of droplets on surfaces. We observe that wall-mixture interactions influence not only surface phenomena, such as droplet contact angles, but also patterns deep within the bulk. Additionally, the relaxation rates control the droplet spreading on surfaces. Furthermore, the cross-coupling relaxation rates in the bulk significantly affect coarsening patterns. Our work establishes a comprehensive framework for studying multi-component mixtures in confined geometries.

Experimental demonstration of mice tumor control with a laser-accelerated high-energy electron radiotherapy prototype

Radiotherapy using very-high-energy electron (VHEE) beams (50-300 MeV) has attracted considerable attention due to its advantageous dose deposition characteristics, enabling deep penetration and the potential for ultra-high dose rate treatment. One promising approach to compactly delivering these high energy electron beams in a cost-effective manner is laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA), which offers ultra-strong accelerating gradients. However, the transition from this concept to a functional machine intended for tumor treatment is still being investigated. Here we present the first self-developed prototype for LWFA-based VHEE radiotherapy, exhibiting high compactness (occupying less than 5 square meters) and high operational stability (validated over a period of one month). Subsequently, we employed this device to irradiate a tumor implanted in a mouse model. Following a dose delivery of $5.8\pm0.2$ Gy with precise tumor conformity, all irradiated mice exhibited pronounced control of tumor growth. For comparison, this tumor-control efficacy was similar to that achieved using commercial X-ray radiotherapy equipment operating at equivalent doses. These results demonstrate the potential of a compact laser-driven VHEE system for preclinical studies involving small animal models and its promising prospects for future clinical translation in cancer therapy.

A Scalable, High-Efficiency, Low-Energy-Spread, Laser Wakefield Accelerator using a Tri-plateau Plasma Channel

The emergence of multi-petawatt laser facilities is expected to push forward the maximum energy gain that can be achieved in a single stage of a LWFA to tens of GeV, which begs the question - is it likely to impact particle physics by providing a truly compact particle collider? Colliders have very stringent requirements on beam energy, acceleration efficiency and beam quality. In this article, we propose a LWFA scheme that can for the first time simultaneously achieve hitherto unrealized acceleration efficiency from the laser to the electron beam of >20% and a sub-one percent energy spread using a stepwise plasma structure and a nonlinearly chirped laser pulse. Three-dimensional high-fidelity simulations show that the nonlinear chirp can effectively mitigate the laser waveform distortion and lengthen the acceleration distance. This combined with an inter-stage rephasing process in the stepwise plasma can triple the beam energy gain compared to that in a uniform plasma for a fixed laser energy thereby dramatically increasing the efficiency. A dynamic beam loading effect can almost perfectly cancel the energy chirp that arises during the acceleration, leading to the sub-percent energy spread. This scheme is highly scalable and can be applied to peta-watt LWFA scenarios. Scaling laws are obtained that suggest electron beams with energy gain of >100 GeV, charge of 2 nC, and with an energy spread <1% can be realized with a high laser pulse to particle beam energy transfer efficiency in a LWFA driven by a peta-watt laser, which could be the basis for a proof of concept of one arm of a future electron-positron collider.

Comprehensive investigation of Quantum Oscillations in Semimetal Using an ac Composite Magnetoelectric Technique with Ultrahigh Sensitivity

Quantum oscillation (QO), a physical phenomenon that reflects the characteristics of the Fermi surface and transport fermions, has been extensively observed in metals and semimetals through various approaches, like magnetostriction, magnetization, resistivity, and thermoelectric power. However, only some allowed oscillation frequencies can be revealed by each individual method, particularly in semimetals with intricate Fermi pockets and associated magnetic breakdown phenomena. In this paper, we present the application of an ac composite magnetoelectric (ME) technique to measure the QOs of a topological nodal-line semimetal, ZrSiS, which possesses six fundamental QO frequencies. By employing the ME technique with a maximum magnetic field of 13 T and a minimum temperature of 2 K, we are able to capture all the fundamental frequencies and most of the permissible magnetic breakdown frequencies. In comparison, some of the frequencies were missing in the aforementioned four methods under identical measurement conditions. Remarkably, a series of magnetic breakdown frequencies around 8000 T were revealed even in a magnetic field as low as 7.5 T. These findings highlight the ME technique as an ultrahigh-sensitive tool for studying Dirac Fermions and other topological semimetals with complex Fermi surfaces.

A Pilot Study on Dialogue-Level Dependency Parsing for Chinese

Dialogue-level dependency parsing has received insufficient attention, especially for Chinese. To this end, we draw on ideas from syntactic dependency and rhetorical structure theory (RST), developing a high-quality human-annotated corpus, which contains 850 dialogues and 199,803 dependencies. Considering that such tasks suffer from high annotation costs, we investigate zero-shot and few-shot scenarios. Based on an existing syntactic treebank, we adopt a signal-based method to transform seen syntactic dependencies into unseen ones between elementary discourse units (EDUs), where the signals are detected by masked language modeling. Besides, we apply single-view and multi-view data selection to access reliable pseudo-labeled instances. Experimental results show the effectiveness of these baselines. Moreover, we discuss several crucial points about our dataset and approach.

What boost galaxy mergers in two massive galaxy protoclusters at z = 2.24

Characterizing the structural properties of galaxies in high-redshift protoclusters is key to our understanding of the environmental effects on galaxy evolution in the early stages of galaxy and structure formation. In this study, we assess the structural properties of 85 and 87 Halpha emission-line candidates (HAEs) in the densest regions of two massive protoclusters, BOSS1244 and BOSS1542, respectively, using HST H-band imaging data. Our results show a true pair fraction of 22+-5 (33+-6) percent in BOSS1244 (BOSS1542), which yields a merger rate of 0.41+-0.09 (0.52+-0.04) per Gyr for massive HAEs with log (M_*/M_sun) > 10.3. This rate is 1.8 (2.8) times higher than that of the general fields at the same epoch. Our sample of HAEs exhibits half-light radii and Sersic indices that cover a broader range than field star-forming galaxies. Additionally, about 15 percent of the HAEs are as compact as the most massive (log(M_*/M_sun) > 11) spheroid-dominated population. These results suggest that the high galaxy density and cold dynamical state (i.e., velocity dispersion of <400 km/s) are key factors that drive galaxy mergers and promote structural evolution in the two protoclusters. Our findings also indicate that both the local environment (on group scales) and the global environment play essential roles in shaping galaxy morphologies in protoclusters. This is evident in the systematic differences observed in the structural properties of galaxies between BOSS1244 and BOSS1542.

On the thermal effect of porous material in porous media Rayleigh-Bénard convection

We perform a two-dimensional numerical study on the thermal effect of porous media on global heat transport and flow structure in Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection, focusing on the role of thermal conductivity $λ$ of porous media, which ranges from $0.1$ to $50$ relative to the fluid. The simulation is carried out in a square RB cell with the Rayleigh number $Ra$ ranging from $10^7$ to $10^9$ and the Prandtl number $Pr$ fixed at $4.3$. The porosity of the system is fixed at $ϕ=0.812$, with the porous media modeled by a set of randomly displayed circular obstacles. For a fixed $Ra$, the increase of conductivity shows a small effect on the total heat transfer, slightly depressing the Nusselt number. The limited influence comes from the small number of obstacles contacting with thermal plumes in the system as well as the counteraction of the increased plume area and the depressed plume strength. The study shows that the global heat transfer is insensitive to the conduction effect of separated porous media in the bulk region, which may have implications for industrial designs.

A Review on Machine Theory of Mind

Theory of Mind (ToM) is the ability to attribute mental states to others, the basis of human cognition. At present, there has been growing interest in the AI with cognitive abilities, for example in healthcare and the motoring industry. Beliefs, desires, and intentions are the early abilities of infants and the foundation of human cognitive ability, as well as for machine with ToM. In this paper, we review recent progress in machine ToM on beliefs, desires, and intentions. And we shall introduce the experiments, datasets and methods of machine ToM on these three aspects, summarize the development of different tasks and datasets in recent years, and compare well-behaved models in aspects of advantages, limitations and applicable conditions, hoping that this study can guide researchers to quickly keep up with latest trend in this field. Unlike other domains with a specific task and resolution framework, machine ToM lacks a unified instruction and a series of standard evaluation tasks, which make it difficult to formally compare the proposed models. We argue that, one method to address this difficulty is now to present a standard assessment criteria and dataset, better a large-scale dataset covered multiple aspects of ToM.

A Survey on Automated Driving System Testing: Landscapes and Trends

Automated Driving Systems (ADS) have made great achievements in recent years thanks to the efforts from both academia and industry. A typical ADS is composed of multiple modules, including sensing, perception, planning, and control, which brings together the latest advances in different domains. Despite these achievements, safety assurance of ADS is of great significance, since unsafe behavior of ADS can bring catastrophic consequences. Testing has been recognized as an important system validation approach that aims to expose unsafe system behavior; however, in the context of ADS, it is extremely challenging to devise effective testing techniques, due to the high complexity and multidisciplinarity of the systems. There has been great much literature that focuses on the testing of ADS, and a number of surveys have also emerged to summarize the technical advances. Most of the surveys focus on the system-level testing performed within software simulators, and they thereby ignore the distinct features of different modules. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on the existing ADS testing literature, which takes into account both module-level and system-level testing. Specifically, we make the following contributions: (1) we survey the module-level testing techniques for ADS and highlight the technical differences affected by the features of different modules; (2) we also survey the system-level testing techniques, with focuses on the empirical studies that summarize the issues occurring in system development or deployment, the problems due to the collaborations between different modules, and the gap between ADS testing in simulators and the real world; (3) we identify the challenges and opportunities in ADS testing, which pave the path to the future research in this field.

Wukong-Reader: Multi-modal Pre-training for Fine-grained Visual Document Understanding

Unsupervised pre-training on millions of digital-born or scanned documents has shown promising advances in visual document understanding~(VDU). While various vision-language pre-training objectives are studied in existing solutions, the document textline, as an intrinsic granularity in VDU, has seldom been explored so far. A document textline usually contains words that are spatially and semantically correlated, which can be easily obtained from OCR engines. In this paper, we propose Wukong-Reader, trained with new pre-training objectives to leverage the structural knowledge nested in document textlines. We introduce textline-region contrastive learning to achieve fine-grained alignment between the visual regions and texts of document textlines. Furthermore, masked region modeling and textline-grid matching are also designed to enhance the visual and layout representations of textlines. Experiments show that our Wukong-Reader has superior performance on various VDU tasks such as information extraction. The fine-grained alignment over textlines also empowers Wukong-Reader with promising localization ability.

Velocity offset between emission and absorption lines might be an effective indicator of dual core system

This paper presents a detection of significant velocity offset between emission and absorption lines for a dual core system in SDSS~J155708.82+273518.74 (= SDSS~J1557). The photometric image of SDSS~J1557 exhibits clear two cores with a projected separation of $\sim$2.2 arcseconds (4.9 kpc) determined by GALFIT. Based on the applications of the commonly accepted pPXF code with 636 theoretical SSP templates, the host galaxy contribution can be well determined. Then, the emission line features of SDSS~J1557 can be well measured after subtraction of host starlight. It is found that the velocity offset of emission lines with respect to absorption lines reaches $458 \pm 13$ km/s. According to the Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich (BPT) diagram, SDSS J1557 is a composite galaxy. In addition, SDSS J1557 can well fit the $M_{\rm BH}-σ_{\ast}$ relation of bulges and the galaxy merger would not change this relation. Two reasonable models (say, AGN-driven outflow vs. dual core system) have been discussed to explain this velocity offset. The model of AGN-driven outflow fails to interpret the systematic redshift of emission lines and similar velocity offsets for various emission lines in SDSS~J1557. A significant velocity offset between emission and absorption lines might be an effective indicator of dual core system.

HyperEnclave: An Open and Cross-platform Trusted Execution Environment

A number of trusted execution environments (TEEs) have been proposed by both academia and industry. However, most of them require specific hardware or firmware changes and are bound to specific hardware vendors (such as Intel, AMD, ARM, and IBM). In this paper, we propose HyperEnclave, an open and cross-platform process-based TEE that relies on the widely-available virtualization extension to create the isolated execution environment. In particular, HyperEnclave is designed to support the flexible enclave operation modes to fulfill the security and performance demands under various enclave workloads. We provide the enclave SDK to run existing SGX programs on HyperEnclave with little or no source code changes. We have implemented HyperEnclave on commodity AMD servers and deployed the system in a world-leading FinTech company to support real-world privacy-preserving computations. The evaluation on both micro-benchmarks and application benchmarks shows the design of HyperEnclave introduces only a small overhead.

Privacy protection and service evaluation methods for location-based services in edge computing environments

This paper proposes a privacy protection and evaluation method for location services based on edge computing environment. By constructing the site service data protection and system evaluation system in the edge computing environment, based on the existing user privacy protection work, the data processing module and service evaluation module are constructed, and the evaluation algorithm is designed. NPE evaluation model and POE evaluation model are designed according to relevant research recommended by IPE. Specifically, in the NPE evaluation model, we regard each user's decision as a group of factors, and propose a method to integrate learning factors. In the poe evaluation model, users' hidden intentions for the next action are understood by unifying metadata information, two time contexts and other different factors. The experiment verifies the effectiveness and feasibility of this method.
