Practical gigahertz quantum key distribution robust against channel disturbance

Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides an attractive solution for secure communication. However, channel disturbance severely limits its application when a QKD system is transfered from the laboratory to the field. Here, a high-speed Faraday-Sagnac-Michelson QKD system is proposed that can automatically compensate for the channel polarization disturbance, which largely avoids the intermittency limitations of environment mutation. Over a 50-km fiber channel with 30-Hz polarization scrambling, the practicality of this phase-coding QKD system was characterized with an interference fringe visibility of 99:35% over 24 hours, and a stable secure key rate of 306k bits/s over 7 days without active polarization alignment.

Analysis and calibration of star sensor's image plane displacement

Star sensor's image plane can have three kinds of displacement after a long time working in space, and the displacements are the principal point drift, incline displacement and rotation displacement. These displacements can severely decrease star sensor's measuring accuracy, therefore it's necessary to analyze and calibrate them. The previous researches have only considered the principal point drift of image plane, which is three-degree-of-freedom. In contrast, the image plane displacements under the rest three degrees of freedom, that are the incline displacement and the rotation displacement, have been modeled in this paper. These two kinds of displacement's influences on star sensor's accuracy have been analyzed. And the necessity to calibrate them has been pointed out. At last, the Extended Kalman Filter has been used to on-orbit calibrate the six-degree-of-freedom image plane displacement. And the simulation results reveal that the on-orbit calibration algorithm can effectively calibrate the image plane displacement of star sensor. The measuring accuracy of star sensor has been increased to 0.23'' after the calibration. Therefore the new six-degree-of-freedom image plane displacement model has made up the deficiency of the conventional displacement model and enhance the performance of star sensor greatly.

Efficient Determination of Equivalence for Encrypted Data

Secure computation of equivalence has fundamental application in many different areas, including healthcare. We study this problem in the context of matching an individual identity to link medical records across systems. We develop an efficient solution for equivalence based on existing work that can evaluate the greater than relation. We implement the approach and demonstrate its effectiveness on data, as well as demonstrate how it meets regulatory criteria for risk.

Controlled-phase manipulation module for orbital-angular-momentum photon states

Phase manipulation is essential to quantum information processing, for which the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photon is a promising high-dimensional resource. Dove prism (DP) is one of the most important element to realize the nondestructive phase manipulation of OAM photons. DP usually changes the polarization of light and thus increases the manipulation error for a spin-OAM hybrid state. DP in a Sagnac interferometer also introduces a mode-dependent global phase to the OAM mode. In this work, we implemented a high-dimensional controlled-phase manipulation module (PMM), which can compensate the mode-dependent global phase and thus preserve the phase in the spin-OAM hybrid superposition state. The PMM is stable for free running and is suitable to realize the high-dimensional controlled-phase gate for spin-OAM hybrid states. Considering the Sagnac-based structure, the PMM is also suitable for classical communication with spin-OAM hybrid light field.

Diagnosing holographic type dark energy models with the Statefinder hierarchy, composite null diagnostic and $w-w'$ pair

The main purpose of this work is to distinguish various holographic type dark energy (DE) models, including the $Λ$HDE, HDE, NADE and RDE model, by using various diagnostic tools. The first diagnostic tool is the Statefinder hierarchy, in which the evolution of Statefinder hierarchy parmeter $S^{(1)}_3(z)$ and $S^{(1)}_4(z)$ are studied. The second is composite null diagnostic (CND), in which the trajectories of $\{S^{(1)}_3, ε\}$ and $\{S^{(1)}_4, ε\}$ are investigated, where $ε$ is the fractional growth parameter. The last is $w-w'$ analysis, where $w$ is the equation of state for DE and the prime denotes derivative with respect to $ln a$. In the analysis we consider two cases: varying current fractional DE density $Ω_{de0}$ and varying DE model parameter $C$. We find that: (1) Both the Statefinder hierarchy and the CND have qualitative impact on $Λ$HDE, but only have quantitative impact on HDE. (2) $S_4^{(1)}$ can lead to larger differences than $S_3^{(1)}$, while the CND pair has a stronger ability to distinguish different models than the Statefinder hierarchy. (3) For the case of varying $C$, the $\{w, w'\}$ pair has qualitative impact on $Λ$HDE; for the case of varying $Ω_{de0}$, the $\{w, w'\}$ pair only has quantitative impact; these results are different from the cases of HDE, RDE and NADE, in which the $\{w, w'\}$ pair only has quantitative impact on these models. In conclusion, compared with HDE, RDE and NADE, the $Λ$HDE model can be easily distinguished by using these diagnostic tools.

A resource-saving realization of the polarization-independent orbital-angular-momentum-preserving tunable beam splitter

Tunable beam splitter (TBS) is a fundamental component which has been widely used in optical experiments. We realize a polarization-independent orbital-angular-momentum-preserving TBS based on the combination of modified polarization beam splitters and half-wave plates. Greater than 30 dB of the extinction ratio of tunableness, lower than $6\%$ of polarization dependence and more than 20 dB of the extinction ratio of OAM preservation show the relatively good performance of the TBS. In addition, the TBS can save about 3/4 of the optical elements compared with the existing scheme to implement the same function\cite{yang2016experimental}, which makes it have great advantages in scalable applications. Using this TBS, we experimentally built a Sagnac interferometer with the mean visibility of more than $99\%$, which demonstrates its potential applications in quantum information process, such as quantum cryptography.

Skeleton-based Action Recognition Using LSTM and CNN

Recent methods based on 3D skeleton data have achieved outstanding performance due to its conciseness, robustness, and view-independent representation. With the development of deep learning, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM)-based learning methods have achieved promising performance for action recognition. However, for CNN-based methods, it is inevitable to loss temporal information when a sequence is encoded into images. In order to capture as much spatial-temporal information as possible, LSTM and CNN are adopted to conduct effective recognition with later score fusion. In addition, experimental results show that the score fusion between CNN and LSTM performs better than that between LSTM and LSTM for the same feature. Our method achieved state-of-the-art results on NTU RGB+D datasets for 3D human action analysis. The proposed method achieved 87.40% in terms of accuracy and ranked $1^{st}$ place in Large Scale 3D Human Activity Analysis Challenge in Depth Videos.

Proof-of-principle experimental realization of a qubit-like qudit-based quantum key distribution scheme

In comparison to qubit-based protocols, qudit-based quantum key distribution (QKD) ones gen- erally allow two cooperative parties to share unconditionally secure keys under a higher channel noise. However, it is very hard to prepare and measure the required quantum states in qudit-based protocols in general. One exception is the recently proposed highly error tolerant qudit-based proto- col known as the Chau15 [1]. Remarkably, the state preparation and measurement in this protocol can be done relatively easily since the required states are phase encoded almost like the diagonal basis states of a qubit. Here we report the first proof-of-principle demonstration of the Chau15 protocol. One highlight of our experiment is that its post-processing is based on practical one-way manner, while the original proposal in Ref. [1] relies on complicated two-way post-processing, which is a great challenge in experiment. In addition, by manipulating time-bin qudit and measurement with a variable delay interferometer, our realization is extensible to qudit with high-dimensionality and confirms the experimental feasibility of the Chau15 protocol.

How Does the Low-Rank Matrix Decomposition Help Internal and External Learnings for Super-Resolution

Wisely utilizing the internal and external learning methods is a new challenge in super-resolution problem. To address this issue, we analyze the attributes of two methodologies and find two observations of their recovered details: 1) they are complementary in both feature space and image plane, 2) they distribute sparsely in the spatial space. These inspire us to propose a low-rank solution which effectively integrates two learning methods and then achieves a superior result. To fit this solution, the internal learning method and the external learning method are tailored to produce multiple preliminary results. Our theoretical analysis and experiment prove that the proposed low-rank solution does not require massive inputs to guarantee the performance, and thereby simplifying the design of two learning methods for the solution. Intensive experiments show the proposed solution improves the single learning method in both qualitative and quantitative assessments. Surprisingly, it shows more superior capability on noisy images and outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

Holographic Dark Energy

We review the paradigm of holographic dark energy (HDE), which arises from a theoretical attempt of applying the holographic principle (HP) to the dark energy (DE) problem. Making use of the HP and the dimensional analysis, we derive the general formula of the energy density of HDE. Then, we describe the properties of HDE model, in which the future event horizon is chosen as the characteristic length scale. We also introduce the theoretical explorations and the observational constraints for this model. Next, in the framework of HDE, we discuss various topics, such as spatial curvature, neutrino, instability of perturbation, time-varying gravitational constant, inflation, black hole and big rip singularity. In addition, from both the theoretical and the observational aspects, we introduce the interacting holographic dark energy scenario, where the interaction between dark matter and HDE is taken into account. Furthermore, we discuss the HDE scenario in various modified gravity (MG) theories, such as Brans-Dicke theory, braneworld theory, scalar-tensor theory, Horava-Lifshitz theory, and so on. Besides, we introduce the attempts of reconstructing various scalar-field DE and MG models from HDE. Moreover, we introduce other DE models inspired by the HP, in which different characteristic length scales are chosen. Finally, we make comparisons among various HP-inspired DE models, by using cosmological observations and diagnostic tools.

Dove prism in single-path Sagnac interferometer for orbital-angular-momentum photon states

The degree of freedom of orbital angular momentum (OAM) is an important resource in high-dimensional quantum information processing, as the quantum number of OAM can be infinite. The Dove prism (DP) is a most common tool to manipulate the OAM light, such as in interferometers. However, the Dove prism does not preserve the polarization of the photon states and decreases the sorting fidelity of the interferometer. In this work, we analyze the polarization-dependent effect of the DP on single-path Sagnac interferometers. The results are instructive to quantum information processing with OAM light. We also proposed a modified single-path beam splitter Sagnac interferometer (BSSI), of which the sorting fidelity is independent on input polarization and can be 100\% in principle. The single-path BSSI is stable for free running. These merits are crucial in quantum information processing, such as quantum cryptography.

Round-robin-differential-phase-shift quantum key distribution with and without monitoring signal disturbance

Round-robin-differential-phase (RRDPS) quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol has attracted intensive studies due to its distinct security characteristic, e.g., information leakage in RRDPS can be bounded without learning error rate of key bits. Nevertheless, its implementation is still far from practical due to the complication of its measurement device. Moreover, on the theoretical side, its security is still not clear in view of optimal attack. Here, by observing a potential phase randomization of the encoding states and its connection with eavesdropper's ancilla, we develop a theory to bound information leakage quite tightly and differently. Our theory is applicable for both with and without monitoring signal disturbance scenarios, which is significant for the understanding of RRDPS. Based on our novel security proof, the practicality and performance of RRDPS can be both improved dramatically. Furthermore, we realize a proof-of-principle experiment up to 140 km fiber distance which is the longest achievable distance of RRDPS system until now, while the original security proof predicts no secret key can be generated in our experiment. Our results pave an avenue towards practical RRDPS.

SAFETY: Secure gwAs in Federated Environment Through a hYbrid solution with Intel SGX and Homomorphic Encryption

Recent studies demonstrate that effective healthcare can benefit from using the human genomic information. For instance, analysis of tumor genomes has revealed 140 genes whose mutations contribute to cancer. As a result, many institutions are using statistical analysis of genomic data, which are mostly based on genome-wide association studies (GWAS). GWAS analyze genome sequence variations in order to identify genetic risk factors for diseases. These studies often require pooling data from different sources together in order to unravel statistical patterns or relationships between genetic variants and diseases. In this case, the primary challenge is to fulfill one major objective: accessing multiple genomic data repositories for collaborative research in a privacy-preserving manner. Due to the sensitivity and privacy concerns regarding the genomic data, multi-jurisdictional laws and policies of cross-border genomic data sharing are enforced among different regions of the world. In this article, we present SAFETY, a hybrid framework, which can securely perform GWAS on federated genomic datasets using homomorphic encryption and recently introduced secure hardware component of Intel Software Guard Extensions (Intel SGX) to ensure high efficiency and privacy at the same time. Different experimental settings show the efficacy and applicability of such hybrid framework in secure conduction of GWAS. To the best of our knowledge, this hybrid use of homomorphic encryption along with Intel SGX is not proposed or experimented to this date. Our proposed framework, SAFETY is up to 4.82 times faster than the best existing secure computation technique.

Exploring the cosmological consequences of JLA supernova data with improved flux-averaging technique

In this work, we explore the cosmological consequences of the "Joint Light-curve Analysis" (JLA) supernova (SN) data by using an improved flux-averaging (FA) technique, in which only the type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) at high redshift are flux-averaged. Adopting the criterion of figure of Merit (FoM) and considering six dark energy (DE) parameterizations, we search the best FA recipe that gives the tightest DE constraints in the $(z_{cut}, Δz)$ plane, where $z_{cut}$ and $Δz$ are redshift cut-off and redshift interval of FA, respectively. Then, based on the best FA recipe obtained, we discuss the impacts of varying $z_{cut}$ and varying $Δz$, revisit the evolution of SN color luminosity parameter $β$, and study the effects of adopting different FA recipe on parameter estimation. We find that: (1) The best FA recipe is $(z_{cut} = 0.6, Δz=0.06)$, which is insensitive to a specific DE parameterization. (2) Flux-averaging JLA samples at $z_{cut} \geq 0.4$ will yield tighter DE constraints than the case without using FA. (3) Using FA can significantly reduce the redshift-evolution of $β$. (4) The best FA recipe favors a larger fractional matter density $Ω_{m}$. In summary, we present an alternative method of dealing with JLA data, which can reduce the systematic uncertainties of SNe Ia and give the tighter DE constraints at the same time. Our method will be useful in the use of SNe Ia data for precision cosmology.

A closer look at the cosmological implications of the $Λ$HDE model

In a previous paper, we proposed a heterotic dark energy model, called $Λ$HDE, in which dark energy is composed of two components: cosmological constant (CC) and holographic dark energy (HDE). The aim of this work is to give a more comprehensive and systematic investigation on the cosmological implications of the $Λ$HDE model. Firstly, we make use of the current observations to constrain the $Λ$HDE model, and compare its cosmology-fit results with the results of the $Λ$CDM and the HDE model. Then, by combining a qualitative theoretical analysis with a quantitative numerical study, we discuss the impact of considering curvature on the cosmic evolutions of fractional HDE density $Ω_{hde}$ and fractional CC density $Ω_Λ$, as well as on the ultimate cosmic fate. Finally, we explore the effects of adopting different types of observational data. We find that: (1) the current observational data cannot distinguish the $Λ$HDE model from the $Λ$CDM and the HDE model; this indicates that DE may contain multiple components. (2) the asymptotic solution of $Ω_{hde}$ and the corresponding cosmic fate in a flat universe can be extended to the case of a non-flat universe; moreover, compared with the case of a flat universe, considering curvature will make HDE closer to a phantom dark energy. (3) compared with JLA dataset, SNLS3 data more favor a phantom type HDE; in contrast, using other types of observational data have no significant impact on the cosmic evolutions of the $Λ$HDE model.

Cosmological implications of different baryon acoustic oscillation data

In this work, we explore the cosmological implications of different baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data, including the BAO data extracted by using the spherically averaged one-dimensional galaxy clustering (GC) statistics (hereafter BAO1) and the BAO data obtained by using the anisotropic two-dimensional GC statistics (hereafter BAO2). To make a comparison, we also take into account the case without BAO data (hereafter NO BAO). Firstly, making use of these BAO data, as well as the SNLS3 type Ia supernovae sample and the Planck distance priors data, we give the cosmological constraints of the $Λ$CDM, the $w$CDM, and the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder (CPL) model. Then, we discuss the impacts of different BAO data on cosmological consquences, including its effects on parameter space, equation of state (EoS), figure of merit (FoM), deceleration-acceleration transition redshift, Hubble parameter $H(z)$, deceleration parameter $q(z)$, statefinder hierarchy $S^{(1)}_3(z)$, $S^{(1)}_4(z)$ and cosmic age $t(z)$. We find that: (1) NO BAO data always give a smallest fractional matter density $Ω_{m0}$, a largest fractional curvature density $Ω_{k0}$ and a largest Hubble constant $h$; in contrast, BAO1 data always give a largest $Ω_{m0}$, a smallest $Ω_{k0}$ and a smallest $h$. (2) For the $w$CDM and the CPL model, NO BAO data always give a largest EoS $w$; in contrast, BAO2 data always give a smallest $w$. (3) Compared with the case of BAO1, BAO2 data always give a slightly larger FoM, and thus can give a cosmological constraint with a slightly better accuracy. (4) The impacts of different BAO data on the cosmic evolution and the comic age are very small, and can not be distinguished by using various dark energy diagnosis and the cosmic age data.

Scalable orbital-angular-momentum sorting without destroying photon states

Single photons with orbital angular momentum (OAM) have attracted substantial attention from researchers. A single photon can carry infinite OAM values theoretically. Thus, OAM photon states have been widely used in quantum information and fundamental quantum mechanics. Although there have been many methods for sorting quantum states with different OAM values, the nondestructive and efficient sorter of high-dimensional OAM remains a fundamental challenge. Here, we propose a scalable OAM sorter which can categorize different OAM states simultaneously, meanwhile, preserving both OAM and spin angular momentum. Fundamental elements of the sorter are composed of symmetric multiport beam splitters (BSs) and Dove prisms with cascading structure, which in principle can be flexibly and effectively combined to sort arbitrarily high-dimensional OAM photons. The scalable structures proposed here greatly reduce the number of BSs required for sorting high-dimensional OAMstates. In view of the nondestructive and extensible features, the sorters can be used as fundamental devices not only for high-dimensional quantum information processing, but also for traditional optics.

Polarization basis tracking scheme for quantum key distribution with revealed sifted key bits

Calibration of the polarization basis between the transmitter and receiver is an important task in quantum key distribution (QKD). An effective polarization-basis tracking scheme will decrease the quantum bit error rate (QBER) and improve the efficiency of a polarization encoding QKD system. In this paper, we proposed a polarization-basis tracking scheme using only unveiled sifted key bits while performing error correction by legitimate users, rather than introducing additional reference light or interrupting the transmission of quantum signals. A polarization-encoding fiber BB84 QKD prototype was developed to examine the validity of this scheme. An average QBER of 2.32% and a standard derivation of 0.87% have been obtained during 24 hours of continuous operation.
