Slim Embedding Layers for Recurrent Neural Language Models

Recurrent neural language models are the state-of-the-art models for language modeling. When the vocabulary size is large, the space taken to store the model parameters becomes the bottleneck for the use of recurrent neural language models. In this paper, we introduce a simple space compression method that randomly shares the structured parameters at both the input and output embedding layers of the recurrent neural language models to significantly reduce the size of model parameters, but still compactly represent the original input and output embedding layers. The method is easy to implement and tune. Experiments on several data sets show that the new method can get similar perplexity and BLEU score results while only using a very tiny fraction of parameters.

Hofstadter point spectrum trace and the Almost Mathieu operator

We consider point spectrum traces in the Hofstadter model. We show how to recover the full quantum Hofstadter trace by integrating these point spectrum traces with the appropriate free density of states on the lattice. This construction is then generalized to the almost Mathieu operator and its n-th moments which can be expressed in terms of generalized Kreft coefficients.

Young's double-slit interference with two-color biphotons

In classical optics, Young's double-slit experiment with colored coherent light gives rise to individual interference fringes for each light frequency, referring to single-photon interference. However, two-photon double-slit interference has been widely studied only for wavelength-degenerate biphoton, known as subwavelength quantum lithography. In this work, we report double-slit interference experiments with two-color biphoton. Different from the degenerate case, the experimental results depend on the measurement methods. From a two-axis coincidence measurement pattern we can extract complete interference information about two colors. The conceptual model provides an intuitional picture of the in-phase and out-of-phase photon correlations and a complete quantum understanding about the which-path information of two colored photons.

Optimal Scheduling of Multiple Sensors with Packet Length Constraint

This paper considers the problem of sensory data scheduling of multiple processes. There are $n$ independent linear time-invariant processes and a remote estimator monitoring all the processes. Each process is measured by a sensor, which sends its local state estimate to the remote estimator. The sizes of the packets are different due to different dimensions of each process, and thus it may take different lengths of time steps for the sensors to send their data. Because of bandwidth limitation, only a portion of all the sensors are allowed to transmit. Our goal is to minimize the average of estimation error covariance of the whole system at the remote estimator. The problem is formulated as a Markov decision process (MDP) with average cost over an infinite time horizon. We prove the existence of a deterministic and stationary policy for the problem. We also find that the optimal policy has a consistent behavior and threshold type structure. A numerical example is provided to illustrate our main results.

Short-Channel Field Effect Transistors with 9-Atom and 13-Atom wide Graphene Nanoribbons

Bottom-up synthesized GNRs and GNR heterostructures have promising electronic properties for high performance field effect transistors (FETs) and ultra-low power devices such as tunnelling FETs. However, the short length and wide band gap of these GNRs have prevented the fabrication of devices with the desired performance and switching behaviour. Here, by fabricating short channel (Lch ~20 nm) devices with a thin, high-k gate dielectric and a 9-atom wide (0.95 nm) armchair GNR as the channel material, we demonstrate FETs with high on-current (Ion >1 uA at Vd = -1 V) and high Ion/Ioff ~10^5 at room temperature. We find that the performance of these devices is limited by tunnelling through the Schottky barrier (SB) at the contacts and we observe an increase in the transparency of the barrier by increasing the gate field near the contacts. Our results thus demonstrate successful fabrication of high performance short-channel FETs with bottom-up synthesized armchair GNRs.

On the algebraic area of lattice walks and the Hofstadter model

We consider the generating function of the algebraic area of lattice walks, evaluated at a root of unity, and its relation to the Hofstadter model. In particular, we obtain an expression for the generating function of the n-th moments of the Hofstadter Hamiltonian in terms of a complete elliptic integral, evaluated at a rational function. This in turn gives us both exact and asymptotic formulas for these moments.

Numerical study of magnetic and pairing correlation in bilayer triangular lattice

By using the determinant Quantum Monte Carlo method, the magnetic and pairing correlation of the Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot$yH$_{2}$O system are studied within the Hubbard model on a bilayer triangular lattice. The temperature dependence of spin correlation function and pairing susceptibility with several kinds of symmetries at different electron fillings and inter layer coupling terms are investigated. It is found that the system shows an antiferromagnetic correlation around the half filling, and the $fn$-wave pairing correlation dominates over other kinds of pairing symmetry in the low doping region. As the electron filling decreases away from the half filling, both the ferromagnetic correlation and the $f$-wave paring susceptibility are enhanced and tend to dominate. It is also shown that both the magnetic susceptibility and paring susceptibility decrease as the inter layer coupling increases.
