A Dielectric Metasurface Optical Chip for the Generation of Cold Atoms

Compact and robust cold atom sources are increasingly important for quantum research, especially for transferring cutting-edge quantum science into practical applications. In this letter, we report on a novel scheme that utilizes a metasurface optical chip to replace the conventional bulky optical elements used to produce a cold atomic ensemble with a single incident laser beam, which is split by the metasurface into multiple beams of the desired polarization states. Atom numbers $~10^7$ and temperatures (about 35 $μ$K) of relevance to quantum sensing are achieved in a compact and robust fashion. Our work highlights the substantial progress towards fully integrated cold atom quantum devices by exploiting metasurface optical chips, which may have great potential in quantum sensing, quantum computing and other areas.

Imaging through nonlinear metalens using second harmonic generation

The abrupt phase change of light at metasurfaces provides high flexibility in wave manipulation without the need of accumulation of propagating phase through dispersive materials. In the linear optical regime, one important application field of metasurfaces is imaging by planar metalenses, which enables device miniaturization and aberration correction compared to conventional optical microlens systems. With the incorporation of nonlinear responses into passive metasurfaces, optical functionalities of metalenses are anticipated to be further enriched, leading to completely new applications areas. Here, we demonstrate imaging with nonlinear metalenses that combine the function of an ultrathin planar lens with simultaneous frequency conversion. With such nonlinear metalenses, we experimentally demonstrate imaging of objects with near infrared light while the image appears in the second harmonic signal of visible frequency range. Furthermore, the functionality of these nonlinear metalenses can be modified by switching the handedness of the circularly polarized fundamental wave, leading to either real or virtual nonlinear image formation. Nonlinear metalenses do not only enable infrared light imaging through a visible detector but also have the ability to modulate nonlinear optical responses through an ultrathin metasurface device while the fundamental wave remains unaffected, which offers the capability of nonlinear information processing with novel optoelectronic devices.

Holographic Complexity Growth Rate in a dual FLRW Universe

In this paper, taking the large $R$ limit and using the complexity-volume duality, we investigate the holographic complexity growth rate of a field state defined on the universe located at an asymptotical AdS boundary in Gauss-Bonnet gravity and massive gravity, respectively. For the Gauss-Bonnet gravity case, its growth behavior of the state mainly presents three kinds of contributions: one, as a finite term viewed as an interaction term, comes from a conserved charge, the second one is from the spatial volume of the universe and the third one relates the curvature of the horizon in the AdS Gauss-Bonnet black hole, where the Gauss-Bonnet effect plays a vital role on such growth rate. For massive gravity case, except the first divergent term still obeying the growth rate of the spatial volume of the Universe, its results reveal the more interesting novel phenomenons: beside the conserved charge $E$, the graviton mass term also provides its effect to the finite term; and the third divergent term is determined by the spatial curvature of its horizon $k$ and graviton mass effect; furthermore, the graviton mass effect can be completely responsible for the second divergent term as a new additional term saturating an area law.

Observation of non-Abelian nodal links in photonics

In crystals, two bands may cross each other and form degeneracies along a closed loop in the three-dimensional momentum space, which is called nodal line. Nodal line degeneracy can be designed to exhibit various configurations such as nodal rings, chains, links and knots. Very recently, non-Abelian band topology was proposed in nodal link systems, where the nodal lines formed by consecutive pairs of bands exhibit interesting braiding structures and the underlying topological charges are described by quaternions. Here, we experimentally demonstrate non-Abelian nodal links in a biaxial hyperbolic metamaterial. The linked nodal lines threading through each other are formed by the crossings between three adjacent bands. Based on the non-Abelian charges, we further analyze various admissible nodal link configurations for the three-band system. On the interface between the metamaterial and air, surface bound states in the continuum (BICs) are observed, which serves as the symmetry-enforced derivative of drumhead surface states from the linked nodal lines. Our work serves as a direct observation of the global topological structures of nodal links, and provides a platform for studying non-Abelian topological charge in the momentum space.

$\ell_0$-Regularized High-dimensional Accelerated Failure Time Model

We develop a constructive approach for $\ell_0$-penalized estimation in the sparse accelerated failure time (AFT) model with high-dimensional covariates. Our proposed method is based on Stute's weighted least squares criterion combined with $\ell_0$-penalization. This method is a computational algorithm that generates a sequence of solutions iteratively, based on active sets derived from primal and dual information and root finding according to the KKT conditions. We refer to the proposed method as AFT-SDAR (for support detection and root finding). An important aspect of our theoretical results is that we directly concern the sequence of solutions generated based on the AFT-SDAR algorithm. We prove that the estimation errors of the solution sequence decay exponentially to the optimal error bound with high probability, as long as the covariate matrix satisfies a mild regularity condition which is necessary and sufficient for model identification even in the setting of high-dimensional linear regression. We also proposed an adaptive version of AFT-SDAR, or AFT-ASDAR, which determines the support size of the estimated coefficient in a data-driven fashion. We conduct simulation studies to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method over the lasso and MCP in terms of accuracy and speed. We also apply the proposed method to a real data set to illustrate its application.

Quasi-parallel X-ray microbeam obtained using a parabolic monocapillary X-ray lens with an embedded square-shaped lead occluder

A parabolic monocapillary X-ray lens (PMXRL) is designed to effectively constrain a laboratory point X-ray source into a parallel beam. A square-shaped lead occluder (SSLO) is used to block direct X-rays in the PMXRL. To design the PMXRL, we use Python to simulate the conic parameter (p = 0.001 mm) of the lens and then use a drawing machine to draw a corresponding lens (p = 0.000939 mm) with a total length of 60.8 mm. We place the SSLO at the lens inlet for optical testing. The results show that the controlled outgoing beam has a divergence of less than 0.4 mrad in the range of 15-45 mm of the lens outlet, which achieves excellent optical performance in X-ray imaging methodology. The design details are reported in this paper.

Observation of an exceptional point in a non-Hermitian metasurface

Exceptional points, also known as non-Hermitian degeneracies, have been observed in parity-time symmetric metasurfaces as the parity-time symmetry breaking point. However, the parity-time symmetry condition puts constraints on the metasurface parameter space, excluding full examination of the unique properties that stem from an exceptional point. Here, we thus design a general non-Hermitian metasurface with a unit cell containing two orthogonally oriented split-ring-resonators with overlapping resonance but different scattering rates and radiation efficiencies. Such a design grants us full access to the parameter space around the exceptional point. The parameter space around the exceptional point is first examined by varying the incident radiation frequency and coupling between split-ring resonators. We further demonstrate that the exceptional point is also observable by varying the incident radiation frequency along with the incident angle. Through both methods we validate the existence of an exceptional point by observing unique level crossing behavior, eigenstate swapping under encirclement and asymmetric transmission of circularly polarized light.

Deep Motion Blur Removal Using Noisy/Blurry Image Pairs

Removing spatially variant motion blur from a blurry image is a challenging problem as blur sources are complicated and difficult to model accurately. Recent progress in deep neural networks suggests that kernel free single image deblurring can be efficiently performed, but questions about deblurring performance persist. Thus, we propose to restore a sharp image by fusing a pair of noisy/blurry images captured in a burst. Two neural network structures, DeblurRNN and DeblurMerger, are presented to exploit the pair of images in a sequential manner or parallel manner. To boost the training, gradient loss, adversarial loss and spectral normalization are leveraged. The training dataset that consists of pairs of noisy/blurry images and the corresponding ground truth sharp image is synthesized based on the benchmark dataset GOPRO. We evaluated the trained networks on a variety of synthetic datasets and real image pairs. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Disorder-immune photonics based on Mie-resonant dielectric metamaterials

When the feature size of photonic structures becomes comparable or even smaller than the wavelength of light, the fabrication imperfections inevitably introduce disorder that may eliminate many functionalities of subwavelength photonic devices. Here we suggest a novel concept to achieve a robust bandgap which can endure disorder beyond 30 as a result of the transition from photonic crystals to Mie-resonant metamaterials. By utilizing Mie-resonant metamaterials with high refractive index, we demonstrate photonic waveguides and cavities with strong robustness to position disorder, thus providing a novel approach to the bandgap-based nanophotonic devices with new properties and functionalities.

Transverse photon spin beyond interfaces

Photons possess spin degree of freedom, corresponding to clockwise and counter clockwise rotating direction of the fields. Photon spin plays an important role in various applications such as optical communications, information processing and sensing. In conventional isotropic media, photon spin is aligned with the propagation direction of light, obeying spin momentum locking. Interestingly, at certain interfaces, the surface waves decaying away from the interface possess a photon spin transverse to its propagation, opening exciting opportunities for observation of spin dependent unidirectional excitation in confined systems. Here we propose and realize transverse photon spin (T-spin) in the interior of a bulk medium, without relying on the presence of any interfaces. We show the complete mapping of the T-spin of surface modes to that of the bulk modes by introducing the coupling between electric and magnetic responses along orthogonal directions, i.e., the bianisotropy, into the medium. We further discover that an interface formed by two bianisotropic media of opposite orientations supports edge-dependent propagating modes with tunable cutoff frequencies. Our results provide a new platform for manipulating the spin orbit interaction of electromagnetic waves.

Metasurface holography: from fundamentals to applications

Holography has emerged as a vital approach to fully engineer the wavefronts of light since its invention dating back to the last century. However, the typically large pixel size, small field of view and limited space-bandwidth impose limitations in the on-demand high-performance applications, especially for three-dimensional displays and large-capacity data storage. Meanwhile, metasurfaces have shown great potential in controlling the propagation of light through the well-tailored scattering behavior of the constituent ultrathin planar elements with a high spatial resolution, making them suitable for holographic beam-shaping elements. Here, we review recent developments in the field of metasurface holography, from the classification of metasurfaces to the design strategies for both free-space and surface waves. By employing the concepts of holographic multiplexing, multiple information channels, such as wavelength, polarization state, spatial position and nonlinear frequency conversion, can be employed using metasurfaces. Meanwhile, the switchable metasurface holography by the integration of functional materials stimulates a gradual transition from passive to active elements. Importantly, the holography principle has become a universal and simple approach to solving inverse engineering problems for electromagnetic waves, thus allowing various related techniques to be achieved.

GAN Based Image Deblurring Using Dark Channel Prior

A conditional general adversarial network (GAN) is proposed for image deblurring problem. It is tailored for image deblurring instead of just applying GAN on the deblurring problem. Motivated by that, dark channel prior is carefully picked to be incorporated into the loss function for network training. To make it more compatible with neuron networks, its original indifferentiable form is discarded and L2 norm is adopted instead. On both synthetic datasets and noisy natural images, the proposed network shows improved deblurring performance and robustness to image noise qualitatively and quantitatively. Additionally, compared to the existing end-to-end deblurring networks, our network structure is light-weight, which ensures less training and testing time.

Extremely broadband topological surface states in a photonic topological metamaterials

Metamaterials, artificially engineered materials consisting of subwavelength unit cell, have shown potentials in light manipulation with their extraordinary optical properties. Especially, topological metamaterials possessing topologically protected surface states enable extremely robust control of light. Here, we demonstrate extremely broadband topological phase in a photonic topological metamaterials with double helix structure. In particular topological surface states are observed for all the frequencies below a certain cut-off, originating from a double Weyl point at zero frequency. The extreme bandwidth and robustness of the photonic topological metamaterial are beneficial for practical applications such as one-way waveguide and photonic integrated systems but also advantageous in design and fabrication since the only necessary condition is to satisfy the effective hyperbolic and chiral properties, without entailing strict periodic arrangement.

Symmetry selective Dynamic Casimir Effect in One-Dimensional Photonic Crystals

Real photon pairs can be created in a dynamic cavity with periodically modulated refractive index of the constituent media or oscillating boundaries. This effect is called Dynamic Casimir effect (DCE), which represents one of the most amazing predictions of quantum field theory. Here, we investigate DCE in a dynamic one-dimensional photonic crystal system with both temporal and spatial modulation of the refractive index profile. Such a system can resonantly generate photons at driving frequencies equal to even or odd integer times of that of the fundamental cavity mode governed by the symmetry of the spatial modulation. We further observe interesting spectral and scaling behaviors for photons excited at the band edge. Our discovery introduces a new degree of freedom to enhance the efficiency of DCE.

Inertia Sensor Aided Alignment for Burst Pipeline in Low Light Conditions

Merging short-exposure frames can provide an image with reduced noise in low light conditions. However, how best to align images before merging is an open problem. To improve the performance of alignment, we propose an inertia-sensor aided algorithm for smartphone burst photography, which takes rotation and out-plane relative movement into account. To calculate homography between frames, a three by three rotation matrix is calculated from gyro data recorded by smartphone inertia sensor and three-dimensional translation vector are estimated by matched feature points detected from two frames. The rotation matrix and translations are combined to form the initial guess of homography. An unscented Kalman filter is utilized to provide a more accurate homography estimation. We have tested the algorithm on a variety of different scenes with different camera relative motions. We compare the proposed method to benchmark single-image and multi-image denoising methods with favorable results.

Observation of Three-dimensional Photonic Dirac points and Spin-polarized Surface Arcs

Topological phases arise from the elegant mathematical structures imposed by the interplay between symmetry and topology1-5. From gapped topological insulators to gapless semimetals, topological materials in both quantum and classical systems, have grown rapidly in the last decade. Among them, three-dimensional Dirac semimetal lies at the topological phase transition point between various topological phases. It shares multiple exotic topological features with other topological materials, such as Fermi arcs and chiral anomaly with Weyl semimetals30, spin-dependent surface states with topological insulators29. In spite of the important role it plays in topological physics, no experimental observation of three-dimension Dirac points has been reported in classical systems so far. Here, we experimentally demonstrate three-dimension photonic Dirac points in an elaborately designed photonic metamaterial, in which two symmetrically placed Dirac points are stabilized by electromagnetic duality symmetry31. Spin-polarized surface arcs (counterparts of Fermi arcs in electronic systems) are demonstrated, which paves the way towards spin-multiplexed topological surface wave propagation. Closely linked to other exotic states through topological phase transitions, our system offers an effective medium platform for topological photonics.

Large Chiroptical Effects in Planar Chiral Metamaterials

Chiroptical effects, characterized by different optical responses for left- (LCP) and right- handed circularly polarized light (RCP), are powerful and valuable tools in optics with wide applications in polarization resolved imaging and sensing. Previously observed strong chiroptical effects are limited to metamaterials with complex three-dimensional chiral structures at the sub-wavelength scale. Although asymmetrical transmission of LCP and RCP have been investigated in planar chiral metasurfaces, the observed weak chiroptical effects result from anisotropic Ohmic dissipation of the metal constituents. Here, we demonstrate by theory and proof-of-concept experiments that large difference in transmittances of LCP and RCP can be attained in a single-layer planar chiral metamaterial with a sub-wavelength thickness. Without violating the reciprocity and mirror symmetry, the strong chiroptical effect, independent of dielectric loss, arise from a novel mechanism of multimode interference. The described effect may lead to new gateway towards chiral manipulations of light and chiral optical devices.

Purely infinite corona algebras

Let A be a simple, sigma-unital, non-unital C*-algebra, with metrizable tracial simplex T(A), which is projection-surjective and injective and has strict comparison of positive elements by traces. Then the following are equivalent: (i) A has quasicontinuous scale; (ii) The multiplier algebra M(A) has strict comparison of positive elements by traces; (iii) The coronal algebra M(A)/A is purely infinite; (iii') The quotient M(A)/Imin is purely infinite; (iv) M(A) has finitely many ideals; (v) Imin=Ifin. If furthermore algebra of n by n matrices of A is projection-surjective and injective for every n, then the above conditions are equivalent to: (vi) the monoid V(M(A)) has finitely many order ideals. Quasicontinuity of the scale is a notion introduced by Kucerovsky and Perera that extends both the property of having finitely many extremal traces and of having continuous scale. Projection-surjectivity and injectivity permit to identify projections in M(A) that are not in A with lower semicontinuous affine functions on T(A). Imin is the smallest ideal of M(A) properly containing A, and Ifin is the ideal of of M(A) generated by the positive elements with evaluation functions finite over the extremal boundary of T(A).
