On a free boundary problem of the Boltzmann equation

This paper studies a free boundary problem for the Boltzmann equation that models the interaction of rarefied gas with a moving wall---a classical piston problem in kinetic theory. The piston motion is governed by Newton's law under the drag force exerted by the gas, with or without an additional Hookean restoring force. A central challenge for such a problem is the strong coupling between the kinetic equation and the free moving boundary, for which the classical Lagrangian formulation is unavailable due to low-regularity of solutions. Our approach relies on two new ingredients: a conformal transformation is introduced to reduce the moving domain to a fixed domain, and a coupled energy structure linking the kinetic distribution and free boundary variables is uncovered to reveal intrinsic dissipation and cancellation mechanisms at the interface. These structural observations lead to a global nonlinear theory for the fully coupled system. As a result, we establish the global existence, uniqueness, nonlinear stability, and exponential convergence to equilibrium of solutions near a global Maxwellian. This provides the first rigorous global well-posedness theory for a fully coupled Boltzmann free boundary problem of piston type.

Time-periodic solutions of the Boltzmann equation with soft potentials in $\mathbb{R}^3$

We establish the existence of time-periodic solutions to the Boltzmann equation for the full range of soft potentials and prove their global stability. The proof relies on refined energy estimates combining Besov and Sobolev regularity with velocity-weighted energy methods. The analysis is complicated by the lack of a spectral gap in the soft potential regime together with the absence of time integrability of the periodic forcing over $\mathbb{R}^+$. This provides a framework for the study of time-periodic behavior for the Boltzmann equation.

Low-regularity global well-posedness for the Boltzmann equation near vacuum

We study the Boltzmann equation near vacuum in anisotropic low-regularity Besov spaces. We establish the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions with the critical regularity index $2/p$ for $p\in[1,\infty)$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$. The proof relies on a new bilinear estimate for the nonlinear collision operator. Combined with a div-curl type lemma we develop, this allows us to close the a priori estimates and thereby obtain global well-posedness.

The Boltzmann equation in an infinite layer: spectrum and asymptotics toward the heat equation

In the paper, we develop spectral theory to analyze the sharp asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Boltzmann equation around global Maxwellians in a three-dimensional infinite layer $\mathbb{R}^2\times (-1,1)$. The isothermal diffuse reflection boundary condition is imposed on two parallel infinite planes at $x_3=\pm 1$. The main difficulties lie in the fact that the direct Fourier transform is not applicable to the vertical $x_3$-variable, and the linear collision operator $K$ loses its compactness on $L^2((-1,1)\times \R^3_v)$ although it is compact on $L^2(\R^3_v)$. By introducing a regularization operator $K_n$ via the finite-dimensional Fourier series truncation in $L^2(-1,1)$, we study the spectrum of the linearized initial-boundary value approximation problem, establish the resolvent estimates, and identify the leading diffusive eigenvalue. This spectral structure governs the sharp asymptotic dynamics of the original linear problem as $n\to \infty$, enabling us to construct the large-time behavior for the nonlinear problem and rigorously prove that the solution converges with a faster rate toward that of the two-dimensional heat equation in the horizontal direction.

The non-cutoff Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system with weak collisions

We prove global existence of smooth solutions near Maxwellians for the non-cutoff Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system in the weakly collisional regime. To address the weak dissipation of the non-cutoff linearized Boltzmann operator, we develop a refined velocity-weighted energy framework combined with vector-field techniques to control the transport term, nonlinear collisions, and the self-consistent electric field. This approach yields uniform-in-time bounds, captures enhanced dissipation of the solution, and establishes Landau damping for both the density and electric field, providing the first global-in-time result of this type for the non-cutoff Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system. Our approach is inspired by the recent work of Chaturvedi-Luk-Nguyen ({\it J. Amer. Math. Soc.} {\bf 36} (2023), no. 4, 1103--1189.)

Global stability of the inhomogeneous sheared Boltzmann equation in torus

Homo-energetic solutions to the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation have been extensively studied, but their global stability in the inhomogeneous setting remains challenging due to unbounded energy growth under self-similar scaling and the intricate interplay between spatial dependence and nonlinear collision dynamics. In this paper, we introduce an approach for periodic spatial domains to construct global-in-time inhomogeneous solutions in a non-conservative perturbation framework, characterizing the global dynamics of growing energy. The growth of energy is shown to be governed by a long-time limit state that exhibits features not captured in either the homogeneous case or the classical Boltzmann theory. The core of our proof is the derivation of new energy estimates specific to the Maxwell molecule model. These estimates combine three key ingredients: a low-high frequency decomposition, a spectral analysis of the matrix associated with the second-order moment equation, and a crucial cancellation property in the zero-frequency mode of the nonlinear collision term. This last property bears a close analogy to the null condition in nonlinear wave equations.

Global mild solution with polynomial tail for the Boltzmann equation in the whole space

We are concerned with the Cauchy problem on the Boltzmann equation in the whole space. The goal is to construct global-in-time bounded mild solutions near Maxwellians with the perturbation admitting a polynomial tail in large velocities. The proof is based on the Caflisch's decomposition together with the $L^2- L^\infty$ interplay technique developed by Guo. The full range of both hard and soft potentials under the Grad's cutoff assumption can be covered. The main difficulty to be overcome in case of the whole space is the polynomial time decay of solutions which is much slower than the exponential rate in contrast with the torus case.

The 3D kinetic Couette flow via the Boltzmann equation in the diffusive limit

In the paper we study the Boltzmann equation in the diffusive limit in a channel domain $\mathbb{T}^2\times (-1,1)$ for the 3D kinetic Couette flow. Our results demonstrate that the first-order approximation of the solutions is governed by the perturbed incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system around the fluid Couette flow. Moverover, in the absence of external forces, the 3D kinetic Couette flow asymptotically converges over time to the 1D steady planar kinetic Couette flow. Our proof relies on (i) the Fourier transform on $\mathbb{T}^2$ to essentially reduce the 3D problem to a one-dimensional one, (ii) anisotropic Chemin-Lerner type function spaces, incorporating the Wiener algebra, to control nonlinear terms and address the singularity associated with a small Knudsen number in the diffusive limit, and (iii) Caflisch's decomposition, combined with the $L^2\cap L^\infty$ interplay technique, to manage the growth of large velocities.

The spatially inhomogeneous Vlasov-Nordström-Fokker-Planck system in the intrinsic weak diffusion regime

The spatially homogeneous Vlasov-Nordström-Fokker-Planck system is known to exhibit nontrivial large time behavior, naturally leading to weak diffusion of the Fokker-Planck operator. This weak diffusion, combined with the singularity of relativistic velocity, present a significant challenge in analysis for the spatially inhomogeneous counterpart. In this paper, we demonstrate that the Cauchy problem for the spatially inhomogeneous Vlasov-Nordström-Fokker-Planck system, without friction, maintains dynamically stable relative to the corresponding spatially homogeneous system. Our results are twofold: (1) we establish the existence of a unique global classical solution and characterize the asymptotic behavior of the spatially inhomogeneous system using a refined weighted energy method; (2) we directly verify the dynamic stability of the spatially inhomogeneous system in the framework of self-similar solutions.

Global Hilbert expansion for some non-relativistic kinetic equations

The Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau (VML) system and the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann (VMB) system are fundamental models in dilute collisional plasmas. In this paper, we are concerned with the hydrodynamic limits of both the VML and the non-cutoff VMB systems in the entire space. Our primary objective is to rigorously prove that, within the framework of Hilbert expansion, the unique classical solution of the VML or non-cutoff VMB system converges globally over time to the smooth global solution of the Euler-Maxwell system as the Knudsen number approaches zero. The core of our analysis hinges on deriving novel interplay energy estimates for the solutions of these two systems, concerning both a local Maxwellian and a global Maxwellian, respectively. Our findings address a problem in the hydrodynamic limit for Landau-type equations and non-cutoff Boltzmann-type equations with a magnetic field. Furthermore, the approach developed in this paper can be seamlessly extended to assess the validity of the Hilbert expansion for other types of kinetic equations.

Uniform shear flow via the Boltzmann equation with hard potentials

The motion of rarefied gases for uniform shear flow at the kinetic level is governed by the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with a deformation force. In the paper we study the corresponding Cauchy problem with initial data of finite mass and energy for the collision kernel in case of hard potentials $0<γ\leq 1$ under the cutoff assumption. We prove the global existence and large time behavior of solutions provided that the force strength $α>0$ is small enough. In particular, when the initial perturbation is of order $α^m$ for $m>2$, we make a rigorous justification of the uniform-in-time asymptotic expansion of solutions up to order $α^2$ under a homoenergetic self-similar scaling that can capture the increase of temperature $θ(t)\sim (1+γ\varrho_0α^2 t)^{2/γ}$ when time tends to infinity, where $\varrho_0>0$ is a strictly positive constant depending only on the deformation force and the linearized collision operator. Specifically, we establish $$ θ^{3/2}(t)F(t,θ^{1/2}(t)v)= μ+α\sqrtμ G_1(t,v)+α^2 \sqrtμG_2(t,v)+O(1)α^m(1+γ\varrho_0α^2 t)^{-2} $$ as $t\to\infty$, where $μ$ is a global Maxwellian and $G_1,G_2$ are microscopic bounded functions that can be explicitly determined and decay in time as $G_1\sim (1+γ\varrho_0α^2 t)^{-1}$ and $G_2\sim (1+γ\varrho_0α^2 t)^{-2}$.

Hilbert expansion for kinetic equations with non-relativistic Coulomb collision

In this paper, we study the hydrodynamic limits of both the Landau equation and the Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau system in the whole space. Our main purpose is two-fold: the first one is to give a rigorous derivation of the compressible Euler equations from the Landau equation via the Hilbert expansion; while the second one is to prove, still in the setting of Hilbert expansion, that the unique classical solution of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau system converges, which is shown to be globally in time, to the resulting global smooth solution of the Euler-Maxwell system, as the Knudsen number goes to zero. The main ingredient of our analysis is to derive some novel interplay energy estimates on the solutions of the Landau equation and the Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau system which are small perturbations of both a local Maxwellian and a global Maxwellian, respectively. Our result solves an open problem in the hydrodynamic limit for the Landau-type equations with Coulomb potential and the approach developed in this paper can seamlessly be used to deal with the problem on the validity of the Hilbert expansion for other types of kinetic equations.

Heat transfer problem for the Boltzmann equation in a channel with diffusive boundary condition

In this paper, we study the 1D steady Boltzmann flow in a channel. The walls of the channel are assumed to have vanishing velocity and given temperatures $θ_0$ and $θ_1$. This problem was studied by Esposito et al [13,14] where they showed that the solution tends to a local Maxwellian with parameters satisfying the compressible Navier-Stokes equation with no-slip boundary condition. However, a lot of numerical experiments reveal that the fluid layer does not entirely stick to the boundary. In the regime where the Knudsen number is reasonably small, the slip phenomenon is significant near the boundary. Thus, we revisit this problem by taking into account the slip boundary conditions. Following the lines of [9], we will first give a formal asymptotic analysis to see that the flow governed by the Boltzmann equation is accurately approximated by a superposition of a steady CNS equation with a temperature jump condition and two Knudsen layers located at end points. Then we will establish a uniform $L^\infty$ estimate on the remainder and derive the slip boundary condition for compressible Navier-Stokes equations rigorously.

On smooth solutions to the thermostated Boltzmann equation with deformation

This paper concerns a kinetic model of the thermostated Boltzmann equation with a linear deformation force described by a constant matrix. The collision kernel under consideration includes both the Maxwell molecule and general hard potentials with angular cutoff. We construct the smooth steady solutions via a perturbation approach when the deformation strength is sufficiently small. The steady solution is a spatially homogeneous non Maxwellian state and may have the polynomial tail at large velocities. Moreover, we also establish the long time asymptotics toward steady states for the Cauchy problem on the corresponding spatially inhomogeneous equation in torus, which in turn gives the non-negativity of steady solutions.

The Boltzmann equation for plane Couette flow

In the paper, we study the plane Couette flow of a rarefied gas between two parallel infinite plates at $y=\pm L$ moving relative to each other with opposite velocities $(\pm αL,0,0)$ along the $x$-direction. Assuming that the stationary state takes the specific form of $F(y,v_x-αy,v_y,v_z)$ with the $x$-component of the molecular velocity sheared linearly along the $y$-direction, such steady flow is governed by a boundary value problem on a steady nonlinear Boltzmann equation driven by an external shear force under the homogeneous non-moving diffuse reflection boundary condition. In case of the Maxwell molecule collisions, we establish the existence of spatially inhomogeneous non-equilibrium stationary solutions to the steady problem for any small enough shear rate $α>0$ via an elaborate perturbation approach using Caflisch's decomposition together with Guo's $L^\infty\cap L^2$ theory. The result indicates the polynomial tail at large velocities for the stationary distribution. Moreover, the large time asymptotic stability of the stationary solution with an exponential convergence is also obtained and as a consequence the nonnegativity of the steady profile is justified.

Compressible Navier-Stokes approximation for the Boltzmann equation in bounded domains

It is well known that the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations can be deduced via the Chapman-Enskog expansion from the Boltzmann equation as the first-order correction to the Euler equations with viscosity and heat-conductivity coefficients of order of the Knudsen number $ε>0$. In the paper, we carry out the rigorous mathematical analysis of the compressible Navier-Stokes approximation for the Boltzmann equation regarding the initial-boundary value problems in general bounded domains. The main goal is to measure the uniform-in-time deviation of the Boltzmann solution with diffusive reflection boundary condition from a local Maxwellian with its fluid quantities given by the solutions to the corresponding compressible Navier-Stokes equations with consistent non-slip boundary conditions whenever $ε>0$ is small enough. Specifically, it is shown that for well chosen initial data around constant equilibrium states, the deviation weighted by a velocity function is $O(ε^{1/2})$ in $L^\infty_{x,v}$ and $O(ε^{3/2})$ in $L^2_{x,v}$ globally in time. The proof is based on the uniform estimates for the remainder in different functional spaces without any spatial regularity. One key step is to obtain the global-in-time existence as well as uniform-in-$ε$ estimates for regular solutions to the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations in bounded domains when the parameter $ε>0$ is involved in the analysis.

The Boltzmann equation for uniform shear flow

The uniform shear flow for the rarefied gas is governed by the time-dependent spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with a linear shear force. The main feature of such flow is that the temperature may increase in time due to the shearing motion that induces viscous heat and the system becomes far from equilibrium. For Maxwell molecules, we establish the unique existence, regularity, shear-rate-dependent structure and non-negativity of self-similar profiles for any small shear rate. The non-negativity is justified through the large time asymptotic stability even in spatially inhomogeneous perturbation framework, and the exponential rates of convergence are also obtained with the size proportional to the second order shear rate. The analysis supports the numerical result that the self-similar profile admits an algebraic high-velocity tail that is the key difficulty to overcome in the proof.

Global mild solutions of the Landau and non-cutoff Boltzmann equations

This paper proves the existence of small-amplitude global-in-time unique mild solutions to both the Landau equation including the Coulomb potential and the Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. Since the well-known works (Guo, 2002) and (Gressman-Strain-2011, AMUXY-2012) on the construction of classical solutions in smooth Sobolev spaces which in particular are regular in the spatial variables, it still remains an open problem to obtain global solutions in an $L^\infty_{x,v}$ framework, similar to that in (Guo-2010), for the Boltzmann equation with cutoff in general bounded domains. One main difficulty arises from the interaction between the transport operator and the velocity-diffusion-type collision operator in the non-cutoff Boltzmann and Landau equations; another major difficulty is the potential formation of singularities for solutions to the boundary value problem. In the present work we introduce a new function space with low regularity in the spatial variable to treat the problem in cases when the spatial domain is either a torus, or a finite channel with boundary. For the latter case, either the inflow boundary condition or the specular reflection boundary condition is considered. An important property of the function space is that the $L^\infty_T L^2_v$ norm, in velocity and time, of the distribution function is in the Wiener algebra $A(Ω)$ in the spatial variables. Besides the construction of global solutions in these function spaces, we additionally study the large-time behavior of solutions for both hard and soft potentials, and we further justify the property of propagation of regularity of solutions in the spatial variables.
