Programmable superconducting neuron with intrinsic in-memory computation and dual-timescale plasticity for ultra-efficient neuromorphic computing

The escalating energy demands of artificial intelligence pose a critical challenge to conventional computing. Leveraging the efficiency of event-driven, in-memory neuromorphic architectures into the superconducting circuits with ultra-high speed and low power dissipation advantages offers a promising solution to energy-efficient computing. However, the potential of such a solution has yet to be realized, owning to the absence of a fundamental superconducting unit that unifies programmability, local memory, and multi-timescale plasticity. Here, we introduce a programmable Josephson-junction-based leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) neuron that features intrinsic static memory and precise programmability by encoding somatic and synaptic parameters directly in the bias current. This neuron is also capable of dual-timescale plasticity: picosecond-scale short-term modulation of spike transmission and long-term weight retention exceeding 10,000 seconds, facilitating both rapid temporal adaptation and robust weight storage. It can operate up to 45 GHz with femtojoule-level energy dissipation per spike, and supports 10 somatic threshold levels and 20 synaptic states. Furthermore, we demonstrate a crossbar-based spiking neural network (SNN) utilizing this neuron, which achieves outstanding performance across multiple tasks. By fusing computation, memory and plasticity into a single superconducting unit, our work paves the way for the next generation of ultrafast, energy-efficient neuromorphic computing.

Griffin Plots of vortex-induced vibrations: revealing self-similarity for quick estimation from transient displacement responses

Griffin plot relates the peak amplitudes of vortex-induced vibration to structrual mass-damping parameter, known as the Scruton number. Griffin plot serves as a fundamental tool in many engineering fields. This study confirms a general self-similarity in Griffin plots, where plots derived from transient responses at any Scruton number converge to a single, consisten curve. This self-similarity arises from weak aeroelastic nonlinearity in vortex-induced vibration, manifasting as amplitude-dependent aerodynamic damping. Based on this self-similarity property, we propose a numerical method to estimate Griffin plots from transient displacement responses at any Scruton number. The resulting plots align closely with experimental data for both cross-flow and torsional vortex-induced vibrations, highlighting robust self-similar behavior across different Scruton numbers. Furthermore, we observe a consistent trend in Griffin plots for a rectangular cylinder, closed-box, and double-girder bridge deck: the reciprocal of peak amplitudes shows an approximately linear relationship with the Scruton number, especially in torsional vortex-induced vibration. To generate this linearity, we develop a simple empirical model of vortex-induced forces. This model accurately reproduces the Griffin plot for a rectangular cylinder using aeroelastic parameters derived from a single Scruton number, significantly reducing the need for extensive experimental measurements.

Sequential Circuits Synthesis for Rapid Single Flux Quantum Logic Based on Finite State Machine Decomposition

Rapid Single Flux Quantum (RSFQ) logic is a promising technology to supersede Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) logic in some specialized areas due to providing ultra-fast and energy-efficient circuits. To realize a large-scale integration design, electronic design automation (EDA) tools specialized for RSFQ logic are required due to the divergences in logic type, timing constraints, and circuit structure compared with CMOS logic. Logic synthesis is crucial in converting behavioral circuit description into circuit netlist, typically combining combinational and sequential circuit synthesis. For the RSFQ logic, the sequential circuit synthesis is challenging, especially for non-linear sequential blocks with feedback loops. Thus, this paper presents a sequential circuit synthesis algorithm based on finite state machine (FSM) decomposition, which ensures design functionality, lowers costs, and improves the RSFQ circuit performance. Additionally, we present the synthesis processes of the feedback logic and the 2-bit counter to demonstrate how the proposed algorithm operates, and ISCAS89 benchmark circuits reveal our method's ability to synthesize large-scale sequential circuits.

A Hybrid Josephson Transmission Line and Passive Transmission Line Routing Framework for Single Flux Quantum Logic

The Single Flux Quantum (SFQ) logic family is a novel digital logic as it provides ultra-fast and energy-efficient circuits. For large-scale SFQ circuit design, specialized electronic design automation (EDA) tools are required due to the differences in logic type, timing constraints and circuit architecture, in contrast to the CMOS logic. In order to improve the overall performance of an SFQ circuit, an efficient routing algorithm should be applied during the layout design to perform accurate timing adjustment for fixing hold violations and optimizing critical paths. Thus, a hybrid Josephson transmission line and passive transmission line routing framework is proposed. It consists of four main modules and an exploration of the potential timing performance based on the given layout placement. The proposed routing tool is demonstrated on seven testbench circuits. The obtained results demonstrate that the operating frequency is greatly improved, and all the hold violations are eliminated for each circuit.
