RIS-Enabled Energy-Efficient ISAC for Vehicular Applications

By incorporating integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) into vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) networks, roadside units (RSUs) can support data transmission while providing additional sensing capabilities, thereby enabling intelligent transportation services. By deploying large-scale antenna arrays at RSU, the V2I network can realize more reliable connectivity and more accurate vehicle tracking by harnessing the significant beamforming gains provided by the enlarged antenna aperture. However, it is not energy efficient to realize such arrays using conventional phased arrays, which rely on numerous power-hungry phase shifters. To address this, this demo presents the first reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-based ISAC-empowered vehicular network prototype, which operates at sub-6 GHz band to be compatible with existing vehicular systems. The RIS has a low power consumption of 6.8W. Experimental results show that compared with the system without RIS, the proposed RIS-based prototype enables more accurate vehicle trajectory tracking with an average localization error of 0.11m and supports more robust data transmission, as evidenced by a 41.9% reduction in error vector magnitude (EVM). These results validate the effectiveness of the RIS-based ISAC system for supporting vehicular networks.

Holographic Beamforming for Semantic Communication

Holographic beamforming enabled by metamaterial antennas has been proposed to facilitate spatial multiplexing at low hardware cost and low power consumption. However, existing holographic beamforming schemes are mainly developed for conventional bit-communication systems, which have not considered semantic-level importance and thus cannot be directly applied to support semantic communication. Specifically, in conventional bit communication, all bits are treated as equally important. In contrast, in semantic communication, different semantic information contribute unequally to task completion and therefore has different degrees of importance, with more important information requiring higher transmission quality. Ignoring semantic importance in holographic beamforming causes mismatches between importance of semantic information and its received SNR, thus degrading performances. In this paper, we propose a semantic-importance-aware holographic beamforming scheme enabled by metamaterial antennas with tunable radiated amplitudes to support semantic communication. It is challenging to design semantic-aware holographic beamforming schemes due to non-trivial modeling of the impact of semantic importance and unique amplitude-controlled structures of holographic beamforming. To address this, we characterize the dependence of semantic communication performance on semantic importance and received SNR via data fitting, and design a semantic-aware holographic beamforming algorithm to ensure reliable delivery of highly important semantic information. Simulation results validate effectiveness of the proposed method.

Holographic Integrated Sensing and Communication With Limited Radiation Amplitudes: How Many Quantization Bits Are Enough?

As a promising solution for extremely large-scale arrays, reconfigurable holographic surfaces (RHS) can be integrated with integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) to form the holographic ISAC paradigm, where significant beamforming gains provided by RHS can improve both communication and sensing performance. However, most existing works on holographic ISAC assume that RHS elements can control the amplitudes of radiated ISAC signals in a continuous manner, which is hard to implement in practice. In this paper, we investigate how the limited radiation amplitudes of the RHS influence ISAC system performance. Specifically, we first derive closed-form lower bounds for both communication rate and sensing SINR to establish a tight upper bound on the minimum radiation amplitude quantization bits. Based on this, we further explore how the communication-sensing performance tradeoff impacts the quantization bits. Numerical results validate our theoretical analysis.

Holographic Surface Enabled Integrated Sensing and Communications

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) is an essential 6G capability for joint data transmission and environmental sensing. To support 6G scenarios with stringent ISAC performance requirements, existing massive-MIMO-based systems are expected to scale toward ultra-massive MIMO. However, this scaling incurs prohibitive cost and power consumption when realized using widely adopted phased arrays with complex phase shifters and feeding networks. Recently, holographic integrated sensing and communications (HISAC) has emerged as a promising paradigm to address this issue. It employs reconfigurable holographic surfaces (RHSs), a type of leaky-wave antenna, as a cost- and energy-efficient implementation of ultra-massive MIMO-based ISAC, and offers enhanced flexibility for ISAC beam synthesis through holographic beamforming. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive tutorial on HISAC, focusing on how RHS-enabled holographic beamforming can be exploited to jointly support communication and sensing under practical hardware constraints. We first introduce the fundamentals of RHSs and discuss the unique leakage power constraint of holographic beamforming. We then present a general optimization framework for HISAC and show how HISAC enhances joint communication and sensing, sensing-assisted communication, and communication-assisted sensing. We further present HISAC system implementations and experimental results. Finally, we outline promising research directions for HISAC, highlighting the potential of HISAC in advancing efficient, flexible, and high-performance ISAC networks.

Tri-Hybrid Holographic Beamforming for Integrated Sensing and Communication

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) can perform both communication and sensing tasks using the same frequency band and hardware, making it a key technology for 6G. As a low-cost implementation for large-scale antenna arrays, reconfigurable holographic surfaces (RHSs) can be integrated into ISAC systems to realize the holographic ISAC paradigm, where enlarged radiation apertures achieve significant beamforming gains. In this paper, we investigate the tri-hybrid holographic ISAC framework, where the beamformer comprises digital, analog, and RHS-based electromagnetic (EM) layers. The analog layer employs a small number of phase shifters (PSs) to provide subarray-level phase control for the amplitude-modulated RHSs. Tri-hybrid beamforming provides a pathway for low-cost large-scale holographic ISAC. However, compared to conventional ISAC systems, it is challenging to achieve joint subarray-level phase control via PSs and element-level radiation amplitude control via RHSs for holographic ISAC. To address this, we present a tri-hybrid holographic ISAC scheme that minimizes sensing waveform error while satisfying the minimum user rate requirement. A joint optimization approach for PS phases and RHS amplitude responses is designed to address inter-layer coupling and distinct feasible regions. Theoretical analyses reveal that the optimized amplitude responses cluster near boundary values, i.e., 1-bit amplitude control, to reduce hardware and algorithmic complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves a controllable performance trade-off between communication and sensing tasks. Measured RHS beam gain validates the enhancement of holographic beamforming through subarray-level phase shifting. Moreover, as the number of RHS elements increases, the proposed approach exceeds the performance of conventional hybrid beamforming while significantly reducing the number of PSs.

Achievable Degrees of Freedom Analysis and Optimization in Massive MIMO via Characteristic Mode Analysis

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is esteemed as a critical technology in 6G communications, providing large degrees of freedom (DoF) to improve multiplexing gain. This paper introduces characteristic mode analysis (CMA) to derive the achievable DoF. Unlike existing works primarily focusing on the DoF of the wireless channel, the excitation and radiation properties of antennas are also involved in our DoF analysis, which influences the number of independent data streams for communication of a MIMO system. Specifically, we model the excitation and radiation properties of transceiver antennas using CMA to analyze the excitation and radiation properties of antennas. The CMA-based DoF analysis framework is established and the achievable DoF is derived. A characteristic mode optimization problem of antennas is then formulated to maximize the achievable DoF. A case study where the reconfigurable holographic surface (RHS) antennas are deployed at the transceiver is investigated, and a CMA-based genetic algorithm is later proposed to solve the above problem. By changing the characteristic modes electric field and surface current distribution of RHS, the achievable DoF is enhanced. Full-wave simulation verifies the theoretical analysis on the the achievable DoF and shows that, via the reconfiguration of RHS based on the proposed algorithm, the achievable DoF is improved.

Holographic Beamforming for Integrated Sensing and Communication with Mutual Coupling Effects

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is envisioned as a key technology in 6G networks, owing to its potential for high spectral and cost efficiency. As a promising solution for extremely large-scale arrays, reconfigurable holographic surfaces (RHS) can be integrated with ISAC to form the holographic ISAC paradigm, where enlarged radiation apertures of RHS can achieve significant beamforming gains, thereby improving both communication and sensing performance. In this paper, we investigate holographic beamforming designs for ISAC systems, which, unlike existing holographic beamforming schemes developed for RHS-aided communications, requires explicit consideration of mutual coupling effects within RHS. This is because, different from prior works only considering communication performance, ISAC systems incorporate sensing functionality, which is sensitive to sidelobe levels. Ignoring mutual coupling in holographic beamforming can lead to notable undesired sidelobes, thus degrading sensing performance. The consideration of mutual coupling introduces new challenges, i.e., it induces non-linearity in beamforming problems, rendering them inherently non-convex. To address this issue, we propose a tractable electromagnetic-compliant holographic ISAC model that characterizes mutual coupling in a closed form using coupled dipole approximations. We then develop an efficient mutual coupling aware holographic beamforming algorithm to suppress sidelobes and enhance ISAC performance. Numerical results validate effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Revisiting Near-Far Field Boundary in Dual-Polarized XL-MIMO Systems

Extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is expected to be an important technology in future sixth generation (6G) networks. Compared with conventional single-polarized XL-MIMO, where signals are transmitted and received in only one polarization direction, dual-polarized XL-MIMO systems achieve higher data rate by improving multiplexing performances, and thus are the focus of this paper. Due to enlarged aperture, near-field regions become non-negligible in XL-MIMO communications, necessitating accurate near-far field boundary characterizations. However, existing boundaries developed for single-polarized systems only consider phase or power differences across array elements while irrespective of cross-polarization discrimination (XPD) variances in dual-polarized XL-MIMO systems, deteriorating transmit covariance optimization performances. In this paper, we revisit near-far field boundaries for dual-polarized XL-MIMO systems by taking XPD differences into account, which faces the following challenge. Unlike existing near-far field boundaries, which only need to consider co-polarized channel components, deriving boundaries for dual-polarized XL-MIMO systems requires modeling joint effects of co-polarized and cross-polarized components. To address this issue, we model XPD variations across antennas and introduce a non-uniform XPD distance to complement existing near-far field boundaries. Based on the new distance criterion, we propose an efficient scheme to optimize transmit covariance. Numerical results validate our analysis and demonstrate the proposed algorithm's effectiveness.

Simultaneous Beamforming and Anti-Jamming With Intelligent Omni-Surfaces

Wireless transmission is vulnerable to malicious jamming attacks due to the openness of wireless channels, posing a severe threat to wireless communications. Current anti-jamming studies primarily focus on either enhancing desired signals or mitigating jamming, resulting in limited performance. To address this issue, intelligent omni-surface (IOS) is a promising solution. By jointly designing its reflective and refractive properties, the IOS can simultaneously nullify jamming and enhance desired signals. In this paper, we consider an IOS-aided multi-user anti-jamming communication system, aiming to improve desired signals and nullify jamming by optimizing IOS phase shifts and transmit beamforming. However, this is challenging due to the coupled and discrete IOS reflection and refraction phase shifts, the unknown jammer's beamformer, and imperfect jammer-related channel state information. To tackle this, we relax IOS phase shifts to continuous states and optimize with a coupling-aware algorithm using the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality and S-procedure, followed by a local search to recover discrete states. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly improves the sum rate amid jamming attacks.

Beamforming Design for Wideband Near-Field Communications With Reconfigurable Refractive Surfaces

To meet the growing demand for high data rates, cellular systems are expected to evolve towards higher carrier frequencies and larger antenna arrays, but conventional phased arrays face challenges in supporting such a prospection due to their excessive power consumption induced by numerous phase shifters required. Reconfigurable Refractive Surface (RRS) is an energy efficient solution to address this issue without relying on phase shifters. However, the increased radiation aperture size extends the range of the Fresnel region, leading the users to lie in the near-field zone. Moreover, given the wideband communications in higher frequency bands, we cannot ignore the frequency selectivity of the RRS. These two effects collectively exacerbate the beam-split issue, where different frequency components fail to converge on the user simultaneously, and finally result in a degradation of the data rate. In this paper, we investigate an RRS-based wideband near-field multi-user communication system. Unlike most existing studies on wideband communications, which consider the beam-split effect only with the near-field condition, we study the beam-split effect under the influence of both the near-field condition and the frequency selectivity of the RRS. To mitigate the beam-split effect, we propose a Delayed-RRS structure, based on which a beamforming scheme is proposed to optimize the user's data rate. Through theoretical analysis and simulation results, we analyze the influence of the RRS's frequency selectivity, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed beamforming scheme, and reveal the importance of jointly considering the near-field condition and the frequency selectivity of RRS.

Dual-Polarized Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Based Antenna for Holographic MIMO Communications

Holographic multiple-input-multiple output (HMIMO), which is enabled by large-scale antenna arrays with quasi-continuous apertures, is expected to be an important technology in the forthcoming 6G wireless network. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-based antennas provide an energy-efficient solution for implementing HMIMO. Most existing works in this area focus on single-polarized RIS-enabled HMIMO, where the RIS can only reflect signals in one polarization towards users and signals in the other polarization cannot be received by intended users, leading to degraded data rate. To improve multiplexing performance, in this paper, we consider a dual-polarized RIS-enabled single-user HMIMO network, aiming to optimize power allocations across polarizations and analyze corresponding maximum system capacity. However, due to interference between different polarizations, the dual-polarized system cannot be simply decomposed into two independent single-polarized ones. Therefore, existing methods developed for the single-polarized system cannot be directly applied, which makes the optimization and analysis of the dual-polarized system challenging. To cope with this issue, we derive an asymptotically tight upper bound on the ergodic capacity, based on which the power allocations across two polarizations are optimized. Potential gains achievable with such dual-polarized RIS are analyzed. Numerical results verify our analysis.

Hybrid Near-Far Field Channel Estimation for Holographic MIMO Communications

Holographic MIMO communications, enabled by large-scale antenna arrays with quasi-continuous apertures, is a potential technology for spectrum efficiency improvement. However, the increased antenna aperture size extends the range of the Fresnel region, leading to a hybrid near-far field communication mode. The users and scatterers randomly lie in near-field and far-field zones, and thus, conventional far-field-only and near-field-only channel estimation methods may not work. To tackle this challenge, we demonstrate the existence of the power diffusion (PD) effect, which leads to a mismatch between the hybrid-field channel and existing channel estimation methods. Specifically, in far-field and near-field transform domains, the power gain of one channel path may diffuse to other positions, thus generating fake paths. This renders the conventional techniques unable to detect those real paths. We propose a PD-aware orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm to eliminate the influence of the PD effect by identifying the PD range within which paths diffuse to other positions. PD-OMP fits a general case without prior knowledge of near-field and far-field path numbers and the user's location. The computational complexity of PD-OMP and the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound for the sparse-signal-recovery-based channel estimation are also derived. Simulation results show that PD-OMP outperforms state-of-the-art hybrid-field channel estimation methods.

Channel Estimation for Holographic Communications in Hybrid Near-Far Field

To realize holographic communications, a potential technology for spectrum efficiency improvement in the future sixth-generation (6G) network, antenna arrays inlaid with numerous antenna elements will be deployed. However, the increase in antenna aperture size makes some users lie in the Fresnel region, leading to the hybrid near-field and far-field communication mode, where the conventional far-field channel estimation methods no longer work well. To tackle the above challenge, this paper considers channel estimation in a hybrid-field multipath environment, where each user and each scatterer can be in either the far-field or the near-field region. First, a joint angular-polar domain channel transform is designed to capture the hybrid-field channel's near-field and far-field features. We then analyze the power diffusion effect in the hybrid-field channel, which indicates that the power corresponding to one near-field (far-field) path component of the multipath channel may spread to far-field (near-field) paths and causes estimation error. We design a novel power-diffusion-based orthogonal matching pursuit channel estimation algorithm (PD-OMP). It can eliminate the prior knowledge requirement of path numbers in the far field and near field, which is a must in other OMP-based channel estimation algorithms. Simulation results show that PD-OMP outperforms current hybrid-field channel estimation methods.

Near-Far Field Channel Modeling for Holographic MIMO Using Expectation-Maximization Methods

Holographic Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (HMIMO), which densely integrates numerous antennas into a limited space, is anticipated to provide higher rates for future 6G wireless communications. The increase in antenna aperture size makes the near-field region enlarge, causing some users to be located in the near-field region. Thus, we are facing a hybrid near-field and far-field communication problem, where conventional far-field modeling methods may not work well. In this paper, we propose a near-far field channel model that does not presuppose whether each path is near-field or far-field, different from the existing work requiring the ratio of the number of near-field paths to that of far-field paths as prior knowledge. However, this gives rise to a new challenge for accurately modeling the channel, as conventional methods of obtaining channel model parameters are not applicable to this model. Therefore, we propose a new method, Expectation-Maximization (EM)-based Near-Far Field Channel Modeling, to obtain channel model parameters, which considers whether each path is near-field or far-field as a hidden variable, and optimizes the hidden variables and channel model parameters through an alternating iteration method. Simulation results show that our method is superior to conventional near-field and far-field algorithms in fitting the near-far field channel in terms of outage probability.

RIS-based IMT-2030 Testbed for MmWave Multi-stream Ultra-massive MIMO Communications

As one enabling technique of the future sixth generation (6G) network, ultra-massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) can support high-speed data transmissions and cell coverage extension. However, it is hard to realize the ultra-massive MIMO via traditional phased arrays due to unacceptable power consumption. To address this issue, reconfigurable intelligent surface-based (RIS-based) antennas are an energy-efficient enabler of the ultra-massive MIMO, since they are free of energy-hungry phase shifters. In this article, we report the performances of the RIS-enabled ultra-massive MIMO via a project called Verification of MmWave Multi-stream Transmissions Enabled by RIS-based Ultra-massive MIMO for 6G (V4M), which was proposed to promote the evolution towards IMT-2030. In the V4M project, we manufacture RIS-based antennas with 1024 one-bit elements working at 26 GHz, based on which an mmWave dual-stream ultra-massive MIMO prototype is implemented for the first time. To approach practical settings, the Tx and Rx of the prototype are implemented by one commercial new radio base station and one off-the-shelf user equipment, respectively. The measured data rate of the dual-stream prototype approaches the theoretical peak rate. Our contributions to the V4M project are also discussed by presenting technological challenges and corresponding solutions.

Intelligent Omni-Surfaces Aided Wireless Communications: Does the Reciprocity Hold?

Intelligent omni-surfaces (IOS) have attracted great attention recently due to its potential to achieve full-dimensional communications by simultaneously reflecting and refracting signals toward both sides of the surface. However, it still remains an open question whether the reciprocity holds between the uplink and downlink channels in the IOS-aided wireless communications. In this work, we first present a physics-compliant IOS related channel model, based on which the channel reciprocity is investigated. We then demonstrate the angle-dependent electromagnetic response of the IOS element in terms of both incident and departure angles. This serves as the key feature of IOS that drives our analytical results on beam non-reciprocity. Finally, simulation and experimental results are provided to verify our theoretical analyses.

Intelligent Omni-Surfaces: Reflection-Refraction Circuit Model, Full-Dimensional Beamforming, and System Implementation

The intelligent omni-surface (IOS) is a dynamic metasurface that has recently been proposed to achieve full-dimensional communications by realizing the dual function of anomalous reflection and anomalous refraction. Existing research works provide only simplified models for the reflection and refraction responses of the IOS, which do not explicitly depend on the physical structure of the IOS and the angle of incidence of the electromagnetic (EM) wave. Therefore, the available reflection-refraction models are insufficient to characterize the performance of full-dimensional communications. In this paper, we propose a complete and detailed circuit-based reflection-refraction model for the IOS, which is formulated in terms of the physical structure and equivalent circuits of the IOS elements, as well as we validate it against full-wave EM simulations. Based on the proposed circuit-based model for the IOS, we analyze the asymmetry between the reflection and transmission coefficients. Moreover, the proposed circuit-based model is utilized for optimizing the hybrid beamforming of IOS-assisted networks and hence improving the system performance. To verify the circuit-based model, the theoretical findings, and to evaluate the performance of full-dimensional beamforming, we implement a prototype of IOS and deploy an IOS-assisted wireless communication testbed to experimentally measure the beam patterns and to quantify the achievable rate. The obtained experimental results validate the theoretical findings and the accuracy of the proposed circuit-based reflection-refraction model for IOSs.

Reconfigurable Refractive Surfaces: An Energy-Efficient Way to Holographic MIMO

Holographic Multiple Input Multiple Output (HMIMO), which integrates massive antenna elements into a compact space to achieve a spatially continuous aperture, plays an important role in future wireless networks. With numerous antenna elements, it is hard to implement the HMIMO via phased arrays due to unacceptable power consumption. To address this issue, reconfigurable refractive surface (RRS) is an energy efficient enabler of HMIMO since the surface is free of expensive phase shifters. Unlike traditional metasurfaces working as passive relays, the RRS is used as transmit antennas, where the far-field approximation does not hold anymore, urging a new performance analysis framework. In this letter, we first derive the data rate of an RRS-based single-user downlink system, and then compare its power consumption with the phased array. Simulation results verify our analysis and show that the RRS is an energy-efficient way to HMIMO.
