Selective coupling of high-order phonons in La2-xSrxCuO4

In crystals and molecules with strong coupling between the charge carriers and atomic vibrations, high order harmonics of the vibrational excitations can be observed with intensity following the Franck-Condon envelope. Here, we uncover a new regime of electron-phonon coupling in La2-xSrxCuO4 using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. In the undoped compound, we find sharp peaks at approximately 85$\pm$5 meV, 180$\pm$7 meV, and 330$\pm$5 meV with no observable dispersion, and an absence of appreciable intensity from other modes observed in Raman spectroscopy in this energy range. The 180 meV and 330 meV excitations have energies approximately consistent with two-phonon and four-phonon in-plane Cu-O bond stretching mode, suggesting that the resonantly excited valence electrons strongly couple to this mode. These excitations exhibit significant doping dependence, eventually becoming unresolvable at 10% hole doping, where the low energy charge excitations are dominated by dispersive plasmons. The observation of selective coupling to even-ordered phonons and stark contrast with the Raman spectra indicate anomalous electron-phonon coupling beyond the Franck-Condon picture. One intriguing possibility is the existence of locally paired quasiparticles in insulating cuprates.

Fermi surface in La-based cuprate superconductors from Compton scattering imaging

Compton scattering provides invaluable information on the underlying Fermi surface (FS) and is a powerful tool complementary to angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and quantum oscillation measurements. Here we perform high-resolution Compton scattering measurements for La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} with x=0.08 (Tc=20K) at 300K and 150K, and image the momentum distribution function in the two-dimensional Brillouin zone. We find that the observed images cannot be reconciled with the conventional hole-like FS believed so far. Instead, our data imply that the FS is strongly deformed by the underlying nematicity in each CuO_2 plane, but the bulk FSs recover the fourfold symmetry. We also find an unusually strong temperature dependence of the momentum distribution function, which may originate from the pseudogap formation in the presence of the reconstructed FSs due to the underlying nematicity. Additional measurements for x=0.15 and 0.30 at 300K suggest similar FS deformation with weaker nematicity, which nearly vanishes at x=0.30.

Coexistence of Two Components in Magnetic Excitations of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x$ = 0.10 and 0.16)

To elucidate the spin dynamics of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, which couples with the charge degree of freedom, the spin excitations spanning the characteristic energy ($E_{\rm cross}$ $\sim$35-40 meV) are investigated for underdoped $x$ = 0.10 and optimally doped (OP) $x$ = 0.16 through inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Analysis based on a two-component picture of high-quality data clarified the possible coexistence of uprightly standing incommensurate (IC) excitations with gapless commensurate (C) excitations in the energy-momentum space. The IC component weakens the intensity toward $E_{\rm cross}$ with increasing energy transfer ($\hbarω$), whereas the C component strengthens at high-$\hbarω$ regions. The analysis results imply that the superposition of two components with a particular intensity balance forms an hourglass-shaped excitation in appearance. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the intensity of each component exhibits different behaviors; the IC component disappears near the pseudo-gap temperature ($T$*) upon warming, whereas the C component is robust against temperature. These results suggest the itinerant electron spin nature and the localized magnetism of the parent La$_2$CuO$_4$ in IC and C excitations, respectively, similar to the spin excitations in the OP YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ and HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ with higher superconducting-transition temperatures.

Observation of Unusual Magnetoelastic Effects in a Quasi-1D Spiral Magnet

We present a systematic study of spin and lattice dynamics in the quasi-one-dimensional spiral magnet CuBr2, using Raman scattering in conjunction with infrared and neutron spectroscopy. Along with the development of spin correlations upon cooling, we observe a rich set of broad Raman bands at energies that correspond to phonon-dispersion energies near the one-dimensional magnetic wave vector. The low-energy bands further exhibit a distinct intensity maximum at the spiral magnetic ordering temperature. We attribute these unusual observations to two possible underlying mechanisms: (1) formation of hybrid spin-lattice excitations, and/or (2) "quadrumerization" of the lattice caused by spin-singlet entanglement in competition with the spiral magnetism.

Magnetoelectric Effect driven by Magnetic Domain Modification in LuFe2O4

Magneto-capacitance effect was investigated using the impedance spectroscopy on single crystals of LuFe2O4. The intrinsic impedance response could be separated from the interfacial response and showed a clear hysteresis loop below TFerri ~ 240 K under the magnetic field. The neutron diffraction experiment under the magnetic field proves the origin of dielectric property related to the motion of nano-sized ferromagnetic domain boundary. These results imply that the modification of the microscopic domain structure is responsible for the magnetoelectric effect in LuFe2O4.

Progress in Neutron Scattering Studies of Spin Excitations in High-Tc Cuprates

Neutron scattering experiments continue to improve our knowledge of spin fluctuations in layered cuprates, excitations that are symptomatic of the electronic correlations underlying high-temperature superconductivity. Time-of-flight spectrometers, together with new and varied single crystal samples, have provided a more complete characterization of the magnetic energy spectrum and its variation with carrier concentration. While the spin excitations appear anomalous in comparison with simple model systems, there is clear consistency among a variety of cuprate families. Focusing initially on hole-doped systems, we review the nature of the magnetic spectrum, and variations in magnetic spectral weight with doping. We consider connections with the phenomena of charge and spin stripe order, and the potential generality of such correlations as suggested by studies of magnetic-field and impurity induced order. We contrast the behavior of the hole-doped systems with the trends found in the electron-doped superconductors. Returning to hole-doped cuprates, studies of translation-symmetry-preserving magnetic order are discussed, along with efforts to explore new systems. We conclude with a discussion of future challenges.

Incommensurate lattice distortion in the high temperature tetragonal phase of La$_{2-x}$(Sr,Ba)$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$

We report incommensurate diffuse (ICD) scattering appearing in the high-temperature-tetragonal (HTT) phase of La$_{2-x}$(Sr,Ba)$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with $0.07 \leq x \leq 0.20$ observed by the neutron diffraction technique. For all compositions, a sharp superlattice peak of the low-temperature-orthorhombic (LTO) structure is replaced by a pair of ICD peaks with the modulation vector parallel to the CuO$_6$ octahedral tilting direction, that is, the diagonal Cu-Cu direction of the CuO$_2$ plane, above the LTO-HTT transition temperature $T_s$. The temperature dependences of the incommensurability $δ$ for all samples scale approximately as $T/T_s$, while those of the integrated intensity of the ICD peaks scale as $(T-T_s)^{-1}$. These observations together with absence of ICD peaks in the non-superconducting $x=0.05$ sample evince a universal incommensurate lattice instability of hole-doped 214 cuprates in the superconducting regime.

Neutron scattering study of soft phonons and diffuse scattering in insulating La$_{1.95}$Sr$_{0.05}$CuO$_{4}$

Soft phonons and diffuse scattering in insulating La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ ($x=0.05$) have been studied by the neutron scattering technique. The X-point phonon softens from high temperature towards the structural transition temperature $T_{s}=410$ K, and the Z-point phonon softens again below 200 K. The Z-point phonon softening persists to low temperature, in contrast to the behavior observed in the superconducting $x=0.15$ compound, in which the Z-point phonon hardens below $T_c$. The diffuse scattering associated with the structural phase transition at 410 K appears at commensurate positions. These results highlight interesting differences between superconducting and insulating samples.

Antiferromagnetism in CaCu$_{3}$Ti$_{4}$O$_{12}$ studied by magnetic Raman spectroscopy

For CaCu$_{3}$Ti$_{4}$O$_{12}$ -- an insulator that exhibits a giant dielectric response above 100 K -- Cu$^{2+}$ antiferromagnetic spin ordering has been investigated by magnetic Raman scattering and magnetization measurements. Below the Néel temperature, T$_{N} = 25$ K, magnetic excitations have been identified. Above T$_{N}$ Raman spectra reveal short-range antiferromagnetic fluctuations that increase with cooling like T$^{-1}$. No deviations from Curie-Weiss law have been observed above T$_{N}$.
