Self-gravitating equilibrium with slow steady flow and its consistent form of entropy current

A relativistic self-gravitating equilibrium system with spherical symmetry as well as with steady energy flow is investigated perturbatively around the hydrostatic limit, where the radial component of the fluid velocity field $u^μ$ is sufficiently small. Each component of vectors and tensors consisting of the system is expanded in different powers, which makes the covariant perturbation approach ineffective. The differential equations to determine the subleading correction of the structure variables are presented. The system retains the current $j^μ$ accounting for the steady flow, which contributes to the entropy current $s^μ$ in such a general covariant form that $s^μ=au^μ+ bj^μ$ with $a, b$ unknown parametric functions. To determine them, a new condition is proposed. This condition imposes the entropy current to be of an unconventional form $s^μ=(s-bj^0)u^μ/u^0+ bj^μ$, where $s$ is the entropy density. The remaining parameter $b$ is fixed by the current conservation equation. The perturbative analysis shows that $b$ starts with the quadratic order and its leading term is determined explicitly.

Gravitational Equilibrium with Steady Flow and Relativistic Local Thermodynamics

A relativistic self-gravitating equilibrium system with steady flow as well as spherical symmetry is discovered. The energy-momentum tensor contains the contribution of a current related to the flow and the metric tensor does an off-diagonal component to balance with the flow momentum. The presence of the off-diagonal component of the metric implies the radial motion of the reference frame, which gives rise to a problem how the relativistic effect is included in thermodynamic observables for such a general relativistic system. This problem is solved by taking an instantaneously rest frame in which geometric thermodynamic observables read as previously and giving them the special relativistic effect emerged from the inverse transformation to the original frame pointwise. The solution of the thermodynamic observables in accord with the laws of thermodynamics and the theory of relativity is presented. Finally the relativistic structure equations for the equilibrium are derived, from which the general relativistic Poisson equation as well as the heat conduction one are developed exactly.

Stellar Physics and General Relativity

The general theory of relativity is currently established as the most precise theory of gravity supported by observations, and its application is diverse ranging from astronomy to cosmology, while its application to astrophysics has been restricted only to compact stars due to the assumption that the Newtonian approximation is sufficient for celestial bodies with medium density such as the sun. Surprisingly, the recent research of the author has implied that this long-held assumption is not valid, and that non-perturbative effects significantly change relevant results obtained by Newtonian gravity. In particular, local physical quantities inside the sun are newly predicted to exhibit power law differently from the so-called standard solar model. This surprising result is reviewed including brief discussion of physics behind the discrepancy and a new application of the new mass formula to gas planets.

Local Thermodynamics and Entropy for Relativistic Hydrostatic Equilibrium

By refining the method proposed in arXiv:2010.07660, entropy current and entropy density for a relativistic hydrostatic equilibrium system with spherical symmetry are constructed as a non-Noether conserved charge in the Einstein gravity with cosmological constant. It is shown that the constructed entropy density satisfies both the local Euler relation and the first law of thermodynamics non-perturbatively with respect to the Newton constant. Finally the established relativistic thermodynamics is applied to one of the systems with uniform energy density as a crude model of a degenerate star and its local thermodynamic observables are determined analytically.

What is the correct definition of entropy for general relativistic field theory?

Recently, the author and collaborators proposed a method to construct a new conserved charge different from the Noether one for general relativistic field theory on curved space-time with energy-momentum tensor covariantly conserved, and that the new conserved charge describes the entropy of the system. As concrete evidence of the proposals, it was shown that such a new conserved charge indeed exists for several classic gravitational systems, and that the proposed entropy density computed in them satisfies the local Euler's relation and the first law of thermodynamics concurrently and non-perturbatively with respect to the Newton constant. These developments are reviewed including brief discussions of physical implications of the local thermodynamic relations.

Relativistic Hydrostatic Structure Equations and Analytic Multilayer Stellar Model

The relativistic extension of the classic stellar structure equations is investigated. It is pointed out that the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov (TOV) equation with the gradient equation for local gravitational mass can be made complete as a closed set of differential equations by adding that for the Tolman temperature with one equation of state, and the set is proposed as the relativistic hydrostatic structure equations. The exact forms of the relativistic Poisson equation and the steady-state heat conduction equation in the curved spacetime are derived. The application to an ideal gas of particles with the conserved particle number current leads to a strong prediction that the heat capacity ratio almost becomes one in any Newtonian convection zone such as the solar surface. The steady-state heat conduction equation is solved exactly in the system and thermodynamic observables exhibit the power law behavior, which implies the possibility for the system to be a new model of stellar corona and a flaw in the earlier one obtained by using the non-relativistic stellar structure equations. The mixture with another ideal gas yields multilayer structure to a stellar model, in which classic stellar structure equations are reproduced and analytic multilayer structure of luminous stars including the Sun is revealed in suitable approximation.

Special flow equation and GKP-Witten relation

We develop a framework for the reconstruction of the bulk theory dual to conformal field theory (CFT) without any assumption by means of a flow equation. To this end we investigate a minimal extension of the free flow equation and find that at a special parametrization the conformal transformation for a normalized smeared operator exactly becomes the isometry of anti-de Sitter space (AdS). By employing this special flow equation to O$(N)$ vector models, we explicitly show that the AdS geometry as well as the scalar field satisfying the GKP-Witten relation concurrently emerge in this framework.

An analytic model for gravitational collapse of spherical matter under mixed pressure

We investigate spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of thick matter shell without radiation in the Einstein gravity with cosmological constant. The orbit of the infalling thick matter is determined by imposing an equation of state for the matter near interface, where pressure constituted of the transverse component and the longitudinal one is proportional to energy density. We present analytic solutions for the equation of state and discuss parameter region to satisfy physical conditions such as the absence of the shell crossing singularity, the monotonic increase of the emergent infinite redshift surface and energy conditions. We finally show that adopting the definition presented in arXiv:2005.13233 the total energy in this time-dependent system is invariant under the given time evolution.

Gravitational collapse of spherical shells of fluid in the isotropic homogeneous universe

We investigate gravitational collapse of thick shell of fluid in the isotropic homogeneous universe without radiation described by the Einstein gravity with cosmological constant. We construct analytic solutions of this kind interpolating the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric and the de-Sitter Schwarzschild black hole one by the Gullstrand-Painlevé one. After determining the scale factor for a perfect fluid coexisting with cosmological constant, we determine the orbit of the collapsing shells of fluid from the continuity condition for density and the perpendicular component of pressure at interface. However the continuity condition cannot fix the orbit when there does not exist a perfect fluid inside the shells. In this case we determine the orbit from an equation of state for the fluid consisting a shell near the surface. Finally we confirm that the total energy defined in arXiv:2005.13233 is independent of the given time evolution in this system.

Topological phase, spin Chern-Simons theory and level rank duality on lens space

We study a method to compute a topological phase factor of partition function for pure Chern-Simons theory incorporating the supersymmetric localization. We develop a regularization preserving supersymmetry and the topological phase appears as a result of the supersymmetric regularization. Applying this method to pure Chern-Simons theory on lens space we compute the background dependent phase factor coming from the Chern-Simons term. We confirm that the partition function computed in this method enjoys a couple of level rank dualities including the one recently proposed in arXiv:1607.07457 for all ranks and levels within our numerical calculation. We also present a phase factor with which the lens space partition function exhibits the perfect match between any level rank dual pair including the total phase.

Charge Conservation, Entropy Current, and Gravitation

We propose a new class of vector fields to construct a conserved charge in a general field theory whose energy momentum tensor is covariantly conserved. We show that there always exists such a vector field in a given field theory even without global symmetry. We also argue that the conserved current constructed from the (asymptotically) time-like vector field can be identified with the entropy current of the system. As a piece of evidence we show that the conserved charge defined therefrom satisfies the first law of thermodynamics for an isotropic system with a suitable definition of temperature. We apply our formulation to several gravitational systems such as the expanding universe, Schwarzschild and BTZ black holes, and gravitational plane waves. We confirm the conservation of the proposed entropy density under any homogeneous and isotropic expansion of the universe, the precise reproduction of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy incorporating the first law of thermodynamics, and the existence of gravitational plane wave carrying no charge, respectively. We also comment on the energy conservation during gravitational collapse in simple models.

U(1) spin Chern-Simons theory and Arf invariants in two dimensions

The level-k U(1) Chern-Simons theory is a spin topological quantum field theory for k odd. Its dynamics is captured by the 2d CFT of a compact boson with a certain radius. Recently it was recognized that a dependence on the 2d spin structure can be given to the CFT by modifying it using the so-called Arf invariant. We demonstrate that one can reorganize the torus partition function of the modified CFT into a finite sum involving a finite number of conformal blocks. This allows us to reproduce the modular matrices of the spin theory. We use the modular matrices to calculate the partition function of the spin Chern-Simons theory on the lens space $L(a,\pm 1)$, and demonstrate the expected dependence on the 3d spin structure.

What does a quantum black hole look like?

We take a first step towards a holographic description of a black hole by means of a flow equation. We consider a free theory of multiple scalar fields at finite temperature and study its holographic geometry defined through a free flow of the scalar fields. We find that the holographic metric has the following properties: i) It is an asymptotic Anti-de Sitter (AdS) black brane metric with some unknown matter contribution. ii) It has no coordinate singularity and milder curvature singularity. iii) Its time component decays exponentially at a certain AdS radial slice. We find that the matter spreads all over the space, which we speculate to be due to thermal excitation of infinitely many massless higher spin fields. We conjecture that the above three are generic features of a black hole holographically realized by the flow equation method.

Conserved charges in general relativity

We present a precise definition of a conserved quantity from an arbitrary covariantly conserved current available in a general curved spacetime with Killing vectors. This definition enables us to define energy and momentum for matter by the volume integral. As a result we can compute charges of Schwarzschild and BTZ black holes by the volume integration of a delta function singularity. Employing the definition we also compute the total energy of a static compact star. It contains both the gravitational mass known as the Misner-Sharp mass in the Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation and the gravitational binding energy. We show that the gravitational binding energy has the negative contribution at maximum by 68% of the gravitational mass in the case of a constant density. We finally comment on a definition of generators associated with a vector field on a general curved manifold.

Holographic de Sitter Spacetime and Quantum Corrections to The Cosmological Constant

A dynamical aspect of quantum gravity on de Sitter spacetime is investigated by holography or the dS/CFT correspondence. We show that de Sitter spacetime emerges from a free Sp(N) vector model by complexifying the ghost fields and flowing them in parallel to the imaginary axis. We confirm that the emergence of de Sitter spacetime is ensured by conformal symmetry. We also compute the quantum corrections to the cosmological constant up to the next-to-leading order of the 1/N expansion in a proposed holographic approach. As a result the sub-leading corrections have the opposite sign to the classical value. This implies that a quantum gravity on de Sitter spacetime is perturbatively stable and quantum effects make the universe flatter and the cosmological constant smaller.

Non-relativistic Hybrid Geometry with Gravitational Gauge-Fixing Term

We search a gravitational system which allows a non-relativistic hybrid geometry interpolating the Schrödinger and Lifshitz spacetimes as a solution, as a continuation of the previous work employing a flow equation. As such a candidate an Einstein-Maxwell-Higgs system naturally arises and we verify that this system indeed supports the hybrid geometry with the help of a gauge-fixing term for diffeomorphism. As a result, this gravitational system may be interpreted as a holographic dual of a general non-relativistic system at the boundary.

Holographic computation of quantum corrections to the bulk cosmological constant

We explore the program of the construction of the dual bulk theory in the flow equation approach. We compute the vacuum expectation value of the Einstein operator at the next to leading order in the 1/n expansion using a free O(n) vector model. We interpret the next to leading correction as the quantum correction to the cosmological constant of the AdS space. We finally comment on how to generalize this computation to matrix elements of the Einstein operator for excited states.
