Thermodynamic properties and phase transition of strongly interacting two-component Fermi gases

The thermodynamic properties of two-component Fermi gases with divergent scattering length is investigated and the transition temperature for the emergence of a stable dimeric gas is obtained by a simple theoretical model where the unique property of the dimers (i.e. fermionic atom pairs) with divergent scattering length is considered. Below the transition temperature, through the investigation of the overall entropy for the mixture gas of fermionic atoms and dimers, we calculate the relation between the energy and temperature of the system. In the limit of zero temperature, based on the chemical equilibrium condition, the fraction of the dimers is investigated and the role of the dimers in the collective excitations of the system is also discussed. It is found that our theoretical results agree with the condensate fraction, collective excitations, transition temperature and heat capacity investigated by the recent experiments about the strongly interacting two-component Fermi gases.

Dimers of ultracold two-component Fermi gases on magnetic-field Feshbach resonance

At the location of a magnetic-field Feshbach resonance, a mixture gas of fermionic atoms and dimers of fermionic atom pairs is investigated in the unitarity limit where the absolute value of the scattering length is much larger than the mean distance between atoms. The dynamic equilibrium of the mixture gases is characterized by the minimum of the Gibbs free energy. For the fermionic atoms and dimers with divergent scattering length, it is found that the fraction of the dimers based on a very simple theory agrees with the high fraction of zero-momentum molecules observed in a recent experiment (M. W. Zwierlein et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 120403 (2004)). The dimeric gas can be also used to interpret the frequency of the radial breathing mode observed in the experiment by J. Kinast et al (Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 150402 (2004)).

Condensate fraction of molecules for a spin mixture of ultracold fermionic atoms

The condensate fraction of molecules for ultracold Fermi gases is investigated for the magnetic field below the Feshbach resonant magnetic field. Assuming that there is no loss of particles and energy during the adiabatic magnetic-field sweep, a simple theory is used to interpret the measured condensate fraction in the experiments by JILA group (Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 040403 (2004)) and MIT group (Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 120403 (2004)). Our theory shows that the condensate fraction of molecules is dependent on the initial condition of the system and especially on the process of the magnetic-field sweep.

Anomalous particle-number fluctuations in a three-dimensional interacting Bose-Einstein condensate

The particle-number fluctuations originated from collective excitations are investigated for a three-dimensional, repulsively interacting Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in a harmonic trap. The contribution due to the quantum depletion of the condensate is calculated and the explicit expression of the coefficient in the formulas denoting the particle-number fluctuations is given. The results show that the particle-number fluctuations of the condensate follow the law $<δN_0^2> \sim N^{22/15}$ and the fluctuations vanish when temperature approaches to the BEC critical temperature.

Phase diffusion of Bose-Einstein condensates in a one-dimensional optical lattice

We investigate the phase diffusion of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in the combined potential of a magnetic trap and a one-dimensional optical lattice. We show that the phase diffusion of the condensate in the whole optical lattice is evident and can be measured from the interference pattern of expanding subcondensates after the optical lattice is switched off. The maximum density of the interference pattern decreases significantly due to the mixing of the phase diffusion appearing in different subcondensates. This suggests a way to detect experimentally the notable phase diffusion of BECs.

Interference pattern of Bose-condensed gas in a 2D optical lattice

For the Bose-condensed gas confined in a magnetic trap and in a two-dimensional optical lattice, the non-uniform distribution of atoms in different lattice sites is considered based on Gross-Pitaevskii equation. A propagator method is used to investigate the time evolution of 2D interference patterns after (i)only the optical lattice is swithed off, and (ii)both the optical lattice and the magnetic trap are swithed off. An analytical description on the motion of side peaks in the interference patterns is presented by using the density distribution in a momentum space.

Anomalous fluctuations of two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the particle-number fluctuations due to the collective excitations created in a two-dimensional (2D) and a quasi-2D Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) at low temperature. We find that the fluctuations display an anomalous behavior, i. e. for the 2D BEC they are proportional to $N^2$, where $N$ is the total number of particles. For the quasi-2D BEC, the particle-number fluctuations are proportional not only to $N^2$ but also to the square root of the trapping frequency in the strongly-confined direction.

Evolution of a coherent array of Bose-Einstein Condensates in a magnetic trap

We investigate the evolution process of the interference pattern for a coherent array of Bose-Einstein condensates in a magnetic trap after the optical lattices are switched off. It is shown that there is a decay and revival of the density oscillation for the condensates confined in the magnetic trap. We find that, due to the confinement of the magnetic trap, the interference effect is much stronger than that of the experiment induced by Pedri et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett, {\bf 87}, 220401), where the magnetic trap is switched off too. The interaction correction to the interference effect is also discussed for the density distribution of the central peak.

Wave function of string and membrane and spacetime geometry

A first-quantized string (and membrane) theory is developed here by using a general wave function of the string (and membrane), analogously to the first-quantized quantum theory of a point particle. From the general wave function of the string (and membrane), the properties of the string (and membrane) such as its relation to Bosons, Fermions and spacetime are investigated. The string and membrane wave functions are found to be very useful and we can deduce Klein-Gordon equation, Dirac equation and the fundamental property of the spacetime from this new starting point.

Phase diffusion of Bose-Einstein Condensation close to zero temperature

The correlation function of the quantum fluctuations due to collective excitations is calculated and used to investigate the phase diffusion of a Bose-Einstein condensate close to zero temperature. It is shown that the phase diffusion time of the condensate is much longer than the result obtained by assuming that the correlation time of the quantum fluctuations is infinity.

Statistical Properties of Interacting Bose Gases in Quasi-2D Harmonic Traps

The analytical probability distribution of the quasi-2D (and purely 2D) ideal and interacting Bose gas are investigated by using a canonical ensemble approach. Using the analytical probability distribution of the condensate, the statistical properties such as the mean occupation number and particle number fluctuations of the condensate are calculated. Researches show that there is a continuous crossover of the statistical properties from a quasi-2D to a purely 2D ideal or interacting gases. Different from the case of a 3D Bose gas, the interaction between atoms changes in a deep way the nature of the particle number fluctuations.

Probability Distributions and Particle Number Fluctuations of Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensates in Different Dimensions

The analytical probability distribution of finite systems obeying Bose-Einstein statistics in one, two, and three dimensions are investigated by using a canonical ensemble approach. Starting from the canonical partition function of the system, a unified approach is provided to study the probability distribution of a condensate for various confinements and in different dimensions. Based on the probability distribution function, it is straightforward to obtain the mean ground state occupation number and particle number fluctuations of the condensate. It is found that the particle number fluctuations in a trapped Bose gas are strongly dependent on the type of confining potential and on the dimensionality of the system.

Canonical Statistics of Trapped Ideal and Interacting Bose Gases

The mean ground state occupation number and condensate fluctuations of interacting and non-interacting Bose gases confined in a harmonic trap are considered by using a canonical ensemble approach. To obtain the mean ground state occupation number and the condensate fluctuations, an analytical description for the probability distribution function of the condensate is provided directly starting from the analysis of the partition function of the system. For the ideal Bose gas, the probability distribution function is found to be a Gaussian one for the case of the harmonic trap. For the interacting Bose gas, using a unified approach the condensate fluctuations are calculated based on the lowest-order perturbation method and on Bogoliubov theory. It is found that the condensate fluctuations based on the lowest-order perturbation theory follow the law $ \sim N$, while the fluctuations based on Bogoliubov theory behave as $N^{4/3}$.

Fluctuations of the Condensate in Ideal and Interacting Bose Gases

We investigate the fluctuations of the condensate in the ideal and weakly interacting Bose gases confined in a box of volume V within canonical ensemble. Canonical ensemble is developed to describe the behavior of the fluctuations when different methods of approximation to the weakly interacting Bose gases are used. Research shows that the fluctuations of the condensate exhibit anomalous behavior for the interacting Bose gas confined in a box.

Critical Temperature and Condensate Fraction of the Trapped Interacting Bose Gas with Finite-size Effects

The critical temperature and condensate fraction of a trapped interacting Bose gas are investigated when both atom-atom interaction and finite-size effects are taken into account. Canonical ensemble is used to obtain the equations on the condensate fraction for the trapped interacting Bose gas near and below the critical temperature. In our approaches corrections due to atom-atom interaction and finite-size effects are obtained simultaneously for the critical temperature and condensate fraction of the system. Analytical high-order correction to the condensate fraction is given in this work.
