The Asymmetric Hamming Bidistance and Distributions over Binary Asymmetric Channels

The binary asymmetric channel is a model for practical communication systems where the error probabilities for symbol transitions $0\rightarrow 1$ and $1\rightarrow0$ differ substantially. In this paper, we introduce the notion of asymmetric Hamming bidistance (AHB) and its two-dimensional distribution, which separately captures directional discrepancies between codewords. This finer characterization enables a more discriminative analysis of decoding the error probabilities for maximum-likelihood decoding (MLD), particularly when conventional measures, such as weight distributions and existing discrepancy-based bounds, fail to distinguish code performance. Building on this concept, we derive a new upper bound on the average error probability for binary codes under MLD and show that, in general, it is incomparable with the two existing bounds derived by Cotardo and Ravagnani (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 68 (5), 2022). To demonstrate its applicability, we compute the complete AHB distributions for several families of codes, including two-weight and three-weight projective codes (with the zero codeword removed) via strongly regular graphs and 3-class association schemes, as well as nonlinear codes constructed from symmetric balanced incomplete block designs (SBIBDs).

Rank and pairs of Rank and Dimension of Kernel of $\mathbb{Z}_p\mathbb{Z}_{p^2}$-linear codes

A code $C$ is called $\mathbb{Z}_p\mathbb{Z}_{p^2}$-linear if it is the Gray image of a $\mathbb{Z}_p\mathbb{Z}_{p^2}$-additive code. For any prime number $p$ larger than $3$, the bounds of the rank of $\mathbb{Z}_p\mathbb{Z}_{p^2}$-linear codes are given. For each value of the rank and the pairs of rank and the dimension of the kernel of $\mathbb{Z}_p\mathbb{Z}_{p^2}$-linear codes, we give detailed construction of the corresponding codes. Finally, as an example, the rank and the dimension of the kernel of $\mathbb{Z}_5\mathbb{Z}_{25}$-linear codes are studied.

$\mathbb{Z}_p\mathbb{Z}_{p^2}$-linear codes: rank and kernel

A code $C$ is called $\Z_p\Z_{p^2}$-linear if it is the Gray image of a $\Z_p\Z_{p^2}$-additive code, where $p>2$ is prime. In this paper, the rank and the dimension of the kernel of $\Z_p\Z_{p^2}$-linear codes are studied. Two bounds of the rank of a $\Z_3\Z_{9}$-linear code and the dimension of the kernel of a $\Z_p\Z_{p^2}$-linear code are given, respectively. For each value of these bounds, we give detailed construction of the corresponding code. Finally, pairs of rank and the dimension of the kernel of $\Z_3\Z_{9}$-linear codes are also considered.

Graphine: A Dataset for Graph-aware Terminology Definition Generation

Precisely defining the terminology is the first step in scientific communication. Developing neural text generation models for definition generation can circumvent the labor-intensity curation, further accelerating scientific discovery. Unfortunately, the lack of large-scale terminology definition dataset hinders the process toward definition generation. In this paper, we present a large-scale terminology definition dataset Graphine covering 2,010,648 terminology definition pairs, spanning 227 biomedical subdisciplines. Terminologies in each subdiscipline further form a directed acyclic graph, opening up new avenues for developing graph-aware text generation models. We then proposed a novel graph-aware definition generation model Graphex that integrates transformer with graph neural network. Our model outperforms existing text generation models by exploiting the graph structure of terminologies. We further demonstrated how Graphine can be used to evaluate pretrained language models, compare graph representation learning methods and predict sentence granularity. We envision Graphine to be a unique resource for definition generation and many other NLP tasks in biomedicine.

Self-orthogonal codes over a non-unital ring and combinatorial matrices

There is a local ring $E$ of order $4,$ without identity for the multiplication, defined by generators and relations as $E=\langle a,b \mid 2a=2b=0,\, a^2=a,\, b^2=b,\,ab=a,\, ba=b\rangle.$ We study a special construction of self-orthogonal codes over $E,$ based on combinatorial matrices related to two-class association schemes, Strongly Regular Graphs (SRG), and Doubly Regular Tournaments (DRT). We construct quasi self-dual codes over $E,$ and Type IV codes, that is, quasi self-dual codes whose all codewords have even Hamming weight. All these codes can be represented as formally self-dual additive codes over $\F_4.$ The classical invariant theory bound for the weight enumerators of this class of codesimproves the known bound on the minimum distance of Type IV codes over $E.$

On the number of frequency hypercubes $F^n(4;2,2)$

A frequency $n$-cube $F^n(4;2,2)$ is an $n$-dimensional $4$-by-...-by-$4$ array filled by $0$s and $1$s such that each line contains exactly two $1$s. We classify the frequency $4$-cubes $F^4(4;2,2)$, find a testing set of size $25$ for $F^3(4;2,2)$, and derive an upper bound on the number of $F^n(4;2,2)$. Additionally, for any $n$ greater than $2$, we construct an $F^n(4;2,2)$ that cannot be refined to a latin hypercube, while each of its sub-$F^{n-1}(4;2,2)$ can. Keywords: frequency hypercube, frequency square, latin hypercube, testing set, MDS code
