Two-leg fermionic Hubbard ladder system in the presence of state-dependent hopping

We study a two-leg fermionic Hubbard ladder model with a state-dependent hopping. We find that, contrary to the case without a state-dependent hopping, for which the system has a superfluid nature regardless of the sign of the interaction at incommensurate filling, in the presence of such a hopping a spin-triplet superfluid, spin- density wave and charge-density wave phases emerge. We examine our results in the light of recent experiments on periodically-driven optical lattices in cold atoms. We give protocols allowing us to realize the spin-triplet superfluid elusive in the cold atoms.

Coleman-Weinberg mechanism in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

It is argued that a continuous quantum phase transition between different ordered phases in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates predicted by the mean-field theory is vulnerable to quantum fluctuations. By analyzing Lee-Huang-Yang corrections in the condensate, we demonstrate that the so-called Coleman-Weinberg mechanism takes place in such a transition, that is, the transition becomes of the first order by quantum fluctuations. A jump to be expected in this first-order transition is induced by a correction from density fluctuations despite a transition between different magnetic properties with keeping condensation. We exemplify this with an experimentally relevant case and show that a measurement of a condensate depletion can be utilized to confirm the first-order transition.

Quantum Exact Non-Abelian Vortices in Non-relativistic Theories

Non-Abelian vortices arise when a non-Abelian global symmetry is exact in the ground state but spontaneously broken in the vicinity of their cores. In this case, there appear (non-Abelian) Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes confined and propagating along the vortex. In relativistic theories, the Coleman-Mermin-Wagner theorem forbids the existence of a spontaneous symmetry breaking, or a long-range order, in 1+1 dimensions: quantum corrections restore the symmetry along the vortex and the NG modes acquire a mass gap. We show that in non-relativistic theories NG modes with quadratic dispersion relation confined on a vortex can remain gapless at quantum level. We provide a concrete and experimentally realizable example of a three-component Bose-Einstein condensate with U(1) x U(2) symmetry. We first show, at the classical level, the existence of S^3 = S^1 |x S^2 (S^1 fibered over S^2) NG modes associated to the breaking U(2) -> U(1) on vortices, where S^1 and S^2 correspond to type I and II NG modes, respectively. We then show, by using a Bethe ansatz technique, that the U(1) symmetry is restored, while the SU(2) symmery remains broken non-pertubatively at quantum level. Accordingly, the U(1) NG mode turns into a c=1 conformal field theory, the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, while the S^2 NG mode remains gapless, describing a ferromagnetic liquid. This allows the vortex to be genuinely non-Abelian at quantum level.

Unconventional superfluidity in quasi-one-dimensional systems

We show that an unconventional superfluid triggered by spin-orbit coupling is realized for repulsively interacting quasi-one-dimensional fermions. A competition between spin-singlet and -triplet pairings occurs due to the breaking of inversion symmetry. We show that both superfluid correlations decay algebraically with the same exponent except for special coupling constants for which a dominant superfluid is controlled by the spin-orbit coupling. We also discuss a possible experiment to observe such phases with cold atoms.

Competition of spin and charge excitations in the Hubbard model

Motivated by recent experiments with ultracold fermionic atoms in optical lattices, we study finite temperature magnetic correlations, as singlet and triplet correlations, and the double occupancy in the one-dimensional Hubbard model. We point out that for intermediate interaction strengths the double occupancy has an intriguing doubly non-monotonic temperature dependence due to the competition between spin and charge modes, related to the Pomeranchuk effect. Furthermore, we determine properties of magnetic correlations in the temperature regimes relevant for current cold atom experiments and discuss effects of the trap on spatially integrated observables. We estimate the entropy and the temperature reached in the experiment by Greif et al., Science 340, 1307 (2013).

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy and characterization of magnetic phases for spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

The response of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates to dynamical modulation of magnetic fields is discussed with linear response theory. As an experimentally measurable quantity, the energy absorption rate (EAR) is considered, and the response function is found to access quadratic spin correlations which come from the perturbation of the quadratic Zeeman term. By applying our formalism to spin-1 condensates, we demonstrate that the EAR spectrum as a function of the modulation frequency is able to characterize the different magnetically ordered phases.

Spin-Depairing Transition of Attractive Fermi Gases on a Ring Driven by Synthetic Gauge Fields

Motivated by the recent experimental realization of synthetic gauge fields in ultracold atoms, we investigate one-dimensional attractive Fermi gases with a time-dependent gauge flux on the spin sector. By combining the methods of the Bethe ansatz with complex twists and Landau-Dykhne, it is shown that a spin-depairing transition occurs, which may represent a nonequilibrium transition from fermionic superfluids to normal states with spin currents caused by a many-body quantum tunneling. For the case of the Hubbard ring at half filling, our finding forms a dual concept with the dielectric breakdown of the Mott insulator discussed in Phys. Rev. B 81, 033103 (2010). We analyze cases of arbitrary filling and continuum model, and show how the filling affects the transition probability.

Higgs Mechanism with Type-II Nambu-Goldstone Bosons at Finite Chemical Potential

When the spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs for systems without Lorentz covariance, there arises possible mismatch, $N_{\rm NG} < N_{\rm BG}$, between numbers of Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons ($N_{\rm NG}$) and the numbers of broken generators ($N_{\rm BG}$. In such a situation, so-called type-II NG bosons emerge. We study how the gauge bosons acquire masses through the Higgs mechanism under this mismatch by employing gauge theories with complex scalar field at finite chemical potential and by enforcing "charge" neutrality. To separate the physical spectra from unphysical ones, the $R_ξ$ gauge is adopted. Not only massless NG bosons but also massive scalar bosons generated by the chemical potential are absorbed into spatial components of the gauge bosons. Although the chemical potential induces a non-trivial mixings among the scalar bosons and temporal components of the gauge bosons, it does not affect the structure of the physical spectra, so that the total number of physical modes is not modified even for $N_{\rm NG} < N_{\rm BG}$.

Quasi-Nambu-Goldstone Modes in Bose-Einstein Condensates

We show that quasi-Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes, which play prominent roles in high energy physics but have been elusive experimentally, can be realized with atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. The quasi-NG modes emerge when the symmetry of a ground state is larger than that of the Hamiltonian. When they appear, the conventional vacuum manifold should be enlarged. Consequently topological defects that are stable within the conventional vacuum manifold become unstable and decay by emitting the quasi-NG modes. Contrary to conventional wisdom, however, we show that the topological defects are stabilized by quantum fluctuations that make the quasi-NG modes massive, thereby suppressing their emission.

Bogoliubov Theory and Lee-Huang-Yang Corrections in Spin-1 and Spin-2 Bose-Einstein Condensates in the Presence of the Quadratic Zeeman Effect

We develop Bogoliubov theory of spin-1 and spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in the presence of a quadratic Zeeman effect, and derive the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) corrections to the ground-state energy, sound velocity, and quantum depletion. We investigate all the phases of spin-1 and spin-2 BECs that can be realized experimentally. We also examine the stability of each phase against quantum fluctuations and the quadratic Zeeman effect. Furthermore, we discuss a relationship between the number of symmetry generators that are spontaneously broken and that of Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes. It is found that in the spin-2 nematic phase there are special Bogoliubov modes that have gapless linear dispersion relations but do not belong to the NG modes.

Dynamical symmetry in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We demonstrate that dynamical symmetry plays a crucial role in determining the structure of the eigenspectra of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). In particular, the eigenspectra of spin- 1 and spin-2 BECs in the single-mode approximation are shown to be completely determined by dynamical symmetries, where a spin-2 BEC corresponds to the U(5) limit of the interacting boson model in nuclear physics. The eigenspectrum of a spin-3 BEC is solved analytically for a specific class of coupling constants, while it is shown that dynamical symmetry alone is not enough to determine the spectrum for arbitrary coupling constants. We also study the low-lying eigenspectra of spin-1 and spin-2 BECs in the absence of external magnetic field, and find, in particular, that the quasidegenerate spectra emerge for antiferromagnetic and cyclic phases. This implies that these systems are highly susceptible to external perturbations and may undergo symmetry-breaking transitions to other states upon increasing the size of system.
