Radiative corrections to the leptonic Dirac CP-violating phase

Since the smallest leptonic mixing angle theta_{13} has been measured to be relatively large, it is quite promising to constrain or determine the leptonic Dirac CP-violating phase delta in future neutrino oscillation experiments. Given some typical values of delta = pi/2, pi, and 3pi/2 at the low-energy scale, as well as current experimental results of the other neutrino parameters, we perform a systematic study of the radiative corrections to delta by using the one-loop renormalization group equations in the minimal supersymmetric standard model and the universal extra-dimensional model. It turns out that delta is rather stable against radiative corrections in both models, except for the minimal supersymmetric standard model with a very large value of tan beta. Both cases of Majorana and Dirac neutrinos are discussed. In addition, we use the preliminary indication of delta = (1.08^{+0.28}_{-0.31}) pi or delta = (1.67^{+0.37}_{-0.77}) pi from the latest global-fit analyses of data from neutrino oscillation experiments to illustrate how it will be modified by radiative corrections.

Neutrino Mixing Angles from Texture Zeros of the Lepton Mass Matrices

Taking into account the latest neutrino oscillation data, we study texture zeros of the lepton mass matrices. Assuming the Dirac neutrino mass matrix M_D, the charged-lepton mass matrix M_l and the mass matrix of heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos M_R to have three texture zeros, we show that the observed neutrino mixing angles can naturally be obtained. The phenomenological implications for the neutrino mass spectrum, the CP-violating phases, the tritium beta decay and the neutrinoless double-beta decay are explored.

Impacts of the Higgs mass on vacuum stability, running fermion masses and two-body Higgs decays

The latest results of the ATLAS and CMS experiments indicate 116 GeV \lesssim M_H \lesssim 131 GeV and 115 GeV \lesssim M_H \lesssim 127 GeV, respectively, for the mass of the Higgs boson in the standard model (SM) at the 95% confidence level. In particular, both experiments point to a preferred narrow mass range M_H \simeq (124 ... 126) GeV. We examine the impact of this preliminary result of M_H on the SM vacuum stability by using the two-loop renormalization-group equations (RGEs), and arrive at the cutoff scale Λ_VS \sim 4 \times 10^{12} GeV (for M_H = 125 GeV, M_t = 172.9 GeV and α_s(M_Z) = 0.1184) where the absolute stability of the SM vacuum is lost and some kind of new physics might take effect. We update the values of running lepton and quark masses at some typical energy scales, including the ones characterized by M_H, 1 TeV and Λ_VS, with the help of the two-loop RGEs. The branching ratios of some important two-body Higgs decay modes, such as H \to b\bar{b}, H \to τ^+ τ^-, H\to γγ, H\to W^+ W^- and H \to Z Z, are also recalculated by inputting the values of relevant particle masses at M_H.

Lepton Flavor Mixing Pattern and Neutrino Mass Matrix after the Daya Bay Experiment

The Daya Bay Collaboration has recently observed neutrino oscillations in the nu_e-bar -> nu_e-bar disappearance channel, indicating that sin^2 theta_13 = 0.024 +(-) 0.005 (1 sigma) and theta_13 = 0 is already excluded at the 5.2 sigma confidence level. Now three neutrino mixing angles have been measured to a good degree of accuracy (theta_12 ~ 34^\circ, theta_23 ~ 45^\circ and theta_13 ~ 9^\circ). Motivated by these experimental results, we propose a novel lepton flavor mixing pattern, which predicts sin^2 theta_23 = 1/2, sin^2 theta_12 = (2+\sqrt{3})/(10+\sqrt{3}) ~ 0.318 and sin^2 theta_13 = (2-\sqrt{3})/12 ~ 0.022, together with a maximal CP-violating phase delta = 90^\circ. The leptonic CP violation characterized by the Jarlskog invariant {\cal J} = \sqrt{6}/72 ~ 3.4 % is promising to be measured in the future long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. Furthermore, we point out that a generalized version of mu-tau symmetry may exist in the neutrino sector and can give rise to the aforementioned mixing pattern. The possible realizations in the seesaw models with discrete flavor symmetries are also discussed.

Systematic search for successful lepton mixing patterns with nonzero theta_13

We perform a systematic search for simple but viable lepton mixing patterns. Our main criterion is that the mixing matrix can be parameterized by three rotation angles, which are simple fractions of pi. These simple rotation angles possess exact expressions for their sines and cosines, and often arise in the flavor symmetry models. All possible parameterizations of the mixing matrix are taken into account. In total, twenty successful mixing patterns are found to be consistent with the latest neutrino oscillation data (including the recent T2K results) in the CP conserving case, whereas fifteen mixing patterns are allowed in the maximal CP violating case. Potential radiative corrections to the constant mixing patterns are also calculated by solving the renormalization group equations.

Radiative corrections and explicit perturbations to the tetra-maximal neutrino mixing with large theta_13

The tetra-maximal neutrino mixing pattern predicts a relatively large reactor mixing angle theta_13 \approx 8.4^\circ, which is in good agreement with the latest best-fit value theta_13 = 9^\circ. However, its prediction for theta_12 \approx 30.4^\circ is inconsistent with current oscillation data at the 3sigma C.L. We show that explicit perturbations to the tetra-maximal mixing can naturally enhance theta_12 to its best-fit value theta_12 = 34^\circ. Furthermore, we demonstrate that if the tetra-maximal mixing is produced by a certain flavor symmetry at a high-energy scale Lambda = 10^14 GeV, significant radiative corrections in the minimal supersymmetric standard model can modify theta_12 to be compatible with experimental data at the electroweak scale Lambda_EW = 10^2 GeV. The predictions for theta_13 \approx 8.4^\circ and theta_23 = 45^\circ, as well as the CP-violating phases rho = sigma = -delta = 90^\ciic, are rather stable against radiative corrections.

Relatively large theta13 and nearly maximal theta23 from the approximate S3 symmetry of lepton mass matrices

We apply the permutation symmetry S_3 to both charged-lepton and neutrino mass matrices, and suggest a useful symmetry-breaking scheme, in which the flavor symmetry is explicitly broken down via S_3 -> Z_3 -> nothing in the charged-lepton sector and via S_3 -> Z_2 -> nothing in the neutrino sector. Such a two-stage breaking scenario is reasonable in the sense that both Z_3 and Z_2 are the subgroups of S_3, while Z_3 and Z_2 only have a trivial subgroup. In this scenario, we can obtain a relatively large value of the smallest neutrino mixing angle, e.g., theta_{13} ~ 9^\circ, which is compatible with the recent result from T2K experiment and will be precisely measured in the ongoing Double Chooz and Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiments. Moreover, the maximal atmospheric mixing angle theta_{23} ~ 45^\circ can also be obtained while the best-fit value of solar mixing angle theta_{12} ~ 34^\circ is assumed, which cannot be achieved in previous S_3 symmetry models.

Two-zero Textures of the Majorana Neutrino Mass Matrix and Current Experimental Tests

In view of the latest T2K and MINOS neutrino oscillation data which hint at a relatively large theta_13, we perform a systematic study of the Majorana neutrino mass matrix M_nu with two independent texture zeros. We show that three neutrino masses (m_1, m_2, m_3) and three CP-violating phases (delta, rho, sigma) can fully be determined from two neutrino mass-squared differences (delta m^2, Delta m^2) and three flavor mixing angles (theta_12, theta_23, theta_13). We find that seven patterns of M_nu (i.e., A_{1,2}, B_{1,2,3,4} and C) are compatible with current experimental data at the 3-sigma level, but the parameter space of each pattern is more strictly constrained than before. We demonstrate that the texture zeros of M_nu are stable against the one-loop quantum corrections, and there exists a permutation symmetry between Patterns A_1 and A_2, B_1 and B_2 or B_3 and B_4. Phenomenological implications of M_nu on the neutrinoless double-beta decay and leptonic CP violation are discussed, and a realization of those texture zeros by means of the Z_n flavor symmetries is illustrated.

Comment on astrophysical consequences of a neutrinophilic 2HDM

Several authors have pointed out that the scalar-mediated interaction of neutrinos in a neutriophilic two-Higgs-doublet model (nu2HDM) can be as strong as electromagnetic interaction [1-3]. We show that the coupling constants of neutrino-scalar interaction are actually restricted to be y_i < 1.5 x 10^{-3} by supernova neutrino observation, and further constrained to be y_i < 2.3 x 10^{-4} by precision measurements of acoustic peaks of the cosmic microwave background. Based on the energy-loss argument for supernova cores, we derive a slightly more restrictive bound y_i < 3.5 x 10^{-5}. Therefore, the nu2HDM has lost its spirit of explaining tiny Dirac neutrino masses while keeping neutrino Yukawa couplings of order one.

The Glashow resonance as a discriminator of UHE cosmic neutrinos originating from p-gamma and p-p collisions

We re-examine the interesting possibility of utilizing the Glashow resonance (GR) channel nu_ebar + e^- to W^- to anything to discriminate between the UHE cosmic neutrinos originating from p-gamma and pp collisions in an optically thin source of cosmic rays. We propose a general parametrization of the initial neutrino flavor composition by allowing the ratios Phi^{p gamma}_{pi^-}/Phi^{p gamma}_{pi^+} and Phi^{pp}_{pi^-}/Phi^{pp}_{pi^+} to slightly deviate from their conventional values. A relationship between the typical source parameter kappa = (Phi^{p gamma}_{pi^+} + Phi^{p gamma}_{pi^-})/(Phi^{pp}_{pi^+} + Phi^{pp}_{pi^-} + Phi^{p gamma}_{pi^+} + Phi^{p gamma}_{pi^-}) and the working observable of the GR R_0 = Phi^T_{nu_ebar}/ (Phi^T_{nu_mu} + Phi^T_{nu_mu}) at a neutrino telescope is derived, and the numerical dependence of R_0 on kappa is illustrated by taking account of the latest experimental data on three neutrino mixing angles. It is shown that a measurement of R_0 is in principle possible to identify the pure p-gamma interaction (kappa =1), the pure pp interaction (kappa =0) or a mixture of both of them (0 < kappa < 1) at a given source of UHE cosmic neutrinos. The event rate of the GR signal against the background is also estimated.

Supernova bound on keV-mass sterile neutrinos reexamined

Active-sterile neutrino mixing is strongly constrained for m_s > 100 keV to avoid excessive energy losses from supernova cores. For smaller m_s, matter effects suppress the effective mixing angle except for a resonant range of energies where it is enhanced. We study the case of ν_tau-ν_s-mixing where a ν_tau-\barν_tau asymmetry builds up due to the strong excess of ν_s over \barν_s emission or vice versa, reducing the overall emission rate. In the warm dark matter range m_s < 10 keV the mixing angle is essentially unconstrained.

Broken S_3 Flavor Symmetry of Leptons and Quarks: Mass Spectra and Flavor Mixing Patterns

We apply the discrete S_3 flavor symmetry to both lepton and quark sectors of the standard model extended by introducing one Higgs triplet and realizing the type-II seesaw mechanism for finite neutrino masses. The resultant mass matrices of charged leptons (M_l), neutrinos (M_nu), up-type quarks (M_u) and down-type quarks (M_d) have a universal form consisting of two terms: one is proportional to the identity matrix I and the other is proportional to the democracy matrix D. We argue that the textures of M_l, M_u and M_d are dominated by the D term, while that of M_nu is dominated by the I term. This hypothesis implies a near mass degeneracy of three neutrinos and can naturally explain why the mass matrices of charged fermions are strongly hierarchical, why the quark mixing matrix is close to I and why the lepton mixing matrix contains two large angles. We discuss a rather simple perturbation ansatz to break the S_3 symmetry and obtain more realistic mass spectra of leptons and quarks as well as their flavor mixing patterns. We stress that the I term, which used to be ignored from M_l, M_u and M_d, is actually important because it can significantly modify the smallest lepton flavor mixing angle theta_13 or three quark flavor mixing angles.

The Minimal Seesaw Model at the TeV Scale

We point out that the minimal seesaw model can provide a natural framework to accommodate tiny neutrino masses, while its experimental testability and notable predictiveness are still maintained. This possibility is based on the observation that two heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos in the minimal seesaw model may naturally emerge as a pseudo-Dirac fermion. In a specific scenario, we show that the tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing can be produced, and only the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy is allowed. The low-energy phenomena, including non-unitarity effects in neutrino oscillations, neutrinoless double-beta decays and rare lepton-flavor-violating decays of charged leptons l_alpha to l_beta + gamma, have been explored. The collider signatures of the heavy singlet neutrino are also briefly discussed.

Testing the Realistic Seesaw Model with Two Heavy Majorana Neutrinos at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

In the conventional type-(I+II) seesaw model, the effective mass matrix of three known light neutrinos is given by M_nu = M_L - M_D M^{-1}_R M^T_D in the leading-order approximation. We propose an intriguing scenario, in which the structural cancellation condition M_D M^{-1}_R M^T_D = 0 is guaranteed by the A_4 x Z_2 flavor symmetry. As a consequence, neutrino masses are mainly generated by the Higgs triplet M_nu = M_L, while the neutrino mixing matrix is non-unitary and takes on the nearly tri-bimaximal pattern. A discriminating feature of this scenario from the pure type-II seesaw model is that the lepton-number-violating signatures induced by the heavy Majorana neutrinos can be discovered at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We calculate the total cross section of the same-sign dilepton events pp to l^+(-)_alpha N_i to l^+(-)_alpha l^+(-)_beta jj (for i=1, 2 and alpha, beta = e, mu, tau), and emphasize the significant interference of the contributions from two different heavy Majorana neutrinos. The background from the standard model and the kinematic cuts used to reduce it have been considered. The possible way to distinguish between the signals from heavy Majorana neutrinos and those from doubly-charged Higgs bosons is briefly discussed.

Multiple seesaw mechanisms of neutrino masses at the TeV scale

In pursuit of a balance between theoretical naturalness and experimental testability, we propose two classes of multiple seesaw mechanisms at the TeV scale to understand the origin of tiny neutrino masses. They are novel extensions of the canonical and double seesaw mechanisms, respectively, by introducing even and odd numbers of gauge-singlet fermions and scalars. It is thanks to a proper implementation of the global U(1)xZ_2N symmetry that the overall neutrino mass matrix in either class has a suggestive nearest-neighbor-interaction pattern. We briefly discuss possible consequences of these TeV-scale seesaw scenarios, which can hopefully be explored in the upcoming Large Hadron Collider and precision neutrino experiments, and present a simple but instructive example of model building.

Correlative signatures of heavy Majorana neutrinos and doubly-charged Higgs bosons at the Large Hadron Collider

We explore an intriguing possibility to test the type-II seesaw mechanism of neutrino mass generation at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We show that the lepton-number-violating signatures of heavy Majorana neutrinos N_i (for i=1, 2, 3) and doubly-charged Higgs bosons H^++(H^--) can be closely correlated with each other in a class of TeV-scale type-II seesaw models. Taking the minimal version of such models for example, we calculate the cross sections of pp -> l^+_αl^+_βX (l^-_αl^-_βX) processes mediated separately by N_1 and H^++(H^--), and illustrate their nontrivial correlation at the LHC.

Implications of Leptonic Unitarity Violation at Neutrino Telescopes

A measurement of the ultrahigh-energy (UHE) cosmic neutrinos at a km^3-size neutrino telescope will open a new window to constrain the 3 x 3 neutrino mixing matrix V and probe possible new physics. We point out that it is in principle possible to examine the non-unitarity of V, which is naturally expected in a class of seesaw models with one or more TeV-scale Majorana neutrinos, by using neutrino telescopes. Considering the UHE neutrinos produced from the decays of charged pions arising from proton-proton and (or) proton-gamma collisions at a distant astrophysical source, we show that their flavor ratios at a terrestrial neutrino telescope may deviate from the democratic flavor distribution ϕ^T_e : ϕ^T_μ: ϕ^T_τ= 1 : 1 : 1 due to the seesaw-induced unitarity violation of V. Its effect can be as large as several percent and can serve for an illustration of how sensitive a neutrino telescope should be to this kind of new physics.

Updated Values of Running Quark and Lepton Masses

Reliable values of quark and lepton masses are important for model building at a fundamental energy scale, such as the Fermi scale M_Z \approx 91.2 GeV and the would-be GUT scale Λ_GUT \sim 2 \times 10^16 GeV. Using the latest data given by the Particle Data Group, we update the running quark and charged-lepton masses at a number of interesting energy scales below and above M_Z. In particular, we take into account the possible new physics scale (μ\sim 1 TeV) to be explored by the LHC and the typical seesaw scales (μ\sim 10^9 GeV and μ\sim 10^12 GeV) which might be relevant to the generation of neutrino masses. For illustration, the running masses of three light Majorana neutrinos are also calculated. Our up-to-date table of running fermion masses are expected to be very useful for the study of flavor dynamics at various energy scales.
