Differentiation of correlated fluctuations in site energy on excitation energy transfer in photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes

One of the promising approaches to revealing the photosynthetic efficiency of close to one unit is to investigate the quantum regime of excitation energy transfer (EET). The majority of studies, however, have concluded that different pigment molecules contribute equally to EET, rather than differently. We investigate the roles of different site-energies in EET by evaluating the correlated fluctuations of site-energies in two adjacent pigment molecules (namely Site 1 and Site 2), and we attempt to demonstrate different site roles in EET with the j-V characteristics and power via a photosynthetic quantum heat engine (QHE) model rather than an actual photosynthetic protein. The results show that fluctuations at Site 1 (the pigment molecule absorbing solar photons) provide ascending and then descending EET. At Site 2, the EET is reduced through the use of correlated fluctuation increments (the pigment molecule acting as the charge-transfer excited state). Furthermore, when investigating the correlated fluctuations at Site 2, the different gap differences of the output terminal play a positive role in EET, but a sharply decreasing EET process is also achieved with less correlated fluctuations at Site 2 compared to those at Site 1.The findings show that different pigment molecules contribute differently to EET. The significance of this work is that it not only clarifies the roles of different pigment molecules in EET, but it also deepens our understanding of the fundamental physics of EET as it transports through the molecular chain in photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes. Furthermore, the results are appropriate to the EET in organic semiconductors, photovoltaic devices, and quantum networks, when these systems couple to the environment of photons via the vibrational motion of sites in the molecular chain.

Photovoltaic properties evaluated by its thermodynamic evolution in a double quantum dot photocell

Obtaining the physical mechanism of photoelectric transfer in quantum-dot (QD) photocells may be one strategy to boost the photovoltaic conversion efficiency. In this work, we attempted to formulate a novel theoretical approach to evaluate photocells' performance via evaluating their thermodynamic evolution during the photoelectric conversion process in a double quantum dot (DQD) photocell model. Results demonstrate that the thermodynamic-related quantities can reflect the law of photovoltaic dynamics, i.e., the photoelectric transfer properties can be evaluated by the heat currents indirectly. The merit of this work not only expands our understanding of the physical law of heat currents in the photoelectric transport process, but it may also propose a new method for optimizing photoelectric conversion efficiency in a DQD photocell.

Delayed response to the photovoltaic performance in a double quantum dot photocell with spatially correlated fluctuation

A viable strategy for enhancing photovoltaic performance in a double quantum dot (DQD) photocell is to comprehend the underlying quantum physical regime of charge transfer. This work explores the photovoltaic performance dependent spatially correlated fluctuation in a DQD photocell. A suggested DQD photocell model was used to examine the effects of spatially correlated variation on charge transfer and output photovoltaic efficiency. The charge transfer process and the process of reaching peak solar efficiency were both significantly delayed as a result of the spatially correlated fluctuation, and the anti-spatial correlation fluctuation also resulted in lower output photovoltaic efficiency. Further results revealed that some structural parameters, such as gap difference and tunneling coefficient within two dots, could suppress the delayed response, and a natural adjustment feature was demonstrated on the delayed response in this DQD photocell model. Subsequent investigation verified that the delayed response was caused by the spatial correlation fluctuation, which slowed the generative process of noise-induced coherence, which had previously been proven to improve quantum photovoltaic performance in quantum photocells. While anti-spatial correlation fluctuation and a hotter thermal ambient environment could diminish the condition for noise-induced coherence, as demonstrated by the reduced photovoltaic capabilities in this suggested DQD photocell model. As a result, we expect that regulated noise-induced coherence, via spatially correlated fluctuation, will have a major impact on photovoltaic qualities in a DQD photocell system. The discovery of its underlying physical regime of quantum fluctuation will broaden and deepen understanding of quantum features of electron transfer, as well as provide some indications concerning quantum techniques for high efficiency DQD solar cells.

Photosynthetic properties assisted by the quantum entanglement in two adjacent pigment molecules

The quantum dynamics of entanglement is widely revealed in photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes. Different from the previous work, we explore the properties of exciton transport and photosynthesis assisted by the quantum entanglement in two adjacent pigment molecules, which are measured by the population dynamics behaviors, the $j$-$V$ characteristics and by the output power via a photosynthetic quantum heat engine (QHE) model. A more robust exciton transport dynamic behavior is compared with those without quantum entanglement, and the photosynthetic characteristics evaluated by the output current and power were proved to be enhanced by the quantum entanglement at different ambient temperatures. These results may point toward the possibility for artificial photosynthetic nanostructures inspired by this quantum biological systems.

Photoexcited carriers transfer properties in a doped double quantum dots photocell

Identifying the behavior of photoexcited carriers is one method for empirically boosting their transfer efficiencies in doped double quantum dots (DQDs) photocells. The photoexcited carriers transfer qualities were assessed in this study by the output current, power, and output efficiency in the multi-photon absorption process for a doped DQDs photocell, and an optimization technique is theoretically obtained for this proposed photocell model. The results show that some structure parameters caused by doping, such as gaps, incoherent tunneling coupling, and symmetry of structure between two vertically aligned QDs, can remarkably control the photoexcited carriers transfer properties, and that slightly increasing the ambient temperature around room temperature is beneficial to the transfer performance in this doping DQDs photocell model. Thus, our scheme proves a way to optimized strategies for DQDs photocell.

The suppressed radiative recombination rate in a quantum photocell with three electron donors

The radiative recombination of electron-hole pairs represents a great challenge to the photon-to-charge efficiency in the photocell. In this paper, we investigate how to suppress radiative recombination rate (RRR) in a proposed quantum photocell with three dipole-dipole coupled and uncoupled electron donors. The results showed that the RRR could be suppressed in this photocell with three uncoupled electron donors but be enhanced with three dipole-dipole coupled electron donors by the ambient circumstance temperatures, and the increasing energy gap in the donors, the decreasing gap between the donors and acceptor inhabited the RRR with three dipole-dipole both coupled and uncoupled electron donors. When the photocell was manipulated by the electrostatic dipole-dipole coupling strength J at room temperature, the RRR was suppressed to a smaller minimum by the gap between the donors and acceptor than those by different gaps in the donors. These suppressed strategies for RRR point out some significant ways to increase the photon-to-charge efficiency and deserve the further experimental verification.

Monochromatic composite right/left handedness achieved in the quantized composite right/left handed transmission line

The macro composite right/left handedness (CRLH) accompanies the positive/negative refraction index in the higher, microwave frequency bands in the composite right/left handed transmission line (CRLH-TL), respectively. In this paper, we adjust the refraction index of a quantized CRLH-TL via the squeezed parameters and the electronic components' parameters in the thermal squeezed state, and the refraction index shows the positive/negative jumping around the squeezed angle \(φ\)=\(π\) when it operates at a single frequency, and the similar result also arises while the refraction index is manipulated by the electronic components' parameters. The monochromatic CRLH achieved here breaks through the original definition in the macro CRLH-TL and provide a new implementation for the CRLH-TL.

The manipulated left-handedness in a rare-earth-ion-doped optical fiber by the incoherent pumping field

The left-handedness was demonstrated by the simulation with a three-level quantum system in an E3+r -dopped ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF (ZBLAFN) optical fiber. And the left-handedness can be regulated by the incoherent pumping field. Our scheme may provide a solid candidate other than the coherent atomic vapour for left-handedness, and may extend the application of the rare-earth-ion-doped optical fiber in metamaterials and of the incoherent pumping light field in quantum optics.

Wider frequency domain for negative refraction index in a quantized composite right-left handed transmission line

The refraction index of the quantized lossy composite right-left handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) is deduced in the thermal coherence state. The results show that the negative refraction index (herein the left-handedness) can be implemented by the electric circuit dissipative factors(i.e., the resistances \(R\) and conductances \( G\)) in a higher frequency band (1.446GHz\(\leqω\leq \) 15GHz), and flexibly adjusted by the left-handed circuit components (\(C_l\), \(L_l\)) and the right-handed circuit components (\(C_r\), \(L_r\)) at a lower frequency (\(ω\)=0.995GHz) . The flexible adjustment for left-handedness in a wider bandwidth will be significant for the microscale circuit design of the CRLH-TL and may make the theoretical preparation for its compact applications.

Large and tunable negative refractive index via electromagnetically induced chirality in a semiconductor quantum well nanostructure

Large and tunable negative refractive index (NRI) via electromagnetically induced chirality is demonstrated in a semiconductor quantum wells (SQWs) nanostructure by using the reported experimental parameters. It is found: under the experimental results of Ref.[19], the large and controllable NRI can be theoretically obtained in the SQWs sample by modulating the coupling laser field and relative phase, and the frequency regions for NRI can also be sensitively manipulated by them, which will more increase flexibility in implementation of NRI material. The scheme rooted in the experimental results may lead a new avenue to NRI material in solid-state nanostructure.

The thermal effect on the left-handedness of the mesoscopic composite right-Left handed transmission line

Starting from the quantum fluctuation of current in the mesoscopic composite right-left handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) in the thermal Fock state, we investigate the left-handedness dependent of the frequencies, intensity and quantum fluctuations of the current field in the CRLH-TL under different thermal environment. The results show that the intensity and quantum fluctuations of current field in lower frequency bands affect the left-handedness distinctly under different thermal environment. The thermal effect on the left-handedness in the mesoscopic CRLH-TL deserves further experimental investigation in its miniaturization application.
