Realization of metallic state in 1T-TaS2 with persisting long-range order of charge density wave

Metallization of 1T-TaS2 is generally initiated at the domain boundary of charge density wave (CDW), at the expense of its long-range order. However, we demonstrate in this study that the metallization of 1T-TaS2 can be also realized without breaking the long-range CDW order upon surface alkali doping. By using scanning tunneling microscopy, we find the long-range CDW order is always persisting, and the metallization is instead associated with additional in-gap excitations. Interestingly, the in-gap excitation is near the top of the lower Hubbard band, in contrast to a conventional electron-doped Mott insulator where it is beneath the upper Hubbard band. In combination with the numerical calculations, we suggest that the appearance of the in-gap excitations near the lower Hubbard band is mainly due to the effectively reduced on-site Coulomb energy by the adsorbed alkali ions.

Itinerant topological magnons in Haldane Hubbard model with a nearly-flat electron band

We elaborate the first theoretical realization of two dimensional itinerant topological magnons, based on the quarter filled Haldane-Hubbard model with a nearly-flat electron band. By using the exact diagonalization method with a projection onto this band, we obtain the spin wave excitations over the itinerant ferromagnetic ground state. In the flatband limit, the excitation exhibits similar dispersion to the free electron band with Dirac magnons. The nonflatness of the electron band opens a topological gap at Dirac points and leads to an acoustic magnon band with a nonzero Chern number. We further show that tuning the sublattice Hubbard interactions or the next-nearest-neighbor hopping can induce a topological transition characterized by the gap closing and reopening, and the existence of the in-gap magnons on magnetic domain walls. We find an exact set of bases for magnons in the flatband limit constructed from sublattice particle-hole vectors and derive an effective model to explore the origin of the topological magnon which is attributed to the ``mass inversion mechanism''.

Experimental identification of quantum spin liquids

In condensed matter physics, there is a novel phase termed "quantum spin liquid", in which strong quantum fluctuations prevent the long-range magnetic order from being established, and so the electron spins do not form an ordered pattern but remain "liquid" like even at absolute zero temperature. Such a phase is not involved with any spontaneous symmetry breaking and local order parameter, and to understand it is beyond the conventional phase transition theory. Due to the rich physics and exotic properties of quantum spin liquids, such as the long-range entanglement and fractional quantum excitations, which are believed to hold great potentials in quantum communication and computation, they have been intensively studied since the concept was proposed in 1973 by P. W. Anderson. Currently, experimental identifications of a quantum spin liquid still remain as a great challenge. Here, we highlight some interesting experimental progress that has been made recently. We also discuss some outstanding issues and raise questions that we consider to be important for future research.

Quasiparticle Properties under Interactions in Weyl and Nodal Line Semimetals

The quasiparticle spectra of interacting Weyl and nodal-line semimetals on a cubic lattice are studied using the cluster perturbation theory. By tracking the spectral functions under interaction, we find that the Weyl points will move to and meet at a specific point in one Weyl semimetal model, while in the other Weyl semimetal model they are immobile. In the nodal-line semimetals, we find that the nodal line shrinks to a point and then disappears under interaction in one-nodal-line system. When we add another nodal line to this system, we find that the two nodal lines both shrink to specific points, but the disappearing processes of the two nodal lines are not synchronized. We argue that the nontrivial evolution of Weyl points and nodal lines under interaction is due to the presence of symmetry breaking order, e.g., a ferromagnetic moment, in the framework of mean field theory, whereas the stability of Weyl points under interaction is protected by symmetry. Among all these models, the spectral gap is finally opened when the interaction is strong enough.

Ferromagnetism and spin excitations in topological Hubbard models with a flatband

We study the spin-1 excitation spectra of the flatband ferromagnetic phases in interacting topological insulators. As a paradigm, we consider a quarter filled square lattice Hubbard model whose free part is the $π$ flux state with topologically nontrivial and nearly-flat electron bands, which can realize either the Chern or $Z_2$ Hubbard model. By using the numerical exact diagonalization method with a projection onto the nearly-flat band, we obtain the ferromagnetic spin-1 excitation spectra for both the Chern and $Z_2$ Hubbard models, consisting of spin waves and Stoner continuum. The spectra exhibit quite distinct dispersions for both cases, in particular the spin wave is gapless for the Chern Hubbard model, while gapped for the $Z_2$ Hubbard model. Remarkably, in both cases, the nonflatness of the free electron bands introduces dips in the lower boundary of the Stoner continuum. It significantly renormalizes the energies of the spin waves around these dips downward and leads to roton-like spin excitations. We elaborate that it is the softening of the roton-like modes that destabilizes the ferromagnetic phase, and determine the parameter region where the ferromagnetic phase is stable.

Discovery of coexisting Dirac and triply degenerate magnons in a three-dimensional antiferromagnet

Topological magnons are emergent quantum spin excitations featured by magnon bands crossing linearly at the points dubbed nodes, analogous to fermions in topological electronic systems. Experimental realization of topological magnons in three dimensions has not been reported so far. Here, by measuring spin excitations (magnons) of a three-dimensional antiferromagnet Cu$_{3}$TeO$_{6}$ with inelastic neutron scattering, we provide direct spectroscopic evidence for the coexistence of symmetry-protected Dirac and triply degenerate nodes, the latter involving three-component magnons beyond the Dirac-Weyl framework. Our theoretical calculations show that the observed topological magnon band structure can be well described by the linear-spin-wave theory based on a Hamiltonian dominated by the nearest-neighbour exchange interaction $J_1$. As such, we showcase Cu$_{3}$TeO$_{6}$ as an example system where Dirac and triply degenerate magnonic nodal excitations coexist, demonstrate an exotic topological state of matter, and provide a fresh ground to explore the topological properties in quantum materials.

Spectral properties of the square-lattice antiferromagnetic J1-J2 Heisenberg model: confinement and deconfinement of spinons

Based on the mapping between $s=1/2$ spin operators and hard-core bosons, we extend the cluster perturbation theory to spin systems and study the whole excitation spectrum of the antiferromagnetic $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice. In the Néel phase for $J_{2}\lesssim0.4J_{1}$, in addition to the dominant magnon excitation, there is an obvious continuum close to $(π,0)$ in the Brillouin zone indicating the deconfined spin-1/2 spinon excitations. In the stripe phase for $J_{2}\gtrsim0.6J_{1}$, we find similar high-energy two-spinon continuums at $(π/2,π/2)$ and $(π/2,π)$, respectively. The intermediate phase is characterized by a spectrum with completely deconfined broad continuum, which is attributed to a $Z_{2}$ quantum spin liquid with the aid of a variational-Monte-Carlo analysis.

Dynamics of a single hole in the Heisenberg-Kitaev model: a self-consistent Born approximation study

The magnetic properties of 4d and 5d transition-metal insulating compounds with the honeycomb structure are believed to be described by the Heisenberg-Kitaev model, which contains both the isotropic Heisenberg interaction J and anisotropic Kitaev interaction K. In this paper, to investigate the charge dynamics in these materials, we study the single-hole propagation of the t-J-K model in various magnetically ordered phases by the self-consistent Born approximation. We find that there are low-energy coherent quasiparticle (QP) excitations in all of these phases which appear firstly around the K point in the Brillouin zone (BZ), but the band-widths of these QPs are very small due to the hole-magnon coupling. Interestingly, in the zigzag phase relevant to recent experiments, though the QP weights are largely suppressed in the physical spectra in the first BZ, we find that they recover in the extended BZs. Moreover, our results reveal that the low-energy QP spectra are reduced with the increase of K.

Spin-glass ground state in a triangular-lattice compound YbZnGaO$_4$

We report on comprehensive results identifying the ground state of a triangular-lattice structured YbZnGaO$_4$ to be spin glass, including no long-range magnetic order, prominent broad excitation continua, and absence of magnetic thermal conductivity. More crucially, from the ultralow-temperature a.c. susceptibility measurements, we unambiguously observe frequency-dependent peaks around 0.1 K, indicating the spin-glass ground state. We suggest this conclusion to hold also for its sister compound YbMgGaO$_4$, which is confirmed by the observation of spin freezing at low temperatures. We consider disorder and frustration to be the main driving force for the spin-glass phase.

Projective symmetry group classification of $Z_3$ parafermion spin liquids on a honeycomb lattice

To study exotic excitations described by parafermions in the possible spin liquid states of SU($n$) spin systems, we introduce a parafermion parton approach. The SU($n$) spin operators can be represented by clock and shift matrices, which are shown to be the polynomials of parafermion operators in the parafermion representation. We find that SU($n$) spins can be decomposed into $n$ parafermion matrices of degree one. In this decomposition, the spin has a $\{\bigotimes{\rm SU}(n)\}^{n-1}$ gauge symmetry. As an application, we study the one-dimensional three-state clock model and generalized Kitaev model by a mean-field theory, both of them have been proved to be related to parafermion excitations. We find that with the symmetries of translations, $6$-fold rotation and combination of parity and time reversal, there are $9$ types and $102$ solutions for two-dimensional $Z_3$ parafermion spin liquids on the honeycomb lattice. On the contrast, there are $9$ types and $36$ solutions if both parity and time-reversal symmetries are present. Our results provide a novel route for the systematic search of new types of spin liquids with exotic anyon excitations.

Theoretical investigation of the magnetic dynamics in $α$-RuCl$_3$

We study the spin-wave excitations in $α$-RuCl$_3$ by the spin-wave theory. Starting from the five-orbital Hubbard model and the perturbation theory, we derive an effective isospin-$1/2$ model in the large Hubbard ($U$) limit. Based on the energy-band structure calculated from the first-principle method, we find that the effective model can be further reduced to the $K$-$Γ$ model containing a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor (NN) Kitaev interaction ($K$) and a NN off-diagonal exchange interaction ($Γ$). With the spin-wave theory, we find that the $K$-$Γ$ model can give magnetic excitations which is consistent with the recent neutron scattering experiments.

Width-tuned magnetic order oscillation on zigzag edges of honeycomb nanoribbons

Quantum confinement and interference often generate exotic properties in nanostructures. One recent highlight is the experimental indication of a magnetic phase transition in zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons at the critical ribbon width of about 7 nm [G. Z. Magda et al., Nature \textbf{514}, 608 (2014)]. Here we show theoretically that with further increase in the ribbon width, the magnetic correlation of the two edges can exhibit an intriguing oscillatory behavior between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic, driven by acquiring the positive coherence between the two edges to lower the free energy. The oscillation effect is readily tunable in applied magnetic fields. These novel properties suggest new experimental manifestation of the edge magnetic orders in graphene nanoribbons, and enhance the hopes of graphene-like spintronic nanodevices functioning at room temperature.

Spin-wave excitations evidencing the Kitaev interaction in single crystalline $α$-RuCl$_3$

Kitaev interactions underlying a quantum spin liquid have been long sought, but experimental data from which their strengths can be determined directly is still lacking. Here, by carrying out inelastic neutron scattering measurements on high-quality single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_3$, we observe spin-wave spectra with a gap of $\sim$2 meV around the M point of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone. We derive an effective-spin model in the strong-coupling limit based on energy bands obtained from first-principle calculations, and find that the anisotropic Kitaev interaction $K$ term and the isotropic antiferromagentic off-diagonal exchange interaction $Γ$ term are significantly larger than the Heisenberg exchange coupling $J$ term. Our experimental data can be well fit using an effective-spin model with $K=-6.8$ meV and $Γ=9.5$ meV. These results demonstrate explicitly that Kitaev physics is realized in real materials.

Phase diagram and topological phases in the triangular lattice Kitaev-Hubbard model

We study the half-filled Hubbard model on the triangular lattice with spin-dependent Kitaev-like hopping. Using the variational cluster approach, we identify five phases: a metallic phase, a non-coplanar chiral magnetic order, a $120^\circ$ magnetic order, a nonmagnetic insulator (NMI), and an interacting Chern insulator (CI) with a nonzero Chern number. The transition from CI to NMI is characterized by the change of the charge gap from an indirect band gap to a direct Mott gap. Based on the slave-rotor mean-field theory, the NMI phase is further suggested to be a gapless Mott insulator with a spinon Fermi surface or a fractionalized CI with nontrivial spinon topology, depending on the strength of Kitaev-like hopping. Our work highlights the rising field that interesting phases emerge from the interplay of band topology and Mott physics.

Possible singlet and triplet superconductivity on honeycomb lattice

We study the possible superconducting pairing symmetry mediated by spin and charge fluctuations on the honeycomb lattice using the extended Hubbard model and the random-phase-approximation method. From $2\%$ to $20\%$ doping levels, a spin-singlet $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}+id_{xy}$-wave is shown to be the leading superconducting pairing symmetry when only the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$ is considered, with the gap function being a mixture of the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor pairings. When the offset of the energy level between the two sublattices exceeds a critical value, the most favorable pairing is a spin-triplet $f$-wave which is mainly composed of the next-nearest-neighbor pairing. We show that the next-nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction $V$ is also in favor of the spin-triplet $f$-wave pairing.

Fermi arcs, pseudogap and collective excitations in doped Sr2IrO4: A generalized fluctuation exchange study

Motivated by recent experimental measurements, we study the quasiparticle spectra and the collective excitations in doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, in which the interesting interplay between the electronic correlations and strong spin-orbital coupling (SOC) exists. To include the SOC, we use the Hugenholtz diagrams to extend the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approach to the case where the SU(2) symmetry can be broken. By using this generalized FLEX method, we find a weak pseudogap behavior near $(π,0)$ in the slightly electron-doped system, with the corresponding Fermi arc formed by the partial destruction of Fermi surface. Similar features also appear in the hole-doped system, however, the position of the Fermi arc is rotated $45^\circ$ with respect to the former. These results are consistent with the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectra in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. We demonstrate that these anomalous features are mainly caused by the isospin fluctuations derived from the effective $J_{\text{eff}}=1/2$ doublet.

Global phase diagram, possible chiral spin liquid and topological superconductivity in the triangular Kitaev-Heisenberg model

The possible ground states of the undoped and doped Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice are studied. For the undoped system, a combination of the numerical exact diagonalization calculation and the four-sublattice transformation analysis suggests one possible exotic phase and four magnetically ordered phases including a collinear stripe pattern and a noncollinear spiral pattern in the global phase diagram. The exotic phase near the antiferromagnetic (AF) Kitaev point is further investigated by using the Schwinger-fermion mean-field method, and we obtain an energetically favorable $Z_2$ chiral spin liquid with a Chern number $\pm2$ as a promising candidate. At finite doping, we find that the AF Heisenberg coupling supports an $s$-wave or a $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$-wave superconductivity (SC), while the AF and the ferromagnetic Kitaev interactions favor a $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$-wave SC and a time-reversal invariant topological $p$-wave SC, respectively. Possible experimental realizations and related candidate materials are also discussed.

Consistent picture of the octet-nodal gap and its evolution with doping in heavily overdoped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We investigate the pairing symmetry in heavily overdoped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ based on the spin-fluctuation mechanism. The exotic octet nodes of the superconducting gap and the unusual evolution of the gap with doping observed by the recent experiments are well explained in a unified manner. We demonstrate that the scatterings of electrons on the Fermi patches is mainly responsible for the incommensurate spin fluctuations and consequently the Fermi-surface-dependent multi-gap structure, since the Fermi level is close to the flat band. In addition, we find that a $d$-wave pairing state will prevail over the s-wave pairing state around the Lifshitz transition point.
