Beta-Ag2Te: A topological insulator with strong anisotropy

We present evidence of topological surface states in beta-Ag2Te through first-principles calculations and periodic quantum interference effect in single crystalline nanoribbon. Our first-principles calculations show that beta-Ag2Te is a topological insulator with a gapless Dirac cone with strong anisotropy. To experimentally probe the topological surface state, we synthesized high quality beta-Ag2Te nanoribbons and performed electron transport measurements. The coexistence of pronounced Aharonov-Bohm oscillations and weak Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak oscillations clearly demonstrates coherent electron transport around the perimeter of beta-Ag2Te nanoribbon and therefore the existence of metallic surface states, which is further supported by the temperature dependence of resistivity for beta-Ag2Te nanoribbons with different cross section areas. Highly anisotropic topological surface state of beta-Ag2Te suggests that the material is a promising material for fundamental study and future spintronic devices.

Finite size scaling of entanglement entropy at the Anderson transition with interactions

We study the entanglement entropy(EE) of disordered one-dimensional spinless fermions with attractive interactions. With intensive numerical calculation of the EE using the density matrix renormalization group method, we find clear signatures of the transition between the localized and delocalized phase. In the delocalized phase, the fluctuations of the EE becomes minimum and independent of the system size. Meanwhile the EE's logarithmic scaling behavior is found to recover to that of a clean system. We present a general scheme of finite size scaling of the EE at the critical regime of the Anderson transition, from which we extract the critical parameters of the transition with good accuracy, including the critical exponent, critical point and a power-law divergent localization length.

Intervalley Scattering and Localization Behaviors of Spin-Valley Coupled Dirac Fermions

We study the quantum diffusive transport of multivalley massive Dirac cones, where time-reversal symmetry requires opposite spin orientations in inequivalent valleys. We show that the intervalley scattering and intravalley scattering can be distinguished from the quantum conductivity that corrects the semiclassical Drude conductivity, due to their distinct symmetries and localization trends. In immediate practice, it allows transport measurements to estimate the intervalley scattering rate in hole-doped monolayers of group-VI transition metal dichalcogenides (e.g., molybdenum dichalcogenides and tungsten dichalcogenides), an ideal class of materials for valleytronics applications. The results can be generalized to a large class of multivalley massive Dirac systems with spin-valley coupling and time-reversal symmetry.

Photonic simulation of topological excitations in metamaterials

Condensed matter systems with topological order and metamaterials with left-handed chirality have attracted recently extensive interests in the fields of physics and optics. So far the two fields are independent, and there is no work to address their connection. Here we propose to establish the relation between the topological order in condensed matter systems and the chirality in metamaterials, by mapping explicitly Maxwell's equations to the Dirac equation in one dimension. We report an experimental implement of the band inversion in the Dirac equation, which accompanies change of chirality of electromagnetic wave in metamaterials, and the first microwave measurement of topological excitations and topological phases in one dimension. Our finding provides a proof-of-principle example that electromagnetic wave in the metamaterials can be used to simulate the topological order in condensed matter systems and quantum phenomena in relativistic quantum mechanics in a controlled laboratory environment.

A magnetic monopole in topological insulator: exact solution

The Witten effect tells that a unit magnetic monopole can bind a half elementary charge in an axion media. We present an exact solution of a magnetic monopole in a topological insulator that was proposed to be an axion media recently. It is found that a magnetic monopole can induce one zero energy state bound to it and one surface state of zero energy. The two states are quite robust, but the degeneracy can be removed by external fields. For a finite size system, the interference of two states may lift the degeneracy, and the resulting states have one half near the origin and another half around the surface, which realizes the Witten effect. However, the energy difference decays exponentially with the size of the system. The exact solution does not fully support the realization of the Witten effect in a topological insulator.

Particle-hole bound states of dipolar molecules in optical lattice

We investigate the particle-hole pair excitations of dipolar molecules in optical lattice, which can be described with an extended Bose-Hubbard model. For strong enough dipole-dipole interaction, the particle-hole pair excitations can form bound states in one and two dimensions. With decreasing dipole-dipole interaction, the energies of the bound states increase and merge into the particle-hole continuous spectrum gradually. The existence regions, the energy spectra and the wave functions of the bound states are carefully studied and the symmetries of the bound states are analyzed with group theory. For a given dipole-dipole interaction, the number of bound states varies in momentum space and a number distribution of the bound states is illustrated. We also discuss how to observe these bound states in future experiments.

Nonlocal noise cross-correlation mediated by entangled Majorana fermions

Due to their nonlocality, qubits nested in Majorana bound states may be the key to realize decoherence-free quantum computation. Majorana bound states could be achieved at the ends of a one-dimensional topological superconductor. However, when the bound states couple directly to electron reservoirs their nonlocal correlation is quenched by local Andreev reflections. Here we propose a scheme to generate nonlocal noise cross correlation between two well-separated quantum dots, mediated by a pair of Majorana bound states. Both positive and negative cross correlations can be obtained by tuning the gate voltages applied to the dots. Within a limited range of finite temperatures, the cross correlation is not suppressed by thermal fluctuations. Furthermore, we show how the local Andreev reflections suppress the noise cross correlation when multiple dot energy levels are coupled to the Majorana bound states. The measurable cross correlation is expected to serve as a sensitive indicator for the generation of Majorana fermions.

Fractional topological phase in one-dimensional flatbands with nontrivial topology

We show the existence of the fractional topological phase (FTP) in a one-dimensional interacting fermion model using exact diagonalization, in which the non-interacting part has flatbands with nontrivial topology. In the presence of the nearest-neighbouring interaction $V_{1}$, the FTP at filling factor $ν=1/3$ appears. It is characterized by the three-fold degeneracy and the quantized total Berry phase of the ground-states. The FTP is destroyed by a next-nearest-neighbouring interaction $V_{2}$ and the phase diagrams in the $(V_{1},V_{2})$ plane is determined. We also present a physical picture of the phase and discuss its existence in the nearly flatband. Within the picture, we argue that the FTP at other filling factors can be generated by introducing proper interactions. The present study contributes to a systematic understanding of the FTPs and can be realized in cold-atom experiments.

Topological insulator and the Dirac equation

We present a general description of topological insulators from the point of view of Dirac equations. The Z_{2} index for the Dirac equation is always zero, and thus the Dirac equation is topologically trivial. After the quadratic B term in momentum is introduced to correct the mass term m or the band gap of the Dirac equation, the Z_{2} index is modified as 1 for mB>0 and 0 for mB<0. For a fixed B there exists a topological quantum phase transition from a topologically trivial system to a non-trivial one system when the sign of mass m changes. A series of solutions near the boundary in the modified Dirac equation are obtained, which is characteristic of topological insulator. From the solutions of the bound states and the Z_{2} index we establish a relation between the Dirac equation and topological insulators.

Spin-orbit scattering in quantum diffusion of massive Dirac fermions

Effect of spin-orbit scattering on quantum diffusive transport of two-dimensional massive Dirac fermions is studied by the diagrammatic technique. The quantum diffusion of massive Dirac fermions can be viewed as a singlet Cooperon in the massless limit and a triplet Cooperon in the large-mass limit. The spin-orbit scattering behaves like random magnetic fields only to the triplet Cooperon, and suppresses the weak localization of Dirac fermions in the large-mass regime. This behavior suggests an experiment to detect the weak localization of bulk subbands in topological insulator thin films, in which a narrowing of the cusp of the negative magnetoconductivity is expected after doping heavy-element impurities. Finally, a detailed comparison between the conventional two-dimensional electrons and Dirac fermions is presented for impurities of orthogonal, symplectic, and unitary symmetries.

Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in Flat Band Ferromagnet

We proposed a theory of quantum anomalous Hall effect in a flat-band ferromagnet on a two-dimensional (2D) decorated lattice with spin-orbit coupling. Free electrons on the lattice have dispersionless flat bands, and the ground state is highly degenerate when each lattice site is occupied averagely by one electron, i.e., the system is at half filling. The on-site Coulomb interaction can remove the degeneracy and give rise to the ferrimagnetism, which is the coexistence of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic long-range orders. On the other hand the spin-orbit coupling makes the band structure topologically non-trivial, and produces the quantum spin Hall effect with a pair of helical edge states around the system boundary. Based on the rigorous results for the Hubbard model, we found that the Coulomb interaction can provide an effective staggered potential and turn the quantum spin Hall phase into a quantum anomalous Hall phase.

Quantum percolation in quantum spin Hall antidot systems

We study the influences of antidot-induced bound states on transport properties of two- dimensional quantum spin Hall insulators. The bound statesare found able to induce quantum percolation in the originally insulating bulk. At some critical antidot densities, the quantum spin Hall phase can be completely destroyed due to the maximum quantum percolation. For systems with periodic boundaries, the maximum quantum percolationbetween the bound states creates intermediate extended states in the bulk which is originally gapped and insulating. The antidot in- duced bound states plays the same role as the magnetic field inthe quantum Hall effect, both makes electrons go into cyclotron motions. We also draw an analogy between the quantum percolation phenomena in this system and that in the network models of quantum Hall effect.

Localization and Mobility Gap in Topological Anderson Insulator

It has been proposed that disorder may lead to a new type of topological insulator, called topological Anderson insulator (TAI). Here we examine the physical origin of this phenomenon. We calculate the topological invariants and density of states of disordered model in a super-cell of 2-dimensional HgTe/CdTe quantum well. The topologically non-trivial phase is triggered by a band touching as the disorder strength increases. The TAI is protected by a mobility gap, in contrast to the band gap in conventional quantum spin Hall systems. The mobility gap in the TAI consists of a cluster of non-trivial subgaps separated by almost flat and localized bands.

Topological phase in one-dimensional interacting fermion system

We study a one-dimensional interacting topological model by means of exact diagonalization method. The topological properties are firstly examined with the existence of the edge states at half-filling. We find that the topological phases are not only robust to small repulsive interactions but also are stabilized by small attractive interactions, and also finite repulsive interaction can drive a topological non-trivial phase into a trivial one while the attractive interaction can drive a trivial phase into a non-trivial one. Next we calculate the Berry phase and parity of the bulk system and find that they are equivalent in characterizing the topological phases. With them we obtain the critical interaction strengths and construct part of the phase diagram in the parameters space. Finally we discuss the effective Hamiltonian at large-U limit and provide additional understanding of the numerical results. Our these results could be realized experimentally using cold atoms trapped in the 1D optical lattice.

Weak localization of bulk channels in topological insulator thin film

Weak antilocalization (WAL) is expected whenever strong spin-orbit coupling or scattering comes into play. Spin-orbit coupling in the bulk states of a topological insulator is very strong, enough to result in the topological phase transition. However, the recently observed WAL in topological insulators seems to have an ambiguous origin from the bulk states. Starting from the effective model for three-dimensional topological insulators, we find that the lowest two-dimensional (2D) bulk subbands of a topological insulator thin film can be described by the modified massive Dirac model. We derive the magnetoconductivity formula for both the 2D bulk subbands and surface bands. Because with Relatively large gap, the 2D bulk subbands may lie in the regimes where the unitary behavior or even weak localization (WL) is also expected, instead of always WAL. As a result, the bulk states may contribute small magnetoconductivity or even compensate the WAL from the surface states. Inflection in magnetoconductivity curves may appear when the bulk WL channels outnumber the surface WAL channels, providing a signature of the weak localization from the bulk states.

Competition between weak localization and antilocalization in topological surface states

A magnetoconductivity formula is presented for the surface states of a magnetically doped topological insulator. It reveals a competing effect of weak localization and weak antilocalization in quantum transport when an energy gap is opened at the Dirac point by magnetic doping. It is found that, while random magnetic scattering always drives the system from the symplectic to the unitary class, the gap could induce a crossover from weak antilocalization to weak localization, tunable by the Fermi energy or the gap. This crossover presents a unique feature characterizing the surface states of a topological insulator with the gap opened at the Dirac point in the quantum diffusion regime.

Crossover from Majorana edge to end states in quasi-one-dimensional p-wave superconductors

In a recent work [Potter and Lee, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 227003 (2010)], it was demonstrated by means of numerical diagonalization that the Majorana end states can be localized at opposite ends of a sample of an ideal spinless p-wave superconductor with the strip geometry beyond the strict one-dimensional limit. Here we reexamine this issue, and study the topological quantum phase transition in the same system. We give the phase diagrams of the presence of Majorana end modes by using of $Z_{2}$ topological index. It is found that the topological property of a strip geometry will change in an oscillatory way with respect of the sample width.

Impurity effect on weak anti-localization in the topological insulator Bi2Te3

We study weak anti-localization (WAL) effect in topological insulator Bi2Te3 thin films at low temperatures. Two-dimensional WAL effect associated with surface carriers is revealed in the tilted magnetic field dependence of magneto-conductance. Our data demonstrates that the observed WAL is robust against deposition of non-magnetic Au impurities on the surface of the thin films. But it is quenched by deposition of magnetic Fe impurities which destroy the pi Berry's phase of the topological surface states. The magneto-conductance data of a 5 nm Bi2Te3 film suggests that a crossover from symplectic to unitary classes is observed with the deposition of Fe impurities.
