Resonant Spin Hall Conductance in Two-Dimensional Electron Systems with Rashba Interaction in a Perpendicular Magnetic Field

We study transport properties of a two-dimensional electron system with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a perpendicular magnetic field. The spin orbit coupling competes with Zeeman splitting to introduce additional degeneracies between different Landau levels at certain magnetic fields. This degeneracy, if occuring at the Fermi level, gives rise to a resonant spin Hall conductance, whose height is divergent as 1/T and whose weight is divergent as $-\ln T$ at low temperatures. The Hall conductance is unaffected by the Rashba coupling.

Quantum-classical transition of the escape rate of uniaxial antiferromagnetic particles in an arbitrarily directed field

Quantum-classical escape rate transition has been studied for uniaxial antiferromagnetic particles with an arbitrarily directed magnetic field. In the case that the transverse and longitudinal fileds coexist, we calculate the phase boundary line between first- and second-order transitions, from which phase diagrams can be obtained. It is shown that the effects of the applied longitudinal magnetic field on quantum-classical transition vary greatly for different relative magnitudes of the non-compensation.

SU(4) Spin-Orbital Two-Leg Ladder, Square and Triangle Lattices

Based on the generalized valence bond picture, a Schwinger boson mean field theory is applied to the symmetric SU(4) spin-orbital systems. For a two-leg SU(4) ladder, the ground state is a spin-orbital liquid with a finite energy gap, in good agreement with recent numerical calculations. In two-dimensional square and triangle lattices, the SU(4) Schwinger bosons condense at (π/2,π/2) and (π/3,π/3), respectively. Spin, orbital, and coupled spin-orbital static susceptibilities become singular at the wave vectors, twice of which the bose condensation arises at. It is also demonstrated that there are spin, orbital, and coupled spin-orbital long-range orderings in the ground state.

Suppression of Quantum Phase Interference in Molecular Magnets Fe₈ with Dipolar-Dipolar Interaction

Renormalized tunnel splitting with a finite distribution in the biaxial spin model for molecular magnets is obtained by taking into account the dipolar interaction of enviromental spins. Oscillation of the resonant tunnel splitting with a transverse magnetic field along the hard axis is smeared by the finite distribution which subsequently affects the quantum steps of hysteresis curve evaluated in terms of the modified Landau-Zener model of spin flipping induced by the sweeping field. We conclude that the dipolar-dipolar interaction drives decoherence of quantum tunnelling in molcular magnets Fe₈, which explains why the quenching points of tunnel spliting between odd and even resonant tunnelling predcited theoretically were not observed experimentally.

Quantum computing of molecular magnet Mn$_{12}$

Quantum computation in molecular magnets is studied by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation numerically. Following Leuenberger and Loss (Nature (London) 410, 789(2001)), an external oscillating magnetic field is applied to populate and manipulate the spin coherent states in molecular magnet Mn$_{12}$. The conditions to realize parallel recording and reading data bases of Grover algorithsm in molecular magnets are discussed in details. It is found that an accurate duration time of magnetic pulse as well as the amplitudes are required to design the device of quantum computing.

Theory for high spin systems with orbital degeneracy

High-spin systems with orbital degeneracy are studied in the large spin limit. In the absence of Hund's coupling, the classical spin model is mapped onto disconnected orbital systems with spins up and down, respectively. The ground state of the isotropic model is an orbital valence bond state where each bond is an orbital singlet with parallel spins, and neighbouring bonds interact antiferromagnetically. The possible relevance to the transition metal oxides are discussed.

Formation of energy gap in higher dimensional spin-orbital liquids

A Schwinger boson mean field theory is developed for spin liquids in a symmetric spin-orbital model in higher dimensions. Spin, orbital and coupled spin-orbital operators are treated equally. We evaluate the dynamic correlation functions and collective excitations spectra. As the collective excitations have a finite energy gap, we conclude that the ground state is a spin-orbital liquid with a two-fold degeneracy, which breaks the discrete spin-orbital symmetry. Possible relevence of this spin liquid state to several realistic systems, such as CaV$_4$V$_9$ and Na$_2$Sb$_2$Ti$_2$O, are discussed.

Mott-Hubbard transition in infinite dimensions

We analyze the unanalytical structure of metal-insulator transition (MIT) in infinite dimensions. By introducing a simple transformation into the dynamical mean-field equation of Hubbard model, a multiple-valued structure in Green's function and other thermodynamical quantities with respect to the interaction strength $U$ are found at low temperatures. A unified description of stable, metastable and unstable phases is obtained in the regime $U_{c1}(T) 0$ evolves into second-order one at $U_{c2}(0)$ for $T=0 $. The phase diagram near MIT is presented.

Ordered valence bond states in symmetric two-dimensional spin-orbital systems

We consider a superexchange Hamiltonian, $H=-\sum_{ }(2{\bf S}_i\cdot {\bf S}_j-\frac 12)(2{\bf T}_i\cdot {\bf T}_j-\frac 12)$, which describes systems with orbital degeneracy and strong electron-phonon coupling in the limit of large on-site repulsion. In an SU(4) Schwinger boson representation, a reduced spin-orbital interaction is derived {\it exactly}, and a mean field theory has been developed by introducing a symmetric valence bond pairing order parameter. In one dimension, a spin-orbital liquid state with a finite gap is obtained. On a two-dimensional square lattice a novel type of spin-orbital ferromagnetically ordered state appears, while spin and orbital are antiferromagnetic. Moreover, an important relation has been found, relating the spin and orbital correlation functions to the combined spin-orbital ones.

Generalized Valence Bond State and Solvable Models for Spin-1/2 Systems with Orbital degeneracy

A spin-1/2 system with double orbital degeneracy may possess SU(4) symmetry. According to the group theory a global SU(4) singelt state can be expressed as a linear combination of all possible configurations consisting of four-site SU(4) singlets. Following P. W. Andersion's idea for spin 1/2 system, we propose that the ground state for the antiferromagnetic SU(4) model is SU(4) resonating valence bond (RVB) state. A short-range SU(4) RVB state is a spin and orbital liquid, and its elementary excitations has an energy gap. We construct a series of solvale models which ground states are short-range SU(4) RVB states. The results can be generalized to the antiferromagnetic SU(N) models.

Coloumb interaction and instability of CE-structure in half doped manganites

In their Letter (Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 5118 (1999)), den Brink, Khaliullin, and Khomskii proposed theoretically that the one-dimensional ferromagnetic zigzag chains in CE phase in half-doped manganites play an essential role in forming the orbital ordering, and, more surprisingly, the on-site Coulomb interaction U between electrons with different orbitals leads to experimentally observed charge ordering. In this Comment, I point out that the strong U will destroy the stability of CE-type phase, which is stable in a very narrow regime in the parameter space for electronic model. To solve this issue finally, we have to take into account other interactions, such as the long-range Coulomb interaction, Jahn-Teller distortion, and physics of topological berry phase. For example, the effect of finite large J$_{H}$ leads to an attractive particle-hole interaction, which favors to stabilize the charge ordering.

Percolative conductivity and critical exponents in mixed-valent manganites

Recent experiments have shown that some colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) materials exhibit a percolation transition. The conductivity exponent varies substantially with or without an external magnetic field. This finding prompted us to carry out theoretical studies of percolation transition in CMR systems. We find that the percolation transition coincides with the magnetic transition and this causes a large effect of a magnetic field on the percolation transition. Using real-space-renormalization method and numerical calculations for two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) models, we obtain the conductivity exponent $t$ to be 5.3 (3D) and 3.3 (2D) without a magnetic field, and 1.7 (3D) and 1.4 (2D) with a magnetic field.

Linear spin and orbital wave theory for undoped manganites

We present a linear spin and orbital wave theory to account for the spin and orbital orderings observed experimentally in undoped manganite. It is found that the anisotropy of the magnetic structure is closely related to the orbital ordering, and the Jahn-Teller effect stabilizes the orbital ordering. The phase diagram and the low energy excitation spectra for both spin and orbital orderings are obtained. The calculated critical temperatures can be quantitatively comparable to the experimental data.

Unified theory of phase separation and charge ordering in doped manganite perovskites

A unified theory is developed to explain various types of electronic collective behaviors in doped manganites R$_{1-x}$X$_x$MnO$_3$ (R = La, Pr,Nd etc. and X = Ca, Sr, Ba etc.). Starting from a realistic electronic model, we derive an effective Hamiltonianis by ultilizing the projection perturbation techniques and develop a spin-charge-orbital coherent state theory, in which the Jahn-Teller effect and the orbital degeneracy of e$_g$ electrons in Mn ions are taken into account. Physically, the experimentally observed charge ordering state and electronic phase separation are two macroscopic quantum phenomena with opposite physical mechanisms, and their physical origins are elucidated in this theory. Interplay of the Jahn-Teller effect, the lattice distortion as well as the double exchange mechanism leads to different magnetic structures and to different charge ordering patterns and phase separation.

Phase diagram of an extended Kondo lattice model for manganites: the Schwinger-boson mean-field approach

We investigate the phase diagram of an extended Kondo lattice model for doped manganese oxides in the presence of strong but finite Hund's coupling and on-site Coulomb interaction. By means of the Schwinger-boson mean-field approach, it is found that, besides magnetic ordering, there will be non-uniform charge distributions, such as charge ordering and phase separation, if the interaction between electrons prevails over the hybridization. Which of the charge ordering and phase separation appears is determined by a competition between effective repulsive and attractive interactions due to virtual processes of electron hopping. Calculated results show that strong electron correlations caused by the on-site Coulomb interaction as well as the finite Hund's coupling play an important role in the magnetic ordering and charge distribution at low temperatures.

An effective Hamiltonian for an extended Kondo lattice model and a possible origin of charge ordering in half-doped manganites

An effective Hamiltonian is derived in the case of the strong Hund coupling and on-site Coulomb interaction by means of a projective perturbation approach. A physical mechanism for charge ordering in half-doped manganites (R_{0.5}X_{0.5}MnO_3) is proposed. The virtual process of electron hopping results in antiferromagnetic superexchange and a repulsive interaction, which may drive electrons to form a Wigner lattice. The phase diagram of the ground state of the model is presented at half doping. In the case of formation of Wigner lattice, we prove that spins of electrons are aligned ferromagnetically as well as that the localized spin background is antiferromagnetic. The influence of the on-site Coulomb interaction is also discussed.

Ferromagnetic ground state of an orbital degenerate electronic model for transition-metal oxides: exact solution and physical mechanism

We present an exact ground state solution of a one-dimensional electronic model for transition-metal oxides in the strong coupling limit. The model contains doubly degenerated orbit for itinerant electrons and the Hund coupling between the itinerant electrons and localized spins. The ground state is proven to be a full ferromagnet for any density of electrons. Our model provides a rigorous example for metallic ferromagnetism in narrow band systems. The physical mechanism for ferromagnetism and its relevance to high-dimensional systems, like R$_{1-x}$X$_x$MnO$_3$, are discussed. Due to the orbital degeneracy of itinerant electrons, the superexchange coupling can be ferromagnetic rather than antiferromagnetic in the one-band case.

Antiferromagnetism and phase separation in electronic models for doped transition-metal oxides

We investigate the ground state properties of electronic models for doped manganites and nickelates. An effective t - J like Hamiltonian is derived from the case of strong Hund coupling between the conduction electrons and localized spins by means of the projection technique. An attractive interaction for conduction electrons and an anti-ferromagnetic coupling of the localized spin are obtained. A large ratio of the attraction to effective electron hopping, which is modulated by the spin background, will lead to the phase separation. The anti-ferromagnetic phase and the phase separation appear in the case of either high or low density of electrons. The possible relevance of the phase separation to the charge stripe phase in the manganites and nickelates is discussed.
