Embedding Quantum Many-Body Scars into Decoherence-Free Subspaces

Quantum many-body scars are non-thermal excited eigenstates of non-integrable Hamiltonians, which could support coherent revival dynamics from special initial states when scars form an equally spaced tower in the energy spectrum. For open quantum systems, engineering many-body scarred dynamics by a controlled coupling to the environment remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we provide a general framework to exactly embed quantum many-body scars into the decoherence-free subspaces of Lindblad master equations. The dissipative scarred dynamics manifest persistent periodic oscillations for generic initial states, and can be practically utilized to prepare scar states with potential quantum metrology applications. We construct the Liouvillian dissipators with the local projectors that annihilate the whole scar towers, and utilize the Hamiltonian part to rotate the undesired states out of the null space of dissipators. We demonstrate our protocol through several typical models hosting many-body scar towers, and propose an experimental scheme to observe the dissipative scarred dynamics based on digital quantum simulations and resetting ancilla qubits.

Solving excited states for long-range interacting trapped ions with neural networks

The computation of excited states in strongly interacting quantum many-body systems is of fundamental importance. Yet, it is notoriously challenging due to the exponential scaling of the Hilbert space dimension with the system size. Here, we introduce a neural network-based algorithm that can simultaneously output multiple low-lying excited states of a quantum many-body spin system in an accurate and efficient fashion. This algorithm, dubbed the neural quantum excited-state (NQES) algorithm, requires no explicit orthogonalization of the states and is generally applicable to higher dimensions. We demonstrate, through concrete examples including the Haldane-Shastry model with all-to-all interactions, that the NQES algorithm is capable of efficiently computing multiple excited states and their related observable expectations. In addition, we apply the NQES algorithm to two classes of long-range interacting trapped-ion systems in a two-dimensional Wigner crystal. For non-decaying all-to-all interactions with alternating signs, our computed low-lying excited states bear spatial correlation patterns similar to those of the ground states, which closely match recent experimental observations that the quasi-adiabatically prepared state accurately reproduces analytical ground-state correlations. For a system of up to 300 ions with power-law decaying antiferromagnetic interactions, we successfully uncover its gap scaling and correlation features. Our results establish a scalable and efficient algorithm for computing excited states of interacting quantum many-body systems, which holds potential applications ranging from benchmarking quantum devices to photoisomerization.

hqQUBO: A Hybrid-querying Quantum Optimization Model Validated with 16-qubits on an Ion Trap Quantum Computer for Life Science Applications

AlphaFold has achieved groundbreaking advancements in protein structure prediction, exerting profound influence across biology, medicine, and drug discovery. However, its reliance on multiple sequence alignment (MSA) is inherently time-consuming due to the NP-hard nature of constructing MSAs. Quantum computing emerges as a promising alternative, compared to classical computers, offering the potentials for exponential speedup and improved accuracy on such complex optimization challenges. This work bridges the gap between quantum computing and MSA task efficiently and successfully, where we compared classical and quantum computational scaling as the number of qubits increases, and assessed the role of quantum entanglement in model performance. Furthermore, we proposed an innovative hybrid query encoding approach hyQUBO to avoid redundancy, and thereby the quantum resources significantly reduced to a scaling of $\mathcal{O}(NL)$. Additionally, coupling of VQE and the quenched CVaR scheme was utilized to enhance the robustness and convergence. The integration of multiple strategies facilitates the robust deployment of the quantum algorithm from idealized simulators (on CPU and GPU) to real-world, noisy quantum devices (HYQ-A37). To the best of our knowledge, our work represented the largest-scale implementation of digital simulation using up to 16 qubits on a trapped-ion quantum computer for life science problem, which achieved state of the art performance in both simulation and experimental results. Our work paves the way towards large-scale simulations of life science tasks on real quantum processors.

Observation of quantum information collapse-and-revival in a strongly-interacting Rydberg atom array

Interactions of isolated quantum many-body systems typically scramble local information into the entire system and make it unrecoverable. Ergodicity-breaking systems possess the potential to exhibit fundamentally different information scrambling dynamics beyond this paradigm. For many-body localized systems with strong ergodicity breaking, local transport vanishes and information scrambles logarithmically slowly. Whereas in Rydberg atom arrays, local qubit flips induce dynamical retardation on surrounding qubits through the Rydberg blockade effect, giving rise to quantum many-body scars that weakly break ergodicity, and resulting in the predicted unconventional quantum information spreading behaviours. Here, we present the first measurements of out-of-time-ordered correlators and Holevo information in a Rydberg atom array, enabling us to precisely track quantum information scrambling and transport dynamics. By leveraging these tools, we observe a novel spatio-temporal collapse-and-revival behaviour of quantum information, which differs from both typical chaotic and many-body localized systems. Our experiment sheds light on the unique information dynamics in many-body systems with kinetic constraints, and demonstrates an effective digital-analogue approach to coherently reverse time evolution and steer information propagation in near-term quantum devices.

Exact Quantum Many-Body Scars in Higher-Spin Kinetically Constrained Models

We discover a variety of exact quantum many-body scars in higher-spin kinetically constrained models, through the recently developed DMRG-S algorithm [Zhang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 020402]. Specifically, for the higher-spin PXP model on arbitrary bipartite lattices of any spatial dimension, we find exact many-body scars that are equidistantly spaced in the energy spectrum and exhibit similar structures to the ground state of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model. For the one-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model with a tilted potential in a certain parameter regime, whose effective model is equivalent to a kinetically constrained spin model with four degrees of freedom on each site, we find several many-body scars at energy $E=0$ and $E=\pm \sqrt{2}$ that can be exactly represented as matrix product states with finite bond dimensions. Our results demonstrate that larger local degrees of freedom in the kinetically constrained models provide a much broader space for the emergence of quantum many-body scars and weak ergodicity breaking.

Extracting Quantum Many-Body Scarred Eigenstates with Matrix Product States

Quantum many-body scarred systems host nonthermal excited eigenstates immersed in a sea of thermal ones. In cases where exact expressions for these special eigenstates are not known, it is computationally demanding to distinguish them from their exponentially many thermal neighbors. We propose a matrix-product-state (MPS) algorithm, dubbed DMRG-S, to extract such states at system sizes far beyond the scope of exact diagonalization. Using this technique, we obtain scarred eigenstates in Rydberg-blockaded chains of up to 80 sites and perform a finite-size scaling study to address the lingering question of the stability for the Néel state revivals in the thermodynamic limit. Our method also provides a systematic way to obtain exact MPS representations for scarred eigenstates near the target energy without a priori knowledge. In particular, we find several new scarred eigenstates with exact MPS representations in kinetically constrained spin and clock models. The combination of numerical and analytical investigations in our work provides a new methodology for future studies of quantum many-body scars.

Quantum Information Scrambling in Quantum Many-body Scarred Systems

Quantum many-body scarred systems host special non-thermal eigenstates that support periodic revival dynamics and weakly break the ergodicity. Here, we study the quantum information scrambling dynamics in quantum many-body scarred systems, with a focus on the "PXP" model. We use the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) and Holevo information as measures of the information scrambling, and apply an efficient numerical method based on matrix product operators to compute them up to 41 spins. We find that both the OTOC and Holevo information exhibit a linear light cone and periodic oscillations inside the light cone for initial states within the scarred subspace, which is in sharp contrast to thermal or many-body localized systems. The periodic revivals of OTOCs and Holevo information signify unusual breakdown of quantum chaos and are not equivalent to the revival dynamics of state fidelity or local observables studied in the previous literature. To explain the formation of the linear light cone structure, we provide a perturbation-type calculation based on a phenomenological model. In addition, we demonstrate that the OTOC and Holevo information dynamics of the "PXP" model can be measured using the Rydberg-atom quantum simulators with current experimental technologies, and numerically identify the measurable signatures using experimental parameters.

Anomalous Quantum Information Scrambling for $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Parafermion Chains

Parafermions are exotic quasiparticles with non-Abelian fractional statistics that could be exploited to realize universal topological quantum computing. Here, we study the scrambling of quantum information in one-dimensional parafermionic chains, with a focus on $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermions in particular. We use the generalized out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) as a measure of the information scrambling and introduce an efficient method based on matrix product operators to compute them. With this method, we compute the OTOCs for $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermions chains up to $200$ sites for the entire early growth region. We find that, in stark contrast to the dynamics of conventional fermions or bosons, the information scrambling light cones for parafermions can be both symmetric and asymmetric, even for inversion-invariant Hamiltonians involving only hopping terms. In addition, we find a deformed light cone structure with a sharp peak at the boundary of the parafermion chains in the topological regime, which gives a unambiguous evidence of the strong zero modes at infinite temperature.

Exact dimer phase with anisotropic interaction for one dimensional magnets

We report the exact dimer phase, in which the ground states are described by product of singlet dimer, in the extended XYZ model by generalizing the isotropic Majumdar-Ghosh model to the fully anisotropic region. We demonstrate that this phase can be realized even in models when antiferromagnetic interaction along one of the three directions. This model also supports three different ferromagnetic (FM) phases, denoted as $x$-FM, $y$-FM and $z$-FM, polarized along the three directions. The boundaries between the exact dimer phase and FM phases are infinite-fold degenerate. The breaking of this infinite-fold degeneracy by either translational symmetry breaking or $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry breaking leads to exact dimer phase and FM phases, respectively. Moreover, the boundaries between the three FM phases are critical with central charge $c=1$ for free fermions. We characterize the properties of these boundaries using entanglement entropy, excitation gap, and long-range spin-spin correlation functions. These results are relevant to a large number of one dimensional magnets, in which anisotropy is necessary to isolate a single chain out from the bulk material. We discuss the possible experimental signatures in realistic materials with magnetic field along different directions and show that the anisotropy may resolve the disagreement between theory and experiments based on isotropic spin-spin interactions.

Nutation dynamics and multifrequency resonance in a many-body seesaw

The multifrequency resonance has been widely explored in some of the single-particle models, in which the modulating Rabi model has been most widely investigated. It has been found that with the diagonal periodic modulation, a steady dynamics can be realized in some well-defined discrete frequencies. These frequencies are independent of the off-diagonal couplings. In this work, we generalize this physics to the many-body seesaw realized using the tilted Bose-Hubbard model. We find that the wave function will recover to its initial condition when the modulation frequency is commensurate with the initial energy level spacing between the ground and the first excited levels. The period is determined by the driving frequency and commensurate ratio. In this case, the wave function will almost be restricted to the lowest two instantaneous energy levels. By projecting the wave function to these two relevant states, the dynamics is exactly the same as that for the spin precession dynamics and nutation dynamics around an oscillating axis. We map out the corresponding phase diagram and show that in the low-frequency regime the state is thermalized and in the strong modulation limit, the dynamics is determined by the effective Floquet Hamiltonian. The measurement of these dynamics from the mean position and mean momentum in phase space are also discussed. Our results provide a new thought about the multifrequency resonance in the many-body system.

Many-body localization as a $d = \infty$ Anderson localization with correlated disorder

The disordered many-body systems can undergo a transition from the extended ensemble to a localized ensemble, known as many-body localization (MBL), which has been intensively explored in recent years. Nevertheless, the relation between Anderson localization (AL) and MBL is still elusive. Here we show that the MBL can be regarded as an infinite-dimensional AL with the correlated disorder in a virtual lattice. We demonstrate this idea using the disordered XXZ model, in which the excitation of $d$ spins over the fully polarized phase can be regarded as a single-particle model in a $d$ dimensional virtual lattice. With the increasing of $d$, the system will quickly approach the MBL phase, in which the infinite-range correlated disorder ensures the saturation of the critical disorder strength in the thermodynamic limit. From the transition from AL to MBL, the entanglement entropy and the critical exponent from energy level statics are shown to depend weakly on the dimension, indicating that belonging to the same universal class. This work clarifies the fundamental concept of MBL and presents a new picture for understanding the MBL phase in terms of AL.

Anomalous relaxation and multiply time scales in the quantum $XY$ model with boundary dissipation

The relaxation of many-body system is still a challenging problem that has not well been understood. In this work we exactly calculate the dynamics of the quantum $XY$ model with boundary dissipation, in which the density matrix in terms of Majorana operators can be decoupled into independent subspaces represented by different number of Majorana fermions. The relaxation is characterized by multiply time scales, and in the long-time limit it is determined by the single particle relaxation process in a typical time scale $T^*$. For the bulk bands, we find $T^* \propto N^3/γn^2 $ in the weak dissipation limit; and $T^* \propto γN^3/ n^2$ in the strong dissipation limit, where $N$ is the chain length, $γ$ is the dissipation rate and $n$ is the band index. For the edge modes $T^* \propto 1/γ$, indicating of most vulnerable to dissipation in the long chain limit. These results are counter-intuitive because it means any weak dissipation can induce relaxation, while strong dissipation can induce weak relaxation. We find that these two limits correspond to two different physics, which are explained based on the first and second-order perturbation theory in an equivalent non-Hermitian model.Furthermore, we show that even in the long chain limit the relaxation may exhibit strong odd-even effect. These results shade new insight into the dynamics of topological qubits in environment.

Stochastic and long-distance level spacing statistics in many-body localization

From the random matrix theory all the energy levels should be strongly correlated due to the presence of all off-diagonal entries. In this work we introduce two new statistics to more accurately characterize these long-distance interactions in the disordered many-body systems with only short-range interaction. In the $(p, q)$ statistics, we directly measure the long distance energy level spacings, while in the second approach, we randomly eliminate some of the energy levels, and then measure the reserved $η\%$ energy levels using nearest-neighbor level spacings. We benchmark these results using the results in standard Gaussian ensembles. Some analytical distribution functions with extremely high accuracy are derived, which automatically satisfy the inverse relation and duality relation. These two measurements satisfy the same universal scaling law during the transition from the Gaussian ensembles to the Poisson ensemble, with critical disorder strength and corresponding exponent are independent of these measurements. These results shade new insight into the stability of many-body localized phase and their universal properties in the disordered many-body systems.

Emergent Haldane phase in an alternating bond $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermion chain

The Haldane phase represents one of the most important symmetry protected states in modern physics. This state can be realized using spin-1 and spin-${1\over 2}$ Heisenberg models and bosonic particles. Here we explore the emergent Haldane phase in an alternating bond $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermion chain, which is different from the previous proposals from fundamental statistics and symmetries. We show that this emergent phase can also be characterized by a modified long-range string order, as well as four-fold degeneracy in the ground state energies and entanglement spectra. This phase is protected by both the charge conjugate and parity symmetry, and the edge modes are shown to satisfy parafermionic statistics, in which braiding of the two edge modes yields a ${2π\over 3}$ phase. This model also supports rich phases, including topological ferromagnetic parafermion (FP) phase, trivial paramagnetic parafermion phase, classical dimer phase and gapless phase. The boundaries of the FP phase are shown to be gapless and critical with central charge $c = 4/5$. Even in the topological FP phase, it is also characterized by the long-range string order, thus we observe a drop of string order across the phase boundary between the FP phase and Haldane phase. These phenomena are quite general and this work opens a new way for finding exotic topological phases in $\mathbb{Z}_k$ parafermion models.

Topological phase, supercritical point and emergent phenomena in extended $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermion chain

Topological orders and associated topological protected excitations satisfying non-Abelian statistics have been widely explored in various platforms. The $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermions are regarded as the most natural generation of the Majorana fermions to realize these topological orders. Here we investigate the topological phase and emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin phases in an extended parafermion chain. This model exhibits rich variety of phases, including not only topological ferromagnetic phase, which supports non-Abelian anyon excitation, but also spin-fluid, dimer and chiral phases from the emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin model. We generalize the measurement tools in $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin models to fully characterize these phases in the extended parafermion model and map out the corresponding phase diagram. Surprisingly, we find that all the phase boundaries finally merge to a single supercritical point. In regarding of the rather generality of emergent phenomena in parafermion models, this approach opens a wide range of intriguing applications in investigating the exotic phases in other parafermion models.
