Holographic Floquet states: (I) A strongly coupled Weyl semimetal

Floquet states can be realized in quantum systems driven by continuous time-periodic perturbations. It is known that a state known as the Floquet Weyl semimetal can be realized when free Dirac fermions are placed in a rotating electric field. What will happen if strong interaction is introduced to this system? Will the interaction wash out the characteristic features of Weyl semimetals such as the Hall response? Is there a steady state and what is its thermodynamic behavior? We answer these questions using AdS/CFT correspondence in the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric massless QCD in a rotating electric field in the large $N_c$ limit realizing the first example of a "holographic Floquet state". In this limit, gluons not only mediate interaction, but also act as an energy reservoir and stabilize the nonequilibrium steady state (NESS). We obtain the electric current induced by a rotating electric field: In the high frequency region, the Ohm's law is satisfied, while we recover the DC nonlinear conductivity at low frequency, which was obtained holographically in a previous work. The thermodynamic properties of the NESS, e.g., fluctuation-dissipation relation, is characterized by the effective Hawking temperature that is defined from the effective horizon giving a holographic meaning to the "periodic thermodynamic" concept. In addition to the strong (pump) rotating electric field, we apply an additional weak (probe) electric field in the spirit of the pump-probe experiments done in condensed matter experiments. Weak DC and AC probe analysis in the background rotating electric field shows Hall currents as a linear response, therefore the Hall response of Floquet Weyl semimetals survives at the strong coupling limit. We also find frequency mixed response currents, i.e., a heterodyning effect, characteristic to periodically driven Floquet systems.

Vacuum excitation by sudden appearance and disappearance of a Dirichlet wall in a cavity

Vacuum excitation by time-varying boundary conditions is not only of fundamental importance but also has recently been confirmed in a laboratory experiment. In this paper, we study the vacuum excitation of a scalar field by the instantaneous appearance and disappearance of a both-sided Dirichlet wall in the middle of a 1D cavity, as toy models of bifurcating and merging spacetimes, respectively. It is shown that the energy flux emitted positively diverges on the null lines emanating from the appearance and disappearance events, which is analogous to the result of Anderson and DeWitt. This result suggests that the semiclassical effect prevents the spacetime both from bifurcating and merging. In addition, we argue that the diverging flux in the disappearance case plays an interesting role to compensate for the lowness of ambient energy density after the disappearance, which is lower than the zero-point level.

Conic D-branes

The shape of D-branes is of fundamental interest in string theory. We find that generically D-branes in trivial spacetime can form a conic shape under external uniform forces. Surprisingly, the apex angle is found to be unique, once the spatial dimensions of the cone is given. In particular it is universal irrespective of the external forces. The quantized angle is reminiscent of Taylor cones of hydrodynamic electrospray. We provide explicit D-brane solutions as well as the mechanism of a force balance on the cone, for D-branes in RR and NSNS flux backgrounds. Critical embedding of probe D-branes in AdS/CFT with electric and magnetic fields is in the same category, for which we give an analytic proof of a power-low spectrum of "turbulent meson condensation."

Meson turbulence at quark deconfinement from AdS/CFT

Based on the QCD string picture at confining phase, we conjecture that the deconfinement transition always accompanies a condensation of higher meson resonances with a power-law behavior, "meson turbulence". We employ the AdS/CFT correspondence to calculate the meson turbulence for $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric QCD at large $N_c$ and at strong coupling limit, and find that the energy distribution to each meson level $n$ scales as $n^α$ with the universal scaling $α=-5$. The universality is checked for various ways to attain the quark deconfinement: a static electric field below/around the critical value, a time-dependent electric field quench, and a time-dependent quark mass quench, all result in the turbulent meson condensation with the universal power $α=-5$ around the deconfinement.

Turbulent meson condensation in quark deconfinement

In a QCD-like strongly coupled gauge theory at large N_c, using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we find that heavy quark deconfinement is accompanied by a coherent condensation of higher meson resonances. This is revealed in non-equilibrium deconfinement transitions triggered by static, as well as, quenched electric fields even below the Schwinger limit. There, we observe a "turbulent" energy flow to higher meson modes, which finally results in the quark deconfinement. Our observation is consistent with seeing deconfinement as a condensation of long QCD strings.

Electric Field Quench in AdS/CFT

An electric field quench, a suddenly applied electric field, can induce nontrivial dynamics in confining systems which may lead to thermalization as well as a deconfinement transition. In order to analyze this nonequilibrium transitions,we use the AdS/CFT correspondence for $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric QCD that has a confining meson sector. We find that the electric field quench causes the deconfinement transition even when the magnitude of the applied electric field is smaller than the critical value for the static case (which is the QCD Schwinger limit for quark-antiquark pair creation). The time dependence is crucial for this phenomenon, and the gravity dual explains it as an oscillation of a D-brane in the bulk AdS spacetime. Interestingly, the deconfinement time takes only discrete values as a function of the magnitude of the electric field. We advocate that the new deconfinement phenomenon is analogous to the exciton Mott transition.

Dynamical Meson Melting in Holography

We discuss mesons in thermalizing gluon backgrounds in the N=2 supersymmetric QCD using the gravity dual. We numerically compute the dynamics of a probe D7-brane in the Vaidya-AdS geometry that corresponds to a D3-brane background thermalizing from zero to finite temperatures by energy injection. In static backgrounds, it has been known that there are two kinds of brane embeddings where the brane intersects the black hole or not. They correspond to the phases with melted or stable mesons. In our dynamical setup, we obtain three cases depending on final temperatures and injection time scales. The brane stays outside of the black hole horizon when the final temperature is low, while it intersects the horizon and settles down to the static equilibrium state when the final temperature is high. Between these two cases, we find the overeager case where the brane dynamically intersects the horizon although the final temperature is not high enough for a static brane to intersect the horizon. The interpretation of this phenomenon in the dual field theory is meson melting due to non-thermal effects caused by rapid energy injection. In addition, we comment on the late time evolution of the brane and a possibility of its reconnection.

What wormhole is traversable?: A case of a wormhole supported by a spherical thin shell

We analytically explore the effect of falling matter on a spherically symmetric wormhole supported by a spherical shell composed of exotic matter located at its throat. The falling matter is assumed to be also a thin spherical shell concentric with the shell supporting the wormhole, and its self-gravity is completely taken into account. We treat these spherical thin shells by Israel's formalism of metric junction. When the falling spherical shell goes through the wormhole, it necessarily collides with the shell supporting the wormhole. To treat this collision, we assume the interaction between these shells is only gravity. We show the conditions on the parameters that characterize this model in which the wormhole persists after the spherical shell goes through it.

Caged black hole with Maxwell charge

We construct the perturbative solution of the charged black hole in the Kaluza-Klein spacetime with the matched asymptotic expansion method. The corrections to the thermodynamic variables are calculated up to the post-Newtonian order. We confirmed that the method can work very well in the Einstein-Maxwell theory.

Angular momentum at null infinity in higher dimensions

We define the angular momentum at null infinity in higher dimensions. The asymptotic symmetry at null infinity becomes the Poincare group in higher dimensions. This fact implies that the angular momentum can be defined without any ambiguities such as supertranslation in four dimensions. Indeed we can show that the angular momentum in our definition is transformed covariantly with respect to the Poincare group.

Hawking temperature for near-equilibrium black holes

We discuss the Hawking temperature of near-equilibrium black holes using a semiclassical analysis. We introduce a useful expansion method for slowly evolving spacetime, and evaluate the Bogoliubov coefficients using the saddle point approximation. For a spacetime whose evolution is sufficiently slow, such as a black hole with slowly changing mass, we find that the temperature is determined by the surface gravity of the past horizon. As an example of applications of these results, we study the Hawking temperature of black holes with null shell accretion in asymptotically flat space and the AdS-Vaidya spacetime. We discuss implications of our results in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Late-time symmetry near black hole horizons

It is expected that black holes are formed dynamically under the gravitational collapses and approach to the stationary states. In this paper, we show that the asymptotic Killing vector at late time should exist on the horizon and then that it can be extended to the out of black holes under the assumption of the analyticity of spacetimes. This fact implies that if there is another asymptotic Killing vector which becomes stationary Killing at far region and spacelike in "ergoregion", the rotating black holes may have the asymptotically axisymmetric Killing vector at late time. Thus, we may expect that the asymptotic rigidity of the black holes holds.

Asymptotic flatness at null infinity in arbitrary dimensions

We define the asymptotic flatness and discuss asymptotic symmetry at null infinity in arbitrary dimensions using the Bondi coordinates. To define the asymptotic flatness, we solve the Einstein equations and look at the asymptotic behavior of gravitational fields. Then we show the asymptotic symmetry and the Bondi mass loss law with the well-defined definition.

Non-equilibrium Condensation Process in a Holographic Superconductor

We study the non-equilibrium condensation process in a holographic superconductor. When the temperature T is smaller than a critical temperature T_c, there are two black hole solutions, the Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black hole and a black hole with a scalar hair. In the boundary theory, they can be regarded as the supercooled normal phase and the superconducting phase, respectively. We consider perturbations on supercooled Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black holes and study their non-linear time evolution to know about physical phenomena associated with rapidly-cooled superconductors. We find that, for T<T_c, the initial perturbations grow exponentially and, eventually, spacetimes approach the hairy black holes. We also clarify how the relaxation process from a far-from-equilibrium state proceeds in the boundary theory by observing the time dependence of the superconducting order parameter. Finally, we study the time evolution of event and apparent horizons and discuss their correspondence with the entropy of the boundary theory. Our result gives a first step toward the holographic understanding of the non-equilibrium process in superconductors.

Thermodynamic and dynamical stability of Freund-Rubin compactification

We investigate stability of two branches of Freund-Rubin compactification from thermodynamic and dynamical perspectives. Freund-Rubin compactification allows not only trivial solutions but also warped solutions describing warped product of external de Sitter space and internal deformed sphere. We study dynamical stability by analyzing linear perturbations around solutions in each branch. Also we study thermodynamic stability based on de Sitter entropy. We show complete agreement of thermodynamic and dynamical stabilities of this system. Finally, we interpret the results in terms of effective energy density in the four-dimensional Einstein frame and discuss cosmological implications.

Consistent Anti-de Sitter-Space/Conformal-Field-Theory Dual for a Time-Dependent Finite Temperature System

We propose a consistent setup for the holographic dual of the strongly coupled large-Nc N=4 super Yang-Mills theory plasma which undergoes the Bjorken flow relevant to the quark-gluon plasma at BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and CERN LHC. The dual geometry is constructed order by order in a well-defined late-time expansion. The transport coefficients are determined by the regularity of the geometry. We prove, for the first time, that the dual geometry has an apparent horizon hence an event horizon, which covers a singularity at the origin. Further we prove that the dual geometry is regular to all orders in the late-time expansion under an appropriate choice of the transport coefficients. This choice is also shown to be unique. Our model serves as a concrete well-defined example of a time-dependent AdS/CFT dual.

A Holographic Dual of Bjorken Flow

We propose a consistent setup for a holographic dual of Bjorken flow of strongly coupled large-Nc N=4 SYM-theory plasma. We employ Eddington-Finkelstein type coordinates for the dual geometry, and we propose a late-time expansion there. We construct the dual geometry order by order, and we show that the transport coefficients are determined by the regularity of the geometry. We also show that the dual geometry has an apparent horizon hence an event horizon, which covers the singularity at the origin. We prove that the dual geometry is regular at all orders under an appropriate choice of the transport coefficients. Our model is a concrete well-defined example of time-dependent AdS/CFT.

Constraints on Wrapped DBI Inflation in a Warped Throat

We derive constraints on the tensor to scalar ratio and on the background charge of the warped throat for DBI inflation driven by D5- and D7-branes wrapped over cycles of the throat. It is shown that the background charge well beyond the known maximal value is required in most cases for DBI inflation to generate cosmological observables compatible with the WMAP3 data. Most of the results derived in this paper are insensitive to the details of the inflaton potential, and could be applied to generic warped throats.
