Prediction of crystal structures and motifs in the Fe-Mg-O system at Earth's core pressures

Fe, Mg, and O are among the most abundant elements in terrestrial planets. While the behavior of the Fe-O, Mg-O, and Fe-Mg binary systems under pressure have been investigated, there are still very few studies of the Fe-Mg-O ternary system at relevant Earth's core and super-Earth's mantle pressures. Here, we use the adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA) to study ternary Fe$_x$Mg$_y$O$_z$ phases in a wide range of stoichiometries at 200 GPa and 350 GPa. We discovered three dynamically stable phases with stoichiometries FeMg$_2$O$_4$, Fe$_2$MgO$_4$, and FeMg$_3$O$_4$ with lower enthalpy than any known combination of Fe-Mg-O high-pressure compounds at 350 GPa. With the discovery of these phases, we construct the Fe-Mg-O ternary convex hull. We further clarify the composition- and pressure-dependence of structural motifs with the analysis of the AGA-found stable and metastable structures. Analysis of binary and ternary stable phases suggest that O, Mg, or both could stabilize a BCC iron alloy at inner core pressures.

Significant Second-Harmonic Generation and Bulk Photovoltaic Effect in Trigonal Selenium and Tellurium Chains

One-dimensional selenium and tellurium crystalize in helical chainlike structures and thus exhibit fascinating properties. By performing first-principles calculations, we have researched the linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of 1D Se and Te, and find that both systems exhibit pronounced NLO responses. In particular, 1D Se is found to possess large second-harmonic generation coefficient being up to 7 times larger than that of GaN, and even is several times larger than that of the bulk counterpart. On the other hand, 1D Te also produces significant NLO susceptibility which exceeds the bulk GaN by 5 times. Furthermore, 1D Te is shown to possess prominent linear electro-optic coefficient rxxx(0). Particularly, Te chain exhibits large shift current response and the maximum is more than the maximal photovoltaic responses obtained from BaTiO3 by 2 times. Therefore, 1D Se and Te may find potential applications in solar energy conversion, electro-optical switches, and so on. Finally, much stronger NLO effects of 1D Se and Te are attributed to their one-dimensional structures with high anisotropy, strong covalent bonding and lone-pair electrons. These findings will contribute to the further study in experiments and search for excellent materials with large NLO effects.

Large Second-Harmonic Generation and Linear Electro-Optic Effect in Trigonal Selenium and Tellurium

Trigonal selenium and tellurium crystalize in helical chain-like structures and thus possess interesting properties such as current-induced spin polarization, gyrotropic effects and nonlinear optical responses. By performing systematic ab initio calculations based on density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation plus scissors correction, we study their linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. We find that the two materials exhibit significant second-harmonic generation (SHG) and linear electro-optic (LEO) effect. In particular, the SHG coefficients of tellurium are huge in the photon energy range of 0 ~ 3 eV, with the magnitudes of SHG(xxx) being as large as 3640 pm/V, which are about sixteen times larger than that of GaN, a widely used NLO material. On the other hand, trigonal selenium is found to possesses large LEO coefficients r(xxx,0) which are more than six times larger than that of GaN.Therefore, trigonal tellurium and selenium may find valuable applications in NLO and LEO devices such as frequency conversion, electro-optical switch and light signal modulator. The energy positions and shapes of the principal features in the calculated optical dielectric functions of both materials agree rather well with the available experimental ones, and are also analyzed in terms of the calculated band structures especially symmetries of the involved band states and dipole transition selection rules.

Large magneto-optical effects and magnetic anisotropy energy in two-dimensional Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$

By performing systematic $ab$ $initio$ density functional calculations, here we study two relativity-induced properties of atomically thin ferromagnetic (FM) Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ films [monolayer (ML), bilayer (BL) and trilayer (TL) as well as bulk], namely, magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) and magneto-optical (MO) effects. Competing contributions of both magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy (C-MAE) and magnetic dipolar anisotropy energy (D-MAE) to the MAE, are computed. Calculated MAEs of these materials are large, being in the order of $\sim$0.1 meV/Cr. Interestingly, we find that the out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy is preferred in all the systems except the ML where an in-plane magnetization is favored because here the D-MAE is larger than the C-MAE. Crucially, this explains why long-range FM order was observed in all the few-layer Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ except the ML because the out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy would open a spin-wave gap and thus suppress magnetic fluctuations so that long-range FM order could be stabilized at finite temperature. In the visible frequency range, large Kerr rotations up to $\sim$1.0 deg in these materials are predicted and they are comparable to that observed in famous MO materials such as PtMnSb and Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$. Moreover, they are $\sim$100 times larger than that of 3$d$ transition metal MLs deposited on Au surfaces. Faraday rotation angles in these 2D materials are also large, being up to $\sim$120 deg/$μ$m, and are thus comparable to the best-known MO semiconductor Bi$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$. These findings thus suggest that with large MAE and MO effects, atomically thin Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ films would have potential applications in novel magnetic, MO and spintronic nanodevices.

Structures and magnetic properties of iron silicide from adaptive genetic algorithm and first-principles calculations

We performed a systematic search for low-energy structures of binary iron silicide over a wide range of compositions using the crystal structure prediction method based on adaptive genetic algorithm. 36 structures with formation energies within 50 meV/atom (11 of them are within 20 meV) above the convex hull formed by experimentally known stable structures are predicted. Magnetic properties of these low-energy structures are investigated. Some of these structures can be promising candidates for rare-earth-free permanent magnet.

Phase transitions in MgSiO3 post-perovskite in super-Earth mantles

The highest pressure form of the major Earth-forming mantle silicate is MgSiO3 post-perovskite (PPv). Understanding the fate of PPv at TPa pressures is the first step for understanding the mineralogy of super-Earths-type exoplanets, arguably the most interesting for their similarities with Earth. Modeling their internal structure requires knowledge of stable mineral phases, their properties under compression, and major element abundances. Several studies of PPv under extreme pressures support the notion that a sequence of pressure induced dissociation transitions produce the elementary oxides SiO2 and MgO as the ultimate aggregation form at ~3 TPa. However, none of these studies have addressed the problem of mantle composition, particularly major element abundances usually expressed in terms of three main variables, the Mg/Si and Fe/Si ratios and the Mg#, as in the Earth. Here we show that the critical compositional parameter, the Mg/Si ratio, whose value in the Earth's mantle is still debated, is a vital ingredient for modeling phase transitions and internal structure of super-Earth mantles. Specifically, we have identified new sequences of phase transformations, including new recombination reactions that depend decisively on this ratio. This is a new level of complexity that has not been previously addressed, but proves essential for modeling the nature and number of internal layers in these rocky mantles.

Structures, phase transitions, and magnetic properties of Co3Si from first-principles calculations

Co3Si was recently reported to exhibit remarkable magnetic properties in the nanoparticle form [Appl. Phys. Lett. 108, 152406 (2016)], yet better understanding of this material is to be promoted. Here we report a study on the crystal structures of Co3Si using adaptive genetic algorithm, and discuss its electronic and magnetic properties from first-principles calculations. Several competing phases of Co3Si have been revealed from our calculations. We show that the hexagonal Co3Si structure reported in experiments has lower energy in non-magnetic state than ferromagnetic state at zero temperature. The ferromagnetic state of the hexagonal structure is dynamically unstable with imaginary phonon modes and transforms to a new orthorhombic structure, which is confirmed by our structure searches to have the lowest energy for both Co3Si and Co3Ge. Magnetic properties of the experimental hexagonal structure and the lowest-energy structures obtained from our structure searches are investigated in detail.

Exploration of tetrahedral structures in silicate cathodes using a motif-network scheme

Using a motif-network search scheme, we studied the tetrahedral structures of the dilithium/disodium transition metal orthosilicates A2MSiO4 with A = Li or Na and M = Mn, Fe or Co. In addition to finding all previously reported structures, we discovered many other different tetrahedral-network-based crystal structures which are highly degenerate in energy. These structures can be classified into structures with 1D, 2D and 3D M-Si-O frameworks. A clear trend of the structural preference in different systems was revealed and possible indicators that affect the structure stabilities were introduced. For the case of Na systems which have been much less investigated in the literature relative to the Li systems, we predicted their ground state structures and found evidence for the existence of new structural motifs.
