Efficient Sparse Code Multiple Access Decoder Based on Deterministic Message Passing Algorithm

Being an effective non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique, sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is promising for future wireless communication. Compared with orthogonal techniques, SCMA enjoys higher overloading tolerance and lower complexity because of its sparsity. In this paper, based on deterministic message passing algorithm (DMPA), algorithmic simplifications such as domain changing and probability approximation are applied for SCMA decoding. Early termination, adaptive decoding, and initial noise reduction are also employed for faster convergence and better performance. Numerical results show that the proposed optimizations benefit both decoding complexity and speed. Furthermore, efficient hardware architectures based on folding and retiming are proposed. VLSI implementation is also given in this paper. Comparison with the state-of-the-art have shown the proposed decoder's advantages in both latency and throughput (multi-Gbps).

On the Low-Complexity, Hardware-Friendly Tridiagonal Matrix Inversion for Correlated Massive MIMO Systems

In massive MIMO (M-MIMO) systems, one of the key challenges in the implementation is the large-scale matrix inversion operation, as widely used in channel estimation, equalization, detection, and decoding procedures. Traditionally, to handle this complexity issue, several low-complexity matrix inversion approximation methods have been proposed, including the classic Cholesky decomposition and the Neumann series expansion (NSE). However, the conventional approaches failed to exploit neither the special structure of channel matrices nor the critical issues in the hardware implementation, which results in poorer throughput performance and longer processing delay. In this paper, by targeting at the correlated M-MIMO systems, we propose a modified NSE based on tridiagonal matrix inversion approximation (TMA) to accommodate the complexity as well as the performance issue in the conventional hardware implementation, and analyze the corresponding approximation errors. Meanwhile, we investigate the VLSI implementation for the proposed detection algorithm based on a Xilinx Virtex-7 XC7VX690T FPGA platform. It is shown that for correlated massive MIMO systems, it can achieve near-MMSE performance and $630$ Mb/s throughput. Compared with other benchmark systems, the proposed pipelined TMA detector can get high throughput-to-hardware ratio. Finally, we also propose a fast iteration structure for further research.

Residual-Based Detections and Unified Architecture for Massive MIMO Uplink

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (M-MIMO) technique brings better energy efficiency and coverage but higher computational complexity than small-scale MIMO. For linear detections such as minimum mean square error (MMSE), prohibitive complexity lies in solving large-scale linear equations. For a better trade-off between bit-error-rate (BER) performance and computational complexity, iterative linear algorithms like conjugate gradient (CG) have been applied and have shown their feasibility in recent years. In this paper, residual-based detection (RBD) algorithms are proposed for M-MIMO detection, including minimal residual (MINRES) algorithm, generalized minimal residual (GMRES) algorithm, and conjugate residual (CR) algorithm. RBD algorithms focus on the minimization of residual norm per iteration, whereas most existing algorithms focus on the approximation of exact signal. Numerical results have shown that, for $64$-QAM $128\times 8$ MIMO, RBD algorithms are only $0.13$ dB away from the exact matrix inversion method when BER$=10^{-4}$. Stability of RBD algorithms has also been verified in various correlation conditions. Complexity comparison has shown that, CR algorithm require $87\%$ less complexity than the traditional method for $128\times 60$ MIMO. The unified hardware architecture is proposed with flexibility, which guarantees a low-complexity implementation for a family of RBD M-MIMO detectors.

Distributed Coordinated Multicell Beamforming for Wireless Cellular Networks Powered by Renewables: A Stochastic ADMM Approach

The integration of renewable energy sources (RES) has facilitated efficient and sustainable resource allocation for wireless communication systems. In this paper, a novel framework is introduced to develop coordinated multicell beamforming (CMBF) design for wireless cellular networks powered by a smart microgrid, where the BSs are equipped with RES harvesting devices and can perform two-way (i.e., buying/selling) energy trading with the main grid. To this end, new models are put forth to account for the stochastic RES harvesting, two-way energy trading, and conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) based energy transaction cost. Capitalizing on these models, we propose a distributed CMBF solution to minimize the grid-wide transaction cost subject to user quality-of-service (QoS) constraints. Specifically, relying on state-of-the-art optimization tools, we show that the relevant task can be formulated as a convex problem that is well suited for development of a distributed solver. To cope with stochastic availability of the RES, the stochastic alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is then leveraged to develop a novel distributed CMBF scheme. It is established that the proposed scheme is guaranteed to yield the optimal CMBF solution, with only local channel state information available at each BS and limited information exchange among the BSs. Numerical results are provided to corroborate the merits of the proposed scheme.

Fundamental Green Tradeoffs: Progresses, Challenges, and Impacts on 5G Networks

With years of tremendous traffic and energy consumption growth, green radio has been valued not only for theoretical research interests but also for the operational expenditure reduction and the sustainable development of wireless communications. Fundamental green tradeoffs, served as an important framework for analysis, include four basic relationships: spectrum efficiency (SE) versus energy efficiency (EE), deployment efficiency (DE) versus energy efficiency (EE), delay (DL) versus power (PW), and bandwidth (BW) versus power (PW). In this paper, we first provide a comprehensive overview on the extensive on-going research efforts and categorize them based on the fundamental green tradeoffs. We will then focus on research progresses of 4G and 5G communications, such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and non-orthogonal aggregation (NOA), multiple input multiple output (MIMO), and heterogeneous networks (HetNets). We will also discuss potential challenges and impacts of fundamental green tradeoffs, to shed some light on the energy efficient research and design for future wireless networks.

Precoder Design for Multi-antenna Partial Decode-and-Forward (PDF) Cooperative Systems with Statistical CSIT and MMSE-SIC Receivers

Cooperative communication is an important technology in next generation wireless networks. Aside from conventional amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) protocols, the partial decode-and-forward (PDF) protocol is an alternative relaying scheme that is especially promising for scenarios in which the relay node cannot reliably decode the complete source message. However, there are several important issues to be addressed regarding the application of PDF protocols. In this paper, we propose a PDF protocol and MIMO precoder designs at the source and relay nodes. The precoder designs are adapted based on statistical channel state information for correlated MIMO channels, and matched to practical minimum mean-square-error successive interference cancelation (MMSE-SIC) receivers at the relay and destination nodes. We show that under similar system settings, the proposed MIMO precoder design with PDF protocol and MMSE-SIC receivers achieves substantial performance enhancement compared with conventional baselines.

Energy Efficient Iterative Waterfilling for the MIMO Broadcasting Channels

Optimizing energy efficiency (EE) for the MIMO broadcasting channels (BC) is considered in this paper, where a practical power model is taken into account. Although the EE of the MIMO BC is non-concave, we reformulate it as a quasiconcave function based on the uplink-downlink duality. After that, an energy efficient iterative waterfilling scheme is proposed based on the block-coordinate ascent algorithm to obtain the optimal transmission policy efficiently, and the solution is proved to be convergent. Through simulations, we validate the efficiency of the proposed scheme and discuss the system parameters' effect on the EE.

A Survey on Delay-Aware Resource Control for Wireless Systems --- Large Deviation Theory, Stochastic Lyapunov Drift and Distributed Stochastic Learning

In this tutorial paper, a comprehensive survey is given on several major systematic approaches in dealing with delay-aware control problems, namely the equivalent rate constraint approach, the Lyapunov stability drift approach and the approximate Markov Decision Process (MDP) approach using stochastic learning. These approaches essentially embrace most of the existing literature regarding delay-aware resource control in wireless systems. They have their relative pros and cons in terms of performance, complexity and implementation issues. For each of the approaches, the problem setup, the general solution and the design methodology are discussed. Applications of these approaches to delay-aware resource allocation are illustrated with examples in single-hop wireless networks. Furthermore, recent results regarding delay-aware multi-hop routing designs in general multi-hop networks are elaborated. Finally, the delay performance of the various approaches are compared through simulations using an example of the uplink OFDMA systems.

Fundamental Tradeoffs on Green Wireless Networks

Traditional design of mobile wireless networks mainly focuses on ubiquitous access and large capacity. However, as energy saving and environmental protection become a global demand and inevitable trend, wireless researchers and engineers need to shift their focus to energy-efficiency oriented design, that is, green radio. In this paper, we propose a framework for green radio research and integrate the fundamental issues that are currently scattered. The skeleton of the framework consists of four fundamental tradeoffs: deployment efficiency - energy efficiency tradeoff, spectrum efficiency - energy efficiency tradeoff, bandwidth - power tradeoff, and delay - power tradeoff. With the help of the four fundamental tradeoffs, we demonstrate that key network performance/cost indicators are all stringed together.

Multi-Relay Selection Design and Analysis for Multi-Stream Cooperative Communications

In this paper, we consider the problem of multi-relay selection for multi-stream cooperative MIMO systems with $M$ relay nodes. Traditionally, relay selection approaches are primarily focused on selecting one relay node to improve the transmission reliability given a single-antenna destination node. As such, in the cooperative phase whereby both the source and the selected relay nodes transmit to the destination node, it is only feasible to exploit cooperative spatial diversity (for example by means of distributed space time coding). For wireless systems with a multi-antenna destination node, in the cooperative phase it is possible to opportunistically transmit multiple data streams to the destination node by utilizing multiple relay nodes. Therefore, we propose a low overhead multi-relay selection protocol to support multi-stream cooperative communications. In addition, we derive the asymptotic performance results at high SNR for the proposed scheme and discuss the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff as well as the throughput-reliability tradeoff. From these results, we show that the proposed multi-stream cooperative communication scheme achieves lower outage probability compared to existing baseline schemes.

Game Theoretical Power Control for Open-Loop Overlaid Network MIMO Systems with Partial Cooperation

Network MIMO is considered to be a key solution for the next generation wireless systems in breaking the interference bottleneck in cellular systems. In the MIMO systems, open-loop transmission scheme is used to support mobile stations (MSs) with high mobilities because the base stations (BSs) do not need to track the fast varying channel fading. In this paper, we consider an open-loop network MIMO system with $K$ BSs serving K private MSs and $M^c$ common MS based on a novel partial cooperation overlaying scheme. Exploiting the heterogeneous path gains between the private MSs and the common MSs, each of the $K$ BSs serves a private MS non-cooperatively and the $K$ BSs also serve the $M^c$ common MSs cooperatively. The proposed scheme does not require closed loop instantaneous channel state information feedback, which is highly desirable for high mobility users. Furthermore, we formulate the long-term distributive power allocation problem between the private MSs and the common MSs at each of the $K$ BSs using a partial cooperative game. We show that the long-term power allocation game has a unique Nash Equilibrium (NE) but standard best response update may not always converge to the NE. As a result, we propose a low-complexity distributive long-term power allocation algorithm which only relies on the local long-term channel statistics and has provable convergence property. Through numerical simulations, we show that the proposed open-loop SDMA scheme with long-term distributive power allocation can achieve significant performance advantages over the other reference baseline schemes.

Protocol design and stability/delay analysis of half-duplex buffered cognitive relay systems

In this paper, we quantify the benefits of employing relay station in large-coverage cognitive radio systems which opportunistically access the licensed spectrum of some small-coverage primary systems scattered inside. Through analytical study, we show that even a simple decode-and-forward (SDF) relay, which can hold only one packet, offers significant path-loss gain in terms of the spatial transmission opportunities and link reliability. However, such scheme fails to capture the spatial-temporal burstiness of the primary activities, that is, when either the source-relay (SR) link or relay-destination (RD) link is blocked by the primary activities, the cognitive spectrum access has to stop. To overcome this obstacle, we further propose buffered decode-and-forward (BDF) protocol. By exploiting the infinitely long buffer at the relay, the blockage time on either SR or RD link is saved for cognitive spectrum access. The buffer gain is shown analytically to improve the stability region and average end-to-end delay performance of the cognitive relay system.

A Low-Overhead Energy Detection Based Cooperative Sensing Protocol for Cognitive Radio Systems

Cognitive radio and dynamic spectrum access represent a new paradigm shift in more effective use of limited radio spectrum. One core component behind dynamic spectrum access is the sensing of primary user activity in the shared spectrum. Conventional distributed sensing and centralized decision framework involving multiple sensor nodes is proposed to enhance the sensing performance. However, it is difficult to apply the conventional schemes in reality since the overhead in sensing measurement and sensing reporting as well as in sensing report combining limit the number of sensor nodes that can participate in distributive sensing. In this paper, we shall propose a novel, low overhead and low complexity energy detection based cooperative sensing framework for the cognitive radio systems which addresses the above two issues. The energy detection based cooperative sensing scheme greatly reduces the quiet period overhead (for sensing measurement) as well as sensing reporting overhead of the secondary systems and the power scheduling algorithm dynamically allocate the transmission power of the cooperative sensor nodes based on the channel statistics of the links to the BS as well as the quality of the sensing measurement. In order to obtain design insights, we also derive the asymptotic sensing performance of the proposed cooperative sensing framework based on the mobility model. We show that the false alarm and mis-detection performance of the proposed cooperative sensing framework improve as we increase the number of cooperative sensor nodes.
