Topological transition between competing orders in quantum spin chains

We study quantum phase transitions between competing orders in one-dimensional spin systems. We focus on systems that can be mapped to a dual-field double sine-Gordon model as a bosonized effective field theory. This model contains two pinning potential terms of dual fields that stabilize competing orders and allows different types of quantum phase transition to happen between two ordered phases. At the transition point, elementary excitations change from the topological soliton of one of the dual fields to that of the other, thus it can be characterized as a topological transition. We compute the dynamical susceptibilities and the entanglement entropy, which gives us access to the central charge, of the system using a numerical technique of infinite time-evolving block decimation and characterize the universality class of the transition as well as the nature of the order in each phase. The possible realizations of such transitions in experimental systems both for condensed matter and cold atomic gases are also discussed.

Ground-State Phase Diagram of an Anisotropic S=1/2 Ladder with Different Leg Interactions

We explore the ground-state phase diagram of the $S=1/2$ two-leg ladder with different leg interactions. The $xy$ and $z$ components of the leg interactions between nearest-neighbor spins in the $a$ ($b$) leg are respectively denoted by $J_{{\rm l},a}$ and $Δ_{\rm l} J_{{\rm l},a}$ ($J_{{\rm l},b}$ and $Δ_{\rm l} J_{{\rm l},b}$). On the other hand, the $xy$ and $z$ components of the uniform rung interactions are respectively denoted by $Γ_{\rm r} J_{\rm r}$ and $J_{\rm r}$. In the above, $Δ_{\rm l}$ and $Γ_{\rm r}$ are the $XXZ$-type anisotropy parameters for the leg and rung interactions, respectively. This system has a frustration when $J_{{\rm l},a} J_{{\rm l},b}<0$ irrespective of the sign of $J_{\rm r}$. The phase diagram on the $Δ_{\rm l}$ ($|Δ_{\rm l}| \leq 1.0$) versus $J_{{\rm l},b}$ ($-2.0\leq J_{{\rm l},b}\leq 3.0$) plane in the case where $J_{{\rm l},a}=0.2$, $J_{\rm r}=-1.0$, and $Γ_{\rm r} = 0.5$ is determined numerically. We employ the physical consideration, and the level spectroscopy and phenomenological renormalization-group analyses of the numerical date obtained by the exact diagonalization method. The resultant phase diagram contains the ferromagnetic, Haldane, N{é}el, nematic Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL), partial ferrimagnetic, and $XY1$ phases. Interestingly enough, the nematic TLL phase appears in the strong-rung unfrustrated region as well as in the strong-rung frustrated one. We perform the first-order perturbational calculations from the strong rung coupling limit to elucidate the characteristic features of the phase diagram. Furthermore, we make the density-matrix renormalization-group calculations for some physical quantities such as the energy gaps, the local magnetization, and the spin correlation functions to supplement the reliability of the phase diagram.

Electron spin resonance for the detection of long-range spin nematic order

In this paper we propose that electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements enable us to detect the long-range spin nematic order. We show that the frequency of the paramagnetic resonance peak in the ESR spectrum is shifted by the ferroquadrupolar order parameter together with other quantities. The ferroquadrupolar order parameter is extractable from the angular dependence of the frequency shift. In contrast, the antiferroquadrupolar order parameter is usually invisible in the frequency shift. Instead, the long-range antiferroquadrupolar order yields a characteristic resonance peak in the ESR spectrum, which we call a magnon-pair resonance peak. This resonance corresponds to the excitation of the bound magnon pair at the wave vector $\bm k={\bm 0}$. Reflecting the condensation of bound magnon pairs, the field dependence of the magnon-pair resonance frequency shows a singular upturn at the saturation field. Moreover, the intensity of the magnon-pair resonance peak shows a characteristic angular dependence and it vanishes when the magnetic field is parallel to one of the axes that diagonalize the weak anisotropic interactions. We confirm these general properties of the magnon-pair resonance peak in the spin nematic phase by studying an $S=1$ bilinear-biquadratic model on the square lattice in the linear flavor-wave approximation. In addition, we argue applications to the $S=1/2$ frustrated ferromagnets and also the $S=1/2$ orthogonal dimer spin system SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$, both of which are candidate materials of spin nematics. Our theory for the antiferroquadrupolar ordered phase is consistent with many features of the magnon-pair resonance peak experimentally observed in the low-magnetization regime of SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$.

Angular dependence of electron spin resonance for detecting quadrupolar liquid state of frustrated spin chains

Spin nematic phase is a phase of frustrated quantum magnets with a quadrupolar order of electron spins. Since the spin nematic order is usually masked in experimentally accessible quantities, it is important to develop a methodology for detecting the spin nematic order experimentally. In this paper we propose a convenient method for detecting quasi-long-range spin nematic correlations of a quadrupolar Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state of $S=1/2$ frustrated ferromagnetic spin chain compounds, using electron spin resonance (ESR). We focus on linewidth of a so-called paramagnetic resonance peak in ESR absorption spectrum. We show that a characteristic angular dependence of the linewidth on the direction of magnetic field arises in the spin nematic phase. Measurments of the angular dependence give a signature of the quadrupolar Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state. In our method we change only the direction of the magnetic field, keeping the magnitude of the magnetic field and the temperature. Therefore, our method is advantageous for investigating the one-dimensional quadrupolar liquid phase that usually occupies only a narrow region of the phase diagram.

Symmetry protection of critical phases and global anomaly in $1+1$ dimensions

We derive a selection rule among the $(1+1)$-dimensional SU(2) Wess-Zumino-Witten theories, based on the global anomaly of the discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry found by Gepner and Witten. In the presence of both the SU(2) and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetries, a renormalization-group flow is possible between level-$k$ and level-$k'$ Wess-Zumino-Witten theories only if $k\equiv k' \mod{2}$. This classifies the Lorentz-invariant, SU(2)-symmetric critical behavior into two "symmetry-protected" categories corresponding to even and odd levels, restricting possible gapless critical behavior of translation-invariant quantum spin chains.

Dimensional modulation of spontaneous magnetic order in quasi-two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets

Spontaneous symmetry breaking is deeply related to dimensionality of system. The Neel order going with spontaneous breaking of $U(1)$ symmetry is safely allowed at any temperature for three-dimensional systems but allowed only at zero temperature for purely two-dimensional systems. We closely investigate how smoothly the ordering process of the three-dimensional system is modulated into that of the two-dimensional one with reduction of dimensionality, considering spatially anisotropic quantum antiferromagnets. We first show that the Néel temperature is kept finite even in the two-dimensional limit although the Néel order is greatly suppressed for low-dimensionality. This feature of the Néel temperature is highly nontrivial, which dictates how the order parameter is squashed under the reduction of dimensionality. Next we investigate this dimensional modulation of the order parameter. We develop our argument taking as example a coupled spin-ladder system relevant for experimental studies. The ordering process is investigated multidirectionally using theoretical techniques of a mean-field method combined with analytical (exact solutions of quantum field theories) or numerial (density-matrix renormalization-group) method, a variational method, a renormalization-group study, linear spin-wave theory, and quantum Monte-Carlo simulation. We show that these methods independent of each other lead to the same conclusion about the dimensional modulation.

Negative Coulomb Drag in Coupled Quantum Wires

We present a theory of negative Coulomb drag in capacitively coupled quantum wires based on the commensurability of the electron density and the long-range nature of the Coulomb interaction in the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. The commensurability introduces a notion of doped particles and holes. We point out that the long-range interaction allows a particle-hole pairing over the wires and that the particle-hole pairing brings about the positive drag of holes, that is, the negative drag.

Electron Spin Resonance in Quasi-One-Dimensional Quantum Antiferromagnets: Relevance of Weak Interchain Interactions

We discuss universal features on the electron spin resonance (ESR) of a temperature-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase in a wide class of weakly coupled $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic spin chains such as spin ladders, spin tubes and three-dimensionally coupled spin chains. We show that the ESR linewidth of various coupled chains increases with lowering temperature while the linewidth of a single spin chain is typically proportional to temperature. This broadening with lowering temperature is attributed to anisotropic interchain interactions and has been indeed observed in several kinds of three-dimensional (3D) magnets of weakly coupled spin chains above the 3D ordering temperature. We demonstrate that our theory can account for anomalous behaviors of the linewidths in an $S=1/2$ four-leg spin tube compound Cu$_2$Cl$_4 \cdot $H$_8$C$_4$SO$_2$ (abbreviated to Sul-Cu$_2$Cl$_4$) and a three-dimensionally coupled $S=1/2$ spin chain compound CuCl$_2\cdot 2$NC$_5$H$_5$.

Spontaneously magnetized Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid in frustrated quantum antiferromagnets

We develop a theory of spontaneously magnetized Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (SMTLL) in geometrically frustrated quasi-one-dimensional quantum magnets by taking an $S=1/2$ ferrimagnet on a union-jack lattice as an example. We show that a strong frustration leads to a spontaneous magnetization because of the ferrimagnetic nature of lattice. Due to the ferrimagnetic order, the local magnetization has an incommensurate oscillation with the position. We show that the spontaneously magnetized TLL is smoothly connected to the existence of a Nambu-Goldstone boson in the canted ferrimagnetic phase of a two-dimensional frustrated antiferromagnet.

Dimerizations in spin-$S$ antiferromagnetic chains with three-spin interaction

We discuss spin-$S$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with three-spin interactions, next-nearest-neighbor interactions, and bond alternation. First, we prove rigorously that there exist parameter regions of the exact dimerized ground state in this system. This is a generalization of the Majumdar-Ghosh model to arbitrary $S$. Next, we discuss the ground-state phase diagram of the models by introducing several effective field theories and the universality classes of the transitions are described by the level-$2S$ $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model and the Gaussian model. Finally, we determine the phase diagrams of $S=1$ and $S=3/2$ systems by using exact diagonalization and level spectroscopy.

Electron spin resonance shifts in S=1 antiferromagnetic chains

We discuss electron spin resonance (ESR) shifts in spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with a weak single-ion anisotropy based on several effective field theories, the O(3) nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) in the Haldane phase, free fermion theories around the lower and the upper critical fields. In the O(3) NLSM, the single-ion anisotropy corresponds to a composite operator which creates two magnons at the same time and position. Therefore, even inside a parameter range where free magnon approximation is valid, we have to take interactions among magnons into account. Though the O(3) NLSM is only valid in the Haldane phase, an appropriate translation of Faddeev-Zamolodchikov operators of the O(3) NLSM to fermion operators enables one to treat ESR shifts near the lower critical field in a similar manner to discussions in Haldane phase. We present that our theory gives quantitative agreements with recent ESR experimental results on an spin-1 chain compounds NDMAP.

Anomalous behavior of the spin gap of a spin-1/2 two-leg antiferromagnetic ladder with Ising-like rung interactions

Using mainly numerical methods, we investigate the width of the spin gap of a spin-1/2 two-leg ladder described by $\cH= J_\rl \sum_{j=1}^{N/2} [ \vS_{j,a} \cdot \vS_{j+1,a} + \vS_{j,b} \cdot \vS_{j+1,b} ] + J_\rr \sum_{j=1}^{N/2} [λ(S^x_{j,a} S^x_{j,b} + S^y_{j,a} S^y_{j,b}) + S^z_{j,a} S^z_{j,b}] $, where $S^α_{j,a(b)}$ denotes the $α$-component of the spin-1/2 operator at the $j$-th site of the $a (b)$ chain. We mainly focus on the $J_\rr \gg J_\rl > 0$ and $|λ| \ll 1$ case. The width of the spin gap as a function of $λ$ anomalously increases near $λ= 0$; for instance, for $-0.1 < λ< 0.1$ when $J_{\rm l}/J_{\rm r} = 0.1$. The gap formation mechanism is thought to be different for the $λ< 0$ and $λ> 0$ cases. Since, in usual cases, the width of the gap becomes zero or small at the point where the gap formation mechanism changes, the above gap-increasing phenomenon in the present case is anomalous. We explain the origin of this anomalous phenomenon by use of the degenerate perturbation theory. We also draw the ground-state phase diagram.

Boundary Resonances in S = 1/2 Antiferromagnetic Chains under a Staggered Field

We develop a boundary field theory approach to electron spin resonance in open $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with an effective staggered field. In terms of the sine Gordon effective field theory with boundaries,we point out the existence of boundary bound states of elementary excitations, and modification of the selection rules at the boundary. We argue that several "unknown modes" found in electron spin resonance experiments on KCuGaF$_6$ [I. Umegaki et al., Phys. Rev. B 79, 184401 (2009)] and Cu-PM [S. A. Zvyagin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 027201 (2004)] can be understood as boundary resonances introduced by these effects.

Electron spin resonance shift in spin ladder compounds

We analyze the effects of different coupling anisotropies in spin-1/2 ladder on the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) shift. Combining a perturbative expression in the anisotropies with temperature dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group (T-DMRG) computation of the short range correlations, we provide the full temperature and magnetic field evolution of the ESR paramagnetic shift. We show that for well chosen parameters the ESR shift can be in principle used to extract quantitatively the anisotropies and, as an example, discuss the material $\mathrm{(C_5H_{12}N)_2CuBr_4}$ (BPCB).

Single-ion anisotropy in Haldane chains and form factor of the O(3) nonlinear sigma model

We consider spin-1 Haldane chains with single-ion anisotropy, which exists in known Haldane chain materials. We develop a perturbation theory in terms of anisotropy, where magnon-magnon interaction is important even in the low temperature limit. The exact two-particle form factor in the O(3) nonlinear sigma model leads to quantitative predictions on several dynamical properties including dynamical structure factor and electron spin resonance frequency shift. These agree very well with numerical results, and with experimental data on the Haldane chain material Ni(C$_5$H$_{14}$N$_2$)$_2$N$_3$(PF$_6$).

A semi-classical approach to electron spin resonance in quantum spin systems

We develop a semi-classical approximation to electron spin resonance in quantum spin systems, based on the rotor or non-linear sigma model. The classical time evolution is studied using molec- ular dynamics while random initial conditions are sampled using classical Monte Carlo methods. Although the approximation may be especially powerful in two dimensions, we apply it here to one- dimensional systems of large spin at intermediate temperatures, in the presence of staggered and uniform magnetic fields. We first test the validity of the semi-classical approximation by comparing the magnetization to quantum Monte Carlo results on S = 2 chains. Then we calculate the ESR spectrum, finding broad coexisting paramagnetic and spin wave resonances.
