Phase diagram of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder with a chirality-chirality interaction

A spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with a chirality-chirality interaction (CCI) on a two-leg ladder provides a minimal setup to explore an interplay between spin and chirality degrees of freedom. This model is potentially relevant for understanding the effects of a four-spin ring exchange and a phonon-mediated interaction on a ladder. By applying the Abelian bosonization and two types of spin-chirality duality, we derive a comprehensive ground-state phase diagram that includes previously unexplored cases of a ferromagnetic rung exchange $J_\perp<0$ or a negative CCI $K_{\rm ch}<0$. The phase diagram consists of the rung singlet (RS) phase, the Haldane phase, and three non-magnetic ordered phases. Moreover, the RS and Haldane phases consist of several regions with different dominant correlations in terms of spin, dimer, or chirality. We perform numerical simulations to confirm the predicted phase structure and critical properties.

System-environment entanglement phase transitions

Entanglement in quantum many-body systems can exhibit universal phenomena governed by long-distance properties. We study universality and phase transitions of the entanglement inherent to open many-body systems, namely, the entanglement between a system of interest and its environment. Specifically, we consider the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) under a local measurement and analyze its unconditioned nonunitary evolution, where the measurement outcomes are averaged over. We quantify the system-environment entanglement by the Rényi entropy of the post-measurement density matrix, whose size-independent term encodes the universal low-energy physics. We develop a field-theoretical description to relate the universal term to the effective ground-state degeneracy known as the $g$ function in a boundary conformal field theory, and use the renormalization group method to determine its value. We show that the universal contribution is determined by the TLL parameter $K$ and can exhibit singularity signifying an entanglement phase transition. Surprisingly, in certain cases the size-independent contribution can increase as a function of the measurement strength in contrast to what is naïvely expected from the $g$-theorem. We argue that this unconventional behavior could be attributed to the dangerously irrelevant term which has been found in studies of the resistively shunted Josephson junction. We also check these results by numerical calculations in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain subject to a site-resolved measurement. Possible experimental realization in ultracold gases, which requires no postselections, is discussed.

Symmetry, topology, duality, chirality, and criticality in a spin-1/2 XXZ ladder with a four-spin interaction

We study the ground-state phase diagram of a spin-1/2 XXZ model with a chirality-chirality interaction (CCI) on a two-leg ladder. This model offers a minimal setup to study an interplay between spin and chirality degrees of freedom. The spin-chirality duality transformation allows us to relate the regimes of weak and strong CCIs. By applying the Abelian bosonization and the duality, we obtain a rich phase diagram that contains distinct gapped featureless and ordered phases. In particular, Neel and vector chiral orders appear for easy-axis anisotropy, while two distinct symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases appear for easy-plane anisotropy. The two SPT phases can be viewed as twisted variants of the Haldane phase. We also present an effective description in terms of (spinor) hard-core bosons, which reveals critical behavior on the self-dual line in the easy-axis and easy-plane regimes. We perform numerical simulations to confirm the predicted phase structure and critical properties. We further demonstrate that the two SPT phases and a trivial phase are distinguished by topological indices in the presence of certain symmetries. A similar phase structure is expected in a spin-1/2 XXZ ladder with four-spin ring exchange.

Ground-state phase diagram of a spin-1/2 frustrated XXZ ladder

We study the ground-state phase diagram of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ frustrated XXZ ladder, in which two antiferromagnetic chains are coupled by competing rung and diagonal interactions, $J_\perp$ and $J_\times$. Previous studies on the isotropic model have revealed that a fluctuation-induced effective dimer attraction between the legs stabilizes the columnar dimer (CD) phase in the highly frustrated regime $J_\perp\approx 2J_\times$, especially for ferromagnetic $J_{\perp, \times}<0$. By means of effective field theory and numerical analyses, we extend this analysis to the XXZ model, and obtain a rich phase diagram. The diagram includes four gapped featureless phases with no symmetry breaking: the rung singlet (RS) and Haldane phases as well as their twisted variants, the RS* and Haldane* phases, which are all distinct in the presence of certain symmetries. Significantly, the Haldane-CD transition point in the isotropic model turns out to be a crossing point of two transition lines in the XXZ model, and the stripe Néel and RS* phases appear between these lines. This indicates a nontrivial interplay between the effective dimer attraction and the exchange anisotropy. In the easy-plane regime, the four featureless phases and two critical phases are found to compete in a complex manner depending on the signs of $J_{\perp, \times}$.

Vortex lattices in binary Bose-Einstein condensates: Collective modes, quantum fluctuations, and intercomponent entanglement

We study binary Bose-Einstein condensates subject to synthetic magnetic fields in mutually parallel or antiparallel directions. Within the mean-field theory, the two types of fields have been shown to give the same vortex-lattice phase diagram. We develop an improved effective field theory to study properties of collective modes and ground-state intercomponent entanglement. Here, we point out the importance of introducing renormalized coupling constants for coarse-grained densities. We show that the low-energy excitation spectra for the two kindsof fields are related to each other by suitable rescaling using the renormalized constants. By calculating the entanglement entropy, we find that for an intercomponent repulsion (attraction), the two components are more strongly entangled in the case of parallel (antiparallel) fields, in qualitative agreement with recent studies for a quantum (spin) Hall regime. We also find that the entanglement spectrum exhibits an anomalous square-root dispersion relation, which leads to a subleading logarithmic term in the entanglement entropy. All of these are confirmed by numerical calculations based on the Bogoliubov theory with the lowest-Landau-level approximation. Finally, we investigate the effects of quantum fluctuations on the phase diagrams by calculating the correction to the ground-state energy due to zero-point fluctuations in the Bogoliubov theory. We find that the boundaries between rhombic-, square-, and rectangular-lattice phases shift appreciably with a decrease in the filling factor.

Symmetry-protected topological phases and competing orders in a spin-1/2 XXZ ladder with a four-spin interaction

We study a spin-1/2 XXZ model with a four-spin interaction on a two-leg ladder. By means of effective field theory and matrix product state calculations, we obtain rich ground-state phase diagrams that consist of eight distinct gapped phases. Four of them exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking with either a magnetic or valence-bond-solid (VBS) long-range order. The other four are featureless, i.e., the bulk ground state is unique and does not break any symmetry. The featureless phases include the rung singlet (RS) and Haldane phases as well as their variants, the RS* and Haldane* phases, in which twisted singlet pairs are formed between the two legs. We argue and demonstrate that Gaussian transitions with the central charge c=1 occur between the featureless phases and between the ordered phases while Ising transitions with c=1/2 occur between the featureless and ordered phases. The two types of transition lines cross at the SU(2)-symmetric point, where the criticality is described by the SU(2)_2 Wess-Zumino-Witten theory with c=3/2. The RS-Haldane* and RS*-Haldane transitions give examples of topological phase transitions. Interestingly, the RS* and Haldane* phases, which have highly anisotropic nature, appear even in the vicinity of the isotropic case. We demonstrate that all the four featureless phases are distinguished by topological indices in the presence of certain symmetries.

Intercomponent entanglement entropy and spectrum in binary Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the entanglement entropy and spectrum between components in binary Bose-Einstein condensates in $d$ spatial dimensions. We employ effective field theory to show that the entanglement spectrum exhibits an anomalous square-root dispersion relation in the presence of an intercomponent tunneling (a Rabi coupling) and a gapped dispersion relation in its absence. These spectral features are associated with the emergence of long-range interactions in terms of the superfluid velocity and the particle density in the entanglement Hamiltonian. Our results demonstrate that unusual long-range interactions can be emulated in a subsystem of multicomponent BECs that have only short-range interactions. We also find that for a finite Rabi coupling the entanglement entropy exhibits a volume-law scaling with subleading logarithmic corrections originating from the Nambu-Goldstone mode and the symmetry restoration for a finite volume.

Continuous Phase Transition without Gap Closing in Non-Hermitian Quantum Many-Body Systems

Contrary to the conventional wisdom in Hermitian systems, a continuous quantum phase transition between gapped phases is shown to occur without closing the energy gap $Δ$ in non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems. Here, the relevant length scale $ξ\simeq v_{\rm LR}/Δ$ diverges because of the breakdown of the Lieb-Robinson bound on the velocity (i.e., unboundedness of $v_{\rm LR}$) rather than vanishing of the energy gap $Δ$. The susceptibility to a change in the system parameter exhibits a singularity due to nonorthogonality of eigenstates. As an illustrative example, we present an exactly solvable model by generalizing Kitaev's toric-code model to a non-Hermitian regime.

Continuous phase transition between Neel and valence bond solid phases in a J-Q-like spin ladder system

We investigate a quantum phase transition between a Neel phase and a valence bond solid (VBS) phase, in each of which a different Z2 symmetry is broken, in a spin-1/2 two-leg XXZ ladder with a four-spin interaction. The model can be viewed as a one-dimensional variant of the celebrated J-Q model on a square lattice. By means of variational uniform matrix product state calculations and an effective field theory, we determine the phase diagram of the model, and present evidences that the Neel-VBS transition is continuous and belongs to the Gaussian universality class with the central charge c=1. In particular, the critical exponents $β, η,$ and, $ν$ are found to satisfy the constraints expected for a Gaussian transition within numerical accuracy. These exponents do not detectably change along the phase boundary while they are in general allowed to do so for the Gaussian class.

Effects of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in volborthite: Magnetic orders and thermal Hall effect

Volborthite offers an interesting example of a highly frustrated quantum magnet in which ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions compete on anisotropic kagome lattices. A recent density functional theory calculation has provided a magnetic model based on coupled trimers, which is consistent with a broad 1/3-magnetization plateau observed experimentally. Here we study the effects of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions in volborthite. We derive an effective model in which pseudospin-1/2 moments emerging on trimers form a network of an anisotropic triangular lattice. Using the effective model, we show that for a magnetic field perpendicular to the kagome layer, magnon excitations from the 1/3-plateau feel a Berry curvature due to the DM interactions, giving rise to a thermal Hall effect. Our magnon Bose gas theory can explain qualitative features of the magnetization and the thermal Hall conductivity measured experimentally. A further quantitative comparison with experiment poses constraints on the coupling constants in the effective model, promoting a quasi-one-dimensional picture. Based on this picture, we analyze low-temperature magnetic phase diagrams using effective field theory, and point out their crucial dependence on the field direction.

Magnetoelastic couplings in the deformed Kagomé quantum spin lattice of volborthite

Microscopic spin interactions on a deformed Kagomé lattice of volborthite are investigated through magnetoelastic couplings. A negative longitudinal magnetostriction $ΔL<0$ in the $b$ axis is observed, which depends on the magnetization $M$ with a peculiar relation of $ΔL/L \propto M^{1.3}$. Based on the exchange striction model, it is argued that the negative magnetostriction originates from a pantograph-like lattice change of the Cu-O-Cu chain in the $b$ axis, and that the peculiar dependence arises from the local spin correlation. This idea is supported by DFT+$U$ calculations simulating the lattice change and a finite-size calculation of the spin correlation, indicating that the recently proposed coupled-trimer model is a plausible one.

Collective modes of vortex lattices in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates under synthetic gauge fields

We study collective modes of vortex lattices in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates subject to synthetic magnetic fields in mutually parallel or antiparallel directions. By means of the Bogoliubov theory with the lowest-Landau-level approximation, we numerically calculate the excitation spectra for a rich variety of vortex lattices that appear commonly for parallel and antiparallel synthetic fields. We find that in all of these cases, there appear two distinct modes with linear and quadratic dispersion relations at low energies, which exhibit anisotropy reflecting the symmetry of each lattice structure. Remarkably, the low-energy spectra for the two types of fields are found to be related to each other by simple rescaling when vortices in different components overlap owing to an intercomponent attraction. These results are consistent with an effective field theory analysis. However, the rescaling relations break down for interlaced vortex lattices appearing with an intercomponent repulsion, indicating a nontrivial effect of an intercomponent vortex displacement beyond the effective field theory. We also find that high-energy parts of the excitation bands exhibit line or point nodes as a consequence of a fractional translation symmetry present in some of the lattice structures.

Quantum Hall phase diagram of two-component Bose gases: Intercomponent entanglement and pseudopotentials

We study the ground-state phase diagram of two-dimensional two-component (or pseudospin-1/2) Bose gases in a high synthetic magnetic field in the space of the total filling factor and the ratio of the intercomponent coupling $g_{\uparrow\downarrow}$ to the intracomponent one $g>0$. Using exact diagonalization, we find that when the intercomponent coupling is attractive ($g_{\uparrow\downarrow}<0$), the product states of a pair of nearly uncorrelated quantum Hall states are remarkably robust and persist even when $|g_{\uparrow\downarrow}|$ is close to $g$. This contrasts with the case of an intercomponent repulsion, where a variety of spin-singlet quantum Hall states with high intercomponent entanglement emerge for $g_{\uparrow\downarrow}\approx g$. We interpret this marked dependence on the sign of $g_{\uparrow\downarrow}$ in light of pseudopotentials on a sphere, and also explain recent numerical results in two-component Bose gases in mutually antiparallel magnetic fields where a qualitatively opposite dependence on the sign of $g_{\uparrow\downarrow}$ is found. Our results thus unveil an intriguing connection between multicomponent quantum Hall systems and quantum spin Hall systems in minimal setups.

Capacity of entanglement and distribution of density matrix eigenvalues in gapless systems

We propose that the properties of the capacity of entanglement (COE) in gapless systems can efficiently be investigated through the use of the distribution of eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix (RDM). The COE is defined as the fictitious heat capacity calculated from the entanglement spectrum. Its dependence on the fictitious temperature can reflect the low-temperature behavior of the physical heat capacity, and thus provide a useful probe of gapless bulk or edge excitations of the system. Assuming a power-law scaling of the COE with an exponent $α$ at low fictitious temperatures, we derive an analytical formula for the distribution function of the RDM eigenvalues. We numerically test the effectiveness of the formula in relativistic free scalar boson in two spatial dimensions, and find that the distribution function can detect the expected $α=3$ scaling of the COE much more efficiently than the raw data of the COE. We also calculate the distribution function in the ground state of the half-filled Landau level with short-range interactions, and find a better agreement with the $α=2/3$ formula than with the $α=1$ one, which indicates a non-Fermi-liquid nature of the system.

Parity-time-symmetric quantum critical phenomena

Synthetic nonconservative systems with parity-time (PT) symmetric gain-loss structures can exhibit unusual spontaneous symmetry breaking that accompanies spectral singularity. Recent studies on PT symmetry in optics and weakly interacting open quantum systems have revealed intriguing physical properties, yet many-body correlations still play no role. Here by extending the idea of PT symmetry to strongly correlated many-body systems, we report that a combination of spectral singularity and quantum criticality yields an exotic universality class which has no counterpart in known critical phenomena. Moreover, we find unconventional low-dimensional quantum criticality, where superfluid correlation is anomalously enhanced owing to non-monotonic renormalization group flows in a PT-symmetry-broken quantum critical phase, in stark contrast to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless paradigm. Our findings can be experimentally tested in ultracold atoms and predict critical phenomena beyond the Hermitian paradigm of quantum many-body physics.

Bosonic integer quantum Hall effect as topological pumping

Based on a quasi-one-dimensional limit of quantum Hall states on a thin torus, we construct a model of interaction-induced topological pumping which mimics the Hall response of the bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) state. The quasi-one-dimensional counterpart of the BIQH state is identified as the Haldane phase composed of two-component bosons which form effective spin-$1$ degrees of freedom. An adiabatic change between the Haldane phase and trivial Mott insulators constitute {\it off-diagonal} topological pumping in which the translation of the lattice potential for one component induces a current in the other. The mechanism of this pumping is interpreted in terms of changes in polarizations between symmetry-protected quantized values.

Devil's staircases in synthetic dimensions and gauge fields

We study interacting bosonic or fermionic atoms in a high synthetic magnetic field in two dimensions spanned by continuous real space and a synthetic dimension. Here, the synthetic dimension is provided by hyperfine spin states, and the synthetic field is created by laser-induced transitions between them. While the interaction is short-range in real space, it is long-range in the synthetic dimension in sharp contrast with fractional quantum Hall systems. Introducing an analog of the lowest-Landau-level approximation valid for large transition amplitudes, we derive an effective one-dimensional lattice model, in which density-density interactions turn out to play a dominant role. We show that in the limit of a large number of internal states, the system exhibits a cascade of crystal ground states, which is known as devil's staircase, in a way analogous to the thin-torus limit of quantum Hall systems.

Quantum critical behavior influenced by measurement backaction in ultracold gases

Recent realizations of quantum gas microscope offer the possibility of continuous monitoring of the dynamics of a quantum many-body system at the single-particle level. By analyzing effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians of interacting bosons in an optical lattice and continuum, we demonstrate that the backaction of quantum measurement shifts the quantum critical point and gives rise to a unique critical phase beyond the terrain of the standard universality class. We perform mean-field and strong-coupling-expansion analyses and show that non-Hermitian contributions shift the superfluid--to-Mott-insulator transition point. Using a low-energy effective field theory, we discuss critical behavior of the one-dimensional interacting Bose gas subject to the measurement backaction. We derive an exact ground state of the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and find a unique critical behavior beyond the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid universality class. We propose experimental implementations of post-selections using quantum gas microscopes to simulate the non-Hermitian dynamics and argue that our results can be investigated with current experimental techniques in ultracold atoms.
