Correction of broadband terahertz electro-optic sampling with GaSe crystals

Gallium selenide (GaSe) is an efficient nonlinear crystal for electro-optic (EO) sampling in the multi-terahertz (THz) frequency range. However, the lattice resonance at several THz frequencies hampers broadband EO sampling, resulting in distorted pulse waveforms. In this work, we experimentally evaluated the frequency-dependent response function in EO sampling, considering the effects of phonons, phase mismatch, and gate pulse waveforms. The phonon effect is described using an effective Faust-Henry coefficient, which was determined to be $-0.21 \pm 0.02$. The corrected field amplitude of multi-THz pulses aligns with additional measurements of average power and a beam diameter. The successful compensation of the frequency characteristics in GaSe will contribute to a more accurate evaluation of multi-THz transients.

Precipitation induced filament pattern of injected fluid controlled by structured cell

Mixing of two fluids can lead to the formation of a precipitate. If one of the fluids is injected into a confined space filled with the other, a created precipitate disrupts the flow locally and forms complex spatiotemporal patterns. The relevance of controlling these patterns has been highlighted in the engineering and geological contexts. Here, we show that such injection patterns can be controlled consistently by injection rate and obstacles. Our experimental results revealed filament patterns for high injection and low reaction rates, and the injection rate can control the number of active filaments. Furthermore, appropriately spaced obstacles in the cells can straighten the motion of the advancing tip of the filament. A mathematical model based on a moving boundary adopting the effect of precipitation reproduced the phase diagram and the straight motion of filaments in structured cells. Our study clarifies the impact of the nonlinear permeability response on the precipitate density and that of the obstacles in the surrounding medium on the motion of the injected fluid with precipitation.

A Study on the relationship between the geometrical shapes and the biometrical acoustic characteristics of human ear canal

Ear acoustic authentication is a new biometrics method and it utilizes the differences in acoustic characteristics of the ear canal between users. However, there have been few reports on the factors that cause differences in the acoustic characteristics. We investigate the relationship between ear canal shapes and acoustic characteristics in terms of user-to-user similarity. We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure ear canal geometry. As a result, the correlation coefficient between shape similarity and acoustic characteristic similarity is higher than 0.7 and the coefficient of determination is higher than 0.5. This suggests that the difference in the shape of the ear canal is one of the important factors.

On sections of hyperelliptic Lefschetz fibrations

We construct a relation among right-handed Dehn twists in the mapping class group of a compact oriented surface of genus g with 4g+4 boundary components. This relation gives an explicit topological description of 4g+4 disjoint (-1)-sections of a hyperelliptic Lefschetz fibration of genus g on the manifold {CP}^2#(4g+5){-CP}^2.
