Probabilistic Nearest Neighbor Estimation of Diffusion Constants from Single Molecular Measurement without Explicit Tracking

Time course measurement of single molecules on a cell surface provides detailed information on the dynamics of the molecules, which is otherwise inaccessible. To extract the quantitative information, single particle tracking (SPT) is typically performed. However, trajectories extracted by SPT inevitably have linking errors when the diffusion speed of single molecules is high compared to the scale of the particle density. To circumvent this problem we developed an algorithm to estimate diffusion constants without relying on SPT. We demonstrated that the proposed algorithm provides reasonable estimation of diffusion constants even when other methods fail due to high particle density or inhomogeneous particle distribution. In addition, our algorithm can be used for visualization of time course data from single molecular measurements.

On open-closed extension of boundary string field theory

We investigate a classical open-closed string field theory whose open string sector is given by boundary string field theory. The open-closed interaction is introduced by the overlap of a boundary state with a closed string field. With the help of the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism, the closed string sector is determined to be the HIKKO closed string field theory. We also discuss the gauge invariance of this theory in both open and closed string sides.

Heterotic E6 GUTs and Partition Functions

The E6 grand unified theory is an attractive candidate intermediate theory between the standard model and string theory. However, only one E6 grand unified model with three generations and at least one adjoint Higgs field has been derived from string theory in the literature, and this model is phenomenologically unsatisfactory. Recently, in arXiv:1012.1690, we have constructed two new such E6 grand unified models in heterotic asymmetric orbifolds. Although our new models themselves cannot resolve the unsatisfactory point in the previous model, our discovery raises hopes that one can construct many other such models in this framework and find better models. Here, by giving partition functions explicitly, we explain the details of our construction. Utilizing the lattice engineering technique and the diagonal embedding method, we can construct models systematically. We hope that these techniques and the details of our construction will lead to more phenomenologically desirable models.

Stochastic Binary Modeling of Cells in Continuous Time as an Alternative to Biochemical Reaction Equations

We have developed a coarse-grained formulation for modeling the dynamic behavior of cells quantitatively, based on stochasticity and heterogeneity, rather than on biochemical reactions. We treat each reaction as a continuous-time stochastic process, while reducing each biochemical quantity to a binary value at the level of individual cells. The system can be analytically represented by a finite set of ordinary linear differential equations, which provides a continuous time course prediction of each molecular state. In this letter, we introduce our formalism and demonstrate it with several examples.

E6 grand unified theory with three generations from heterotic string

We construct two more supersymmetric E6 grand unified models with three generations within the framework of Z12 asymmetric orbifold compactification of the heterotic string theory. Such an asymmetric orbifold is missing in the classification in the literature, which concludes that only one E6 model is possible. In both of the new models, an adjoint Higgs field is obtained in virtue of the diagonal embedding method. This method mods out the three E6 factors of an even self-dual momentum-lattice by a permutation symmetry. In order to realize the E6^3 even self-dual lattice, we utilize the lattice engineering technique. Among the eight possible orbifold actions in our setup, two lead to new E6 models. Though these models still share the unsatisfactory issues with the known one, our discovery raises hopes that excellent models that solve all the problems in the supersymmetric grand unified models will be found in this framework.

On the general action of boundary (super)string field theory

We reconstruct boundary superstring field theory via boundary states. After a minor modification of the fermionic two-form, all the equations needed for Batalin-Vilkovisky formulation are simply represented by closed string oscillators and the proof of gauge invariance is drastically simplified. The general form of the action of boundary superstring field theory is also obtained without any assumption and found to take exactly the same form as the bosonic one. As a special case of this action, we revisit the conjecture that the action is simply given by the disk partition function when matter and ghosts are completely decoupled.

Drag Force, Jet Quenching, and AdS/QCD

In this note, two important transport observables in the RHIC experiment, relaxation time constant and jet quenching parameter, are calculated from an AdS/QCD model. A quark moving in the viscous medium such as the Quark-Gluon-Plasma is modelled by an open string whose end point travels on the boundary of a deformed AdS_5 black hole. The correction introduced via the deformed AdS_5 is believed to help us better understand the data which is expected to be measured in the RHIC.

Twist Field as Three String Interaction Vertex in Light Cone String Field Theory

It has been suggested that matrix string theory and light-cone string field theory are closely related. In this paper, we investigate the relation between the twist field, which represents string interactions in matrix string theory, and the three-string interaction vertex in light-cone string field theory carefully. We find that the three-string interaction vertex can reproduce some of the most important OPEs satisfied by the twist field.

Reformulation of Boundary String Field Theory in terms of Boundary State

We reformulate bosonic boundary string field theory in terms of boundary state. In our formulation, we can formally perform the integration of target space equations of motion for arbitrary field configurations without assuming decoupling of matter and ghost. Thus, we obtain the general form of the action of bosonic boundary string field theory. This formulation may help us to understand possible interactions between boundary string field theory and the closed string sector.

High-energy zero-norm states and symmetries of string theory

High-energy limit of zero-norm states (HZNS) in the old covariant first quantized (OCFQ) spectrum of the 26D open bosonic string, together with the assumption of a smooth behavior of string theory in this limit, are used to derive infinitely many linear relations among the leading high-energy, fixed angle behavior of four point functions of different string states. As a result, ratios among all high-energy scattering amplitudes of four arbitrary string states can be calculated algebraically and the leading order amplitudes can be expressed in terms of that of four tachyons as conjectured by Gross in 1988. A dual calculation can also be performed and equivalent results are obtained by taking the high-energy limit of Virasoro constraints. Finally, as a consistent sample calculation, we compute all high-energy scattering amplitudes of three tachyons and one massive state at the leading order by saddle-point approximation to justify our results.

Zero-norm states and stringy symmetries

We identify spacetime symmetry charges of 26D open bosonic string theory from an infinite number of zero-norm states (ZNS) with arbitrary high spin in the old covariant first quantized string spectrum. We give various evidences to support this identification. These include massive sigma-model calculation, Witten string field theory calculation, 2D string theory calculation and, most importantly, three methods of high-energy stringy scattering amplitude calculations. The last calculations explicitly prove Gross's conjectures in 1988 on high energy symmetry of string theory.

Comments on the high energy limit of bosonic open string theory

In previous works, ratios among four-point scattering amplitudes at the leading order in the high-energy limit were derived for the bosonic open string theory. The derivation was based on Ward identities derived from the decoupling of zero-norm states and was purely algebraic. The only assumption of the derivation was that the momentum polarization can be approximated by the longitudinal polarization at high energies. In this paper, using the decoupling of spurious states, we reduce this assumption to a much weaker one which can be easily verified by simple power counting in most cases. For the special cases which are less obvious, we verify the new assumption for an example by saddle-point approximation. We also provide a new perspective to our previous results in terms of DDF states. In particular, we show that, by using DDF states, one can easily see that there is only one independent high energy scattering amplitude for each fixed mass level.

Solving all 4-point correlation functions for bosonic open string theory in the high energy limit

We study the implication of decoupling zero-norm states in the high-energy limit, for the 26 dimensional bosonic open string theory. Infinitely many linear relations among 4-point functions are derived algebraically, and their unique solution is found. Equivalent results are also obtained by taking the high-energy limit of Virasoro constraints, and as an independent check, we compute all 4-point functions of 3 tachyons and an arbitrary massive state by saddle-point approximation.

Exact Results on Twist Anomaly

In vacuum string field theory, the sliver state solution has been proposed as a candidate of a D-brane configuration. Physical observables associated with this solution, such as its energy density and the tachyon mass, are written in terms of the Neumann coefficients. These observables, though vanish naively due to twist symmetry, acquire non-vanishing values arising from their singular behavior. Therefore, this phenomenon is called twist anomaly. In this paper we present an analytical derivation of these physical observables with the help of the star algebra spectroscopy. We also identify in our derivation the origin of the twist anomaly in the finite-size matrix regularization.

Test of the Absence of Kinetic Terms around the Tachyon Vacuum in Cubic String Field Theory

It has been conjectured that the bosonic open string theory around the non-perturbative tachyon vacuum has no open string dynamics at all. We explore, in the cubic open string field theory with level truncation approximation, the possibility that this conjecture is realized by the absence of kinetic terms of the string field fluctuations. We study the kinetic terms with two and four derivatives for the lower level scalar modes as well as their BRST transformation properties. The behavior of the coefficients of the kinetic terms in the neighborhood of the non-perturbative vacuum supports our expectation that the BRST invariant scalar component lacks its kinetic term.
