Principled Steering via Null-space Projection for Jailbreak Defense in Vision-Language Models

As vision-language models (VLMs) are increasingly deployed in open-world scenarios, they can be easily induced by visual jailbreak attacks to generate harmful content, posing serious risks to model safety and trustworthy usage. Recent activation steering methods inject directional vectors into model activations during inference to induce refusal behaviors and have demonstrated effectiveness. However, a steering vector may both enhance refusal ability and cause over-refusal, thereby degrading model performance on benign inputs. Moreover, due to the lack of theoretical interpretability, these methods still suffer from limited robustness and effectiveness. To better balance safety and utility, we propose NullSteer, a null-space projected activation defense framework. Our method constructs refusal directions within model activations through a linear transformation: it maintains zero perturbation within the benign subspace while dynamically inducing refusal along potentially harmful directions, thereby theoretically achieving safety enhancement without impairing the model's general capabilities. Extensive experiments show that NullSteer significantly reduces harmful outputs under various jailbreak attacks (average ASR reduction over 15 percent on MiniGPT-4) while maintaining comparable performance to the original model on general benchmarks.

CurvZO: Adaptive Curvature-Guided Sparse Zeroth-Order Optimization for Efficient LLM Fine-Tuning

Fine-tuning large language models (LLMs) with backpropagation achieves high performance but incurs substantial memory overhead, limiting scalability on resource-constrained hardware. Zeroth-order (ZO) optimization provides a memory-efficient alternative by relying solely on forward passes, yet it typically suffers from slow or unstable convergence due to high-variance gradient estimates. Sparse ZO updates partially address this issue by perturbing only a subset of parameters, but their effectiveness hinges on selecting informative parameters, which is challenging in ZO optimization because each query yields only scalar feedback. We propose \textbf{Adaptive Curvature-Guided Sparse Zeroth-Order Optimization (CurvZO)}, which tracks curvature signals online from scalar ZO feedback and leverages these signals to construct a parameter-wise sampling distribution for selecting coordinates at each update, reducing the variance of the sparse ZO gradient estimator. Moreover, CurvZO dynamically adapts the perturbation budget to the evolving curvature signal distribution, yielding sparse ZO updates that remain both focused and sufficiently exploratory. Extensive experiments on OPT and Llama across diverse NLP tasks show that CurvZO consistently improves fine-tuning performance and reduces training time over ZO baselines. It improves accuracy by up to 4.4 points and achieves up to a $2\times$ speedup, while preserving memory efficiency.

Signatures of spin-polarized p-wave superconductivity in the kagome material RbV$_3$Sb$_5$

The study of kagome materials has attracted much attention in the past few years due to the presence of many electron-electron interaction-driven phases in a single material. These include charge density waves, nematic phases, superconducting phases, and pair density waves. In this work, we report the discovery of intrinsic spin-polarized p-wave superconductivity in the thin-flake kagome material RbV$_3$Sb$_5$. Firstly, when an in-plane magnetic field is swept in opposite directions, we observe a unique form of hysteresis in magnetoresistance which is different from the hysteresis induced by extrinsic mechanisms such as flux-trapping or superheating and supercooling effects. The unconventional hysteresis indicates the emergence of an intrinsic time-reversal symmetry-breaking superconducting phase. Strikingly, at a fixed magnetic field, the finite-resistance state can be transitioned into the superconducting state by applying and subsequently removing a large current. Secondly, at temperatures around 400 mK, the re-entrance of superconductivity occurs during an in-plane field-sweeping process. This kind of re-entrance is asymmetric about the zero field axis and observed in all field directions for a fixed current direction, which is different from the re-entrance observed in conventional superconductors. These findings put very strong constraints on the possible superconducting pairing symmetry of RbV$_3$Sb$_5$. We point out that the pairing symmetry, which is consistent with the crystal symmetry and all the observed novel properties, is possibly a time-reversal symmetry-breaking, p-wave pairing with net spin polarization. Importantly, this p-wave pairing gives rise to a nodal topological superconducting state with Majorana flat bands on the sample edges.

Widefield Nanodiamond Quantum Sensing Based on Light-Sheet Microscopy

Nanodiamonds containing nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers are promising quantum sensors for biological applications thanks to their sub-micron spatial resolution, biocompatibility, and versatile multi-modal responses. However, the optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) measurement requires laser irradiation, creating a trade-off between high-throughput and low phototoxicity for applications in live cells. Here to address this challenge we develop a widefield quantum sensing method based on light-sheet microscopy (LSM), in which the sample is illuminated by a vertically movable laser sheet and the fluorescence is collected along the vertical axis that is orthogonal to the light sheet. This LSM-ODMR system is demonstrated to feature high throughput sensing due to the wide-field configuration, fast three-dimensional imaging and sensing due to the vertical mobility of the light sheet, enhanced sensitivity due to suppression of out-of-focus background fluorescence, and low phototoxicity for bio-sensing due to elimination of out-of-focus illumination. This LSM-based widefield nanodiamond sensing provides an approach for biological studies with low phototoxicity, offering three-dimensional and multi-modal sensing capability.

Cheers: Decoupling Patch Details from Semantic Representations Enables Unified Multimodal Comprehension and Generation

A recent cutting-edge topic in multimodal modeling is to unify visual comprehension and generation within a single model. However, the two tasks demand mismatched decoding regimes and visual representations, making it non-trivial to jointly optimize within a shared feature space. In this work, we present Cheers, a unified multimodal model that decouples patch-level details from semantic representations, thereby stabilizing semantics for multimodal understanding and improving fidelity for image generation via gated detail residuals. Cheers includes three key components: (i) a unified vision tokenizer that encodes and compresses image latent states into semantic tokens for efficient LLM conditioning, (ii) an LLM-based Transformer that unifies autoregressive decoding for text generation and diffusion decoding for image generation, and (iii) a cascaded flow matching head that decodes visual semantics first and then injects semantically gated detail residuals from the vision tokenizer to refine high-frequency content. Experiments on popular benchmarks demonstrate that Cheers matches or surpasses advanced UMMs in both visual understanding and generation. Cheers also achieves 4x token compression, enabling more efficient high-resolution image encoding and generation. Notably, Cheers outperforms the Tar-1.5B on the popular benchmarks GenEval and MMBench, while requiring only 20% of the training cost, indicating effective and efficient (i.e., 4x token compression) unified multimodal modeling. We will release all code and data for future research.

FG-CLTP: Fine-Grained Contrastive Language Tactile Pretraining for Robotic Manipulation

Recent advancements in integrating tactile sensing into vision-language-action (VLA) models have demonstrated transformative potential for robotic perception. However, existing tactile representations predominantly rely on qualitative descriptors (e.g., texture), neglecting quantitative contact states such as force magnitude, contact geometry, and principal axis orientation, which are indispensable for fine-grained manipulation. To bridge this gap, we propose FG-CLTP, a fine-grained contrastive language tactile pretraining framework. We first introduce a novel dataset comprising over 100k tactile 3D point cloud-language pairs that explicitly capture multidimensional contact states from the sensor's perspective. We then implement a discretized numerical tokenization mechanism to achieve quantitative-semantic alignment, effectively injecting explicit physical metrics into the multimodal feature space. The proposed FG-CLTP model yields a 95.9% classification accuracy and reduces the regression error (MAE) by 52.6% compared to state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, the integration of 3D point cloud representations establishes a sensor-agnostic foundation with a minimal sim-to-real gap of 3.5%. Building upon this fine-grained representation, we develop a 3D tactile-language-action (3D-TLA) architecture driven by a flow matching policy to enable multimodal reasoning and control. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework significantly outperforms strong baselines in contact-rich manipulation tasks, providing a robust and generalizable foundation for tactile-language-action models.

TIMotion: Temporal and Interactive Framework for Efficient Human-Human Motion Generation

Human-human motion generation is essential for understanding humans as social beings. Current methods fall into two main categories: single-person-based methods and separate modeling-based methods. To delve into this field, we abstract the overall generation process into a general framework MetaMotion, which consists of two phases: temporal modeling and interaction mixing. For temporal modeling, the single-person-based methods concatenate two people into a single one directly, while the separate modeling-based methods skip the modeling of interaction sequences. The inadequate modeling described above resulted in sub-optimal performance and redundant model parameters. In this paper, we introduce TIMotion (Temporal and Interactive Modeling), an efficient and effective framework for human-human motion generation. Specifically, we first propose Causal Interactive Injection to model two separate sequences as a causal sequence leveraging the temporal and causal properties. Then we present Role-Evolving Scanning to adjust to the change in the active and passive roles throughout the interaction. Finally, to generate smoother and more rational motion, we design Localized Pattern Amplification to capture short-term motion patterns. Extensive experiments on InterHuman and InterX demonstrate that our method achieves superior performance. Project page: https://aigc-explorer.github.io/TIMotion-page/

Beyond Endpoints: Path-Centric Reasoning for Vectorized Off-Road Network Extraction

Deep learning has advanced vectorized road extraction in urban settings, yet off-road environments remain underexplored and challenging. A significant domain gap causes advanced models to fail in wild terrains due to two key issues: lack of large-scale vectorized datasets and structural weakness in prevailing methods. Models such as SAM-Road employ a node-centric paradigm that reasons at sparse endpoints, making them fragile to occlusions and ambiguous junctions in off-road scenes, leading to topological errors. This work addresses these limitations in two complementary ways. First, we release WildRoad, a global off-road road network dataset constructed efficiently with a dedicated interactive annotation tool tailored for road-network labeling. Second, we introduce MaGRoad (Mask-aware Geodesic Road network extractor), a path-centric framework that aggregates multi-scale visual evidence along candidate paths to infer connectivity robustly. Extensive experiments show that MaGRoad achieves state-of-the-art performance on our challenging WildRoad benchmark while generalizing well to urban datasets. An efficient vertex extraction strategy also yields roughly 2.5X faster inference, improving practical applicability. Together, the dataset and path-centric paradigm provide a stronger foundation for mapping roads in the wild. We release both the dataset and code at this repository. We release both the dataset and code at https://github.com/xiaofei-guan/MaGRoad.

Topological Anderson insulators by latent symmetry

Topological Anderson insulators represent a class of disorder-induced, nontrivial topological states of matter. In this study, we propose a feasible strategy to unveil and design topological Anderson insulators protected by latent symmetries. These are not visible in the original system, but become obvious after performing an isospectral reduction. Using this technique, we design a family of disordered multi-atomic chains that exhibit latent chiral symmetry or mirror (inversion) symmetry. Using topological invariants, bulk polarization, and the divergence of localization length of the topological bound edge states in the reduced disordered system, we show how to identify the gapped and ungapped topological Anderson states in the original systems. Our work thus extends the concept of topological Anderson insulating phases protected by geometric symmetries and tenfold-way classification to the various types of latent symmetry cases. Overall, our work paves the way for exploiting topological Anderson insulators in terms of latent symmetries.

MiniCPM-SALA: Hybridizing Sparse and Linear Attention for Efficient Long-Context Modeling

The evolution of large language models (LLMs) towards applications with ultra-long contexts faces challenges posed by the high computational and memory costs of the Transformer architecture. While existing sparse and linear attention mechanisms attempt to mitigate these issues, they typically involve a trade-off between memory efficiency and model performance. This paper introduces MiniCPM-SALA, a 9B-parameter hybrid architecture that integrates the high-fidelity long-context modeling of sparse attention (InfLLM-V2) with the global efficiency of linear attention (Lightning Attention). By employing a layer selection algorithm to integrate these mechanisms in a 1:3 ratio and utilizing a hybrid positional encoding (HyPE), the model maintains efficiency and performance for long-context tasks. Furthermore, we introduce a cost-effective continual training framework that transforms pre-trained Transformer-based models into hybrid models, which reduces training costs by approximately 75% compared to training from scratch. Extensive experiments show that MiniCPM-SALA maintains general capabilities comparable to full-attention models while offering improved efficiency. On a single NVIDIA A6000D GPU, the model achieves up to 3.5x the inference speed of the full-attention model at the sequence length of 256K tokens and supports context lengths of up to 1M tokens, a scale where traditional full-attention 8B models fail because of memory constraints.

SpikingTac: A Miniaturized Neuromorphic Visuotactile Sensor for High-Precision Dynamic Tactile Imprint Tracking

High-speed event-driven tactile sensors are essential for achieving human-like dynamic manipulation, yet their integration is often limited by the bulkiness of standard event cameras. This paper presents SpikingTac, a miniaturized, highly integrated neuromorphic tactile sensor featuring a custom standalone event camera module, achieved with a total material cost of less than \$150. We construct a global dynamic state map coupled with an unsupervised denoising network to enable precise tracking at a 1000~Hz perception rate and 350~Hz tracking frequency. Addressing the viscoelastic hysteresis of silicone elastomers, we propose a hysteresis-aware incremental update law with a spatial gain damping mechanism. Experimental results demonstrate exceptional zero-point stability, achieving a 100\% return-to-origin success rate with a minimal mean bias of 0.8039 pixels, even under extreme torsional deformations. In dynamic tasks, SpikingTac limits the obstacle-avoidance overshoot to 6.2~mm, representing a 5-fold performance improvement over conventional frame-based sensors. Furthermore, the sensor achieves sub-millimeter geometric accuracy, with Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.0952~mm in localization and 0.0452~mm in radius measurement.

GuardAlign: Test-time Safety Alignment in Multimodal Large Language Models

Large vision-language models (LVLMs) have achieved remarkable progress in vision-language reasoning tasks, yet ensuring their safety remains a critical challenge. Recent input-side defenses detect unsafe images with CLIP and prepend safety prefixes to prompts, but they still suffer from inaccurate detection in complex scenes and unstable safety signals during decoding. To address these issues, we propose GuardAlign, a training-free defense framework that integrates two strategies. First, OT-enhanced safety detection leverages optimal transport to measure distribution distances between image patches and unsafe semantics, enabling accurate identification of malicious regions without additional computational cost. Second, cross-modal attentive calibration strengthens the influence of safety prefixes by adaptively reallocating attention across layers, ensuring that safety signals remain consistently activated throughout generation. Extensive evaluations on six representative MLLMs demonstrate that GuardAlign reduces unsafe response rates by up to 39% on SPA-VL, while preserving utility, achieving an improvement on VQAv2 from 78.51% to 79.21%.

Look Carefully: Adaptive Visual Reinforcements in Multimodal Large Language Models for Hallucination Mitigation

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have achieved remarkable progress in vision-language reasoning, yet they remain vulnerable to hallucination, where generated content deviates from visual evidence. Existing mitigation strategies either require costly supervision during training or introduce additional latency at inference time. Recent vision enhancement methods attempt to address this issue by reinforcing visual tokens during decoding, but they typically inject all tokens indiscriminately, which causes interference from background regions and distracts the model from critical cues. To overcome this challenge, we propose Adaptive Visual Reinforcement (AIR), a training-free framework for MLLMs. AIR consists of two components. Prototype-based token reduction condenses the large pool of visual tokens into a compact subset to suppress redundancy. OT-guided patch reinforcement quantifies the alignment between hidden states and patch embeddings to selectively integrate the most consistent patches into feed-forward layers. As a result, AIR enhances the model's reliance on salient visual information and effectively mitigates hallucination. Extensive experiments across representative MLLMs demonstrate that AIR substantially reduces hallucination while preserving general capabilities, establishing it as an effective solution for building reliable MLLMs.

Minimal Cascade Gradient Smoothing for Fast Transferable Preemptive Adversarial Defense

Adversarial attacks persist as a major challenge in deep learning. While training- and test-time defenses are well-studied, they often reduce clean accuracy, incur high cost, or fail under adaptive threats. In contrast, preemptive defenses, which perturb media before release, offer a practical alternative but remain slow, model-coupled, and brittle. We propose the Minimal Sufficient Preemptive Defense (MSPD), a fast, transferable framework that defends against future attacks without access to the target model or gradients. MSPD is driven by Minimal Cascade Gradient Smoothing (MCGS), a two-epoch optimization paradigm executed on a surrogate backbone. This defines a minimal yet effective regime for robust generalization across unseen models and attacks. MSPD runs at 0.02s/image (CIFAR-10) and 0.26s/image (ImageNet), 28--1696 times faster than prior preemptive methods, while improving robust accuracy by +5% and clean accuracy by +3.7% across 11 models and 7 attacks. To evaluate adaptive robustness, we introduce Preemptive Reversion, the first white-box diagnostic attack that cancels preemptive perturbations under full gradient access. Even in this setting, MSPD retains a +2.2% robustness margin over the baseline. In practice, when gradients are unavailable, MSPD remains reliable and efficient. MSPD, MCGS, and Preemptive Reversion are each supported by formal theoretical proofs. The implementation is available at https://github.com/azrealwang/MSPD.

Uni-Flow: a unified autoregressive-diffusion model for complex multiscale flows

Spatiotemporal flows govern diverse phenomena across physics, biology, and engineering, yet modelling their multiscale dynamics remains a central challenge. Despite major advances in physics-informed machine learning, existing approaches struggle to simultaneously maintain long-term temporal evolution and resolve fine-scale structure across chaotic, turbulent, and physiological regimes. Here, we introduce Uni-Flow, a unified autoregressive-diffusion framework that explicitly separates temporal evolution from spatial refinement for modelling complex dynamical systems. The autoregressive component learns low-resolution latent dynamics that preserve large-scale structure and ensure stable long-horizon rollouts, while the diffusion component reconstructs high-resolution physical fields, recovering fine-scale features in a small number of denoising steps. We validate Uni-Flow across canonical benchmarks, including two-dimensional Kolmogorov flow, three-dimensional turbulent channel inflow generation with a quantum-informed autoregressive prior, and patient-specific simulations of aortic coarctation derived from high-fidelity lattice Boltzmann hemodynamic solvers. In the cardiovascular setting, Uni-Flow enables task-level faster than real-time inference of pulsatile hemodynamics, reconstructing high-resolution pressure fields over physiologically relevant time horizons in seconds rather than hours. By transforming high-fidelity hemodynamic simulation from an offline, HPC-bound process into a deployable surrogate, Uni-Flow establishes a pathway to faster-than-real-time modelling of complex multiscale flows, with broad implications for scientific machine learning in flow physics.

Enhancing Delta Compression in LLMs via SVD-based Quantization Error Minimization

Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) empowers Large Language Models (LLMs) with exceptional performance on specialized tasks, but it yields dense, high-dimensional delta parameters that pose severe storage and distribution challenges. Singular Value Decomposition (SVD)-based compression offers a compact representation for such delta parameters, but existing methods adopt heuristic quantization without clarifying underlying mechanisms, leading to poor generalizability. In this work, we propose PrinMix, a rigorous SVD-based framework that models quantization as an optimization problem, grounding the design in mathematical mechanisms. We first theoretically derive quantization error and identify a key singular-value-dominated scaling mechanism, which mathematically proves the necessity of mix-precision quantization. We then model the quantization scheme as a 0/1 Integer Linear Programming (ILP) problem, which yields optimal bit-budget-constrained solutions without empirical assumptions. Furthermore, PrinMix integrates a Reconstruction Target Correction (RTC) method to compensate for errors from the $\mathbf{V}$-then-$\mathbf{U}$ sequential quantization process. Extensive experiments confirm PrinMix performs well: for 7B LLMs, PrinMix outperforms SOTA Delta-CoMe on challenging benchmarks by 22.3% on AIME2024 and 6.1% on GQA.

OMGs: A multi-agent system supporting MDT decision-making across the ovarian tumour care continuum

Ovarian tumour management has increasingly relied on multidisciplinary tumour board (MDT) deliberation to address treatment complexity and disease heterogeneity. However, most patients worldwide lack access to timely expert consensus, particularly in resource-constrained centres where MDT resources are scarce or unavailable. Here we present OMGs (Ovarian tumour Multidisciplinary intelligent aGent System), a multi-agent AI framework where domain-specific agents deliberate collaboratively to integrate multidisciplinary evidence and generate MDT-style recommendations with transparent rationales. To systematically evaluate MDT recommendation quality, we developed SPEAR (Safety, Personalization, Evidence, Actionability, Robustness) and validated OMGs across diverse clinical scenarios spanning the care continuum. In multicentre re-evaluation, OMGs achieved performance comparable to expert MDT consensus ($4.45 \pm 0.30$ versus $4.53 \pm 0.23$), with higher Evidence scores (4.57 versus 3.92). In prospective multicentre evaluation (59 patients), OMGs demonstrated high concordance with routine MDT decisions. Critically, in paired human-AI studies, OMGs most substantially enhanced clinicians' recommendations in Evidence and Robustness, the dimensions most compromised when multidisciplinary expertise is unavailable. These findings suggest that multi-agent deliberative systems can achieve performance comparable to expert MDT consensus, with potential to expand access to specialized oncology expertise in resource-limited settings.

Local Models for Special Kähler Metric Singularities Along the Discriminant Locus of the $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ Hitchin Base

Freed (arXiv:hep-th/9712042) formulated special Kähler structures; in particular, the regular locus of the $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ Hitchin base $\mathcal{B}$ carries such a structure, while the associated metric $ω_{\mathrm{SK}}$ is singular along the discriminant locus $\mathcal{D}$. Baraglia-Huang (arXiv:1707.04975) computed its Taylor expansion near points of $\mathcal{B}\setminus\mathcal{D}$. Hitchin (arXiv:1712.09928) then defined subsystems attached to those components of $\mathcal{D}$ whose spectral curves have only nodal singularities; these components form smooth strata with induced special Kähler structures. We show that near such a stratum the canonical special Kähler metric has logarithmic asymptotics in transversal directions, whereas its tangential part converges to a metric on the stratum agreeing with the one from Hitchin's subsystems. Along any complex line through the origin of $\mathcal{B}$ and a point of the stratum, the metric restricts to a cone flat metric with cone angle $π$ at the origin only. Finally, the special Kähler potential extends continuously to these strata, and is $C^1$ on a portion of them.
