Joint Transmit Beamforming and Reflection Optimization for Beyond Diagonal RIS Aided Multi-Cell MIMO Communication

The sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks will rely on ultra-dense multi-cell deployment to meet the high rate and connectivity demands. However, frequency reuse leads to severe inter-cell interference, particularly for cell-edge users, which limits the communication performance. To overcome this challenge, we investigate a beyond diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS) aided multi-cell multi-user downlink MIMO communication system, where a BD-RIS is deployed to enhance desired signals and suppress both intra-cell and inter-cell interference. We formulate the joint optimization problem of the transmit beamforming matrices at the BSs and the BD-RIS reflection matrix to maximize the weighted sum rate of all users, subject to the challenging unitary constraint of the BD-RIS reflection matrix and transmit power constraints at the BSs. To tackle this non-convex and difficult problem, we apply the weighted minimum mean squared error (WMMSE) method to transform the problem into an equivalent tractable form, and propose an efficient alternating optimization (AO) based algorithm to iteratively update the transmit beamforming and BD-RIS reflection using Lagrange duality theory and manifold optimization. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed design over various benchmark schemes, and provide useful practical insights on the BD-RIS deployment strategy for multi-cell systems.

Linear and Numerical SDoF Bounds of Active RIS-Assisted MIMO Wiretap Interference Channel

The multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap interference channel (IC) serves as a canonical model for information-theoretic security, where a multiple-antenna eavesdropper attempts to intercept communications in a two-user MIMO IC system. The secure degrees-of-freedom (SDoF) of an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted MIMO wiretap IC is with practical interests but remains unexplored. In this paper, we establish both sum-SDoF lower and upper bounds through linear beamforming conditions and numerical methods. Specifically, our proposed lower bound is derived from transmission scheme design and corresponding solutions to the sum-SDoF maximization problem, formulated by linear integer programming. The solutions to this optimization problem addresses RIS element allocation for leakage and interference cancellation. The proposed upper bound is obtained by solving a nuclear norm minimization problem, leveraging the fact that nuclear norm serves as a convex relaxation of the rank function. For symmetry antenna configurations, we derive a closed-form lower bound. Extensive numerical simulations show that our proposed lower and upper bounds coincide across many antenna configurations, and our proposed lower bound outperforms the existing benchmark.

Beyond Diagonal Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided Integrated Sensing and Communication

Beyond diagonal intelligent reflecting surface (BD-IRS) is a new promising IRS architecture for which the reflection matrix is not limited to the diagonal structure as for conventional IRS. In this paper, we study a BD-IRS aided uplink integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system where sensing is performed in a device-based manner. Specifically, we aim to estimate the unknown and random location of an active target based on its uplink probing signals sent to a multi-antenna base station (BS) as well as the known prior distribution information of the target's location. Multiple communication users also simultaneously send uplink signals, resulting in a challenging mutual interference issue between sensing and communication. We first characterize the sensing performance metric by deriving the posterior Cram\'{e}r-Rao bound (PCRB) of the mean-squared error (MSE) when prior information is available. Then, we formulate a BD-IRS reflection matrix optimization problem to maximize the minimum expected achievable rate among the multiple users subject to a constraint on the PCRB as well as the lossless and reciprocal constraints on the BD-IRS reflection matrix. The formulated problem is non-convex and challenging to solve. To tackle this problem, we propose a penalty dual decomposition (PDD) based algorithm which can find a high-quality suboptimal solution with polynomial-time complexity. In addition, we propose and optimize a time-division multiple access (TDMA) based scheme which removes the sensing-communication mutual interference. Numerical results verify the effectiveness of the proposed designs and provide useful design insights such as the optimal choice of multiple access scheme.

Rate-Splitting and Sum-DoF for the K-User MISO Broadcast Channel with Mixed CSIT and Order-(K-1) Messages

In this paper, we propose a rate-splitting design and characterize the sum-degrees-of-freedom (DoF) for the K-user multiple-input-single-output (MISO) broadcast channel with mixed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) and order-(K-1) messages, where mixed CSIT refers to the delayed and imperfect-current CSIT, and order-(K-1) message refers to the message desired by K-1 users simultaneously. In particular, for the sum-DoF lower bound, we propose a rate-splitting scheme embedding with retrospective interference alignment. In addition, we propose a matching sum-DoF upper bound via genie signalings and extremal inequality. Opposed to existing works for K=2, our results show that the sum-DoF is saturated with CSIT quality when CSIT quality thresholds are satisfied for K>2.

On DoF of Active RIS-Assisted MIMO Interference Channel with Arbitrary Antenna Configurations: When Will RIS Help?

An active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been shown to be able to enhance the sum-of-degrees-of-freedom (DoF) of a two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel (IC) with equal number of antennas at each transmitter and receiver. However, for any number of receive and transmit antennas, when and how an active RIS can help to improve the sum-DoF are still unclear. This paper studies the sum-DoF of an active RIS-assisted two-user MIMO IC with arbitrary antenna configurations. In particular, RIS beamforming, transmit zero-forcing, and interference decoding are integrated together to combat the interference problem. In order to maximize the achievable sum-DoF, an integer optimization problem is formulated to optimize the number of eliminating interference links by RIS beamforming. As a result, the derived achievable sum-DoF can be higher than the sum-DoF of two-user MIMO IC, leading to a RIS gain. Furthermore, a sufficient condition of the RIS gain is given as the relationship between the number of RIS elements and the antenna configuration.

DoF Upper Bound on Three-User MISO Broadcast Channel with Two Antennas and Mixed CSIT

With delayed and imperfect current channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), namely mixed CSIT, the sum degrees-of-freedom (sum-DoF) in the two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel and the $K$-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel with not-less-than-$K$ transmit antennas have been obtained. However, the case of the three-user broadcast channel with two transmit antennas and mixed CSIT is still unexplored. In this paper, we investigate the sum-DoF upper bound of three-user MISO broadcast channel with two transmit antennas and mixed CSIT. By exploiting genie-aided signaling and extremal inequalities, we derive the sum-DoF upper bound as $(1-α)3/2 + 9α/4$, which is at most $12.5\%$ larger than the expected sum-DoF, given by $(1-α)3/2 + 2α$. This indicates that the gap may mitigate by better bounding the imperfect current CSIT counterpart.
