Event plane determination from Zero Degree Calorimeter at the Cooling-Storage-Ring External-target Experiment

The Cooling-Storage-Ring External-target Experiment (CSR-CEE) is a spectrometer to study the nature of nuclear matter created in heavy ion collision at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = $ 2.1 - 2.4 GeV, aiming to reveal Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) phase structure in the high-baryon density region. Collective flow is regarded as an effective probe for studying the properties of the medium in high-energy nuclear collisions. One of the main functions of the Zero-Degree Calorimeter (ZDC), a sub-detector system in CEE, is to determine the reaction-plane in heavy ion collisions, which is crucial for the measurements of collective flow and other reaction plane related analysis. In this paper, we illustrate the procedures of event plane determination from ZDC. Finally, predictions of the rapidity dependence of directed and elliptic flow for $p$, $d$, $t$, $^3$He and $^4$He, from 2.1 GeV U+U collisions of IQMD model calculations, are presented.

Resolving the $R_{\rm pA}$ and $v_2$ puzzle of $D^0$ mesons in $p-$Pb collisions at the LHC

It has been a challenge to understand the experimental data on both the nuclear modification factor and elliptic flow of $D^0$ mesons in $p-$Pb collisions at LHC energies. In this work, we study these collisions with an improved multi-phase transport model. By including the Cronin effect (i.e., transverse momentum broadening) and independent fragmentation for charm quarks, we provide the first simultaneous description of the $D^0$ meson $R_{\rm pA}$ and $v_2$ data at $p_{\rm T} \leq 8$ GeV$/c$. The model also reasonably describes the $D^0$ meson $p_{\rm T}$ spectra and the low-$p_{\rm T}$ charged hadron spectra, $R_{\rm pA}$ and $v_2$. Our results show that both parton interactions and the Cronin effect are important for the $D^0$ meson $R_{\rm pA}$, while parton interactions are mostly responsible for the $D^0$ meson $v_2$. It is thus essential to include the Cronin effect for the simultaneous description of the $D^0$ meson $R_{\rm pA}$ and $v_2$. This work implies that the Cronin effect could also be important for heavy hadrons in large systems.

Classifier for centrality determination with Zero Degree Calorimeter at the Cooling-Storage-Ring External-target Experiment

The Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC) plays a crucial role in determining centrality at the Cooling-Storage-Ring External-target Experiment (CEE) in the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL). A Boosted Decision Trees (BDT) multi-classification algorithm is employed to classify the centrality of the collision events based on the raw features from ZDC such as the number of fired channels and deposited energy. The data from simulated $\rm ^{238}U$ + $\rm ^{238}U$ collisions at 500 $\rm MeV/u$, generated by the IQMD event generator and subsequently modeled through the GEANT4 package, is employed to train and test the BDT model. The results showed the high accuracy of the multi-classification model adopted in ZDC for centrality determination, which is robust against variations in different factors of detector geometry and response. The study demonstrates a good performance of the CEE-ZDC for determining the centrality in nucleus-nucleus collisions.

Collective Excitation in High-Energy Nuclear Collisions -- In Memory of Professor Lianshou Liu

We celebrate the legacies of our friend and mentor Professor Lianshou Liu who was one of the pioneers for the phenomenology of multi-particle interactions and initiated the physics of relativistic heavy-ion collisions in China. In this article, we discuss some of the recent exciting experimental observations on the collective phenomena including collectivity, chirality, criticality, strangeness production, and thermal equilibrium in high-energy nuclear collisions. Future directions, especially the physics at high baryon density, will be discussed with a focus on the first-order phase boundary and hyperon-nucleon interactions.

Using local nuclear scaling of initial condition parameters to improve the system size dependence of transport model descriptions of nuclear collisions

We extensively study the system size dependence of nuclear collisions with a multi-phase transport model. Previously certain key parameters for the initial condition needed significantly different values for $pp$ and central $AA$ collisions for the model to reasonably describe the yields and transverse momentum spectra of the bulk matter in those collision systems. Here we scale two key parameters, the Lund string fragmentation parameter $b_L$ and the minijet transverse momentum cutoff $p_0$, with local nuclear thickness functions from the two colliding nuclei. This allows the model to use the parameter values for $pp$ collisions with the local nuclear scaling to describe the system size and centrality dependences of nuclear collisions self consistently. In addition to providing good descriptions of $pp$ collisions from 23.6 GeV to 13 TeV and reasonable descriptions of the centrality dependence of charged particle yields for Au+Au collisions from $7.7A$ GeV to $200A$ GeV and Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energies, the improved model can now well describe the centrality dependence of the mean transverse momentum of charged particles below $p_{\rm T} \lesssim 2$ GeV. It works similarly well for smaller systems including $p$Pb, Cu+Cu and Xe+Xe collisions.

A Study of the Properties of the QCD Phase Diagram in High-Energy Nuclear Collisions

With the aim of understanding the phase structure of nuclear matter created in high-energy nuclear collisions at finite baryon density, a beam energy scan program has been carried out at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). In this mini-review, most recent experimental results on collectivity, criticality and heavy flavor productions will be discussed. The goal here is to establish the connection between current available data and future heavy-ion collision experiments in a high baryon density region.

Energy dependence study of directed flow in Au+Au collisions using an improved coalescence in AMPT model

The rapidity-odd component of directed flow ($v_{1}$) of identified hardons ($π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $K^{0}_{S}$, $p$, $\bar{p}$, $ϕ$, $Ξ$, $\barΞ$, $Λ$, $\barΛ$) and partons ($u$, $\bar{u}$, $d$, $\bar{d}$, $s$, $\bar{s}$) in Au+Au collisions at various beam energies ($\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 54.4, 62.4, 200 GeV) using a multi-phase transport model is analyzed. A data driven approach (inspired from the experimental analysis) is performed here to distinguish the transported and produced quarks which are found to have different directed flow values at various collision beam energies. The coalescence sum rule (Number of Constituent Quark scaling) violation is observed at lower energies where hadronic matters dominate. The strange quark ($s$) and $ϕ$ meson slope (d$v_{1}$/d$y$) show a double sign change around 14.5 GeV, unlike other partons and hadrons. It suggests that strange quark is more sensitive to the softening of Equation of State (EoS).

Elliptic flow of transported and non-transported proton in Au+Au collisions within the UrQMD model

With the framework of UrQMD model, by tracing the number of initial quarks in protons, we study the elliptic flow of transported protons, poduced protons and anti-protons in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 39, 200 GeV. The difference of elliptic flow between transported protons and anti-protons is observed. The results of UrQMD model show a good agreement with the STAR results at low energies, but are deviate at high energies. It partly explains the $v_{2}$ difference between proton and anti-proton observed in the Beam Energy Scan program in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider~(RHIC).

Update of a Multi-Phase Transport Model with Modern Parton Distribution Functions and Nuclear Shadowing

A multi-phase transport (AMPT) model has been successful in explaining a wide range of observables in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In this work, we implement a modern set of free proton parton distribution functions and an impact parameter-dependent nuclear shadowing in the AMPT model. After refitting the parameters of the two-component initial condition model to the experimental data on $pp$ and $p \bar p$ total and inelastic cross sections from $\sqrt s \sim $ 4 GeV to 13 TeV, we study particle productions in $pp$ and $AA$ collisions. We show that the updated AMPT model with string melting can reasonably describe the overall particle yields and transverse momentum spectra for both $pp$ and $AA$ collisions at RHIC and LHC energies after we introduce a nuclear scaling of the minijet transverse momentum cutoff for $AA$ collisions at LHC energies that is motivated by the color glass condensate. Since heavy flavor and high-$p_{\rm T}$ particles are produced by perturbative-QCD processes and thus directly depend on parton distribution functions of nuclei, the updated AMPT model is expected to provide a more reliable description of these observables.

Effects of finite coverage on global polarization observables in heavy ion collisions

In non-central relativistic heavy ion collisions, the created matter possesses a large initial orbital angular momentum. Particles produced in the collisions could be polarized globally in the direction of the orbital angular momentum due to spin-orbit coupling. Recently, the STAR experiment has presented polarization signals for $Λ$ hyperons and possible spin alignment signals for $ϕ$ mesons. Here we discuss the effects of finite coverage on these observables. The results from a multi-phase transport and a toy model both indicate that a pseudorapidity coverage narrower than $|η|< \sim 1$ will generate a larger value for the extracted $ϕ$-meson $ρ_{00}$ parameter; thus a finite coverage can lead to an artificial deviation of $ρ_{00}$ from 1/3. We also show that a finite $η$ and $p_T$ coverage affect the extracted $p_H$ parameter for $Λ$ hyperons when the real $p_H$ value is non-zero. Therefore proper corrections are necessary to reliably quantify the global polarization with experimental observables.

Strangeness in STAR at RHIC

We present the recent results of strangeness production at the mid-rapidity in Au + Au collisions at RHIC, from $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 7.7 to 200 GeV. The $v_2$ of multi-strange baryon $Ω$ and $ϕ$ mesons are similar to that of pions and protons in the intermediate $p_T$ range (2 - 5 GeV/$c$) in $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200 GeV Au + Au collisions, indicating that the major part of collective flow has been built up at partonic stage. The breaking of mass ordering between $ϕ$ mesons and protons in the low $p_T$ range ($<$ 1 GeV/$c$) is consistent with a picture that $ϕ$ mesons are less sensitive to later hadronic interaction. The nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm CP}$ and baryon to meson ratio change dramatically when the collision energy is lower than 19.6 GeV. It suggests a possible change of medium property of the system compared to those from high energies.

An experimental review on elliptic flow of strange and multi-strange hadrons in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Strange hadrons, especially multi-strange hadrons are good probes for the early partonic stage of heavy ion collisions due to their small hadronic cross sections. In this paper, I give a brief review on the elliptic flow measurements of strange and multi-strange hadrons in relativistic heavy ion collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Elliptic and Triangular Flow of Identified Particles from the AMPT Model at RHIC Energies

The elliptic flow ($v_{2}$) at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = $ 11.5, 39, and 200 GeV and triangular flow ($v_{3}$) at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = $ 200 GeV of identified particles ($π^{\pm}, K^{\pm}, K^{0}_{S}, p, \bar{p}, ϕ, Λ$ and $\barΛ$) from 0\%--80\% central Au+Au collisions are analyzed using a multiphase transport (AMPT) model. It is shown that the experimental results from the $η$-sub event plane method can be reproduced with a parton scattering cross section between 1.5 and 3 mb. We also studied the differential and integrated $v_{2}/v_{3}$ ratios and conclude that they are anti-corrected with the parton scattering cross section.

Centrality dependence of elliptic flow of multi-strange hadrons in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

We present recent results of the mid-rapidity elliptic flow ($v_2$) for multi-strange hadrons and the $ϕ$ meson as a function of centrality in Au + Au collisions at the center of mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. The transverse momentum dependence of $ϕ$ and $Ω$ $v_2$ is similar to that of pion and proton, indicating that the heavier strange ($s$) quark flows as strongly as the lighter up ($u$) and down ($d$) quarks. These observations constitute a clear piece of evidence for the development of partonic collectivity in heavy-ion collisions at the top RHIC energy. In addition, the mass ordering of $v_2$ breaks between the $ϕ$ and proton at low transverse momenta in the 0-30\% centrality bin, possibly due to the effect of late hadronic interactions on the proton $v_2$.

A study of charm quark correlations in ultra-relativistic $p$ + $p$ collisions with PYTHIA

Measurements of heavy flavor quark (charm and bottom) correlations in heavy ion collisions are instrumental to understand the flavor dependence of energy loss mechanisms in hot and dense QCD media. Experimental measurements of these correlations in baseline $p$+$p$ collisions are crucial to understand the contributions of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD processes to the correlation functions and further help in interpreting correlation measurements in heavy ion collisions. In this paper, we investigate $D$-$\bar{D}$ meson correlations and $D$ with one particle from $D$ meson decay daughter correlations using PYTHIA Event Generator in $p$ + $p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200, 500 and 5500 GeV. Charm/bottom events are found to contribute mainly to the away side/near side pattern of $D$-electron correlations, respectively. In the energy region of RHIC, $D$-$\bar{D}$ correlations inherit initial $c$-$\bar{c}$ correlations and $B\rightarrow DX$ decay contribution is insignificant. Furthermore, Bottom quark correlations are suggested to be applicable at LHC energy, as the bottom contributions on $D$ related correlations are relatively large.

Event anisotropy $v_{2}$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 7.7 - 62.4 GeV with STAR

We present the $v_2$ measurement at midrapidity from Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39 and 62.4 GeV for inclusive charged hadrons and identified hadrons ($π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $K_{S}^{0}$, $p$, $\bar{p}$, $ϕ$, $Λ$, $\barΛ$, $Ξ^{-}$, $\barΞ^{+}$, $Ω^{-}$, $\barΩ^{+}$) up to 4 GeV/$c$ in $p_{T}$. The beam energy and centrality dependence of charged hadron $v_2$ are presented with comparison to higher energies at RHIC and LHC. The identified hadron $v_{2}$ are used to discuss the NCQ scaling for different beam energies. Significant difference in $v_{2}(p_{T})$ is observed between particles and corresponding anti-particles for $\sqrt{s_{NN}} <$ 39 GeV. These differences are more pronounced for baryons compared to mesons and they increase with decreasing energy.

The Study of Noncollectivity by the Forward-Backward Multiplicity Correlation Function

We propose a forward-backward multiplicity correlation function $C^N_{FB}$, which is experimentally accessible, to measure the noncollectivity contribution. We find that $C^N_{FB}$ is sensitive to the jet contribution for the particle-rich case. Surprisingly, it will automatically decrease for the particle-rare case. Our study indicates that similar decreasing trend observed previously is mainly driven by particle scarcity instead of jets. The function is studied in Au+Au collision at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV with a multiphase transport model (AMPT). We find that the jet fraction is about 10% at transverse momentum ($p_T$) around 2.5 GeV/$c$ and reaches up to 30% at 3.5 GeV/$c$. The implication of this study in the investigation of the noncollectivity contribution in elliptic anisotropy parameter $v_2$ is also discussed.
