Formal Duality in Finite Abelian Groups

Inspired by an experimental study of energy-minimizing periodic configurations in Euclidean space, Cohn, Kumar and Schürmann proposed the concept of formal duality between a pair of periodic configurations, which indicates an unexpected symmetry possessed by the energy-minimizing periodic configurations. Later on, Cohn, Kumar, Reiher and Schürmann translated the formal duality between a pair of periodic configurations into the formal duality of a pair of subsets in a finite abelian group. This insight suggests to study the combinatorial counterpart of formal duality, which is a configuration named formally dual pair. In this paper, we initiate a systematic investigation on formally dual pairs in finite abelian groups, which involves basic concepts, constructions, characterizations and nonexistence results. In contrast to the belief that primitive formally dual pairs are very rare in cyclic groups, we construct three families of primitive formally dual pairs in noncyclic groups. These constructions enlighten us to propose the concept of even sets, which reveals more structural information about formally dual pairs and leads to a characterization of rank three primitive formally dual pairs. Finally, we derive some nonexistence results about primitive formally dual pairs, which are in favor of the main conjecture that except two small examples, no primitive formally dual pair exists in cyclic groups.

Linking systems of difference sets

A linking system of difference sets is a collection of mutually related group difference sets, whose advantageous properties have been used to extend classical constructions of systems of linked symmetric designs. The central problems are to determine which groups contain a linking system of difference sets, and how large such a system can be. All previous constructive results for linking systems of difference sets are restricted to 2-groups. We use an elementary projection argument to show that neither the McFarland/Dillon nor the Spence construction of difference sets can give rise to a linking system of difference sets in non-2-groups. We make a connection to Kerdock and bent sets, which provides large linking systems of difference sets in elementary abelian 2-groups. We give a new construction for linking systems of difference sets in 2-groups, taking advantage of a previously unrecognized connection with group difference matrices. This construction simplifies and extends prior results, producing larger linking systems than before in certain 2-groups, new linking systems in other 2-groups for which no system was previously known, and the first known examples in nonabelian groups.

Construction and nonexistence of strong external difference families

Strong external difference families (SEDFs) were introduced by Paterson and Stinson as a more restrictive version of external difference families. SEDFs can be used to produce optimal strong algebraic manipulation detection codes. We characterize the parameters $(v, m, k, λ)$ of a nontrivial SEDF that is near-complete (satisfying $v=km+1$). We construct the first known nontrivial example of a $(v, m, k, λ)$ SEDF having $m > 2$. The parameters of this example are $(243,11,22,20)$, giving a near-complete SEDF, and its group is $\mathbb{Z}_3^5$. We provide a comprehensive framework for the study of SEDFs using character theory and algebraic number theory, showing that the cases $m=2$ and $m>2$ are fundamentally different. We prove a range of nonexistence results, greatly narrowing the scope of possible parameters of SEDFs.

The Minimum Distance of Some Narrow-Sense Primitive BCH Codes

Due to wide applications of BCH codes, the determination of their minimum distance is of great interest. However, this is a very challenging problem for which few theoretical results have been reported in the last four decades. Even for the narrow-sense primitive BCH codes, which form the most well-studied subclass of BCH codes, there are very few theoretical results on the minimum distance. In this paper, we present new results on the minimum distance of narrow-sense primitive BCH codes with special Bose distance. We prove that for a prime power $q$, the $q$-ary narrow-sense primitive BCH code with length $q^m-1$ and Bose distance $q^m-q^{m-1}-q^i-1$, where $\frac{m-2}{2} \le i \le m-\lfloor \frac{m}{3} \rfloor-1$, has minimum distance $q^m-q^{m-1}-q^i-1$. This is achieved by employing the beautiful theory of sets of quadratic forms, symmetric bilinear forms and alternating bilinear forms over finite fields, which can be best described using the framework of association schemes.

Parameters of two classes of LCD BCH codes

Historically, LCD cyclic codes were referred to as reversible cyclic codes, which had application in data storage. Due to a newly discovered application in cryptography, there has been renewed interest on LCD codes. In this paper, we explore two special families of LCD cyclic codes, which are both BCH codes. The dimensions and the minimum distances of these LCD BCH codes are investigated. As a byproduct, the parameters of some primitive BCH codes are also obtained.

The Weight Hierarchy of a Family of Cyclic Codes with Arbitrary Number of Nonzeroes

The generalized Hamming weights (GHWs) are fundamental parameters of linear codes. GHWs are of great interest in many applications since they convey detailed information of linear codes. In this paper, we continue the work of [10] to study the GHWs of a family of cyclic codes with arbitrary number of nonzeroes. The weight hierarchy is determined by employing a number-theoretic approach.

LCD Cyclic Codes over Finite Fields

In addition to their applications in data storage, communications systems, and consumer electronics, LCD codes -- a class of linear codes -- have been employed in cryptography recently. LCD cyclic codes were referred to as reversible cyclic codes in the literature. The objective of this paper is to construct several families of reversible cyclic codes over finite fields and analyse their parameters. The LCD cyclic codes presented in this paper have very good parameters in general, and contain many optimal codes. A well rounded treatment of reversible cyclic codes is also given in this paper.

Narrow-Sense BCH Codes over $\gf(q)$ with Length $n=\frac{q^m-1}{q-1}$

Cyclic codes over finite fields are widely employed in communication systems, storage devices and consumer electronics, as they have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. BCH codes, as a special subclass of cyclic codes, are in most cases among the best cyclic codes. A subclass of good BCH codes are the narrow-sense BCH codes over $\gf(q)$ with length $n=(q^m-1)/(q-1)$. Little is known about this class of BCH codes when $q>2$. The objective of this paper is to study some of the codes within this class. In particular, the dimension, the minimum distance, and the weight distribution of some ternary BCH codes with length $n=(3^m-1)/2$ are determined in this paper. A class of ternary BCH codes meeting the Griesmer bound is identified. An application of some of the BCH codes in secret sharing is also investigated.

Constructions of Maximum Distance Separable Symbol-Pair Codes Using Cyclic and Constacyclic Codes

Symbol-pair code is a new coding framework which is proposed to correct errors in the symbol-pair read channel. In particular, maximum distance separable (MDS) symbol-pair codes are a kind of symbol-pair codes with the best possible error-correction capability. Employing cyclic and constacyclic codes, we construct three new classes of MDS symbol-pair codes with minimum pair-distance five or six. Moreover, we find a necessary and sufficient condition which ensures a class of cyclic codes to be MDS symbol-pair codes. This condition is related to certain property of a special kind of linear fractional transformations. A detailed analysis on these linear fractional transformations leads to an algorithm, which produces many MDS symbol-pair codes with minimum pair-distance seven.

A Family of Reversible BCH Codes

Cyclic codes are an interesting class of linear codes due to their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms as well as their theoretical importance. BCH codes form a subclass of cyclic codes and are very important in both theory and practice as they have good error-correcting capability and are widely used in communication systems, storage devices and consumer electronics. However, the dimension and minimum distance of BCH codes are not known in general. The objective of this paper is to study the dimension and minimum distance of a family of BCH codes over finite fields, i.e., a class of reversible BCH codes.

The Weight Hierarchy of Some Reducible Cyclic Codes

The generalized Hamming weights (GHWs) of linear codes are fundamental parameters, the knowledge of which is of great interest in many applications. However, to determine the GHWs of linear codes is difficult in general. In this paper, we study the GHWs for a family of reducible cyclic codes and obtain the complete weight hierarchy in several cases. This is achieved by extending the idea of \cite{YLFL} into higher dimension and by employing some interesting combinatorial arguments. It shall be noted that these cyclic codes may have arbitrary number of nonzeroes.

New pseudo-planar binomials in characteristic two and related schemes

Planar functions in odd characteristic were introduced by Dembowski and Ostrom in order to construct finite projective planes in 1968. They were also used in the constructions of DES-like iterated ciphers, error-correcting codes, and signal sets. Recently, a new notion of pseudo-planar functions in even characteristic was proposed by Zhou. These new pseudo-planar functions, as an analogue of planar functions in odd characteristic, also bring about finite projective planes. There are three known infinite families of pseudo-planar monomial functions constructed by Schmidt and Zhou, and Scherr and Zieve. In this paper, three new classes of pseudo-planar binomials are provided. Moreover, we find that each pseudo-planar function gives an association scheme which is defined on a Galois ring.

On the Weight Distribution of Cyclic Codes with Niho Exponents

Recently, there has been intensive research on the weight distributions of cyclic codes. In this paper, we compute the weight distributions of three classes of cyclic codes with Niho exponents. More specifically, we obtain two classes of binary three-weight and four-weight cyclic codes and a class of nonbinary four-weight cyclic codes. The weight distributions follow from the determination of value distributions of certain exponential sums. Several examples are presented to show that some of our codes are optimal and some have the best known parameters.

Some New Results on the Cross Correlation of $m$-sequences

The determination of the cross correlation between an $m$-sequence and its decimated sequence has been a long-standing research problem. Considering a ternary $m$-sequence of period $3^{3r}-1$, we determine the cross correlation distribution for decimations $d=3^{r}+2$ and $d=3^{2r}+2$, where $\gcd(r,3)=1$. Meanwhile, for a binary $m$-sequence of period $2^{2lm}-1$, we make an initial investigation for the decimation $d=\frac{2^{2lm}-1}{2^{m}+1}+2^{s}$, where $l \ge 2$ is even and $0 \le s \le 2m-1$. It is shown that the cross correlation takes at least four values. Furthermore, we confirm the validity of two famous conjectures due to Sarwate et al. and Helleseth in this case.

Difference Sets with Few Character Values

The known families of difference sets can be subdivided into three classes: difference sets with Singer parameters, cyclotomic difference sets, and difference sets with gcd$(v,n)>1$. It is remarkable that all the known difference sets with gcd$(v,n)>1$ have the so-called character divisibility property. In 1997, Jungnickel and Schmidt posed the problem of constructing difference sets with gcd$(v,n)>1$ that do not satisfy this property. In an attempt to attack this problem, we use difference sets with three nontrivial character values as candidates, and get some necessary conditions.

The Weight Distribution of a Class of Cyclic Codes Related to Hermitian Forms Graphs

The determination of weight distribution of cyclic codes involves evaluation of Gauss sums and exponential sums. Despite of some cases where a neat expression is available, the computation is generally rather complicated. In this note, we determine the weight distribution of a class of reducible cyclic codes whose dual codes may have arbitrarily many zeros. This goal is achieved by building an unexpected connection between the corresponding exponential sums and the spectrums of Hermitian forms graphs.
