Geometry of lightlike locus on mixed type surfaces in Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space from a contact viewpoint

A surface in the Lorentz-Minkowski $3$-space is generally a mixed type surface, namely, it has the lightlike locus. We study local differential geometric properties of such a locus on a mixed type surface. We define a frame field along a lightlike locus, and using it, we define two lightlike ruled surfaces along a lightlike locus which can be regarded as lightlike approximations of the surface along the lightlike locus. We study a relationship of singularities of these lightlike surfaces and differential geometric properties of the lightlike locus. We also consider the intersection curve of two lightlike approximations, which gives a model curve of the lightlike locus.

Unimodular families of symmetric matrices

We introduce the volume-preserving equivalence among symmetric matrix-valued map-germs which is the unimodular version of Bruce's $\mathcal{G}$-equivalence. The key concept to deduce unimodular classification out of classification relative to $\mathcal{G}$-equivalence is symmetrical quasi-homogeneity, which is a generalization of the condition for a $2 \times 2$ symmetric matrix-valued map-germ in Corollary~2.1 (ii) by Bruce, Goryunov and Zakalyukin. If a $\mathcal{G}$-equivalence class contains a symmetrically quasi-homogeneous representative, the class coincides with that relative to the volume-preserving equivalence (up to orientation reversing diffeomorphism in case if the ground field is real). By using that we show that all the simple classes relative to $\mathcal{G}$-equivalence in Bruce's list coincides with those relative to the volume preserving equivalence. Then, we classify map-germs from the plane to the set of $2 \times 2$ and $3 \times 3$ real symmetric matrices of corank at most $1$ and of $\mathcal{G}_e$-codimension less than $9$ and we show some of the normal forms split into two different unimodular singularities. We provide several examples to illustrate that non simplicity does not imply non symmetrical quasi-homogeneity and the condition that a map-germ is symmetrically quasi-homogeneous is stronger than one that each component of the map-germ is quasi-homogeneous. We also present an example of non symmetrically quasi-homogeneous normal form relative to $\mathcal{G}$ and its corresponding formal unimodular normal form.

Pedals and inversions of quadratic curves

The pedal of a curve in the Euclidean plane is a classical subject which has a singular point at the inflection point of the original curve or the pedal point. The primitive of a curve is a curve given by the inverse construction for making the pedal. In this paper we consider the pedal of a quadratic curve. On of the main results gives a characterization of such curves, which is one of the generalizations of limacons of Pascal.

Primitivoids and inversions of plane curves

The pedal of a curve in the Euclidean plane is a classical subject which has a singular point at the inflection point of the original curve. The primitive of a curve is a curve given by the inverse construction for making the pedal. We consider relatives of the primitive of a plane curve which we call primitivoids. We investigate the relationship of primitivoids and pedals of plane curves.

Geometric equivalence among smooth map germs

We consider equivalence relations among smooth map germs with respect to geometry of G-structures on the target space germ. These equivalence relations are natural generalization of right-left equivalence (i.e., A-equivalence) in the sense of Thom-Mather depending on geometric structures on the target space germ. Unfortunately, these equivalence relations are not necessarily geometric subgroups in the sense of Damon (1984). However, we have interesting applications of these equivalence relations.

Curves in a spacelike hypersurface in the Minkowski space-time

Submanifolds in Lorentz-Minkowski space are investigated from various mathematical viewpoints and are of interest also in relativity theory. We define the hyperbolic surface and the de Sitter surface of a curve in the spacelike hypersurface M in the Minkowski 4-space. These surfaces are respectively located in the hyperbolic 3-space and in the de Sitter 3-space. We use techniques of the theory of singularities in order to describe the generic shape of these surfaces and of their singular value sets. We also investigate geometric meanings of those singularities. The results in this paper contribute to the study of the extrinsic geometry of curves in different ambient spaces.

Flat surfaces along swallowtails

We consider developable surfaces along the singular set of a swallowtail which are considered to be flat approximations of the swallowtail. For the study of singularities of such developable surfaces, we introduce the notion of Darboux frames along swallowtails and invariants. As a by-product, we give a new example of a frontal which is locally homeomorphic to a swallowtail.

Lightlike hypersurfaces along spacelike submanifolds in anti-de Sitter space

Anti-de Sitter space is the Lorentzian space form with negative curvature. In this paper we consider lightlike hypersurfaces along spacelike submanifolds in anti-de Sitter space with general codimension. In particular, we investigate the singularities of lightlike hypersurfaces as an application of the theory of Legendrian singularities.

Caustics and Maxwell sets of world sheets in anti-de Sitter space

A world sheet in anti-de Sitter space is a timelike submanifold consisting of a one-parameter family of spacelike submanifolds. We consider the family of lightlike hypersurfaces along spacelike submanifolds in the world sheet. The locus of the singularities of lightlike hypersurfaces along spacelike submanifolds forms the caustic of the world sheet. This notion is originally introduced by Bousso and Randall in theoretical physics. In this paper we give a mathematical framework for the caustics of world sheets as an application of the theory of graph-like Legendrian unfoldings.

Caustics of world hyper-sheets in the Minkowski space-time

In the Minkowski space-time, a world hyper-sheet is a timelike hypersurface consisting of a one-parameter family of spacelike submanifolds. Recently, Bousso and Randall introduced the notion of caustics of world hyper-sheets in order to define the notion of holographic domains in space-time. Here, we give a mathematical framework for describing the caustics of world hyper-sheets in the Minkowski space-time. As a consequence, we investigate the singularities of the caustics of world hyper-sheets and whose geometrical meanings. Although the Minkowski space-time has zero gravity, this framework gives a simple toy model for general cases.

The lightlike geometry of marginally trapped surfaces in Minkowski space-time

The lightlike geometry of codimension two spacelike submanifolds in Lorentz-Minkowski space has been developed in [Izumiya, S. and Romero Fuster, M. C. Selecta Mathematica (NS), 13 23--55 (2007)] which is a natural Lorentzian analogue of the classical Euclidean differential geometry of hypersurfaces. In this paper we investigate a special class of surfaces (i.e., marginally trapped surfaces) in Minkowski space-time from the view point of the lightlike geometry.

Geometry of world sheets in Lorentz-Minkowski space

A world sheet in Lorentz-Minkowski space is a timelike submanifold consisting of a one-parameter family of spacelike submanifolds in Lorentz-Minkowski space. In this paper we investigate differential geometry of world sheets in Lorentz-Minkowski space as an application of the theory of big wave fronts.

The theory of graph-like Legendrian unfoldings and its applications

This is mainly a survey article on the recent development of the theory of graph-like Legendrian unfoldings and its applications. The notion of big Legendrian submanifolds was introduced by Zakalyukin for describing the wave front propagations. Graph-like Legendrian unfoldings belong to a special class of big Legendrian submanifolds. Although this is a survey article, some new original results and the corrected proofs of some results are given.
