On the Universal Cuspy Behavior in Black Hole Shadows

This work investigates the universality of cusp formation in the shadows of compact objects. The emergence of cusps is accompanied by three interrelated phenomena: a topological charge transition, an equal-area law governing the self-intersecting structure, and universal critical scaling behavior. We demonstrate that, because these phenomena originate from the global morphology of the shadow, they are fundamentally independent of specific spacetime metric details and apply across diverse models. These features are systematically analyzed for the Kerr black hole endowed with a running Newton coupling. By extending our framework to rotating traversable wormholes, we confirm that the same universal behavior persists in more general compact objects. Our study uncovers the universality underlying cusp formation, offering a model-independent framework for characterizing possible non-Kerr shadow morphologies.

Probing phase transitions of regular black holes in anti-de Sitter space with Lyapunov exponent

We investigate the relationship between thermodynamic phase transitions and the Lyapunov exponent of charged regular anti-de Sitter black holes in quasi-topological gravity. Our results show that the Lyapunov exponent displays oscillatory behavior during phase transitions. Moreover, along the coexistence curve the Lyapunov exponent changes discontinously and continuously at the critical point. Near the critical point, the Lyapunov exponent follows a power-law behavior with a critical exponent of 1/2, suggesting its role as an order parameter and encodes information on black hole phase transitions.

Topological perspective on bulk boundary thermodynamic equivalence

We establish an exact duality between the extended thermodynamics of five-dimensional charged Gauss-Bonnet AdS black holes and the thermodynamic framework of the dual boundary conformal field theory (CFT). The thermodynamics of the dual CFT involves two central charges originating from the trace anomaly. We demonstrate a precise correspondence between the extended first laws on the bulk and boundary sides. Moreover, the topological charges of the CFT thermodynamics, associated with the phase transition and critical point, coincide with those of the corresponding bulk black hole.

D-dimensional black holes in extended Gauss-Bonnet gravity

In this work, we present charged spherically symmetric anti-de Sitter black hole solutions in $d$ dimensions ($d \geq 5$) within the framework of extended Gauss--Bonnet gravity. Moreover, by employing dimensional regularization of the extended Gauss--Bonnet term, we further obtain charged anti-de Sitter black hole solutions in three- and four-dimensional spacetimes. Furthermore, we also obtain a three-dimensional rotating black hole solution in a special case. These solutions contain an independent vector-sector parameter and exhibit different horizon structures compared with the standard charged Gauss--Bonnet branch. For the charged solutions, we also give a concise Iyer-Wald thermodynamic analysis. Nonetheless, their asymptotic behavior at spatial infinity remains consistent with that of the corresponding black holes in general relativity.

Deciphering black hole phase transitions through photon spheres

Black hole thermodynamics is a crucial and foundational aspect of black hole physics, yet its observational verification remains exceptionally challenging. The photon sphere of a black hole, a manifestation of strong gravitational effects, is intrinsically linked to its shadow, which has been directly captured through observations made by the Event Horizon Telescope. Investigating black hole thermodynamics from a gravitational perspective presents an intriguing avenue for research. This paper obtains an analytical formula for the coexistence curve and investigates the relationship between the thermodynamic phase transition and the photon sphere of a black hole with quantum anomaly. It proposes that the photon sphere encodes information about the black hole phase transition, arguing that the change in the photon sphere radius can serve as an order parameter characterizing the black hole's phase transition.

Test fields and naked singularities: is the second law the cosmic censor?

It has been claimed that a Kerr-Newman black hole can generically be overspun by neutral test fields, and it has been argued that even when backreactions are taken into account, the black hole can still be destroyed. In this paper, we revisit the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for a Kerr-Newman black hole with a test scalar field and a neutrino field, and point out that the assumption in previous work regarding the energy and angular momentum of the test fields absorbed by the black hole violates the second law of black hole thermodynamics. By solving the test scalar field and neutrino field near the event horizon explicitly, we demonstrate that an extremal Kerr-Newman black hole cannot be overspun by a test scalar field but can be destroyed by a neutrino field. Our results indicate that the condition required to overspin an extremal Kerr-Newman black hole coincides with the condition needed to violate the second law of black hole thermodynamics. Furthermore, we observe that such a violation of the second law might inevitably result in a breakdown of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture.

Extended thermodynamical topology of black hole

Thermodynamical topology has emerged as a powerful framework for classifying the thermodynamical behavior of black holes. Three distinct yet complementary topological invariants have been employed to characterize black hole phases, spinodal curves, and critical points in black hole thermodynamics. In this work, we develop a unified framework that integrates these three topological approaches and introduce the concept of extended thermodynamical topology, providing a clear physical interpretation. As a first step, we apply this framework to black holes in Einstein gravity, systematically elucidating their phase structure in terms of topological invariants. We then extend our analysis to black holes in 7-dimensional Lovelock gravity, where novel thermodynamic phenomena naturally emerge from the topological perspective. Moreover, we explore the connection between critical exponents and the extended thermodynamical topology, uncovering a correspondence between the zeros of the $k$-th order vector field and the associated critical exponents. Our study demonstrates that extended thermodynamical topology offers a robust and fine-grained framework for analyzing and classifying black hole phase transitions.

Overcharging a nonsingular black hole in general relativity: the nonlinear electrodynamic field effects

The Ayón-Beato García (ABG) solution describes a nonlinear electrodynamic nonsingular black hole in general relativity and can be regarded as a strong field correction to the Reissner-Nordström solution. We exam the possibility of destroying the ABG nonsingular black hole with a test charged particle and a complex scalar field. By comparing with the results of gadenken experiment to destroy the Reissner-Nordström black hole, we get the nonlinear electrodynamic field effects on the destruction of the event horizon. We obtain the parameter regions of the particle and scalar field, which allow us to destroy the event horizon of an extremal and near-extremal ABG black hole. Our findings show that both can be destroyed due to nonlinear electrodynamic effects. Interestingly, the parameter intervals for the charged particle and scalar field needed to destroy the event horizon of an extremal black hole are identical. Since the ABG black hole is nonsingular, our results remain consistent with the weak cosmic censorship conjecture and may offer a means to explore the interior of a black hole.

Holographic thermodynamics of a five-dimensional neutral Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole

Motivated by the recent progress on the holographic dual of the extended thermodynamics for black holes in anti-de-Sitter (AdS) space, we investiggate the hologrphic thermodynamics for the five-dimensional neutral Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole in the context of the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence. Through the extended bulk thermodynamics for the five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole, we derive the first law of the CFT thermodynamics which is obtained by directly translating the arbitrary conformal factors in the dual CFT. In addition to the newly defined chemical potential $μ$ conjugating to the central charge $C$, we obtain other pairs of thermodynamics for the CFT, such as the temperature $\tilde{T}$ and the entropy $S$, the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $\tildeα$ and its conjugate variable $ \tilde{\mathcal{A}}$, the pressure $\mathcal{P}$ and its conjugate volume $\mathcal{V}$. In the fixed $C$, $\mathcal{V}$ and $\tildeα$ canonical ensemble, we obtain the canonical description of the CFT thermodynamics and observe the standard swallowtail behavior in the Helmholtz free energy vs the temperature plot. The self-intersection point of the Helmholtz free energy indicates the phase transition between the high and low entropy states of the CFT. By using Maxwell's equal area law, we get the critical point and coexistence curve for the high and low entropy phases of the CFT. Besides, we get the critical exponents for the CFT, and find that the critical point and critical exponents associated with the $\tilde{T}-S$ criticality of the CFT are the same as those of the five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole.

Thermodynamics of the Kerr-AdS black hole from an ensemble-averaged theory

Exploring the universal structure of the gravitational path integral beyond semi-classical saddles and uncovering a compelling statistical interpretation of black hole thermodynamics have long been significant challenges. We investigate the statistical interpretation of the Kerr-AdS black hole thermodynamics through an ensemble-averaged theory. By extending the phase space to include all possible states with conical singularities in their Euclidean counterparts, we derive the probability distribution of different states inherited from the Euclidean gravitational path integral. Moreover, we can define a density matrix of all states in the phase space. By ensemble-averaging over all states, we show that the black hole phase transition naturally arises in the semi-classical limit. Away from the semi-classical regime, the ensemble-averaged theory exhibits a notable deviation from the conventional phase transition. Expanding around the classical saddles yields the subleading-order correction to the Gibbs free energy, which is half of the Hawking temperature. We demonstrate that the half Hawking temperature correction is a universal feature inherent to black holes in asymptotically AdS spacetime. With the subleading-order correction to Gibbs free energy, we also suggest that the whole black hole thermodynamic should be corrected accordingly.

Dynamical formation of axionic hair around charged black hole

In this paper, we present a nonlinear numerical investigation on the dynamical scalarization process of a Reissner-Nordström black hole, incorporating an axionic scalar potential within the framework of the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. By scrutinizing the evolution of the irreducible mass of the black hole and the value of scalar field on the apparent horizon across various parameters of the axionic potential, we elucidate the correlations between the final states of scalarized charged black hole and the axionic potential. We observe that the inclusion of the axionic potential can either decrease or increase the irreducible mass of the final scalarized black hole, depending on the strength of the coupling between the dilation and the electric invariant $F_{μν}F^{μν}$. Regarding the value of the scalar field on the apparent horizon, we find that it decreases with the inclusion of the axionic potential. Our results contribute to an important understanding of the dynamical scalarization of black holes and the potential configurations of scalar hair with various self-interactions.

First law of black hole thermodynamics and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for Kerr-Newman Taub-NUT black holes

Stimulated by the recent researches of black hole thermodynamics for black hole with Newman-Unti-Tamburino (NUT) parameter, we investigate the thermodynamics and weak cosmic censorship conjecture for a Kerr-Newman Taub-NUT black hole. By defining the electric charge as a Komar integral over the event horizon, we construct a consistent first law of black hole thermodynamics for a Kerr-Newman Taub-NUT black hole through Euclidean action. Having the first law of black hole thermodynamics, we investigate the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for the black hole with a charged test particle and a complex scalar field. We find that an extremal black hole cannot be destroyed by a charged test particle and a complex scalar field. For a near-extremal black hole with small NUT parameter, it can be destroyed by a charged test particle but cannot be destroyed by a complex scalar field.

Overcharging a Reissner-Nordström Taub-NUT regular black hole

The destruction of a regular black hole event horizon might provide us the possibility to access regions inside black hole event horizon. This paper investigates the possibility of overcharging a charged Taub-NUT regular black hole via the scattering of a charged field and the absorption of a charged particle. For the charged scalar field scattering, both the near-extremal and extremal charged Taub-NUT regular black holes cannot be overcharged. For the test charged particle absorption, the result shows that the event horizon of the extremal charged Taub-NUT regular black hole still exists while the event horizon of the near-extremal one can be destroyed. However, if the charge and energy cross the event horizon in a continuous path, the near-extremal charged Taub-NUT regular black hole might not be overcharged.

Destroying the event horizon of a nonsingular rotating quantum-corrected black hole

The destruction of the event horizon of a nonsingular black hole, which is not prevented by the weak cosmic censorship conjecture, might provide us the possibility to access quantum regime of gravity inside black hole. We investigate the possibility of overspinning a nonsingular rotating quantum-corrected black hole by a test particle and a scalar field in this paper, and analyse the effect of the quantum parameter on the destruction of the event horizon. For the test particle injection, both extremal and near-extremal black holes cannot be overspun due to the existence of the quantum parameter. And the larger the quantum parameter the harder the black hole to be overspun. It seems that the quantum parameter acts as a protector to prevent the black hole to be destroyed. However, for the test scalar field scattering, both extremal and near-extremal black holes can be destroyed. Due to the loop quantum gravity correction, the angular velocity of the extremal black hole shifts from that of the extremal Kerr black hole. This provides a small range of wave modes to destroy the event horizon of the quantum-corrected black hole.

Kinetics of a phase transition for a Kerr-AdS black hole on the free-energy landscape

By treating the order parameter as a stochastic thermal fluctuating variable for small-large black hole phase transition, we investigate the kinetic process of phase transition for the Kerr-AdS (anti-de Sitter) black holes on free energy landscape. We find that the extremal points of the off shell Gibbs free energy correspond to physical black holes. For small-large black hole phase transition, the off shell Gibbs free energy exhibits a double well behavior with the same depth. Contrary to previous research for the kinetics of phase transition for the Kerr-Newman-AdS family black holes on a free energy landscape, we find that there is a lower bound for the order parameter and the lower bound corresponds to extremal black holes. In particular, the off shell Gibbs free energy is zero instead of divergent as previous work suggested for vanishing black hole horizon radius, which corresponds to the Gibbs free energy of a thermal AdS space. The investigation for the evolution of the probability distribution for the phase transition indicates that the initial stable small (large) black hole tends to switch to stable large (small) black hole. Increasing the temperature along the coexistence curve, the switching process becomes faster and the probability distribution reaches the final stationary Boltzmann distribution at a shorter time. The distribution of the first passage time indicates the time scale of the small-large black hole phase transition, and the peak of the distribution becomes sharper and shifts to the left with the increase of temperature along the coexistence curve. This suggests that a considerable first passage process occurs at a shorter time for higher temperature. The investigation of the kinetics of phase transition might provide us new insight into the underlying microscopic interactions.

Weak cosmic censorship conjecture is not violated for a rotating linear dilaton black hole

In this paper, we investigate the validity of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture(WCCC) for a rotating linear dilaton black hole from two different methods. By using the classsical ingoing test particle method, we obtain the same results as given in the new version of gedanken experiment recently proposed by Wald. We find that even for this rotating linear dilaton black hole the Iyer-Wald formalism is still functioning. By comparing these two methods, we find that the same result will be obtained in both cases up to first order. The nearly extremal black hole can be overspun, while the extremal one cannot be overspun. When we include the second order modification into consideration, the Iyer-Wald method show that even for the nearly extremal black hole, the WCCC is well protected. These results imply that weak cosmic censorship conjecture is still valid using the ingoing test particle method up to second order modification.

Weak cosmic censorship conjecture for the novel $4D$ charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole with test scalar field and particle

Recent researches of the novel $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity have attracted great attention. In this paper, we investigate the validity of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for a novel $4D$ charged EGB black hole with test charged scalar field and test charged particle respectively. For the test charged field scattering process, we find that both extremal and near-extremal black holes cannot be overcharged. For the test charged particle injection, to first order, an extremal black hole cannot be overcharged while a near-extremal $4D$ charged EGB black hole can be destroyed. To second order, however, both extremal and near-extremal $4D$ charged EGB black holes can be overcharged for positive Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant; for negative Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, an extremal black hole cannot be overcharged and the validity of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for a near-extremal black hole depends on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant.

Weak cosmic censorship conjecture for Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole with test scalar field and particle

Motivated by the recent researches of black holes with NUT charge, we investigate the validity of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole with a test massive scalar field and a test particle, respectively. For the scalar field scattering gedanken experiment, we consider an infinitesimal time interval process. The result shows that both extremal and near-extremal Kerr-Taub-NUT black holes cannot be over-spun. For the test particle thought experiment, the study suggests that extremal Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole cannot be over-spun; while near-extremal Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole can be over-spun. By comparing the two methods, the results indicate the time interval for particles crossing the black hole horizon might be important for consideration of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture.
