Even-harmonic generation through nonequilibrium steady-state symmetry breaking

High-harmonic generation (HHG) in inversion-symmetric systems is typically restricted to odd harmonics by symmetry. Here, we show that this selection rule can be broken without modifying the underlying Hamiltonian. We investigate a boundary-driven Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain coupled to source and sink reservoirs and demonstrate that dissipative dynamics generates a nonequilibrium steady state carrying a finite DC current. While the SSH Hamiltonian retains inversion symmetry, the current-carrying steady-state density matrix does not, leading to the emergence of even harmonics in the emitted spectrum. Using a correlation-matrix approach based on the Lindblad master equation, we obtain the steady state and calculate the resulting HHG response. We find that the intensity of the even harmonics is directly controlled by the transport current, establishing a link between nonequilibrium charge transport and HHG selection rules. Our results uncover a mechanism for even-harmonic generation that relies solely on nonequilibrium steady-state symmetry breaking and provide a route to probing transport currents through ultrafast nonlinear spectroscopy in centrosymmetric quantum systems.

Harmonic generation with topological edge states and electron-electron interaction

It has been found previously that the presence or absence of topological edge states in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model has a huge impact on harmonic generation spectra. More specifically, the yield of harmonics for harmonic orders that correspond to photon energies below the band gap is many orders of magnitude different in the trivial and topological phase. It is shown in this work that this effect is still present if electron-electron interaction is taken into account, i.e., if a Hubbard term is added to the SSH Hamiltonian. To that end, finite SSH-Hubbard chains at half filling are considered that are short enough to be accessible to exact diagonalization but already showing edge states in the topological phase. We show that the huge difference in the harmonic yield between the trivial and the topological phase can be reproduced with few-level models employing only the many-body ground state and a few excited many-body states.

Enhanced and stable spin Hall conductivity in a disordered time-reversal and inversion symmetry broken topological insulator thin film

We consider a disordered topological insulator thin film placed on the top of a ferromagnetic insulator with a perpendicular exchange field $M$ and subjected to a perpendicular electric field. The presence of ferromagnetic insulator causes that bottom surface states of the topological insulator thin film become spin polarized and the electric field provides a potential difference $V$ between the two surface states, resulting in breaking of time-reversal and inversion symmetry in the system. Using Kubo formalism and employing the first Born approximation as well as the self-consistent Born approximation, we calculate the spin Hall conductivity. We find that for small values of $V$, a large spin conductivity can be generated through large values of $M$ away from the charge neutrality point. But for large values of $V$, the spin conductivity can be promoted even with small values of $M$ around the charge neutrality point. The effect of vertex corrections and the stability of the obtained large spin conductivity against disorders are also examined.
