Fast Maximum-Likelihood Decoder for 4*4 Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time Block Code

This letter introduces two fast maximum-likelihood (ML) detection methods for 4*4 quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (QOSTBC). The first algorithm with a relatively simple design exploits structure of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations to achieve its goal and the second algorithm, though somewhat more complex, can be applied to any arbitrary constellation. Both decoders utilize a novel decomposition technique for ML metric which divides the metric into independent positive parts and a positive interference part. Search spaces of symbols are substantially reduced by employing the independent parts and statistics of noise. Finally, the members of search spaces are successively evaluated until the metric is minimized. Simulation results confirm that the proposed decoder is superior to some of the most recently published methods in terms of complexity level. More specifically, the results verified that application of the new algorithm with 1024-QAM would require reduced computational complexity compared to state-of-the-art solution with 16-QAM.

Performance Enhancement of the Golden Code by Utilizing ORIOL Antenna

In this paper, a novel method is exposed to improve the performance of the Golden code, by using octagonal reconfigurable isolated orthogonal element (ORIOL) antennas, instead of a conventional microstrip patch antenna. The aforementioned antenna, should be employed in both the transmitter and the receiver sides, to approach the mentioned improvement. As a matter fact, in this paper, we recommend space-time-polarization diversity instead of space-time singly; therefore it is obvious that by employing the aforementioned technique, the system obtains more strength against destructive fading. The simulations for different rates have confirmed that, utilizing ORIOL antenna outperforms patch microstrip one, which is roughly about $2$ to $3$ dB, according to the rates.

Two Quasi Orthogonal Space-Time Block Codes with Better Performance and Low Complexity Decoder

This paper presents two new space time block codes (STBCs) with quasi orthogonal structure for an open loop multi-input single-output (MISO) systems. These two codes have been designed to transmit from three or four antennas at the transmitter and be given to one antenna at the receiver. First, the proposed codes are introduced and their structures are investigated. This is followed by the demonstration of how the decoder decodes half of transmitted symbols independent of the other half. The last part of this paper discusses the simulation results, makes performance comparison against other popular approaches and concludes that the proposed solutions offer superiority.

Toward Smart Power Grids: Communication Network Design for Power Grids Synchronization

In smart power grids, keeping the synchronicity of generators and the corresponding controls is of great importance. To do so, a simple model is employed in terms of swing equation to represent the interactions among dynamics of generators and feedback control. In case of having a communication network available, the control can be done based on the transmitted measurements by the communication network. The stability of system is denoted by the largest eigenvalue of the weighted sum of the Laplacian matrices of the communication infrastructure and power network. In this work, we use graph theory to model the communication network as a graph problem. Then, Ant Colony System (ACS) is employed for optimum design of above graph for synchronization of power grids. Performance evaluation of the proposed method for the 39-bus New England power system versus methods such as exhaustive search and Rayleigh quotient approximation indicates feasibility and effectiveness of our method for even large scale smart power grids.
