Partial orders on conjugacy classes in the Weyl group and on unipotent conjugacy classes

Let $G$ be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field and let $W$ be its Weyl group. In a series of papers, Lusztig introduced a map from the set $[W]$ of conjugacy classes of $W$ to the set $[G_u]$ of unipotent classes of $G$. This map, when restricted to the set of elliptic conjugacy classes $[W_e]$ of $W$, is injective. In this paper, we show that Lusztig's map $[W_e] \to [G_u]$ is order-reversing, with respect to the natural partial order on $[W_e]$ arising from combinatorics and the natural partial order on $[G_u]$ arising from geometry.

From conjugacy classes in the Weyl group to semisimple conjugacy classes

Suppose $G$ is a connected complex semisimple group and $W$ is its Weyl group. The lifting of an element of $W$ to $G$ is semisimple. This induces a well-defined map from the set of elliptic conjugacy classes of $W$ to the set of semisimple conjugacy classes of $G$. In this paper, we give a uniform algorithm to compute this map. We also consider the twisted case.

Fully Hodge-Newton decomposable Shimura varieties

The motivation for this paper is the study of arithmetic properties of Shimura varieties, in particular the Newton stratification of the special fiber of a suitable integral model at a prime with parahoric level structure. This is closely related to the structure of Rapoport-Zink spaces and of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We prove a Hodge-Newton decomposition for affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties and for the special fibres of Rapoport-Zink spaces, relating these spaces to analogous ones defined in terms of Levi subgroups, under a certain condition (Hodge-Newton decomposability) which can be phrased in combinatorial terms. Second, we study the Shimura varieties in which every non-basic $σ$-isogeny class is Hodge-Newton decomposable. We show that (assuming the axioms of \cite{HR}) this condition is equivalent to nice conditions on either the basic locus, or on all the non-basic Newton strata of the Shimura varieties. We also give a complete classification of Shimura varieties satisfying these conditions. While previous results along these lines often have restrictions to hyperspecial (or at least maximal parahoric) level structure, and/or quasi-split underlying group, we handle the cases of arbitrary parahoric level structure, and of possibly non-quasi-split underlying groups. This results in a large number of new cases of Shimura varieties where a simple description of the basic locus can be expected. As a striking consequence of the results, we obtain that this property is independent of the parahoric subgroup chosen as level structure. We expect that our conditions are closely related to the question whether the weakly admissible and admissible loci coincide.

A geometric interpretation of Newton strata

The Newton strata of a reductive $p$-adic group are introduced in \cite{Newton} and play some role in the representation theory of $p$-adic groups. In this paper, we give a geometric interpretation of the Newton strata.

Semi-modules and irreducible components of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties

Let $G$ be the Weil restriction of a general linear group. By extending the method of semi-modules developed by de Jong, Oort, Viehmann and Hamacher, we obtain a stratification of the affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for $G$ (in the affine Grassmannian) attached to a minuscule coweight and a basic element. As an application, we verify a conjecture by Chen and Zhu on irreducible components of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for $G$.

On the $μ$-ordinary locus of a Shimura variety

In this paper, we study the $μ$-ordinary locus of a Shimura variety with parahoric level structure. Under the axioms in \cite{HR}, we show that $μ$-ordinary locus is a union of some maximal Ekedahl-Kottwitz-Oort-Rapoport strata introduced in \cite{HR} and we give criteria on the density of the $μ$-ordinary locus.

On the acceptable elements

In this paper, we study the set $B(G, \{μ\})$ of acceptable elements for any $p$-adic group $G$. We show that $B(G, \{μ\})$ contains a unique maximal element and the maximal element is represented by an element in the admissible subset of the associated Iwahori-Weyl group.

Cocenters and representations of pro-$p$ Hecke algebras

In this paper, we study the relation between the cocenter and the representations of an affine pro-$p$ Hecke algebra. As a consequence, we obtain a new criterion on the supersingular representation: a (virtual) representation is supersingular if and only if its character vanishes on the non-supersingular part of the cocenter.

Cocenters and representations of affine $0$-Hecke algebras

In this paper, we study the relation between the cocenter $\overline{\tilde \ch_0}$ and the finite dimensional representations of an affine $0$-Hecke algebra $\tilde \ch_0$. As a consequence, we obtain a new criterion on the supersingular modules: a (virtual) module of $\tilde \ch_0$ is supersingular if and only if its character vanishes on the non-supersingular part of $\overline{\tilde \ch_0}$.

Fundamental elements of an affine Weyl group

Fundamental elements are certain special elements of affine Weyl groups introduced by Gortz, Haines, Kottwitz and Reuman. They play an important role in the study of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. In this paper, we obtain characterizations of the fundamental elements and their natural generalizations. We also derive an inverse to a version of "Newton-Hodge decomposition" in affine flag varieties. As an application, we obtain a group-theoretic generalization of Oort's results on minimal p-divisible groups, and we show that, in certain good reduction reduction of PEL Shimura datum, each Newton stratum contains a minimal Ekedahl-Oort stratum. This generalizes a result of Viehmann and Wedhorn.

On isomorphism numbers of "$F$-crystals"

In this note, we show that for an ``$F$-crystal" (the equal characteristic analogue of $F$-crystals), its {\it isomorphism number} and its {\it level torsion} coincide. This confirms a conjure of Vasiu \cite{Va} in the equal characteristic case.

$P$-alcoves, parabolic subalgebras and cocenters of affine Hecke algebras

This is a continuation of the sequence of papers \cite{HN2}, \cite{H99} in the study of the cocenters and class polynomials of affine Hecke algebras $\ch$ and their relation to affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. Let $w$ be a $P$-alcove element, as introduced in \cite{GHKR} and \cite{GHN}. In this paper, we study the image of $T_w$ in the cocenter of $\ch$. In the process, we obtain a Bernstein presentation of the cocenter of $\ch$. We also obtain a comparison theorem among the class polynomials of $\ch$ and of its parabolic subalgebras, which is analogous to the Hodge-Newton decomposition theorem for affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. As a consequence, we present a new proof of \cite{GHKR} and \cite{GHN} on the emptiness pattern of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties.

$P$-alcoves and nonemptiness of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties

We study affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the affine flag manifold of an algebraic group, and in particular the question, which affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties are non-empty. Under mild assumptions on the group, we provide a complete answer to this question in terms of the underlying affine root system. In particular, this proves the corresponding conjecture for split groups stated in Görtz et al. (2010). The question of non-emptiness of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties is closely related to the relationship between certain natural stratifications of moduli spaces of abelian varieties in positive characteristic.

Minimal length elements of extended affine Coxeter groups, II

Let $W$ be an extended affine Weyl group. We prove that minimal length elements $w_{\co}$ of any conjugacy class $\co$ of $W$ satisfy some special properties, generalizing results of Geck and Pfeiffer \cite{GP} on finite Weyl groups. We then introduce the "class polynomials" for affine Hecke algebra $H$ and prove that $T_{w_\co}$, where $\co$ runs over all the conjugacy classes of $W$, forms a basis of the cocenter $H/[H, H]$. We also classify the conjugacy classes satisfying a generalization of Lusztig's conjecture \cite{L4}.

The convolution algebra structure on $K^G(\mathcal{B} \times \mathcal{B})$

We show that the convolution algebra $K^G(\mathcal{B} \times \mathcal{B})$ is isomorphic to the Based ring of the lowest two-sided cell of the extended affine Weyl group associated to $G$, where $G$ is a connected reductive algebraic group over the field $\mathbb{C}$ of complex numbers and $\mathcal{B}$ is the flag variety of $G$.

Minimal length elements of finite Coxeter groups

We give a geometric proof that minimal length elements in a (twisted) conjugacy class of a finite Coxeter group $W$ have remarkable properties with respect to conjugation, taking powers in the associated Braid group and taking centralizer in $W$.
