Jet modification in absence of QGP-medium: the role of multiparton interactions and color reconnection

Recent studies of high-multiplicity events in small collision systems (proton-proton and proton-lead) have drawn research interest towards the possibility of the formation of partonic medium in such systems. One of the important consequences of the formation of dense partonic medium is quenching of high-momentum final-state particles resulting in several experimental observations such as suppression in nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm AA}$, modification of jet shape observable $ρ(r)$ and jet fragmentation ($z^{\rm ch}$) distributions, etc. In this work, we study $ρ(r)$ and $z^{\rm ch}$ for inclusive charged-particle jets in proton-proton (pp) collisions at $\sqrt{s}$~=~13~TeV using PYTHIA~8 Monash~2013 Monte Carlo simulation. We show that the color reconnection (CR) and multiparton interaction (MPI) mechanisms in PYTHIA~8 can lead to an increased rate of jet production. We also find that the mechanisms of MPI and CR and change in the gluonic contribution in high-multiplicity events result in significant modification of $ρ(r)$ and $z^{\rm ch}$ compared to those in minimum bias events for 10~$<p_{\rm T,\,jet}^{\rm ch}<$~20~GeV/$c$. We notice a direct connection of $\langle N_{\rm MPI}\rangle$ and gluonic contribution with the amount of modification in $ρ(r)$ -- the larger the number of MPIs and/or gluonic contribution, the larger the amount of modification of $ρ(r)$.

Chandrasekhar limit for rotating quark stars

The limiting mass is a significant characteristic for compact exotic stars. In the case of quark stars, the limiting mass can be expressed in terms of fundamental constants and the Bag constant. In the present work, using bag model description, the maximum mass of a rotating quark star is found to depend on the rotational frequency apart from other fundamental parameters. The analytical results obtained agree with the results of several relevant numerical estimates as well as observational evidences.

Finite temperature properties of a modified Polyakov$-$Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model

Thermodynamic properties of strongly interacting matter are investigated using the Polyakov loop enhanced Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model along with some modifications to include the hadrons. Various observables are shown to have a close agreement with the numerical data of QCD on lattice. The advantage of the present scheme over a similar study using a switching function is that here no extra parameters are to be fitted. As a result the present scheme can be easily extended for finite chemical potentials.

Convolution based hybrid image processing technique for microscopic images of etch-pits in Nuclear Track Detectors

A novel image processing technique based on convolution is developed for analyzing the etch-pit images in Nuclear Track Detectors (NTDs). The outcomes of the application of the proposed method on the different types of NTDs (e.g., CR-39, PET) containing etch-pit openings of different sizes and shapes (circular and elliptical) is presented. Promising results have been obtained for both identifying and counting the etch-pits in NTDs.

Speeding up of Binary Merger Due to "Apparent" Gravitational Wave Emissions

Gravitational waves from binary black hole pairs have emerged as an important observational tool in current times. The energy of the BH - BH binary pair is radiated in the form of gravitational waves and to compensate for that energy, kinetic energy of the system decreases gradually. Consequently the mutual separation of the objects decreases with time and tends to merge. The whole process may require a very long time comparable or longer than the age of the universe, specially in the case of low mass mergers. We have examined the case in which a massive object compared to the individual masses comprising the binary pair is present nearby such a system. We have found that in this case the merging process takes place much rapidly than that of the conventional BH-BH merging process. Scenarios with both an Intermediate Mass Black Hole (IBMH) ($10^{5}\:M_{\odot}$) as well as a Super Massive Black Hole (SMBH) have been studied and the latter has been found to provide a much higher overall rate for the BH-BH merger process.

Thermodynamics of strongly interacting matter in a hybrid model

The equation of state and fluctuations of conserved charges in a strongly interacting medium under equilibrium conditions form the baseline upon which various possible scenarios in relativistic heavy-ion collision experiments are built. Many of these quantities have been obtained in the lattice QCD framework with reliable continuum extrapolations. Recently the Polyakov$-$Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model has been reparametrized to some extent to reproduce quantitatively the lattice QCD equation of state at vanishing chemical potentials. The agreement was precise except at low temperatures, possibly due to inadequate representation of the hadronic degrees of freedom in the model. This disagreement was also observed for some of the fluctuation and correlations considered. Here we address this issue by introducing the effects of hadrons through the Hadron Resonance Gas model. The total thermodynamic potential is now a weighted sum of the thermodynamic potential of the Polyakov$-$Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model and that of the Hadron Resonance Gas model. We find that the equation of state and the fluctuations and correlations obtained in this hybrid model agrees satisfactorily with the lattice QCD data in the low temperature regime.

Reparametrizing the Polyakov$-$Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model

The Polyakov$-$Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model has been quite successful in describing various qualitative features of observables for strongly interacting matter, that are measurable in heavy-ion collision experiments. The question still remains on the quantitative uncertainties in the model results. Such an estimation is possible only by contrasting these results with those obtained from first principles using the lattice QCD framework. Recently a variety of lattice QCD data were reported in the realistic continuum limit. Here we make a first attempt at reparametrizing the model so as to reproduce these lattice data. We find excellent quantitative agreement for the equation of state. Certain discrepancies in the charge and strangeness susceptibilities as well as baryon-charge correlation still remain. We discuss their causes and outline possible directions to remove them.

Study of radiation background at various high altitude locations in preparation for rare event search in cosmic rays

Various phenomenological models presented over the years have hinted at the possible presence of strangelets, which are nuggets of Strange Quark Matter (SQM), in cosmic rays. One way to search for such rare events is through the deployment of large area Nuclear Track Detector (NTD) arrays at high mountain altitudes. Before the deployment of any such array can begin, a detailed study of the radiation background is essential. Also a proper understanding of the response of detectors exposed to extreme weather conditions is necessary. With that aim, pilot studies were carried out at various high altitude locations in India such as Darjeeling (2200 m a.m.s.l), Ooty (2200 m a.m.s.l) and Hanle (4500 m a.m.s.l). Small arrays of CR-39 as well as high threshold Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) detectors were given open air exposures for periods ranging from three months to two years. The findings of such studies are reported in this paper.

Multifragmentation model for the production of astrophysical strangelets

Determination of baryon number (or mass) distribution of the strangelets, that may fragment out of the warm and excited strange quark matter ejected in the merger of strange stars in compact binary stellar systems in the Galaxy, is attempted here by using a statistical disassembly model. Finite mass of strange quarks is taken into account in the analysis. Resulting charges of the strangelets and the corresponding Coulomb corrections are included to get a plausible size distribution of those strangelets as they are produced in binary stellar mergers thus getting injected in the Galaxy. From this mass distribution of strangelets at their source, an approximate order of magnitude estimate for their possible flux in solar neighborhood is attempted by using a simple diffusion model for their propagation in the Galaxy. Such theoretical estimate is important in view of the ongoing efforts to detect galactic strangelets by recent satellite-borne experiments.

Glueballs amass at RHIC and LHC Colliders! - The early quarkless 1st order phase transition at $T=270$ MeV - from pure Yang-Mills glue plasma to GlueBall-Hagedorn states

The early stage of high multiplicity pp, pA and AA collider is represented by a nearly quarkless, hot, deconfined pure gluon plasma. According to pure Yang-Mills Lattice Gauge Theory, this hot pure glue matter undergoes, at a high temperature, $T_c = 270$ MeV, a first order phase transition into a confined Hagedorn-GlueBall fluid. These new scenario should be characterized by a suppression of high $p_T$ photons and dileptons, baryon suppression and enhanced strange meson production. We propose to observe this newly predicted class of events at LHC and RHIC.

Disassembly model for the production of astrophysical strangelets

Determination of the baryon number (or mass) distribution of the strangelets, that may fragment out of the warm and excited strange quark matter (SQM) ejected in the merger of strange stars (SSs) in compact binary stellar systems of the Galaxy, is attempted by using a statistical disassembly model (SMM). Finite mass of strange quarks is taken into account in the analysis. Strangelet charge and the resulting Coulomb correction are included to get a plausible mass distribution of galactic strangelets at their source.

Shear Viscosity and Phase Diagram from Polyakov$-$Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model

We discuss a detailed study of the variation of shear viscosity, $η$, with temperature and baryon chemical potential within the framework of Polyakov$-$Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model. $η$ is found to depend strongly on the spectral width of the quasi-particles present in the model. The variation of $η$ across the phase diagram has distinctive features for different kinds of transitions. These variations have been used to study the possible location of the Critical End Point (CEP), and cross-checked with similar studies of variation of specific heat. Finally using a parameterization of freeze-out surface in heavy-ion collision experiments, the variation of shear viscosity to entropy ratio has also been discussed as a function of the center of mass energy of collisions.

Quark Number Susceptibility : Revisited with Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem in mean field theories

Fluctuations of conserved quantum numbers are associated with the corresponding susceptibilities because of the symmetry of the system. The underlying fact is that these fluctuations as defined through the static correlators become identical to the direct calculation of these susceptibilities defined through the thermodynamic derivatives, due to the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Through a rigorous exercise we explicitly show that a diagrammatic calculation of the static correlators associated with the conserved quark number fluctuations and the corresponding susceptibilities are possible in case of mean field theories, if the implicit dependence of the mean fields on the quark chemical potential are taken into account appropriately. As an aside we also give an analytical prescription for obtaining the implicit dependence of the mean fields on the quark chemical potential.

Isospin symmetry breaking and baryon-isospin correlations from Polyakov$-$Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model

We present a study of the 1+1 flavor system of strongly interacting matter in terms of the Polyakov$-$Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model. We find that though the small isospin symmetry breaking brought in through unequal light quark masses is too small to affect the thermodynamics of the system in general, it may have significant effect in baryon-isospin correlations and have a measurable impact in heavy-ion collision experiments.

General Relativistic effect on the energy deposition rate for neutrino pair annihilation above the equatorial plane along the symmetry axis near a rotating neutron star

The estimate of the energy deposition rate (EDR) for neutrino pair annihilation has been carried out. The EDR for the neutrinos coming from the equatorial plane of a rotating neutron star is calculated along the rotation axis using the Cook-Shapiro-Teukolsky (CST) metric. The neutrino trajectories and hence the neutrino emitted from the disk is affected by the redshift due to disk rotation and gravitation. The EDR is very sensitive to the value of the temperature and its variation along the disk. The rotation of the star has a negative effect on the EDR; it decreases with increase in rotational velocity.

Entropy scaling from chaotically produced particles in p-p collisions at LHC energies

Scaling of information entropy obtained from chaotically produced particles in p-p collisions, has been shown to be valid up to the highest available collision energy at LHC. Results from Monte Carlo simulation model PYTHIA 6.135 have also been compared. Based on the two com- ponent model and collision energy dependence of the chaoticity, charged particle multiplicities at proposed higher collision energies have been predicted.

Net Charge Fluctuations as a signal of QGP from Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

We report the first model study of the net charge fluctuations in terms of D-measure within the framework of the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. Net charge fluctuation is estimated from the charge susceptibility evaluated using PNJL model. A parameterization of the freeze-out curve has been used to obtain D as a function of sqrt(s). We have discussed our results vis-a-vis recent experimental findings from ALICE collaboration.
