Rigidity of higher Auslander algebras of type $\mathbb{A}$

We show that the Hochschild cohomology of higher Auslander algebras of type $\mathbb{A}$ vanishes in all positive degrees and is one-dimensional in degree zero. As a consequence, these algebras are rigid and intrinsically formal.

Rickard's Derived Morita Theory: Review and Outlook

We survey the main results in Jeremy Rickard's seminal papers `Morita theory for derived categories' and `Derived equivalences and derived functors'. These papers catalysed the later development of the Morita theory of (enhanced) compactly generated triangulated categories by Keller in the algebraic setting and by Schwede and Shipley in the topological setting. We also discuss the role of Rickard's notion of splendid equivalence in the context of Broué's abelian defect group conjecture, and indicate an alternative proof of parts of Rickard's Derived Morita Theorem that leverages the notion of completion of a triangulated category.

Entropy of the Serre functor for partially wrapped Fukaya categories of surfaces with stops

We prove that the entropy of the Serre functor $\mathbb{S}$ in the partially wrapped Fukaya category of a graded surface $Σ$ with stops is given by the function sending $t \in \mathbb{R}$ to $ h_t(\mathbb{S}) = (1-\min Ω)t$, for $t\geq 0$, and to $h_t(\mathbb{S})=(1-\max Ω)t$, for $t\leq 0$, where $Ω= \{\frac{ω_1}{m_1} \ldots, \frac{ω_b}{m_b},0\}$, and $ω_i$ is the winding number of the $i$th boundary component $\partial_iΣ$ of the surface with $b$ boundary components and $m_i$ stops on $\partial_i Σ$. It then follows that the upper and lower Serre dimensions are given by $1-\min Ω$ and $1-\max Ω$, respectively. Furthermore, in the case of a finite dimensional gentle algebra $A$, we show that a Gromov-Yomdin-like equality holds by relating the categorical entropy of the Serre functor of the perfect derived category of $A$ to the logarithm of the spectral radius of the Coxeter transformation.

On geometric models in representation theory

Geometric models have emerged as an important tool in the representation theory of algebras. Surface models associated to gentle algebras have been particularly fruitful in advancing our understanding of their module and derived categories. We give an overview of some of the theoretical advances that geometric surface models for the derived categories of graded gentle algebras and their connections to Fukaya categories of surfaces have made possible.

Hochschild cohomology of graded skew-gentle algebras: Gerstenhaber algebra structure and geometric interpretation

In this paper we calculate the Hochschild cohomology of graded skew-gentle algebras, together with its structure as graded commutative algebra under the cup product and its Lie algebra structure given by the Gerstenhaber bracket. One of the results of this paper is that for graded skew-gentle algebras and thus also for partially wrapped Fukaya categories of orbifold surfaces with stops, their Hochschild cohomology is encoded in the underlying graded surface.

On the $τ$-tilting finiteness and silting-discreteness of graded (skew-) gentle algebras

This paper investigates finiteness conditions for gentle and skew-gentle algebras. First, we prove that a skew-gentle algebra is $τ$-tilting finite if and only if it is representation-finite, which extends the result for gentle algebras by Plamondon (2019). Second, using surface models, we characterize silting-discreteness for the perfect derived categories of graded gentle and skew-gentle algebras. Specifically, for a graded gentle algebra, silting-discreteness is equivalent to its associated surface being of genus zero with non-zero winding numbers for all simple closed curves. We further extend this geometric characterization to graded skew-gentle algebras via orbifold surface models.

Deformations of partially wrapped Fukaya categories of surfaces

We give a complete description of the A$_\infty$ deformation theory of partially wrapped Fukaya categories of graded surfaces. We show that any abstract A$_\infty$ deformation is "geometric", namely it is equivalent to the partially wrapped Fukaya category of an orbifold surface obtained as a partial compactification of the original surface. For certain genus 0 surfaces, these deformations are generically Fukaya categories of compact pillowcases. We introduce the notion of a weak dual and use unbounded twisted complexes to overcome the curvature problem that naturally arises when some of the boundary components are fully wrapped. Our results provide a first account of the relationship between A$_\infty$ deformations of Fukaya categories and partial compactifications, as advocated in P. Seidel's ICM 2002 address, in the presence of stop data. All of our results also hold when the original surface has finitely many order 2 orbifold points.

A geometric model for the derived category of gentle algebras

In this paper we construct a geometric model for the triangulated category generated by the simple modules of any graded gentle algebra. This leads to a geometric model of their perfect derived categories and by a recent paper of Booth, Goodbody and the first author also of their derived categories of objects with finite-dimensional cohomology. The construction is based on the ribbon graph associated to a gentle algebra in the work of the third author, and is linked to partially wrapped Fukaya categories by the work of Haiden, Katzarkov and Kontsevich and to derived categories of coherent sheaves on nodal stacky curves by the work of Lekili and Polishchuk. The ribbon graph gives rise to an oriented surface with boundary and marked points in the boundary. We show that the homotopy classes of curves connecting marked points and of closed curves are in bijection with the isomorphism classes of indecomposable objects in the derived category of the graded gentle algebra. Intersections of curves correspond to morphisms and resolving the crossings of curves gives rise to mapping cones. The Auslander-Reiten translate corresponds to rotating endpoints of curves along the boundary. Furthermore, we show that the surface encodes the derived invariant of Avella-Alaminos and Geiss.

Braid group actions on branched coverings and full exceptional sequences

We relate full exceptional sequences in Fukaya categories of surfaces or equivalently in derived categories of graded gentle algebras to branched coverings over the disk, building on a previous classification result of the first and third author. This allows us to apply tools from the theory of branched coverings such as Birman--Hilden theory and Hurwitz systems to study the natural braid group action on exceptional sequences. As an application, counterexamples are given to a conjecture of Bondal--Polishchuk on the transitivity of the braid group action on full exceptional sequences in a triangulated category.

A complete derived invariant and silting theory for graded gentle algebras

We confirm a conjecture by Lekili and Polishchuk that the geometric invariants which they construct for homologically smooth graded (not necessarily proper) gentle algebras form a complete derived invariant. Hence, we obtain a complete invariant of triangle equivalences for partially wrapped Fukaya categories of graded surfaces with stops. A key ingredient of the proof is the full description of homologically smooth graded gentle algebras whose perfect derived categories admit silting objects. We also apply this to classify which graded gentle algebras admit pre-silting objects that are not partial silting. In particular, this allows us to construct a family of counterexamples to the question whether any pre-silting object in the derived category of a finite-dimensional algebra is partial silting.

The Hochschild cohomology and the Tamarkin-Tsygan calculus of gentle algebras

The Tamarkin Tsygan calculus of a finite dimensional algebra is a differential calculus given by the comprehensive data of the Hochschild cohomology, its structure both as a graded commutative algebra under the cup product and as a graded Lie algebra under the Gerstenhaber bracket, together with the Hochschild homology and its module structure over the Hochschild cohomology given by the cap product as well as the Connes differential. In this paper, we calculate the whole of the Tamarkin Tsygan calculus for the class of gentle algebras. Apart from some isolated calculations, this is, to our knowledge, the first complete calculation of this calculus for a family of finite dimensional algebras. Gentle algebras appear in many different areas of mathematics such as the theory of cluster algebras, N=2 gauge theories and homological mirror symmetry of surfaces. For the latter Haiden-Katzarkov-Kontsevich show that the partially wrapped Fukaya category of a graded surface is triangle equivalent to the perfect derived category of a graded gentle algebra. Thus the symplectic cohomology of the surface should be linked to the Hochschild cohomology of the gentle algebra. We give a description of how this connection might be visualised, in that, we show how these structures are encoded in the geometric surface model of the bounded derived category associated to a gentle algebra via its ribbon graph. Finally, we show how to recover structural results for a gentle algebra given its Tamarkin-Tsygan calculus.

Partially wrapped Fukaya categories of orbifold surfaces

We give a complete description of partially wrapped Fukaya categories of graded orbifold surfaces with stops. We show that a construction via global sections of a natural cosheaf of A$_\infty$ categories on a Lagrangian core of the surface is equivalent to a global construction via the (equivariant) orbit category of a smooth cover. We therefore establish the local-to-global properties of partially wrapped Fukaya categories of orbifold surfaces closely paralleling a proposal by Kontsevich for Fukaya categories of smooth Weinstein manifolds. From the viewpoint of Weinstein sectorial descent in the sense of Ganatra, Pardon and Shende, our results show that orbifold surfaces also have Weinstein sectors of type $\mathrm D$ besides the type $\mathrm A$ or type $\widetilde{\mathrm A}$ sectors on smooth surfaces. We describe the global sections of the cosheaf explicitly for any generator given by an admissible dissection of the orbifold surface and we give a full classification of the formal generators which arise in this way. This shows in particular that the partially wrapped Fukaya category of an orbifold surface can always be described as the perfect derived category of a graded associative algebra. We conjecture that associative algebras obtained from dissections of orbifold surfaces form a new class of associative algebras closed under derived equivalence.

Posets for $F$-polynomials in cluster algebras from surfaces

We prove a simple formula for arbitrary cluster variables in the marked surfaces model. As part of the formula, we associate a labeled poset to each tagged arc, such that the associated $F$-polynomial is a weighted sum of order ideals. Each element of the poset has a weight, and the weight of an ideal is the product of the weights of the elements of the ideal. In the unpunctured case, the weight on each element is a single $\hat{y}_i$, in the usual sense of principal coefficients. In the presence of punctures, some elements may have weights of the form $\hat{y}_i/\hat{y}_j$. Our search for such a formula was inspired by the Fundamental Theorem of Finite Distributive Lattices combined with work of Gregg Musiker, Ralf Schiffler, and Lauren Williams that, in some cases, organized the terms of the $F$-polynomial into a distributive lattice. The proof consists of a simple and poset-theoretically natural argument in a special case, followed by a hyperbolic geometry argument using a cover of the surface to prove the general case.

The Commuting Algebra

Let $KQ$ be a path algebra, where $Q$ is a finite quiver and $K$ is a field. We study $KQ/C$ where $C$ is the two-sided ideal in $KQ$ generated by all differences of parallel paths in $Q$. We show that $KQ/C$ is always finite dimensional and its global dimension is finite. Furthermore, we prove that $KQ/C$ is Morita equivalent to an incidence algebra. The paper starts with the more general setting, where $KQ$ is replaced by $KQ/I$ with $I$ a two-sided ideal in $KQ$.

Dessins d'enfants, Brauer graph algebras and Galois invariants

In this paper, we associate a finite dimensional algebra, called a Brauer graph algebra, to every clean dessin d'enfant by constructing a quiver based on the monodromy of the dessin. We show that Galois conjugate dessins d'enfants give rise to derived equivalent Brauer graph algebras and that the stable Auslander-Reiten quiver and the dimension of the Brauer graph algebra are invariant under the induced action of the absolute Galois group.

Recollements of partially wrapped Fukaya categories and surface cuts

In this paper we use recollements to investigate partially wrapped Fukaya categories of surfaces with marked points. In particular, we show that cutting surfaces gives rise to recollements of the corresponding partially wrapped Fukaya categories. Our approach is based on the fact that the partially wrapped Fukaya category of a surface with marked points is triangle equivalent to the perfect derived category of a homologically smooth and proper graded gentle algebra with zero differential as shown by Haiden, Katzarkov and Kontsevich. Using this, we study particular generators of partially wrapped Fukaya categories, namely full exceptional sequences, silting objects and simple-minded collections. In particular, we fully characterise the existence of full exceptional sequences and we give an example of a partially wrapped Fukaya category which does not admit a silting object, that is a generator with no positive self-extensions.

Categories for Grassmannian cluster algebras of infinite rank

We construct Grassmannian categories of infinite rank, providing an infinite analogue of the Grassmannian cluster categories introduced by Jensen, King, and Su. Each Grassmannian category of infinite rank is given as the category of graded maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over a certain hypersurface singularity. We show that generically free modules of rank $1$ in a Grassmannian category of infinite rank are in bijection with the Plücker coordinates in an appropriate Grassmannian cluster algebra of infinite rank. Moreover, this bijection is structure preserving, as it relates rigidity in the category to compatibility of Plücker coordinates. Along the way, we develop a combinatorial formula to compute the dimension of the $\mathrm{Ext}^1$-spaces between any two generically free modules of rank $1$ in the Grassmannian category of infinite rank.
