Dessins d'enfants and Brauer configuration algebras

In this paper we associate to a dessin d'enfant an associative algebra, called a Brauer configuration algebra. This is an algebra given by quiver and relations induced by the monodromy of the dessin d'enfant. We show that the dimension of the Brauer configuration algebra associated to a dessin d'enfant and the dimension of the centre this algebra are invariant under the action of the absolute Galois group. We give some examples of well-known algebras and their dessins d'enfants. Finally we show that the Brauer configuration algebras of a dessin d'enfant and its dual share the same path algebra.

The first Hochschild (co)homology when adding arrows to a bound quiver algebra

We provide a formula for the change of the dimension of the first Hoch\-schild cohomology vector space of bound quiver algebras when adding new arrows. For this purpose we show that there exists a short exact sequence which relates the first cohomology vector spaces of the algebras to the first relative cohomology. Moreover, we show that the first Hochschild homologies are isomorphic when adding new arrows.

Higher extensions for gentle algebras

In this paper we determine extensions of higher degree between indecomposable modules over gentle algebras. In particular, our results show how such extensions either eventually vanish or become periodic. We give a geometric interpretation of vanishing and periodicity of higher extensions in terms of the surface underlying the gentle algebra. For gentle algebras arising from triangulations of surfaces, we give an explicit basis of higher extension spaces between indecomposable modules.

A complete derived invariant for gentle algebras via winding numbers and Arf invariants

Gentle algebras are in bijection with admissible dissections of marked oriented surfaces. In this paper, we further study the properties of admissible dissections and we show that silting objects for gentle algebras are given by admissible dissections of the associated surface. We associate to each gentle algebra a line field on the corresponding surface and prove that the derived equivalence class of the algebra is completely determined by the homotopy class of the line field up to homeomorphism of the surface. Then, based on winding numbers and the Arf invariant of a certain quadratic form over $\mathbb Z_2$, we translate this to a numerical complete derived invariant for gentle algebras.

Lattice bijections for string modules, snake graphs and the weak Bruhat order

In this paper we introduce abstract string modules and give an explicit bijection between the submodule lattice of an abstract string module and the perfect matching lattice of the corresponding abstract snake graph. In particular, we make explicit the direct correspondence between a submodule of a string module and the perfect matching of the corresponding snake graph. For every string module, we define a Coxeter element in a symmetric group, and we establish a bijection between these lattices and the interval in the weak Bruhat order determined by the Coxeter element. Using the correspondence between string modules and snake graphs, we give a new concise formulation of snake graph calculus.

On the representation dimension and finitistic dimension of special multiserial algebras

For monomial special multiserial algebras, which in general are of wild representation type, we construct radical embeddings into algebras of finite representation type. As a consequence, we show that the representation dimension of monomial and self-injective special multiserial algebras is less or equal to three. This implies that the finitistic dimension conjecture holds for all special multiserial algebras.

Brauer graph algebras

These lecture notes on Brauer graph algebras are the result of a series of four lectures given at the CIMPA research school in Mar del Plata, Argentina, in March 2016. After motivating the study of Brauer graph algebras by relating them to special biserial algebras, the definition of Brauer graph algebras is given in great detail with many examples to illustrate the concepts. This is followed by a short section on the interpretation of Brauer graphs as decorated ribbon graphs. A section on gentle algebras and their graphs, trivial extensions of gentle algebras, admissible cuts of Brauer graph algebras and a first connection of Brauer graph algebras with Jacobian algebras associated to triangulations of marked oriented surfaces follows. The interpretation of flips of diagonals in triangulations of marked oriented surfaces as derived equivalences of Brauer graph algebras and the comparison of derived equivalences of Brauer graph algebras with derived equivalences of frozen Jacobian algebras is the topic of the next section. In the last section, after defining Green's walk around the Brauer graph, a complete description of the Auslander Reiten quiver of a Brauer graph algebra is given.

Extensions in Jacobian Algebras and Cluster Categories of Marked Surfaces

In the context of representation theory of finite dimensional algebras, string algebras have been extensively studied and most aspects of their representation theory are well-understood. One exception to this is the classification of extensions between indecomposable modules. In this paper we explicitly describe such extensions for a class of string algebras, namely gentle algebras associated to surface triangulations. These algebras arise as Jacobian algebras of unpunctured surfaces. We relate the extension spaces of indecomposable modules to crossings of arcs in the surface and give explicit bases of the extension spaces for indecomposable modules in almost all cases. We show that the dimensions of these extension spaces are given in terms of crossing arcs in the surface. Our approach is new and consists of interpreting snake graphs as indecomposable modules. In order to show that our basis is a spanning set, we need to work in the associated cluster category where we explicitly calculate the middle terms of extensions and give bases of their extension spaces. We note that not all extensions in the cluster category give rise to extensions for the Jacobian algebra.

Almost gentle algebras and their trivial extensions

In this paper we define almost gentle algebras. They are monomial special multiserial algebras generalizing gentle algebras. We show that the trivial extension of an almost gentle algebra by its minimal injective co-generator is a symmetric special multiserial algebra and hence a Brauer configuration algebra. Conversely, we show that any almost gentle algebra is an admissible cut of a unique Brauer configuration algebra and as a consequence, we obtain that every Brauer configuration algebra with multiplicity function identically one, is the trivial extension of an almost gentle algebra. We show that to every almost gentle algebra A is associated a hypergraph, and that this hypergraph induces the Brauer configuration of the trivial extension of A. Amongst other things, this gives a combinatorial criterion to decide when two almost gentle algebras have isomorphic trivial extensions.

Brauer configuration algebras: A generalization of Brauer graph algebras

In this paper we introduce a generalization of a Brauer graph algebra which we call a Brauer configuration algebra. As with Brauer graphs and Brauer graph algebras, to each Brauer configuration, there is an associated Brauer configuration algebra. We show that Brauer configuration algebras are finite dimensional symmetric algebras. After studying and analysing structural properties of Brauer configurations and Brauer configuration algebras, we show that a Brauer configuration algebra is multiserial; that is, its Jacobson radical is a sum of uniserial modules whose pairwise intersection is either zero or a simple module. The paper ends with a detailed study of the relationship between radical cubed zero Brauer configuration algebras, symmetric matrices with non-negative integer entries, finite graphs and associated symmetric radical cubed zero algebras.

Special multiserial algebras, Brauer configuration algebras and more : a survey

We survey results on multiserial algebras, special multiserial algebras and Brauer configuration algebras. A structural property of modules over a special multiserial algebra is presented. Almost gentle algebras are introduced and we describe some results related to this class of algebras. We also report on the structure of radical cubed zero symmetric algebras.

Multiserial and special multiserial algebras and their representations

In this paper we study multiserial and special multiserial algebras. These algebras are a natural generalization of biserial and special biserial algebras to algebras of wild representation type. We define a module to be multiserial if its radical is the sum of uniserial modules whose pairwise intersection is either 0 or a simple module. We show that all finitely generated modules over a special multiserial algebra are multiserial. In particular, this implies that, in analogy to special biserial algebras being biserial, special multiserial algebras are multiserial. We then show that the class of symmetric special multiserial algebras coincides with the class of Brauer configuration algebras, where the latter are a generalization of Brauer graph algebras. We end by showing that any symmetric algebra with radical cube zero is special multiserial and so, in particular, it is a Brauer configuration algebra.

Trivial Extensions of Gentle Algebras and Brauer Graph Algebras

We show that two well-studied classes of tame algebras coincide: namely, the class of symmetric special biserial algebras coincides with the class of Brauer graph algebras. We then explore the connection between gentle algebras and symmetric special biserial algebras by explicitly determining the trivial extension of a gentle algebra by its minimal injective co-generator. This is a symmetric special biserial algebra and hence a Brauer graph algebra of which we explicitly give the Brauer graph. We further show that a Brauer graph algebra gives rise, via admissible cuts, to many gentle algebras and that the trivial extension of a gentle algebra obtained via an admissible cut is the original Brauer graph algebra. As a consequence we prove that the trivial extension of a Jacobian algebra of an ideal triangulation of a Riemann surface with marked points in the boundary is isomorphic to the Brauer graph algebra with Brauer graph given by the arcs of the triangulation.

The Ext algebra of a Brauer graph algebra

In this paper we study finite generation of the Ext algebra of a Brauer graph algebra by determining the degrees of the generators. As a consequence we characterize the Brauer graph algebras that are Koszul and those that are K_2.

The geometry of Brauer graph algebras and cluster mutations

In this paper we establish a connection between ribbon graphs and Brauer graphs. As a result, we show that a compact oriented surface with marked points gives rise to a unique Brauer graph algebra up to derived equivalence. In the case of a disc with marked points we show that a dual construction in terms of dual graphs exists. The rotation of a diagonal in an m-angulation gives rise to a Whitehead move in the dual graph, and we explicitly construct a tilting complex on the related Brauer graph algebras reflecting this geometrical move.

A circular order on edge-coloured trees and RNA m-diagrams

We study a circular order on labelled, m-edge-coloured trees with k vertices, and show that the set of such trees with a fixed circular order is in bijection with the set of RNA m-diagrams of degree k, combinatorial objects which can be regarded as RNA secondary structures of a certain kind. We enumerate these sets and show that the set of trees with a fixed circular order can be characterized as an equivalence class for the transitive closure of an operation which, in the case m=3, arises as an induction in the context of interval exchange transformations.

Group actions and coverings of Brauer graph algebras

We develop a theory of group actions and coverings on Brauer graphs that parallels the theory of group actions and coverings of algebras. In particular, we show that any Brauer graph can be covered by a tower of coverings of Brauer graphs such that the topmost covering has multiplicity function identically one, no loops, and no multiple edges. Furthermore, we classify the coverings of Brauer graph algebras that are again Brauer graph algebras.
