Emergent Polar Metal Phase in a Van der Waals Mott Magnet

We report the emergence of a two-dimensional (2D) polar metal phase in van der Waals compound FePSe$_3$ under moderate pressures. This layered material is a Mott insulator with antiferromagnetic order under ambient conditions. We show that FePSe$_3$ uniquely allows tuning a 2D correlated insulator into an exotic metal state where a loss of inversion symmetry leads to periodic polar displacements of ions, within a conducting phase - a polar metal. Our combined synchrotron and neutron diffraction data allow us to present a long-sought, unambiguous high-pressure structural model and show the polar displacements of this new phase. We also observe the suppression of magnetic ordering at the insulator-to-metal transition correspondent with this structural change. Our work outlines a comprehensive temperature-pressure phase diagram of FePSe$_3$, combining detailed structural, magnetic and transport data. The high-pressure phase exhibits activated semiconductor behavior at high temperatures, a $T^2$-dependence in its resistivity at lower temperatures - despite the conditions required for a `good metal' Fermi-Liquid description not being met in this case - and a low-temperature resistivity upturn which is suppressed as the system is tuned away from the concomitant transitions. The realisation of a tunable 2D polar metal state in FePSe$_3$ due to the loss of its inversion symmetry combined with pressure-induced metallicity offers a promising new platform to investigate this exotic phase at accessible pressures.

Pressure-induced transitions in FePS$_3$: Structural, magnetic and electronic properties

FePS$_3$ is a prototype van der Waals layered antiferromagnet and a Mott insulator under ambient conditions, which has been recently reported to go through a pressure-induced dimensionality crossover and an insulator-to-metal transition. These transitions also lead to the appearance of a novel magnetic metallic state. To further understand these emergent structural and physical properties, we have performed a first-principles study using van der Waals and Hubbard $U$ corrected density functional theory including a random structure search. Our computational study attempts to interpret the experimental coexistence of the low- and intermediate-pressure phases and we predict a novel high-pressure phase with distinctive dimensionality and different possible origins of metallicity.

Pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature in C$_6$Yb and C$_6$Ca

We have studied the evolution, with hydrostatic pressure, of the recently discovered superconductivity in the graphite intercalation compounds C$_6$Yb and C$_6$Ca. We present pressure-temperature phase diagrams, for both superconductors, established by electrical transport and magnetization measurements. In the range 0-1.2 GPa the superconducting transition temperature increases linearly with pressure in both materials with $dT_c/dP = +0.39 K/GPa$ and $dT_c/dP = +0.50 K/GPa$ for C$_6$Yb and C$_6$Ca respectively. The transition temperature in C$_6$Yb, which has beenmeasured up to 2.3 GPa, reaches a peak at around 1.8 GPa and then starts to drop. We also discuss how this pressure dependence may be explained within a plasmon pairing mechanism.
